Mungret Club Notes 29 April 2014 Welcome New Members As the registration process draws to a close, we are delighted to welcome an additional 70 people to our weekly circulation list which now numbers 560 people. We hope you enjoy the club notes, which are issued round about every Tuesday evening. We would like to remind you all that any parent, player or coach who has a match report, a photo or any club-related story of any description they want included with the notes, to please forward them to mungretgaa@gmail.com by Sunday evening for inclusion in the newspapers, and by Tuesday morning for inclusion in this e-newsletter. U12 Camogie A nice picture below of our U12 Camogie team from a recent match. U12 Football Mungret U12 footballers got their County League programme under way on Thursday night at home against Ahane. One of the most exciting games this team played last year was against this opposition, on a day when we recovered a ten point half time deficit to win by a point. And indeed, this year s rematch did not disappoint in terms of drama. 1

In perfect conditions, Ahane showed their intentions from the start and kept Mungret pinned back early on and were first to score with a well taken point. Mungret got into their stride as the half went on. Good play between Cathal Joy and Liam Lynch ended with a Daragh O Hagan goal. A Tom Morrison free kick found Daragh O Hagan who hit the net again. Conor O Halloran won possession out on the left wing and put Cathal Joy in a great position to score Mungrets third goal. Mungret finished the half with two Daragh O Hagan points to lead by 3 goals and 2 points to 3 points. With the breeze at their backs Mungret were set to push on in the second half but Ahane showed great spirit and rocked Mungret with two quick second half goals. At this stage, something had really hit the fan so it was a case of all hands on deck to steady the ship. Some wayward shooting by Mungret increased the pressure.. Ahane rocked us by sweeping up the field, taking a quick free and billowing the net. Advantage Ahane. A point by Liam Lynch us and brought us back to level terms. Oran o Dwyer and Conor o Malley were driving us forward and winning practically everything round the middle. With a late surge, Eamonn Flahive burst downfield, held his nerve and scored what proved to be the winning point, to bring us home by a single point for the second year in a row. Thanks to Ahana for yet another fine, sporting match and well done to the boys for a determined performance and a winning start to the campaign. Panel; Euan o Dea, Ciaran Kenny, Dermot Moloney, Brian o Meara, Conor o Halloran, Oran o Dwyer, Conor Galvin, Conor o Malley (Capt), Liam Lynch, Darragh o Hagan, Tom Morrisson, Eamonn Flahive, Cathal Joy, Conor Murtagh, Keith Mckeogh, Harry Page, David Hassett, David Barry. U10 Hurlers Thanks to all our u10 hurlers who competed in a blitz out in UL on Friday night. One of our competing teams is pictured below. U10/U8 Camogie The second round of cluster blitzes took place in Patrickswell, with our teams competing against Na Piarsaigh, Monaleen and Patrickswell. Our Under 8 players had a fantastic evening, and repeated 2

their trick from the first cluster blitz of winning every match they played. Well done to all involved, and particular thanks to Theresa Fitzgerald and Sinead Hickey for managing the girls on the night. Meanwhile, the biggest problem faced by the under 10 girls was the fact that we brought so many players that we had as many on the bench as on the field at any one time. While this meant that we were effectively changing our entire team at half time in every match, each player played at least a full half in every game and got invaluable experience. We were level at half time against Monaleen and Na Piarsaigh, but lost both matches by the odd goal. By contrast we had an awful start against Patrickswell, but the girls deserve great credit for finishing strongly. Highlights for us were great defending by Eala Gleeson and Derval Mangan, crisp striking from Ciara O Keefe, strong running from Amy Connolly, great work in goals from Holly Roche, great courage from Roisin O Gorman and Caoimhe O Rourke in playing on despite injury. Furthermore, players like Eva Kiely, Derbhla Smith Aoife Long and Ellie Mulqueen worked like Trojans and are improving with every game. Team: Ella Fahy, Ciara O Keefe, Aela Gleeson, Eibhlin O Grady, Amy Connolly, Eva Kiely, Roisin O Gorman, Derbhla Smith, Ellie Mulqueen, Holly Roche, Ella Page, Zoe Page, Caoimhe O Rourke, Amy O Halloran, Lara Sheehan, Sarah Butler, Erin O Connell, Aoife Long, Derval Mangan. Shop New club hats are now available in the shop at only 7.50. Why not pop in and get ready for the sun. The shop is currently open every Saturday 11.30am to 12.30pm. At the moment there is only Veronica Lavin and Wanda Dwane working in the shop but we are currently recruiting for another volunteer. Friday - Rest Saturday- 60 min Cross Sunday - 5 m Run Easter Camp Yet again another great turn out for our Easter Camp. Thanks to all the people, who are far too great in number to list individually, who coached, organised, supervised and brought their children to the camp. The children had a great time and we hope to see you all again early July for our Summer camp. Don't forget the Cúl Camp at the end of August as well. Ladies Football U12s The U12s A team travelled out to St.Pats on Friday night to attempt to continue their 100% record in the championship. Again the Mungret girls proved too strong for the opposition and the game ended Mungret 8-13 St. Pats 2-3. Scores for Mungret Rebecca Landers 2-1, Emer O Keeffe 2-9, Amy O Byrne 3-0, Alannah McDonagh 1-1, Alibhe Larkin 0-1 and Fiona Meehan 0-1. Our backs Fiona O Brien, 4

