PARENT INFORMATION MEETING 2015
Spiritleader Basics Ê All practices take place after school at CHHS or at the Talent Factory in Chino. Ê If Spiritleaders choose to work - PLEASE schedule work after 5:30 pm. Ê Spiritleaders are required to cheer at ALL football games, ALL basketball games, home wrestling matches and other games as called upon. Ê Spiritleading is a year round activity. Spiritleaders may think twice when being a member of another sport or program at CHHS as it will conflict with most spirit events.
What about All Stars? Ê Spiritleaders are allowed to participate on All- Star Teams, however, please be aware of our practice schedules. It is very difficult to accommodate various All Star Team chooses to schedules. Please be mindful that we want to be FIRST in priority.
How many spiritleaders will you take? Ê It depends on the judges scores and the amount of candidates. However, we are always looking for: Ê 8-18Varsity Cheer Ê 12-18 JV Cheer Ê 7-10 Varsity Song Ê 7-12 JV Song Ê 2-4 Varsity Mascots
Transfers Ê Students who do not currently attend CHHS or do not live in the enrollment area may not try out on the basis of a transfer request. They must already be approved.
Requirements and Qualifications Ê Please go to www.chhshuskyspirit.com Ê This is very important! Our constitution is updated every year. Ê Both the spirit candidate and parent must understand the time committment and booster donation need. Our parent boosters are very involved.
Actual Try- Outs and Clinic March 30- April 2 Ê Monday, March 30-3- 5:30 Small Gym Ê Tuesday, March 31-3- 5:30 pm Small Gym Ê Wednesday, April 1-3- 5:30 pm Small Gym Ê Thursday, April 2 Try- outs (starts at 3 pm Small Gym)
Songleading Ê Candidates will perform the game action cheer and one dance routine. Songleaders do not stunt. At clinics each candidate will learn motion placement, jumps, and dance technique. At try- outs the candidate will perform a combination of jumps, leaps and turning sequences, one dance, and a sideline chant while demonstrating dance skill in kick lines and a minimum of double turns (two rotations ).
Song (cont d) Ê There is no skill requirement for trying out, however, song candidates are encouraged to have at minimum Ê a level toe touch, Ê double pirouettes, double pencil (leg hold) turns, Straight, tilt, fan kicks and inside fans and a la seconde turns (at least one eight count). Ê Candidates can successfully make the squad and work on those skills during the year, however, they should know that those skill scores are based on the level of performance and difficulty during the try- out.
Cheerleading Ê At cheer clinics each candidate will learn motion placement, jumps, dance technique and tumbling execution. Ê Candidates will need to show some form of gymnastic skill. Ê Tumbling skills can include: round offs, front rolls, cartwheels, round off back hand springs, standing back hand springs or any form of advanced tumbling that the candidate is comfortable performing. Ê At try- outs the candidate will perform a combination of 3 jumps, show their gymnastics, one dance/performance cheer and a sideline chant.

Ê Candidates can successfully make the squad and work on those skills during the year, however, they should know that tumbling scores are based on the level of difficulty during the try- out. Ê Candidates will try- out on a mat. Candidates may not ask for a spot during try- outs.
Mascots Ê Candidates will learn the game action cheer husky style and will learn a short routine that will include characterization and improvisation. Ê Candidates will be required to bring some props from home. Candidates may be released slightly earlier than cheer and song candidates.
Grade Requirement Ê Students must have a 2.0 GPA. Part of the GPA is a part of the overall score. Ê 10 points possible Ê 4.0-3.50 = 10 points Ê 3.25-3.49 = 8 points Ê 3.0-3.24 = 6 points Ê 2.75-2.99 = 4 points Ê 2.50-2.74 = 2 points Ê 2.25-2.49 = 1 points Ê 2.0-2.24 = 0 points
Application Ê Parent/Guardian and Spiritleader candidate must read, agree to and complete the cover signature sheet handed out at the MANDATORY MEETING ON March 3, 2015: Ê Spiritleader candidates will fill out the ONLINE APPLICATION and submit by: March 19, 2015 at 2:30. Ê Attach the cover- signature sheet, try- out t- shirt order form and money, a high school sports physical, and the two- teacher evaluation forms (each Spiritleader candidate needs to attach an envelope to the evaluation forms with their name on the outside) together and turn into the front office of CHHS by March 19, 2015.

Donation Requests Ê Spiritleading is not funded by CHHS ASB, athletics or district programs. It is not a Title IX program. All programs at CHHS ask for donations for items needed for students. Ê Spiritleaders and their families who opt to have a school issued uniform and supplies must not personalize or alter the uniform/supplies in anyway. Spiritleaders will be requested to check out items. Ê Spiritleaders and their families who opt to order their own uniform may alter the sizing of their uniforms but not the overall look of the uniform.

