CMCS Chowder Chatter August, 2017 Page 2 Commodore s Message Commodore Sandy Canning We are well into summer here in Southwest Florida and are in our usual afternoon thunder shower pattern, with more than usual morning storms hitting our area. Be careful out on the water. At our July membership meeting, our very own Bob Macomber gave us a very entertaining and informative presentation on the first tourists in wooden ships to our area. As always, he did a superb job of making our history come alive! Everyone should have gotten my e-mail blast regarding the CDC (Club Development Committee). Please consider serving your Club in some capacity. CMCS will only be as good as our members make it. Steve and Theresa Roake have been visiting potential cruising destinations all around our area many we ve never been to. Personally, we ve printed out the information from the last Chowder Chatter to keep on our boat as a resource. Thank you to the Roake s for partaking in this adventure and for reporting on it to benefit all our members! And the good news, Theresa says there s more to come. Our Summerset Regatta is coming in October. Make sure to get your sponsorship forms and money in to support youth sailing. CMCS provides scholarships for our children and grandchildren, as well as children from families who need financial assistance. Support the future of sailing. Events coming include our Summer Picnic Friday July 29, the Parrothead Cruise August 18-20, and Gypseas in Paradise, Sept. 1-5. Get to know your fellow Club members by participating in our Club events and cruises. Fair winds and following seas Sandy Canning Commodore s/v Rum Daze Vice Commodore of Summerset Report Vice Commodore of Summerset Allen Fiske Plans are still coming together for Summerset 2017. I need final answers from Salty Sam's and Moss Marine. We are In good shape with Bonita Bills, Pink Shell and Diamond Head. NOR should go out within two weeks. We only have a handful of Boat Name Sponsors. Please consider getting yours to me. The kids will appreciate it. Allen Fiske Vice Commodore of Summerset Rear Commodore-Racing Report Rear Commodore Racing James Gallagher While there are no recent races to report on this month, there has been a lot of activity when it comes to planning. The race season starts in September with the first major race of the area traditionally being the Summerset Race here in Fort Myers sponsored by our club. It attracts boats from Marco, Naples, Burnt Store, Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte. A reminder, all active race boats should renew their WFPHRF registration. Make sure you note any changes to me and send a copy of the update. Meeting Announcement To make the regional race program more seamless, I have met with the other clubs to coordinate not just schedules, but come up with coordinated and jointly sponsored events. This will drive some changes to our traditional race line up not major but certainly a change. To get all of our sailors inputs we are having a very important meeting to be held: CMCS RACE MEETING A VISION FOR THE FUTURE August 22 at 6:00 at the Lazy Flamingo on MacGregor

CMCS Chowder Chatter August, 2017 Page 3 Rear Commodore-Racing Report Rear Commodore Racing James Gallagher near the Cape Coral Bridge All interested parties including captains, potential captains, crew, and committee members, old and new, are invited. The beer is cheap and we will order a few appetizers. Race Announcement The second big announcement is that we have a new race event coming up very soon. The Naples Sailing and Yacht Club has organized a race from Fort Myers Beach marker SC to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. For the entry fee you get a free slip in St. Petersburg and two BBQ dinners. The race will start at 12:00 on Friday Sept 1, and return on Sunday. Even if you race casually it will be a great event. Look for more information on the website, or there is a letter that I am sending out to our racing email list that includes the notice of race. This will be one of the distance races for the Boat of the Year Awards! James Gallagher Rear Commodore Racing Rear Commodore of Cruising Report We ve got a couple of great upcoming cruises planned for you. First up is the Parrothead Cruise at Tween Waters from August 18-20. Reservations for boats are closed but you can contact the marina directly closer to the date Rear to see if there are any cancellations. Landlub Commodore Cruising Theresa Roake bers are welcome but please let Cruise Leaders Jean and Gary Blessing know if you are coming so they can plan accordingly. It should be a great time in the Jimmy Buffett tradition. You never know if Jimmy himself may make an appearance. Next up is the Naples Boat Club cruise over Labor Day weekend from September 1-4. There s a lovely clubhouse, Rear Commodore of Cruising Report pool and tiki bar. Downtown Naples is just a stroll away. Details are in the fliers elsewhere in the Chowder Chatter. Please contact your cruise leaders Bob and Cathy Friedel as soon as possible as slips are very limited this year. Thanks to all who completed our survey. You gave lots of great feedback and ideas that will help us plan for the future! That s all for now. Hope to see you out on the water. Theresa Roake Rear Commodore Cruising: Theresa Roake Cruising Destinations Naples Area Theresa and I have continued visiting potential cruising destinations hoping to learn more about what s out there and maybe learn something about some of the places we ve Steve Roake avoided in the past. Last month, we visited Marco Island s marinas. This month, we visited some of Naples marinas (all this by car!) It seems that most cruising guides focus on the Gordon River in Naples - probably for good reason! From Marco Island to Gordon Pass there are a number of good anchorages. I ve decided to cover anchorage opportunities separately from the marina evaluation. Upon entering the Gordon River, the first marina you will come to is Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club and Fuel dock about a mile from the mouth of the river entrance at channel marker 20. There are a few transient slips but this is mostly known as a fuel stop near the Gulf for those not wishing to venture further up the river to downtown Naples. Other than fuel and a small store, there isn t much around. Since this facility is on the east side of the Gordon River, there really isn t much ashore