Helena Dee, Kathlyn Costello and goal keeper Niamh Browne were brilliant in defence throughout the match. 32nd St. Pauls Scout Congratulations to Sarah O'Brien our Feile camogie and ladies football player and her patrol- The Wolves on winning the County Shield at the weekend. This entailed setting up a camp, keeping a log, setting up a meal plan and putting on a sketch all this was done over the weekend in Pallaskenry. The wolf patrol won in all sections and were outright winners. Holy Communion We are approaching May and as we all know it is Communion season. We would like to congratulate all our players who are stepping forward for their Holy Communion. We hope you and your family have a great day. U12 Hurling The Under 12 hurlers visited Burgess Co Tipperary, just outside Nenagh, for a friendly match last Monday evening. This was the scene of our Munster Community games defeat to Roscrea last summer, but we had better luck this time and recorded a good win. This team starts its county league campaign this Thursday with a home match against Kilmallock, throw in 6:45. Ladies Football U14s Last Wednesday the U14s had a home fixture against Monagae in the Championship. Mungret were a much stronger outfit during the game running out comfortable winners 9-15 to 1-0. Scores Jade Gillane 1-0, Ailbhe Larkin 2-2, Roisin Moran 2-1, Emer O Keeffe 1-1, Kerry Guina 1-2, Rachel Fennell 1-1, Aoife Morrissey 1-0, Ciara O Connell 0-2, Leah O Carroll 0-2, Clare O Meara 0-2 and Shannon Barron 0-2. Karin Mason, Emma Burke and Joanne Foley worked very hard in mid-field and in the backs only allowing Monagae to score once in the match. 5

Intermediate Football Sunday had the footballers in Claughaun against Na Piarsaigh. It was a tough match but in good weather. Try as they might they were behind most of the time. Final score Mungret 0-9 to Na Piarsaigh 2-9. Photo shows why you should make sure you stretch as Michael Cussen keeps the ball away from na Piarsaigh. Minor Football We hosted Father Caseys on Friday evening in the first round of the premier minor football championship. A hard fought and high-scoring game resulted in a two point win for our boys on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-14. We did it the hard way coming back from a slow start and a four point deficit to be one down at the break 0-7 to 0-6. A very slow start to the second half saw Caseys hit a goal and lead by eight points before the players recovered to swap points with their opponents and then win a penalty, which was converted by Dylan Frawley. The momentum swung our way from then on, we were on top in the middle and had a surplus of possession but had missed a couple of goal chances before Sean Moran crashed one home over the keepers shoulder from 14 yards to get the crucial score. The next round game is against Newcastlewest, with games scheduled for July v St Patricks & Na Piarsaigh. A special mention is well deserved for the u16 players making their minor debut, each of whom made a telling contribution to the second half comeback; Jake Hackett, John O Donovan, Stephen Scanlon & Adam Storan. Team and scorers; Sean Mullane, Cathal Shinnors, Michael Fitzgibbon, Jake Hackett, Paul Hanley, Luke O Connell, Chris Dunford (0-1), Killian Ryan (0-1), Ronan Beatty, Dylan Frawley (1-3), Ryan Minihan (0-3), Eoin Ryan (0-4), Slen Hughes, Sean Moran (1-0), Donal Brown, John O Donovan, Stephen Scanlon, Adam Storan (0-1) 6

Junior Ladies Football Our newly formed Junior team travelled to Ahane on Sunday evening for a late 7.45 throw in. The first half was a very even contest with goals from Mairead Clancy, Aisling Montano King a goal and a point from Rosie Giltinane and 1 point from Kate McSweeney. Half time score Mungret 3-2 Ahane 2-5. The second half saw Mungret up it a gear and a few positional changes worked to their advantage. Scores from Marita O Brien 1-3, Emma McFeelin 0-2 and Mairead Clancy 0-2. Ahane only scored 3 points in the 2 nd half due to the great defensive work of Aine Ryan, Roisin O Loughlin, Niamh O Keeffe and Aine Cummins. Final score Mungret 4-9 Ahane 2-8. Scór na bpáistí Best of luck to St Nessan's National School Mungret, St Pauls National School and the Gael Scoil in Scór Na bpaisti on Thursday 1st May 2014 at 7:15pm in LIT. Support would be very welcome. Club Registration Please make every effort to get your club registration completed as soon as possible if you have not done so already. For example the individual below, an early morning visitor to the Easter Camp, is suspected of not having paid up, and is not covered by insurance in the event of an injury or accident during a match. Under 15 Football Our under 15 football team put in a great away performance against Monaleen last Wednesday. We started the game with 14 players, and the score was 2:2 to 0:4 in favour of Mungret at half time. Still down 1 player at the start of the second half, JJ Harrington put on a jersey and took to the field at left corner forward, until a replacement arrived. It was a very close game with Monaleen scoring 2:04 in the second half to Mungret's 0:5, leaving us trailing at the final whistle on a scoreline of 2:07 to 2:08. The team:michael Uwatse in goals, Kevin Dowling(u14) and Patrick 7

Hasset(14) at corner back, Colm Moran at full back, Eoin Galvin and Ronan Gallery(u14) at wing back, Conor Lynch at centre back, Liam Harrington and Nevil O'Sullivan at mid-field, Shane Barry(u14) and Mark McGarry at wing forward, with Eoghan Killian centre forward, Fergus Beatty at full forward, Darragh O'Grady(u14) and JJ Harrington then Tom Scanlon(u14) at corner forward. A special thanks is owed to JJ, without whom we would have had to forfeit the game, and to all the U14s who showed up to help us out on the night. All our 15s put in solid performance and we were unlucky not to pull off a win. The game was refereed by Tom Stack.
