The match is set to start at 7 p.m. ABOUT THE BEACH Long Beach State boasts a 9-0 record matching the program s best start to the year since 2008. The Beach finished the month of January with a perfect record, dropping just one set in nine matches. LBSU is just one of three teams with a perfect record thus far. In addition to Long Beach States 9-0 record, Fort Wayne is 7-0, and Charleston (WV) is 3-0 on the year. Junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco became just the 21st player in Long Beach State men s volleyball program history to reach the 1,000 kill mark after recording eight kills against Stanford last week. DeFalco has now accumulated 1012 career kills to rank 20th all time at LBSU. Junior setter Josh Tuaniga has now racked up 2,777 career assists and is ranked seventh all time at Long Beach State. Junior opposite Kyle Ensing has opened the season on fire, leading the Beach in kills in seven of nine matches thus far. Ensing currently leads the team with 94 kills to average 3.36 per set which ranks him fifth in the Big West and 17th in the country. Ensing also boasts a team-best.419 attack percentage which ranks him second in the league and eigth in the nation. As a team, Long Beach State is leading the Big West in hitting percentage (.413) and opponent hitting percentage (.147). IN THE RANKINGS Long Beach State is currently ranked No. 1 in the country after opening the 2018 season with a perfect 9-0 record. Concordia Irvine is not ranked. The Beach were solid offensively as they hit.425 (42-8-80) in the contest as Ensing led the team with 13 kills on.435 hitting (13-3-23). Ensing has now led Long Beach State in kills in seven of nine matches. Joining Ensing in double-figures was senior outside hitter Bjarne Huus who recorded 10 kills in the contest. Huus led the Beach with a.571 attack percentage, committing just two errors on 14 swings. Junior setter Josh Tuaniga narrowly missed a double-double as he tallied 36 assists and nine digs on the night. He also added a pair of kills, and two blocks. Tuaniga has been a key component to Long Beach State s success this season as he has paced the offense and done a solid job controlling the ball. Defensively, libero Jordan Molina held down the back row with a careerhigh 12 digs. He also had help from TJ DeFalco who added eight digs, as well as Ensing who contributed seven. At the net, freshman middle blocker Simon Anderson put up four block assists to lead the team. He also had a solid game offensively, knocking down six kills on 13 attempts with just one error for a.385 clip. The allaround performance by the Beach stymied USC (3-5) which was limited to just.180 hitting (35-17-100). The Trojans were unable to figure out Long Beach State as they committed 17 attack errors, seven service errors, and mustered just two block assists. USC s best performance of the night came in the first set when the Trojans started out with a 5-3 lead. Despite Long Beach State evening the score (6-6) with a Huus ace, USC managed to take back the lead as it went up 15-11. Down by four, Long Beach State used a 4-0 run, highlighted by another Huus ace, to tie the game back up (15-15). From there, the Beach jumped out in front 19-17 on back-to-back kills from Nick Amado and DeFalco, before Huus took it to set point with his third ace of the set. Lastly, Ensing put the game away with a kill to give Long Beach State a 25-22 victory. Once again, USC took an early lead in the second set but Long Beach State was unfazed. The Beach quickly turned the two-point (4-2) deficit into a three-point lead (8-5) forcing a USC timeout. LBSU went on a 7-0 run to jump out to a 10-5 advantage as Ensing knocked down an ace of his own. The Trojans chipped away at the Beach s lead and cut it down to a one-point game (16-15) but could not regain the lead. Following the break in action, the Beach dominated as they closed out the second set on a 9-2 run to win 25-17. Long Beach State continued its solid performance into the third set as the Beach hit.500 (12-2-20) in the frame, while holding the Trojans to just.088 (12-9-34). The Beach took an early lead, taking advantage of back-to-back USC errors and cruised from there. LBSU opened up an eight-point lead (22-14) on a kill by Tuaniga before going on to win the set 25-16. The Beach hit.500 in the first and third sets and tallied a.312 attack percentage in the second, while never allowing the Trojans to hit higher than.290. Huus finished the match with a career-high four service aces to contribute half of the Beach s total aces in the match. The Eagles are averaging 12.8 kills per set on.243 hitting, while posting an impressive 3.0 blocks per set. Raymond Barsemian is the team s leading scorer as he has knocked down 73 kills to average 3.65 per set. Behind Barsemian is Jonathan Predney who averages 3.30 kills per set. Concordia s setter is Chandler Gibb who has dished out 213 helpers this season for an average of 10.65 assists per set. He also leads the Eagles with 2.25 digs per set. In addition to Tuaniga pacing the offense, Long Beach State boasts four starters who are hitting over.400 on the year. Middle blockers Simon Anderson and Nick Amado are hitting.524 and.458, respectively, while junior opposite Kyle Ensing owns a.419 attack percentage, and