It s hard to believe that March is here and hopefully Spring is just around the corner! On January 19th the Youth Action Committee hosted a County Wide Bowling event that more than 30 4-Her s participated in. The picture above is a few of the 4-Hers having fun at the bowling event. This was a great opportunity for many of the clubs to hang out together and have fun! On March 7th, more than 70 4-Hers and their friends and families will be attending a Dubuque Fighting Saints Hockey Game. We love offering fun events for our 4-H clubs and families and we look forward to offering other fun activities like this! Hopefully our last snow storm is out of the way and we can look forward to the weather warming up a little bit! With warmer weather comes thoughts of fair. The deadline to have your project areas and livestock information listed in 4hOnline is May 15th (rabbits are July 1st)! If you need help entering this information into 4hOnline please stop by the Extension Office, give us a call or send an email. Our Extension Staff is here to help answer any questions you may have! Applications are available at the Dubuque County Extension office or on our website and are due to the Dubuque County Extension Office by May 1st. Sheep/Meat Goat Weigh In March 22 8am 11am Western Dubuque High School, Ag Room Cost: $2/animal for tag fee A member may weigh-in up to 8 pigs; pigs may not exceed 50 pounds at weigh-in. April 26 10am-12pm Dubuque County Fairgrounds Cost: $2/ animal for tag fee 10 Goats and 10 lambs may be weighed-in; Recommended weight: 40 pounds for lambs Any 4-H er or FFA member exhibiting at the Iowa State Fair needs to weigh in their state fair animals on this day as well. There is a $5 fee for each market lamb or goat identified as a possible state fair entry.

Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. with sessions starting at 9 a.m.. The cost for this event will be $5. Friends are welcome at this event and need not be enrolled in 4- H. This will only be a morning event, lunch will not be included. All of the different project areas are showcased on the registration form that is included in the newsletter. Please preregister both 4- H ers & guests by March 28th by calling the Extension Office at 563-583-6496. Clothing Event July Communications Day May 17 Join us for a day of inspiring presentations, cool exhibits, and side-splitting skits all brought to you by your 4-H friends! Get the edge by giving a presentation, show off your skills in a Share the Fun skit, perform a skit, show everyone how to make some really neat stuff in a working exhibit, or try an extemporaneous speech on for size. The possibilities are endless! Sign up by May 2nd to participate and possibly earn a trip to the Iowa State Fair!... and don't forget to come cheer on your friends! Presentations and extemporaneous speaking will be held at the Dubuque County Extension Office starting at 9 a.m. Working exhibits and Share-the-Fun skits will follow shortly after. Show off your best outfit at the 2014 Dubuque County Clothing Event July 8 at 5pm at the Extension Office. Participate in Fashion Revue (created garments), Clothing Selection (purchased garments), or the $15 Challenge. Entries are due June 15. More information will be in your County Fairbook. Rabbit Workshop The Dubuque County 4-H Rabbit Committee is hosting a rabbit workshop on Tuesday, March 25th in the 4-H Building at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds from 6:30 8:30 p.m. Registration will begin at 6:15 p.m. The workshop will focus on Standard of Perfection in different breeds of rabbits. The night will consist of the following: large group session, followed by a panel presentation about different breeds of rabbits and learning stations for the participants. Several different learning books will be available to purchase. Please go to the Dubuque County website and click on the Rabbit Workshop Registration form. Complete the form and send to the Extension Office by March 18th. There will be no fee for this workshop. Please plan to attend to learn more about showing and raising rabbits. Invite a friend to come with you. Also, please mark your calendar for a mock rabbit show and workshop on Saturday, June 7th in the 4-H Building at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds from 9:00 11:30 a.m. More information to come. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO SHOW Read fair book rules and regulations carefully for each division. Each exhibitor (except horse, dog and pet exhibitors) must attend FSQA or have a current test on file. Market Beef: Market beef were tagged and identified at weigh-in in December. Animals must arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11a.m. and will be released Wednesday at 4p.m. All animals will be weighed on Monday following check in. Animals will be sold according to their show weight with a 3% allowance for shrink. Breeding Beef: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Cow/Calf pairs must have been shown as a breeding heifer and all calves must be born after January 1, 2013. Animals must arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11a.m. and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. All animals must be checked in at the scale on Monday following check in. Dairy: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Animals must arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 12:30pm and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. Bucket Bottle Calves: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Written records must turned into the extension office by July 1st. All animals arrive on Monday between 8am and 12:30pm and will be released following the bucket/bottle show Monday night. Meat Goats: Market Goats are tagged and identified at weigh-in. Exhibitors need to verify their information in 4-H Online before May 15th. Animals must arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11am and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. Horse and Pony: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Entry information must include photos or drawings of the animal. An intent to participate form needs to be on file at the extension office by July 1 indicating the classes exhibitors will enter. Animals must arrive by 8am Thursday and will be released after the show. Pets: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Pet folders must be submitted to the extension office by July 20. Animals must be checked in by 2pm on Friday for conference judging. Poultry: Poultry must be from a Pollorum-Typhoid clean flock and will be tested upon check-in at the fairgrounds. The charge for testing is $0.50 per bird. Animals should arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11a.m. and will be released Wednesday at 4p.m. An intent to participate form is due July 1. Rabbits: All animals must be identified in 4-H Online and an intent to participate form is due by July 1. Animals should arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Thursday between 6-7pm. Market Sheep: Market Sheep are identified at weigh-in. Exhibitors need to verify their information in 4-H Online before May 15th. Animals should arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11am. and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. All animals will be weighed on Monday following check in. Breeding Sheep: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Animals should arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11am and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. Swine: Swine are tagged and identified at weigh-in. Exhibitors need to verify their information in 4-H Online before May 15th. A Premise ID number must be online for each swine exhibitor. Animals should arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 12pm. and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. All animals must weigh between 240-300 pounds to be blue ribbon eligible. All derby animals will be scanned for carcass quality.

2014 Dubuque County Junior Project Day Join us for Project Day on April 5th in the 4-H Building at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds! Registration begins at 8:45am with sessions starting at 9am. The cost is $5 per person. If you cannot afford this, scholarships are available. Friends are welcome at this event and need not be enrolled in 4-H! Sessions will be assigned on a first come, first served basis, so register early! Deadline to register is Friday, March 28th. No late forms will be accepted. Project areas are subject to change without notice. PROJECT AREAS FOR 2014 Horticulture Gnome Garden Jump into spring and test out your creativity as you join our Master Gardeners to produce your own mini flower and garden project! We will provide some decorations for you but feel free to bring your own to put in your mini garden! Food and Nutrition Making Homemade Pretzels Want to learn how to make homemade pretzels? Then this one is for you! You will learn how to make fancy pretzel designs with bread dough, bake your pretzels, and enjoy your cooking in two sessions. We ll send you home with the recipe so you can perfect your pretzel-making skills with your JUNIOR 4-H ers Visual Arts Tissue Paper Vase Do you love being creative? Then you will enjoy making your own tissue paper vase. We will provide you with the supplies needed, but it s up to you to make your own decorative vase! You will have fun making this crafty project! Home Improvement Wood Name Blocks Personalize your own name blocks as you build and create your project out of wood. With scrapbook paper, varying sizes of wood blocks, and stencil letters, you ll be amazed at how professional your work will look. You won t want to miss singing up for this project! May 15th Deadline If you are planning on taking any building projects or livestock projects to the 2014 Dubuque County Fair they must be entered into 4hOnline by MAY 15th! If they are not entered by then you will not be able to take them. This means if you are planning on taking something in woodworking for example please make sure it is listed under your project area tab in 4hOnline.
