2017-2018 South Mississippi Gain on Forage Bull Test Final Report And Performance Forage Sires Private Treaty Sale

2017-2018 South Mississippi Gain on Forage Private Treaty Bull Sale Listing Test Results and Summary The Thirty Second Annual South Mississippi Gain-On-Forage Bull Test was conducted, November 10, 2017 through May 4, 2018 at the Holmes Cattle Company Bull Test Facility near Tylertown, Mississippi, Frank Holmes, Manager. The 2017-2018 test featured: 72 bulls owned by 7 Breeders 15 Angus Greenwood, MS 7 Red Brangus Bayou Frais Red Brangus Long Beach, MS 42 Angus 12 Star, Gramercy, LA 1 Beefmaster 2 South Poll 1 Beefmaster 3 Angus 1 Angus JG Ranch Amite, LA Wallace Beefmasters Magnolia, MS Gulf Shores Angus Summerdale, AL Sugarland Cattle Co. Vacherie, LA The primary purpose of the South Mississippi Gain-On-Forage Bull Test is to provide productive educational opportunities for beef cattle producers throughout the Southeastern United States. Holmes Cattle Company provides the grazing services and day to day management for the bull test. Mississippi State University Extension Service personnel collect, compile the data on the bulls, and provide test reports to bull owners. This bull test is endorsed by the Mississippi Beef Cattle Improvement Association. The Mississippi State University Extension Service provides research-based information, educational programs, and technology transfer focused on issues and needs of the people of Mississippi, enabling them to make informed decisions about their economic, social, and cultural well-being. This educational process is grounded in the bull performance test an official venue through which beef cattle producers can evaluate several performance parameters of young bulls for utilization in making informed breeding management decisions. Information collected during the minimum 168-day test is valuable in helping producers evaluate their breeding programs and the genetic merit of their foundation breeding stock. Additionally, this test serves as a marketing tool for bull owners to sell eligible bulls via private treaty transactions and as a source from which commercial beef cattle producers throughout the region can locate and acquire genetically superior, high quality, forage-tested herd sires. 2

2017 2018 South Mississippi Gain-On-Forage Bull Test RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BULLS PURCHASED VIA PRIVATE TTY SALE: By: Larry DeMuth, Retired Livestock Specialist, Mississippi State University Extension Service Remember, these are young bulls that are still growing and developing. 1. These bulls have been developing on well-fertilized forage grasses and small grain grazing. It takes 10 to 14 days for bulls to adjust to different diets. If you do not have adequate pasture grass at the time you purchase a bull(s), eligible for sale after completion of the South Mississippi Gain-On-Forage Bull Test via private treaty sale arrangement(s) with the breeder, you need to provide plenty of good quality hay and 5 to 8 pounds of grain per head per day. This will keep the bull growing and developing to your satisfaction, until good summer pasture grass is available. 2. Young bulls completing the South Mississippi Gain-On-Forage Bull Test Program should be able to breed 15 to 20 cows this spring. DO NOT EXPECT HIM TO SUCCESSFULLY BREED 25 TO 30 COWS he is not old enough; this requires a solid two-year-old bull. 3. DO NOT NEGLECT THE BULL ALL SUMMER. Remove the bull(s) from cows after 60 to 90 days (before July 15th), deworm and put him on good grass pasture. Preferably feed him 10 to 15 pounds of grain per day. This will allow the bull to continue maturing and developing to your satisfaction. For More Information concerning South MS Gain on Forage Bull Test: Contact: C.
