THE LEATHER GLOVE AND MITTEN INDUTRY 1953 Factory shipments of the Leather Glove and Mitten Industry in 1953 were valued at $9,686,441; a decrease of 17.6 p.c. from the $11,756,460 recorded in 1952. Cost of Materials used was 23.2 p.c. lower, while cost of fuel and electricity showed a decline of 11.3 p.c. This resulted in a net value of shipments of $4,832,932, 11.2 p.c. below the $5,444,805 net in 1952. Despite a decrease of 5.7 p.c. in employment, salaries and wages paid attained an all-time high at $3,603,161, which was 4.5 p.c. higher than the $3,447,086 paid in 1952. The value of leather gloves and mittens imported into Canada In 1953 was $1,343,428. an increase of 32.1 p.c. over the previous year. The United Kingdom and France remained the chief sources of supply. Women's kid gloves, chiefly from France, accounted for 35.5 p.c. of the total imports. Exports of Cp.nadian-made gloves amounted to only $109,198, an increase of 123 p.c. over 1952 ann a decline of 74 p.c. from the $376,730 recorded in 1949. TABLE 1.
