About the Jacksonville Children s Chorus The mission of the Jacksonville Children s Chorus (JCC) is to provide a high-quality, choral music education for children of diverse backgrounds, fostering teamwork, self-discipline, accomplishment and pride while filling an important cultural need in the community and sharing the beauty of the choral art form through artistically excellent performances. In 1995, several colleagues at Jacksonville University met to discuss the possibilities of making a shared dream come true. Local conductor Jim Taylor, with guidance from University President Dr. Fran Kinne and vocal conductor Dr. Jon Carlson, drew up the framework for a Jacksonville University Children s Chorus. The program s first choir served sixteen children, but through word of mouth, the program grew, and in 1998 Taylor and a brand-new Board of Directors worked to incorporate the organization into The Jacksonville Children s Chorus. The Chorus growth, from 16 voices in 1995 to over 1,000 in year-long choirs and outreach programs today, illustrates its continued impact on our entire community here in Northeast Florida. Over 35% of JCC students receive scholarships to cover tuition costs, and each year the need for scholarships exceeds the funds available. Despite these challenges, it is the JCC s policy to turn no child away who wishes to sing. Scholarships provide tuition, uniforms, and cover the cost of performances and trips the chance of a lifetime for our region s young children, many of whom have never left the state of Florida. Full and partial scholarships are provided to those singers who wouldn t otherwise be able to participate in The Chorus. In our 2016-17 season, 130 singers received such assistance, compared to 77 singers in our 2013-14 season. With the funding through events like Jacksonville s Dancing with Stars, we hope to continue our scholarship assistance each season.
