AMA CHARTER CLUB #397 NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS NOVEMBER, 2016 CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN! Hi Guys, it s November, a time to give thanks! We have a lot to be thankful for this year. As a club, we are thankful for growing our membership; we had a good outdoor season, got a new runway, and new start stands. We did need to cancel some fun fly s due to weather, but I guess that s to be expected. I hope next year we have more members at the field and at our fun fly events. If you have an idea for a fun fly or field event, please bring your suggestion up at our meetings. One more thing, now we can fly indoors close to home, at Naperville Yard on Monday and Wednesday from 12:00 to 3:00.It s a lot of fun. If you have seen some blasts I sent out concerning a club build, yes we will be building foam airplanes before our next meeting. I sent out a parts list for the airplane a few of us have built and flown both indoors and out. These planes do not fly in wind, but are great indoors. If you don t have an indoor plane and are interested, join us for the build. If you were not at the last meeting, we nominated the existing Board to run the club next year. It will be my pleasure to guide our club through another year, but we cannot do it all ourselves. We need all of you to help and become involved in order for us to have a successful club. I will be asking for more help this year from all of you. Being the season to give thanks, let us not forget the ones of us that have passed and cannot be with us. So take time to be with your families, friends and share the spirit of the season with all. Fly Safe, PRES Tommy

History of Flight Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Joe Bartek This October I saw the last History of Flight Air Show for the 2016 Season at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in New York s Hudson River Valley. Those folks carry Giant Scale to extremes. Many of the planes on display and in the air are 100% reproductions, like a Fokker DR-1, an Albatros DVa and a Curtiss Robin. A Ryan NYP Spirit of St. Louis replica with a Wright J5 engine was taxied under its own power on the field. It flew last December. There are others that are at least partially original, like a 1909 Bleriot, a Curtiss JN-4 Jenny, a Tiger Moth, and two New Standard biplanes from 1929 that are used for rides. Weather was a bit cool and overcast, but winds were calm, so flying was good. The Show covers about 30 years from 1909. They hopped 3 pioneers - the Bleriot with its wheezy 3 cylinder radial Anzani engine, a Curtiss Model D Pusher, and a 1911 Hanriot monoplane powered by a 1939 4 cylinder Franklin. A tour around the Rhinebeck Bleriot is available at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/bleriot/tour-nf.html. One of the Stars of the Show was the Curtiss Jenny, which had a part in an old air show melodrama. An escaped prisoner, really a stuffed dummy in striped clothes, hijacked the Jenny as it took off. 1909 Bleriot in flight 10/08/16 Curtiss JN-4 (Pensacola markings) in flight 10/08/16 Although the World War I show was scheduled for the next day, the fighter planes of WWI were represented in the air by a fine looking Albatros replica in Bavarian Oktoberfest colors and a Fokker DR-1 in a very detailed Camo scheme. Replica Albatros DV in flight 10/08/16 Replica Fokker DR-1 in flight 10/08/16

History of Flight Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Joe Bartek As befits an Air Show in October, a little pumpkin bombing took place. Folks in the passenger seats of the 2 New Standard biplanes tossed out pumpkins toward a stack of barrels near the runway. The Spirit of St. Louis replica by the Old Rhinebeck team is a beautiful reproduction, but can t overcome the original s faults, especially the poor visibility out of the cabin. It needs a little help with ground handling, too. New standard biplane taxiing 10/08/16 Reproduction Ryan NYP Spirit of St. Louis Another good strong plane from the early 30 s, the Curtiss Robin, was represented by a faithful reproduction. The Robin shows up in history as the mount of wrong way Corrigan, who filed a flight plan for a New York to California flight in one, but ended up in Ireland. I saw a second Robin on floats at the Cradle of Aviation museum near the old Roosevelt field, which has a fine static collection concentrating on Grumman, but that s another story. Curtiss Robin replica in flight 10/08/16 The rest of the Golden Age was represented in the show by a Tiger Moth, a Piper J-2, its ancestor the Taylor Cub, and a Curtiss Jr. pusher. All of these flew. It was a fun packed 2 hours and I took lots of pictures. There is also a static museum at the aerodrome with lots more planes from this era. A red Monocoupe 90 with a radial engine, a Sopwith Camel, a Morane-Saulnier A-1, and a Nieuport 10 that once belonged to Nungesser were standouts. Details of the collection, including pictures of 50 rare engines, are available at http://oldrhinebeck.org/.