Tuaniga is hitting.559. GETTIN OFFENSIVE Junior opposite Kyle Ensing has led Long Beach State in kills in seven out of nine matches thus far. He has racked up a team-leading 94 kills for an average of 3.36 per set, while hitting.419 on the year. Ensing s kills average is good for fifth in the conference and 17th in the nation, while his attack percentage puts him second in the league and eighth in the country. Long Beach State has three players in the Top 10 in the Big West in hitting percentage. BLOCK PARTY Long Beach State has been dominant at the net this season as the Beach average 2.55 blocks per set to rank in the Top 10 in the country. Leading the way is freshman middle blocker Simon Anderson who has posted a team-high 31 blocks for an average of 1.11 blocks per set. Anderson s average is good for third in the league and 15th in the country. Redshirt junior middle blocker Nick Amado is second on the squad as he averages 0.92 blocks per set. Behind Amado are teammates Kyle Ensing (0.86) and Bjarne Huus (0.79). HOME SWEET HOME Over the last three seasons, Long Beach State has put together a 30-3 record inside the Pyramid. That record is good for a winning percentage of.909. The Beach have not lost a home match since March 26, 2016 when they dropped a 3-0 decision to then-no. 2 UCLA. Since then, LBSU owns a 20-0 record when playing at home. RECORD SETTERS Just a few weeks into the 2018 season and the top-ranked Long Beach State men s volleyball program has shattered its own season ticket record. The Long Beach State ticket office has sold 150 men s volleyball season tickets, which is more than a 60 percent increase in season ticket sales from a year ago. A NEW ERA Long Beach State opens 2018 as part of the Big West Conference during its inaugural men s volleyball season. The Big West is the first NCAA Division I conference to sponsor men s volleyball making it the league s 18th sponsored sport. The Beach s conference opener will take place on March 2 when they travel to CSUN. Long Beach State s first Big West home match is set for Sunday, March 4 at 7 p.m.

Josh Tuaniga took home Player of the Week honors, while Nick Amado earned Defensive Player of the week accolades, and Simon Anderson claimed Freshman of the Week for the second time in as many weeks. VOLLEYMOB POW In addition to winning Big West Player of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 15, Tuaniga was also named VolleyMob Player of the Week as he tallied 32 assists at Lewis followed by 29 at Loyola to total 61 helpers for an average of 10.17 per set. With Tuaniga pacing the offense, the Beach are 6-0 on the year and off to their best start since 2008 when they opened the season 9-0. ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS During the first week of the season, Long Beach State took part in the UC Santa Barbara ASICS Tournament where the Beach went 3-0 with victories over Princeton (3-0), NJIT (3-1), and Saint Francis (Pa.) (3-0). At the tournament, LBSU received a pair of solid efforts by TJ DeFalco and Josh Tuaniga which led to the duo being named to the All- Tournament Team. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS Off the Block named the Long Beach State junior trio of TJ DeFalco, Kyle Ensing, and Josh Tuaniga to its Preseason All-American list prior to the start of the season. DeFalco and Ensing kicked off 2018 by leading Long Beach State in kills in the opening week averaging 3.31 and 2.54 kills per set, respectively. Tuaniga paced the offensive, which hit.418, with 125 assists for an average of 10.42 per set. COACH OF THE YEAR, TIMES TWO Head Coach Alan Knipe was named 2017 MPSF Coach of the Year and AVCA Coach of the Year. Knipe earned the honors for the second time in his career after leading the Beach to a 27-4 overall record, marking the most wins for the program since 2004. Under Knipe s tutelage, LBSU won a share of the MPSF Regular Season title and appeared in the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed overall after having been ranked No. 1 in five of the last six weeks. BIG WEST TOURNAMENT The inaugural Big West Men s Volleyball Tournament will be held April 19-21 at Long Beach State s Walter Pyramid. He also helped the Beach advance to the 1990 NCAA Finals. Knipe continued his playing career following his graduation from Long Beach State as he was a member of the United States National Team from 1992-93. He also played on the Bud Light 4-Man Pro Beach Volleyball Tour and won seven USVB National Open Championships with Team Paul Mitchell. In 1993, he was named the United States Volleyball Association Player of the Year. Two years later, Knipe played overseas for Spoleto in the Italian Pro League and played for the Zellik Club in Belgium the following year. In October 2006, Knipe was inducted into the inaugural Long Beach State Men s Volleyball Wall of Honor which recognizes former players who represented 49er men s volleyball with unparalleled success or achievement. He was also inducted into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011. Knipe graduated from Marina High School in Huntington Beach, Calif., and spent one year at Orange Coast College before transferring to Long Beach State, where he received his bachelor s degree in speech communications in 1992.
