1 AMA CHARTER CLUB #397 NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS JULY, 2016 Hi guys, its July and I hope you all had a great 4 th and wished a Happy Birthday to our great country. We are all very lucky to live in a country with the freedoms we have in the good old USA. This month, on July 31 st, we have the annual event with the Barnstormers. They will be hosting at their new field located on Stearns Road west of Rt. 59. We need as many members as possible to go up there and fly and help us take the traveling plaque back. If you were not at the meeting, the event will be the Washer Drop with Spot Landing. This year you can use a mechanical drop, servo type, or what we will supply, which are a stick, cup and rubber band. You all know that I will be using a servo type drop. New this year, all pilots will have three drops and three spot landings. So get out and practice and let s win this year. On a different note, as the summer goes on, the field that surrounds Springbrook Airfield gets very dangerous to walk through the weeds. Right now they are over my head in some places. It is very hard to walk through, so if you drop your airplane in the weeds don t go out alone to look for it, have someone with you. It is so easy to fall and hurt yourself that an airplane is not worth taking the chance. Use the Buddy System. Let s all take advantage of the great weather and get out and fly. Practice the washer drop. The Pres. will be giving out points to all members who Practice. Fly Safe Pres. Tommy

7 Fun Fly Committee Air Show Report It was a beautiful day - clear sky with lots of sun. Over twenty members joined together for the air show on June 25 th. Temperatures did get into the low 90s and the wind made for some challenging flights but we were up to the task!! The 11:00 show went very well and the 15+ members of the public enjoyed our efforts. We had eleven people sign up for the Try to Fly opportunity. Thanks to Tom Camp and Mick Pfeifer for making that happen. A big thanks to the pilots who participated in the show Dave Engel, Tom Camp, Mick Pfeifer, Dave Carlson, Hank Bourassa, Jim Farina, and Bill Hickey. You guys put on a great show giving the guests a sample of large, small, scale and sport aircraft and of course an unbelievable series of maneuvers by Hank in his T-Rex 550 helicopter. And the Tom and Mick duo performed a series of six coordinated maneuvers which ended with both doing loops at the same time over the center of the field pretty impressive! And I give a personal special thanks to the members who assisted in making this all come together Tom Camp, Bruce Haynes, Al Spencer, Larry Dudkowski, and Dennis Grillo. Fly Safe!! 10 Fun Fly Committee Airplane Beauty Contest - June 28, 2016 We held the annual beauty contest at the June monthly meeting. There were fourteen interesting aircraft brought for members to judge. The winners were: Finish Kit/Scratch Built ARF Plane Helicopter/Quadcopter Plane First Bill Hickey Dave Engel Hank Bourassa Second Bob Johnson Tom Camp Dave Carlson Third Ray Good Jack MacPherson Best of Show was Bill Hickey s Pietenpol Air Camper. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who participated!! Jeff Gittelman for the Fun Fly Committee Prop Masters at Barnstormers July 31, 2016 & Practice on July 10 th. The event is the Washer Drop. You can use either a servo activated or powered dropping device or the equipment supplied by the Prop Masters. The equipment available will consist of a wooden skewers, rubber bands and paper cups. Here s how it works: A target will be marked on the field. Each pilot will receive an official washer. The pilot must take off and make one circuit of the field. After completing the circuit, the pilot can begin the drop run at his discretion. Dropping the washer is done by performing some maneuver such as a loop, a roll or holding inverted flight until the washer falls off the skewer or out of the cup or utilizing an onboard release device. The pilot will then land and perform a spot landing. Rules. 1. The payload consists of a standard 5/8 steel washer. The approximate dimensions are a 1-3/4 outside diameter, and 11/16 inside diameter with two 12 streamers of ribbon attached. You must use the washer supplied by the Prop Masters with no alterations. 2. The pilot must take off and make at least one circuit of the field. After completing the circuit, the pilot can began the drop run at his discretion. Each pilot will make three drops of a washer. 3. Minimum altitude over the target is 6 feet. Washers dropped from lower than 6 feet will NOT be scored. Scoring: The total of the distances from each of the three washer drops plus the distance from the closest of the spot landings will be the pilot s score. The lowest 5 scores from each club will be totaled with the lowest total being the winner. Fun Fly #6: Please note that a practice session for this event will be held on Sunday July 10 th. Jeff Gittelman for the Fun Fly Committee
