4 NOTE FROM SALE AND BULL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM COMMITTEE Welcome to the 6th edition of the Advancing the Breed Bull Sale. Growing numbers of high quality Braford cattle and increased demand for new genetics have created an opportunity to add this spring sale. Not only will this sale continue to provide future herd sires for your operation, but this will be our first time to include registered Braford females in our development and marketing program. We look for more future participants with emphasis on increasing the number of heifers in this spring sale. The United Braford Breeders committed 100 bulls and 30 heifers for this year s program and we expect to have bulls and 25 heifers available sale day. Every bull committed was objectively evaluated for structural integrity and soundness, weight gain, scrotal circumference, and ultrasound carcass attributes. Only the top bulls at the end of the program will be offered for sale the remainder will be evaluated on the rail in our steer program. Our end goal is to bring potential buyers quality lots through a comprehensive development and marketing program. Increased numbers and buyer demand have dictated stronger scrutiny of prospective lots using all of the information available. All bulls in the sale have passed a breeding soundness exam and are satisfactory potential breeders. A full, current EPD profile is presented on all lots. All of the data collected during the development of these bulls were used in the computation of their EPDs. Therefore, the EPDs of the bulls trump all other numerical descriptions of the bulls. We strive to bring you the best bulls for your evaluation and needs. Heifers were developed together but no effort was made to evaluate them statistically. Please refer to their respective EPDs as you strive to select heifers to incorporate into your breeding program. Cattle prices are dictating sound, quality bulls for your herd and this group is as good as we have put together. Graham Land & Cattle Company continues to outdo themselves with feeding and growing our bulls for optimal performance and longevity with a focused emphasis on having the bulls ready to immediately go to work in your program. Heifers were developed on a high roughage diet and should be ready to turn out with the bull of your choice immediately after the sale. Don t miss your opportunity to find your next great breeding piece from this unique program. Special thanks to all participants, buyers, Graham Land & Cattle, American Marketing Service, Committee members, and the UBB Board of Directors. 5 WELCOME! Welcome to our sixth Advancing the Breed Sale and our first ever spring sale. We were flattered by the demand and acceptance of high quality Braford genetics we saw in Lake Charles the past years and are anxious to provide our customers with another opportunity to acquire elite Braford germplasm. We are offering our most highly selected group of bulls ever in this offering. You will find top end herd sire prospects and quality range bulls, all who have gone through a rigorous gain test and intense selection pressure. You will find an impressive set of multi-generation herd sires and an outstanding set of first generation bulls that represent the best Hereford and Brahman genetics available blended into a high performing set of Braford herd sire prospects. We are selling a group of the most docile and easy going half blood bulls you will come across. We will also feature perhaps the stoutest ¼ Brahman, ¾ Hereford bull we have ever tested. We are also selling in this sale a set of 29 open, registered Braford heifers ready to breed to the bull of your choice. These are coming from the top Advancing the Breed bull producers. They are coming from Braford Breeders whose bulls have averaged $5,000 and $6,000 in past sales. If you are an existing breeder wishing to expand your herd or considering an investment in the Braford breed, there may not be a better way to start than with these high quality young females with their productive life ahead of them. Both bulls and females have been developed since weaning in a commercial feedyard setting with growth performance and EPDs, the most accurate means of comparison between animals, provided on all and ultrasound carcass data on the bulls. Since the evaluation period ended in late January for the cattle, all have been further developed on grass traps with supplemental feed. All cattle are registered with the United Braford Breed. Each bull has passed a Breeding Soundness Evaluation performed by Dr. Steve Schultz, of Franklin, Texas. Do you need a little more ear on your Angus based cow herds? Have you been noticing the value of some of those Super Baldie heifers and the overall demand for Bos indicus influenced replacement heifers? Bos indicus influenced heifers consistently out averaged the straight English and Exotic heifers at the prestigious Southern Producers heifer sale in Hattiesburg, MS, and in sales throughout the south and this set of Braford bulls are the kind that can compete. All bulls will sell in the order they are graded by the ranchers and buyers on Wednesday evening during the social and meal. We invite all to join us for the grading and social hour. You will meet some great people and see some great cattle, and we want to know what our customers need and like! This is a set of herd sire prospects you can buy with confidence based on the objective measurements you have at your disposable, the wide cross section of cattle evaluated in this test and the confidence you can place in your fellow breeders. It is truly an opportunity to Advance the Breed and your program. VIEWING VIDEOS Videos of sale cattle can be viewed at: Advancing the Braford Breed 6 3

7 HOW THE CATTLE WERE DEVELOPED The Brafords in this sale represent several individual Braford breeding programs. They were bred by top breeders in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida. Because the offering was assembled as calves produced in varying management and environmental settings, to provide a basis for making judicious comparisons, the sale catalog lists EPDs and performance measurements recorded in the development program in which all the bulls were treated alike. The bulls in this sale were calved from September 1, 2014 through the end of December The bulls were checked in at Graham Land & Cattle Co. in Gonzales, Texas on September 3, After a brief warm-up period, the bulls were officially weighed in at the start of the evaluation period on September 25. The bulls were developed in two groups: the 100 numbered bulls were purebreds in one group and the 200 numbered percentage bulls were developed in a separate group. The bulls were fed at Graham in a commercial feedyard environment. Bulls calved through October 18 were evaluated with scrotal circumference measured and ultrasound scans performed on November 17. The younger bulls were similarly evaluated on January 5, The average daily gain (ADG) presented in this catalog represents the period from September 25, 2015 through January 5, Weight per day of age (WDA) was computed as of the January 5 weight. Ultrasound data on the bulls were collected by a CUP certified technician and evaluated in the CUP lab. Ultrasound data were collected on all bulls within the recommended ultrasound age window for yearling bulls. Yearling scrotal circumference and frame score were recorded at the time bulls were scanned. At the conclusion of the evaluation period, the bulls were moved to nearby traps where they were further developed on a high roughage diet. Breeding soundness exams were performance in late February. The bulls will remain in Gonzales until they are trucked to the sale facility in Lake Charles, Louisiana shortly before the March 17 sale. Advancing the Braford Breed 6 5