Talent Factory Ê We are lucky enough to have a good relationship with Talent Factory for dance technique and tumbling class. While not mandatory, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that spiritleaders be enrolled in classes that are set aside just for our school. We will be looking at raising funds for a class this season.
There are several ways to raise funds. At CHHS we have bingo fundraisers where you can work beyond your required hours, we accept sponsorships and we have individual account fundraiser events.
Camp Options Ê Camp is optional. However spiritleaders who do not attend are still required to learn material from captains and other squad members by the Wednesday before the first football game. It is a great bonding experience for all the spiritleaders that they don t want to miss out on! Ê Camp for all spiritleaders will be July 7-10 at Cal Poly Pomona/Fairplex. OR USSL at Vanguard University July 30- August 2 (next to Orange County Fair). Ê Camp deposits will be taken at first booster meeting.

Step 2 Ê Turn in your cover sheet packet which includes, essay, physical, spirit pack sheet and your teacher evaluations to the Spirit box in the CHHS front office by March 19, 2015. Ê You may put it all in one envelope, or just clip it all together. Please do not staple.
NEW INFO ABOUT PHYSICALS Ê WE HAVE A NEW PROCESS FOR PHYSICALS HERE AT CHHS. All returning and new spiritleaders need a physical. Ê Please see: Ê https://chinohills.8to18.com/accounts/login
Every candidate must have a physical on file. Ê They are due NO LATER THAN THE FIRST DAY OF CLINIC Ê You cannot participate in clinics without the physical. Ê The medical form MUST be filled out by a doctor. Chiropractors and Nurse Practitioners are not allowed to sign off.
Clinic and Try- Outs Ê There is a clinic and try- out dress code. Ê All Spiritleader Candidates are required to wear the Try- Out t- shirt OR Husky P.E. Shirts and Shorts (eighth graders may wear their middle school P.E. shirts and shorts) Please email us at chhshuskyspirit.com if you need a p.e. shirt from our p.e. department. Ê Hair needs to be pulled away from your face and keep it neat. (ponytails are recommended) Ê Absolutely no glitter or jewelry is allowed. It is a safety hazard for some and could possibly detract from your performance. Ê Athletic tennis shoes for cheer and mascots. Jazz shoes for song.
Ê Please tuck in your shirt. You are jumping, rolling and moving around a lot, and we do not want to "flash" anyone, especially the judges at tryouts. Please bring a water bottle. Cell phones should be put on silent or turned off and should not be a distraction to the clinic candidate or others. We politely ask that cell phones are not to be brought out during the duration of clinics, including break times. Ê Try- outs and clinic are closed to spectators. Please no recording of instructional material.
Try- Out Spirit Pack Ê Candidates may buy a t- shirt and ribbon for try- outs. Ê Order forms are in your packet. Ê You are welcome to turn them in tonight. Ê We have found that candidates would rather wear something other than p.e. clothes. Again if you would like to borrow one from our CHHS p.e. department, please email us at chhshuskyspirit@gmail.com
Teacher Evaluations Ê Each candidate must turn in TWO evaluations. Ê Must be in a sealed envelope with teacher signature on the back. Ê Send a thank you to the teacher Ê If you are currently in the program, the CHHS staff MUST fill out one of your evaluations.
Judging Ê 3-4 Judges will be hired from professional organizations such as CheerPros, US Spiritleaders and the United Spirit Association. Ê Each candidate will be scored on a 1-100 point scale. Ê The 3-4 judge sheets will be totaled together for 300/400 points possible.
Total Points for Try- Out Score Ê Clinics - 15 points possible Ê Teacher Evaluations - 15 points each Ê Report Card - 10 points possible Ê Candidate Essay - 50 points possible Ê Judges at tryouts - 100 points possible per Judge
Ê The entire try- out and evaluations are as follows: Ê The number of candidates placed on each squad will be determined by the natural break in the score points. Ê The points will be based on a percentage with 60% for the try- out and 40% for evaluations. The points in each category will be determined by: Ê Evaluations 40% Ê Clinics: 15 points possible (5 per day) Ê Teacher Evaluations: 15 points possible (times 2 teachers) Ê Report Card: 10 points possible Ê Essay: 50 points
Ê Try- outs (60%) Ê Tryout Judge Sheets: 100 points possible per judge (minimum of 3) Ê Final squad numbers are also dependent on the number of candidates trying out. The Spirit Staff and the CHHS administration make the final placement decision. It is final upon posting. New squad listings will be posted by midnight on APRIL 3, 2015 on the following website: Ê www.chhshuskyspirit.com Ê New squad members will be listed according to their try- out number. Ê
Results Ê Squad results will be posted according to the candidate s try- out number and will be on www.chhshuskyspirit.com after by midnight on April 3. (Let s face it it will be earlier but definitely after school). J