CMCS Chowder Chatter August, 2017 Page 4 Cruising Destinations as it is just about all residential (East Naples). The Yacht Club itself is a private, members only restaurant and wet slip facility with a very large rack storage facility further up the small channel from the fuel facility and marina. Check with the fuel dock for wet slip transient slip availability and price. There are no showers and restrooms available to transients. There is also a County boat ramp (Bayview Park boat ramp) at this location. Hamilton Harbor Fuel Dock: (239) 417-6717. The Naples City Dock is located near downtown and has its own small community of shops and restaurants nearby at the end of the dock. There are also mooring balls available. Unfortunately, the docks have recently been torn out and are under re-construction. Upon completion, new concrete floating docks will be available. They are not scheduled to re-open until late 2017 or early 2018. It is unknown what the future transient availability or price will be. In the past, there were washrooms, showers, pumpout, fuel, snack bar, etc. on the docks. There is no pool. Naples City Dock: (239)213-3070. Naples Boat Club is located within walking distance of the main downtown shopping areas on Fifth Ave South. Walking through the adjacent neighbors is truly old Naples. The marina is managed for the benefit of individual slip owners so availability is dependent on who s home. The marina has concrete floating slips capable of accommodating vessels of most sizes. The facility has a pool, outdoor Tiki hut for use by the guests, large air-conditioned clubhouse for use of the marina guests, gas grills, very nice washrooms and showers, a nice casual restaurant at the end of the docks, and marina services adjacent, including Diversified Services, with a good parts department and ships store. WiFi, fuel and ice are available. There is also a Travelift and haul out facilities adjacent to the slips. Slips are priced at $2.25/night + $10 for electric, subject to availability. Naples Boat Club (239) 263-2774. Cruising Destinations Comments are always welcome! Please let us know if we missed something! As we work our way north, we will be looking at marinas that can accommodate sail boats to fifty feet, with drafts of at least six feet. We need your help - especially with some of the anchorage locations. We re looking for recent personal experiences anchoring in places within a days sail. We ll start with Marco Island - Smokehouse Bay and Factory Bay. Next will be Little Marco and Keewaydin Islands. Then, in Naples, is Champney Bay and Doctors Pass. Moving north, Big Carlos Pass / Estero Bay (now being dredged), San Carlos Pass / Fort Myers Beach, Glover s Bight (Cape Coral), Shell Point, Bimini Basin (Cape Coral), Merwin Key / Picnic Island, York Island (St. James City), Sanibel Bight, Chino Island, Buck Key / Roosevelt Channel (Captiva Island), Safety Harbor, Captiva Pass, Useppa Island, Pelican Bay, Charlotte Harbor, Cape Haze, Englewood Beach and Lemon Bay. Thanks for following! Next time we ll visit the Ft. Myers Beach / Cape Coral areas. Steve & Theresa Roake s/v Lionheart 2017 CMCS Officers Commodore: Sandy Canning Vice Commodore: Bob Duff Vice Commodore Summerset: Allen Fiske Rear Commodore Cruising: Theresa Roake Rear Commodore Racing: James Gallagher Fleet Yeoman: Kathleen Vance Fleet Purser: Tom Patterson Past Commodore: Don Lawson

CMCS Chowder Chatter August, 2017 Page 5 Membership and Recruitment Membership and Recruitment Chairperson Bev Duff AHOY CMCS members! It s hot out there! And thankfully we get the thundershowers to cool things off somewhat. Mother Nature washes down our boats which is great if we don t have leaks. The July meeting had a wonderful speaker, Bob Macomber who brought out the sailors to hear his tales about the Original Yachtsman of SW Florida. It is always fun to learn about our area from a historians' perspective. We had several guests and folks who have visited us this summer. A CMCS welcome to Bobby & Shelley Brooks and their daughter, Sienna. They are now full time Florida residents and Bobby is the Dir. of Operations of Offshore Sailing School. "A lifetime of sailing experience in Texas and elsewhere". They are looking to be very active members, checking all the boxes...! We welcome back to the area, Warren & Jan Bullock who are former CMCS members. They have moved back to SW Florida and are looking forward to getting active in boating once again. Welcome Home! There were several visitors at the July meeting: Roy Matter, Sunny Sue Cesare as well as the Bullocks. New member applications went home with these guests so hopefully more CMCS burgees will be flying on boats in local waters. Thank you all for wearing your CMCS name tags to the meetings and other functions. It is so helpful for us to get to know one another! The best way to get to know others in the club is Membership and Recruitment to attend the functions we offer throughout the year! I will say that August is our slow, laid back month. Check the Chowder Chatter for the details. The Tween Waters Marina, Parrott Head Cruise is mid August. All the available slips are reserved, however, members are welcome to join us via land cruising & I m pretty sure there s room at the Inn. Then Labor Day Weekend we re cruising to Naples for our Gypsies in Paradise Cruise. The race of the fall season is the Kayusa Cup at South Seas Resort. Check the Chowder Chatter for racing form & cruising info. Look forward to seeing the CMCS burgees flying from your boats! Bev Duff, Membership and Recruitment Chairperson FYI...National Parks In late August, the one-time-fee pass for seniors 62 and older to get into National Parks increases from $10 to $80. They can be purchased at Ding Darling (closed on Friday) for the $10 price until August 27. https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/senior-pass-changes.htm David Naumann LIBERTY ASHORE Liberty Ashore Chairpersons Wendy Cook and Julie Long Greetings Y all! I hope everyone is staying dry and relatively cool this month. The last month & a half have been quiet for your Liberty Ashore team, but we are currently prepping for the event of the season the CMCS Summer Picnic! By the time this is published, I am sure we will have enjoyed a beautiful day on the beach hanging out and chowing down with fellow CMCS ers, and will all be languishing through the remainder of the Dog Days of Summer! Ciao! Wendy Cook and Julie Long Liberty Ashore Chairpersons s/v s Escapade and Gone with the Wind
