Aims The aims f ur first aid plicy are t: Ensure the health and safety f all staff, pupils and visitrs Ensure that staff and gvernrs are aware f their respnsibilities with regards t health and safety Prvide a framewrk fr respnding t an incident and recrding and reprting the utcmes 2. Legislatin and guidance This plicy is based n advice frm the Department fr Educatin n first aid in schls and health and safety in schls, and the fllwing legislatin: The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulatins 1981, which state that emplyers must prvide adequate and apprpriate equipment and facilities t enable first aid t be administered t emplyees, and qualified first aid persnnel The Management f Health and Safety at Wrk Regulatins 1992, which require emplyers t make an assessment f the risks t the health and safety f their emplyees The Management f Health and Safety at Wrk Regulatins 1999, which require emplyers t carry ut risk assessments, make arrangements t implement necessary measures, and arrange fr apprpriate infrmatin and training The Reprting f Injuries, Diseases and Dangerus Occurrences Regulatins (RIDDOR) 2013, which state that sme accidents must be reprted t the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), and set ut the timeframe fr this and hw lng recrds f such accidents must be kept Scial Security (Claims and Payments) Regulatins 1979, which set ut rules n the retentin f accident recrds The Educatin (Independent Schl Standards) Regulatins 2014, which require that suitable space is prvided t cater fr the medical and therapy needs f pupils 2
3. Rles and respnsibilities 3.1 Appinted persn(s) and first aiders The schl s appinted persns are Mr. Nigel Dayes and Mrs. Patricia Oliver. They are respnsible fr: Taking charge when smene is injured r becmes ill Ensuring there is an adequate supply f medical materials in first aid kits, and replenishing the cntents f these kits Ensuring that an ambulance r ther prfessinal medical help is summned when apprpriate First aiders are trained and qualified t carry ut the rle (see sectin 7) and are respnsible fr: Acting as first respnders t any incidents; they will assess the situatin where there is an injured r ill persn, and prvide immediate and apprpriate treatment Sending pupils hme t recver, where necessary Filling in an accident reprt n the same day, r as sn as is reasnably practicable, after an incident (see the template in appendix 2) Keeping their cntact details up t date Our schl s appinted persns are listed in appendix 1. Their names will als be displayed prminently arund the schl. : 3.2 Trustees and gverning bard CACFO UK s Trustees have ultimate respnsibility fr health and safety matters in the schl, but delegate respnsibility fr the strategic management f such matters t the schl s gverning bard. The gverning bard delegates peratinal matters and day-t-day tasks t the headteacher and staff members. 3.3 The headteacher The headteacher is respnsible fr the implementatin f this plicy, including: Ensuring that an apprpriate number f trained first aid persnnel are present in the schl at all times Ensuring that first aiders have an apprpriate qualificatin, keep training up t date and remain cmpetent t perfrm their rle Ensuring all staff are aware f first aid prcedures Ensuring apprpriate risk assessments are cmpleted and apprpriate measures are put in place Undertaking, r ensuring that managers undertake, risk assessments, as apprpriate, and that apprpriate measures are put in place Ensuring that adequate space is available fr catering t the medical needs f pupils Reprting specified incidents t the HSE when necessary (see sectin 6) 3.4 Staff Schl staff are respnsible fr: Ensuring they fllw first aid prcedures Ensuring they knw wh the first aiders in schl are Cmpleting accident reprts (see appendix 2) fr all incidents they attend t where an appinted persn is nt called Infrming the headteacher r their manager f any specific health cnditins r first aid needs 3