11 Fun Fly Committee Westmont Street Fair & Cruisin Night Again this year the Palos R/C Flying Club will sponsor a display & demo at the Westmont weekly Cruisin Nights & Street Fair. In addition, members of the Woodland Aero Modelers (Downers Grove) and Prop Masters R/C Aero (Naperville) have indicated they will participate. EAA Chapter 461 (Bolingbrook) will be there to promote the Young Eagles program. Herb Killian of Palos R/C is scheduled to have his full-scale sailplane on display. And if that weren t enough, Chicago Drone Racers have been invited to put on a demo. All members are encouraged to come out, wear your club shirt, and bring an aircraft to display. Please bring your own folding tables and club information & promotional materials. Experienced pilots are invited to demo small foamies, helis, and multi-rotors. This is our golden opportunity to introduce and explain model aviation to many hundreds of new spectators. This is our opportunity to offset the negative media attention we have experienced in recent years. The event is on Thursday July 21 from 5 9pm. Set-up is after 3:30 to 5 at the Manning Parking Lot, 221 North Cass Ave, in downtown Westmont. The lot is 2 ½ blocks north of the BNSF railroad tracks. Note: Cass Ave. is closed to traffic during the Fair; enter from the side streets at Norfolk Street. A flyer showing more information is included with this newsletter. For more details or questions please me at dlmiendersma@netzero.net or call Westmont Events at Cruisin Nights features over 200 custom cars each week. The restaurants & lounges are open; various vendors are located throughout. There are multiple activities for kids. For a complete listing of each week, visit WestmontCruisinNights.com. For weather concerns the day of event you may call the above phone # until approximately 4pm. Dennis Miendersma, Palos R/C Flying Club

14 Carl Bachhuber s Planes at Fox Valley Joe Bartek One of the reasons I make it a point to go to Fox Valley Aero s Windy City Warbirds meet is that I expect Carl Bachhuber from Mayville, WI, to bring some spectacular Giant scale planes. While you can see stills and videos of a variety of these on Carl s website: It s very special to see them in flight at a great field like Fox Valley. This year, I was able to see Carl s Heinkel He-111 h6 in the air. It is famous from the Battle of Britain movie, where it was out classed by British Hurricanes. Before WWII, the prototypes were disguised as airliners. The wing span of this highly detailed scale warbird is 178 inches and it weighs 100 pounds including crewmembers and dummy bomb load. It flies very realistically on a pair of DA-60 gasoline motors. Carl went a bit easy on the power, because he didn t want to spoil the nacelles for in-line motors. Still it rolled down the grass for a great takeoff. Once in the air, it flew very well, and dropped its dummy bombs on the center of the runway, with no trouble from the 15 mph cross wind. Carl also brought along a Convair 580/Canadair CC-109 in Canadian Armed forces colors. Wingspan is 200 inches, and it was built in It is powered by 80 cc motors, and a Canadian Mounty stands in the door.
15 Carl Bachhuber s Planes at Fox Valley Joe Bartek Last year, Carl brought a between the wars flying boat in Marine Corps livery, a Sikorsky S-43 JRS-1 "Baby Clipper" from 1935, besides the Convair/Canadair. It was just a bit larger than the Heinkel, and was finished in It was powered by 2 DA-100 s, which were easier to hide in the radial cowlings of the Sikorsky. Always wondering what s coming next from Carl, I looked on his website and found the Northrup RF-15a Reporter which was maidened (and crashed) this last Spring. This is a slick looking photo recon version of the P-61 Black Widow. Shorts in the elevator servo extensions brought it down. With good luck on the rebuild, it might make it to Warbirds next year.
