Third Grade Strives to Protect our Earth Third graders were asked to create an Earth Day project to enter in a class contest. Students were given three weeks to complete their projects. They were asked to take something that would be thrown away and use it to create something useful. Prizes were awarded in three categories: Most Creative, Most Useful, and Most Appealing. This year s winners were Dakota Copeland, Dewitt Brookins, and Hannah Byrd. Dakota took a spice container and turned it into a bug box to win Most Creative. Dewitt Brookins made plant containers from newspaper and used a meat tray to carry his plants to win Most Useful. Hannah Byrd used toilet tissue rolls to create a small photo album/scrapbook that won Most Appealing. The winning poster in the class poster contest was titled Save the Rainforest. The poster was created by Tori Raine, Cassie Rogers, and Blake Hume. The three students who won the project contest were each given a $10 Walmart gift card. Poster contest winners received a goodie bag. Dacee Howse also received a goodie bag for earning Honorable Mention for the refrigerator she created as her Earth Day project. The third grade class also enjoyed a Dirt Cake as they celebrated Earth Day on April 22. (See more 3rd grade pictures on page 3.) On April 26th Summit Dental Hosts "Dentistry from the Heart" A Day of FREE Dental Health Services for Those Without Dental Insurance It s a day for those of all ages young and old. This day is being hosted by Dr.Mathew Johnson and local sponsors. Doctors, registered dental assistants, hygienists and volunteers are spending their day helping those in need. Page 5 Pre-School Roundup Wednesday, May 1, 12:00-3:15 For children who will be 4 by September 1, Pre-School Roundup will be Wednesday afternoon, May 1, from 12:00-3:15 PM. This is for Pre-K students who will be coming to school here next August 2013. Parents should pre-enroll their children in the front office by 12:00 noon. This will be followed by a play school provided by Mrs. Vandiver and FCCLA members for the rest of the day. Please arrive at school with the following: 1. Birth Certificate 2. Immunization Records 3. See you at The Bluff! Congratulations, Beta Members SBISD Beta members will perform their character skit at Nationals this summer. Our members won first place with their skit at this year s state competition; however, because every state does not have a character skit competition, it is not a competition at Nationals. Sulphur Bluff s Beta members have been invited to perform Just the Average Day of a Beta, a humorous skit, at the first general session of the national convention in Mobile, Alabama, so all states members can see what the character skit is all about. Sulphur Bluff ISD must offer a Summer School Program to limited English proficient (LEP) students who are eligible for admission to kindergarten or to the first grade at the beginning of the next school year if there are 10 or more eligible students. If there are not 10 eligible LEP students, the program will not be offered. Contact the school at 903-945-2460 if your child meets the criteria. First Grade Plants Trees Miss Harder's First Grade class planted one Crepe Myrtle tree and one Flowering Bradford Pear tree on Monday, April 22, 2013 to celebrate and learn about Earth Day. Both trees were generously donated by Sulphur Springs Fix & Feed. The students got to take turns digging the holes. Then they had the chance to spread the cow manure and potting soil and plant the trees. Several students have been out to water the trees since they were planted. Mrs. Flippin's 8th grade class will be helping the 1st grade keep them moist as they are working in the flower beds in front of the school. Page 6

Leading by Example The Sulphur Bluff Bears Varsity boys baseball team is on the verge of breaking into the playoffs for the first time in school history. With a win on Saturday in Yantis at 1pm the Bears will be guaranteed 2 nd Place in District 17-A. If the Bears get a little help in the form of a Roxton victory over North Hopkins Friday 4/26, the Bears could get the program s first boys baseball district title. Seniors Blake Brown, Collin Williams, Cade Argenbright, and Clay Mithchell (pictured) have done an excellent job of leading by example in many areas around the school throughout the year, as well as in the 2013 season. Going into Saturday s game Blake Brown has a 6-1 record, with a 2.02 ERA, and 86 strike outs in 45 innings pitched. Blake is helping himself out at the plate holding a solid.342 batting average. Blake was also a standout member of the boys basketball team that advanced past the Bi-District round of playoffs for the first time in school history. Each time I give Blake the ball, I see his confidence grow more and more. Collin Williams is having a stellar year for the Bears baseball team. Collin currently leads the team in batting average (.490), runs scored (24), and home runs (2). Collin has seen the ball well all year and continues to have quality at-bats in each game. Anytime we have needed a big hit Collin has come through. Cade Argenbright is probably the school s most versatile student athlete. He wants to get better every day he is on the field. Cade has done well throughout the season playing in the outfield alongside Landon Earley (Junior), Erin Zeringue (Junior), Dakota Emerson (Sophomore), Cody Vance (Freshman), Hudson Northcutt (Freshman). His willingness to do whatever it takes for the sake of the team has been Cade s greatest quality throughout this season. Cade was a member of the boys basketball team, a UIL Academics Regional Competitor, and will be representing Sulphur Bluff at the Region III-A Division 2 Track Meet this Saturday in Bullard. Although Clay Mitchell s batting average does not reflect how well he has seen the ball this year, his impact has been felt in every game. Clay has provided great defense for Sulphur Bluff throughout the year. He has seen action from first base, third base, and has shared time at catcher with Hunter Powers (Sophomore). Clay is the first one to extend his help to me and the underclassmen. His abilities inside the classroom are just as great as his abilities on the baseball diamond. The Senior boys should be proud of themselves for the mark that they are leaving on the Sulphur Bluff Boys Athletic Program. I am very grateful to have been a part of these four boys Senior Year. Regardless of what happens, the boys and Sulphur Bluff ISD should be proud of the precedent they have set for all future student athletes. I know I am!
