COUNTY FAIR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Many volunteers are needed to make the county fair run smoothly. If you would like to volunteer to help in a particular area of interest, contact the Extension Office. Some of the jobs available include assisting in the Extension Office, comment writers for judges, arranging displays, registering 4-H ers for interview judging, youth volunteers to hand out ribbons at the various livestock shows, etc. CD/DVD COUNTY FAIR ENTRIES Many exhibits for the county fair are to be submitted in a CD/DVD format. If you are entering a class where a CD/DVD is required, remember that you must provide the equipment to present the entry to the judge. The Extension Office will not be providing computer equipment for these exhibits. (Does not include Shopping In Style) DO YOU HAVE EXTRA CURRENT EAR TAGS? If you have extra current 4-H livestock ear tags that you did not use, please return them to the Extension Office before county fair. You will be refunded. BEEF SHOW EQUIPMENT FOR CHECK-OUT The family of Tommy Fred has donated some beef show equipment to the Extension Office. 4-H ers may check-out the equipment to use. For a complete list of equipment available, contact the Extension Office. 2018

2020 CWF DELEGATES JULY 15 - CWF PAYMENT DUE...That means that all payments will be due in the Extension Office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13 in order to avoid a $50 late fee being charged. Payments received in person or by mail on Monday, July 16 are subject to the $50 late fee. TUESDAY, JULY 17 CWF CONCESSION STAND WORK NIGHT AND INFORMATIONAL MEETING... A CWF Concession Stand Work Night and Informational Meeting will be held Tuesday, July 17. The purpose of the meeting is to clean the concession stands in preparation of county fair, to discuss county fair concession stand procedures, and get acquainted. All delegates and at least one parent are encouraged to attend. Everyone should plan to meet at the 4-H Building at 6:00 p.m. to receive their cleaning assignments. A sloppy joe supper will be served at approximately 8:00, with an informational meeting to follow. COMMUNITY FESTIVALS There are many community festivals in the county during the summer months. We are interested in knowing about 4-H club entries in these various parades. Let Colleen know if you had an entry that promoted your 4-H club in one of these parades. CLOTHING Modeling Workshop - July 12, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow. See enclosed flyer. All 4-H ers enrolled in a sewing/clothing/consumer management project will receive an email outlining the details of clothing day, how to write a narrative, deadlines, etc. Be sure to watch for it. FASHION SHOW NARRATIVES - All 4-H ers entering the fashion show must have all typed or clearly printed fashion show narratives in to the Extension Office by Monday, July 16. Narratives should take approximately 30 seconds to read out loud. **NEW** 4-H ers may submit their narratives online this year. The link to submit narratives is: https://goo.gl/forms/xmh2nairqxtodbxr1 Narratives may be submitted online at the link OR submitted in paper form to the Extension Office. The deadline for narratives is Monday, July 16. Please do not email narratives to Extension Staff. 4-H ers who do not turn in a narrative cannot model in front of the fashion show judge and cannot participate in the public fashion show. All 4-H ers who model in front of the fashion show judge MUST model at the public fashion show. This includes all sewing, knitting, crocheting, and consumer management projects. Clothing judging and the public fashion show will be held on Thursday, July 19. WHAT DOES THE COLOR OF MY RIBBON MEAN? As 4-H events, contests, and county fair begin to take place, we thought it would be appropriate for the 4-H ers, parents, and leaders to understand what the color of their ribbon(s) means. Purple Outstanding/Superior and exceeds all standards. Blue...Excellent/Above average, with almost all of the standards met in a way that surpasses the norm. Red Average, with the majority of standards met, but not exceeded. White.Below average, with few standards met. Needs improvement. Participation.Recognition of 4-H exhibit s presence at the fair. 4-H FOODS EXHIBITORS If you will have food projects judged Saturday, July 28, AND you have other responsibilities such as gardening projects to be judged or shooting sports, PLEASE do not request preferential treatment to see the foods judge(s). Everyone must sign in and wait to see the judge(s). If you have other responsibilities, and you cannot wait in line, sign your foods projects in, take care of those other responsibilities, and if your name comes to the top of the list while you are gone, your name will be set aside, but not moved to the bottom of the list. Remember that if you choose not to interview judge, you will be dropped a ribbon placing.