First aid prcedures 4.1 In-schl prcedures In the event f an accident resulting in injury: The clsest member f staff present will assess the seriusness f the injury and seek the assistance f a qualified first aider, if apprpriate, wh will prvide the required first aid treatment The first aider, if called, will assess the injury and decide if further assistance is needed frm a clleague r the emergency services. They will remain n scene until help arrives The first aider will als decide whether the injured persn shuld be mved r placed in a recvery psitin If the first aider judges that a pupil is t unwell t remain in schl, parents will be cntacted and asked t cllect their child. Upn their arrival, the first aider will recmmend next steps t the parents If emergency services are called, the appinted persn will cntact parents immediately The first aider will cmplete an accident reprt frm n the same day r as sn as is reasnably practical after an incident resulting in an injury 4.2 Off-site prcedures When taking pupils ff the schl premises, staff will ensure they always have the fllwing: A schl mbile phne A prtable first aid kit Infrmatin abut the specific medical needs f pupils Parents cntact details Risk assessments will be cmpleted by the Designated Safeguarding Lead prir t any educatinal visit that necessitates taking pupils ff schl premises. There will always be at least ne first aider n schl trips and visits. 5. First aid equipment A typical first aid kit in ur schl will include the fllwing: A leaflet with general first aid advice Regular and large bandages Eye pad bandages Triangular bandages Adhesive tape Safety pins Dispsable glves Antiseptic wipes Plasters f assrted sizes Scissrs Cld cmpresses Burns dressings 4
Medicatin fr Pupils N medicatin is kept in first aid kits. Pupils medicatin is kept in the lcked medical cabinet in the schl ffice and handled nly by the first aiders. There is a medical lg which is used t list infrmatin abut pupils medicatin. Parents are asked t send a letter utlining the circumstances surrunding the intake f medicatin fr their child fr bth prescriptive and ver the cunter medicatin. Recrd-keeping and reprting 6.1 First aid and accident recrd bk An accident frm will be cmpleted by the first aider n the same day r as sn as pssible after an incident resulting in an injury As much detail as pssible shuld be supplied when reprting an accident, including all f the infrmatin included in the accident frm at appendix 2 Recrds held in the first aid and accident bk will be retained by the schl fr a minimum f 3 years, in accrdance with regulatin 25 f the Scial Security (Claims and Payments) Regulatins 1979, and then securely dispsed f 6.2 Reprting t the HSE The first aider will keep a recrd f any accident which results in a reprtable injury, disease, r dangerus ccurrence as defined in the RIDDOR 2013 legislatin (regulatins 4, 5, 6 and 7). The first aider will reprt these t the head teacher as sn as is reasnably practicable and in any event within 10 days f the incident. Reprtable injuries, diseases r dangerus ccurrences include: Death Specified injuries, which are: Fractures, ther than t fingers, thumbs and tes Amputatins Any injury likely t lead t permanent lss f sight r reductin in sight Any crush injury t the head r trs causing damage t the brain r internal rgans Serius burns (including scalding) Any scalping requiring hspital treatment Any lss f cnsciusness caused by head injury r asphyxia Any ther injury arising frm wrking in an enclsed space which leads t hypthermia r heatinduced illness, r requires resuscitatin r admittance t hspital fr mre than 24 hurs Injuries where an emplyee is away frm wrk r unable t perfrm their nrmal wrk duties fr mre than 7 cnsecutive days (nt including the day f the incident) Where an accident leads t smene being taken t hspital Near-miss events that d nt result in an injury, but culd have dne. Infrmatin n hw t make a RIDDOR reprt is available here: Hw t make a RIDDOR reprt, HSE http://www.hse.gv.uk/riddr/reprt.htm 6.3 Ntifying parents The first aider and/r the designated safeguarding lead will infrm parents f any accident r injury sustained by a pupil, and any first aid treatment given, n the same day, r as sn as reasnably practicable. 6.4 Reprting t Ofsted and child prtectin agencies The head teacher will ntify Ofsted f any serius accident, illness r injury t, r death f, a pupil while in the schl s care. This will happen as sn as is reasnably practicable, and n later than 14 days after the incident. The head teacher will als ntify Crydn Safeguarding Children Bard f any serius accident r injury t, r the death f, a pupil while in the schl s care: Crydn Safeguarding Children Bard Children, families and learning Telephne: 020 8726 6400 ext. 63358 7. Training All first aiders must have cmpleted a training curse, and must hld a valid certificate f cmpetence t shw this. The schl will keep a register f all trained first aiders, what training they have received and when this is valid until (see appendix 3). Staff are encuraged t renew their first aid training when it is n lnger valid. 8. Mnitring arrangements This plicy will be reviewed by the Gverning Bdy nce a year. Spt checks will be undertaken by the Lead Safeguarding Gvernr annually t ensure cmpliance. At every review, the plicy will be apprved by the gverning bdy. 9.
