Sunday, December 5, 2010 at 7:30pm An Irish Christmas in America with Teada and special guests Living Traditions Presentations Production The Orpheum Theater 15 W. Aspen Ave. Flagstaff, AZ. 86001 928-600-1365 $13 students, $21 to FFOTM, NACHS, seniors, $23 advance, $25 at the door www.livingtraditionspresentations.com Produced by Oisín Mac Diarmada of award-winning lrish group Téada, the atmospheric Irish Christmas in America show once again features top Irish singer & accordion-player Séamus Begley in the 2010 touring line-up. After an incredible reaction from audiences during the 2009 tour, Séamus Begley from West Kerry, rejoins a host of top musicians and dancers on stage for an engaging performance rich in history, humour and boundless energy. The magic of the Irish harp and uilleann pipes from leading exponents Gráinne Hambly and Tommy Martin augments the rhythmic pulse of Brian Cunningham s stunning old-style Irish dance. This family-friendly performance features evocatively-sung Irish ballads and holiday carols, lively fiddle tunes and thrilling Irish dancing. Narration brings to life ancient customs and stories, while evocative photographic images provide a backdrop of rich historical context. Friday, March 18, 2011 at 7:30pm Slide Ireland Living Traditions Presentations Production The Orpheum Theater 15 W. Aspen Ave. Flagstaff, AZ. 86001 928-600-1365 $13 students, $21 to FFOTM, NACHS, seniors, $23 advance, $25 at the door www.livingtraditionspresentations.com The New Year's Eve standard, Auld Lang Syne, was "written" by the Scots poet Robert Burns, whom NACHS will commemorate on February 2, 2011 with our own Burns Supper. The word "written" is in quotes because the poem/song was not completely original, as Burns pointed out when he sent a copy to the Scots Musical Museum in 1788: "The following song, an old song, of the olden times and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man". Indeed, a song published more than 70 years earlier called Old Lang Syne is similar to Burns' poem and may have been inspired by the same "old song". Regardless of the source of Burns' inspiration, he is clearly the one responsible for it's popularity and it quickly became a Scots' custom to sing it at hogmanay. The song spread to the rest of the British Isles and eventually made its' way to America when it arrived with immigrants, and with the help of Canadian band leader, Guy Lombardo, is now the most popular New Year's Eve tune.