SIGNS FOR CHAMPION BEEF EXHIBITS Kim and Denise Woodward have donated signs for the Champion Beef exhibits, both 4-H and FFA, at the Custer County Fair. These signs may be checked out at the Livestock Office and will need to be checked back in at the close of the county fair. Please be sure to thank the Woodward Family. Required...4-H Livestock Show Ethics Affidavit Because of some recent requirements put in place by meat packers, 4-H exhibitors who sell 4-H market beef, market swine, meat goats and/or market sheep at the county fair are required to sign a Drug Ethics Affidavit. This affidavit contains the following statement To the best of our knowledge, while under our ownership, possession or direct control, none of the livestock are adulterated within the meaning of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, i.e. none of the cattle or other ruminants have been fed any feed containing ruminant derived meat and bone meal. These forms also state that non-approved drugs were not used and the animal is not under any withdrawal time relative to the administration of any legal drugs or vaccine. These forms are included with this Bow Knot newsletter and will also be available at the fairgrounds in the Livestock Office. ALL AFFIDAVITS FOR MARKET BEEF, MARKET SHEEP, MEAT GOATS, AND MARKET SWINE MUST BE TURNED IN AT WEIGH-IN ON SUNDAY, JULY 29. EACH 4-H MEMBER IS ASKED TO COMPLETE ONE AFFIDAVIT FOR EACH MARKET SPECIES ENTERED. AFFIDAVITS ARE NOT TO BE TURNED IN BEFORE THAT TIME! SHEEP & SWINE Sunday, July 29, sheep will be weighed at the county fair 3:00-4:00 p.m., and hogs will be weighed 4:00-6:00 p.m. Immediately following weigh-in, the pens, catch pens, and alleys must be constructed. When the sheep show is over, the pens are taken down to make room for the Beef Show on Tuesday. These are big jobs. 4-H and FFA swine families are asked to help construct the pens and alley immediately following weigh-in on Sunday. 4-H and FFA sheep families are asked to take the pens in the show ring down immediately following the Sheep Show. People who have done this in the past will be there to guide the process, but they can use your help. Many hands make light work. It is the responsibility of the 4-H er to get hogs to the show ring Monday morning and to the sale ring Thursday evening. Swine health papers will not be required. However, any animal may be removed from the fair if it is suspected of being ill or having a transmissible disease. No hogs can be unloaded until 8:00 a.m., Sunday, July 29. Weigh-in will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. 4-H members are responsible for cleaning their livestock stalls before leaving the fairgrounds on Thursday, August 2...beef, sheep, swine, goats, dairy, horse, and rabbits. RELEASE OF COUNTY FAIR EXHIBITS ALL exhibits will be released on Thursday, August 2, 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. EARLY RELEASE MUST BE FOR EMERGENCY REASONS ONLY. There will be NO early release of horses. If you have exhibits that are chosen to go to the State Fair, please pick them up from the county fair. Extension Staff are not responsible for taking State Fair exhibits to the Extension Office from the county fair. Exhibits tagged for State Fair must be turned in to the Extension Office by 12:00 noon on August 21. HERDSMANSHIP SCORE SHEET Are you interested in knowing what the county fair herdsmanship scores are based on? Criteria for the herdsmanship scoring can be found on page 83 of the Custer County Fair Premium Book. Top clubs will have their club name engraved on plaques which are displayed in the 4-H Building. MANURE CARTS AT THE COUNTY FAIR We have been asked by the Ag Society to stress the importance of NOT putting garbage in the manure carts around the livestock barns at the county fair. The manure carts are for animal waste and bedding, only. Trash barrels are to be used for garbage and NOT animal waste/bedding. 4-H HORSE LEVEL TESTING Just a reminder that 4-H horse members who plan to exhibit at the county fair, MUST pass Level 1 prior to July 13. If the assigned time does not work for your club, please trade with another club. The Extension Office will not find a substitute.
