HOW IT ALL BEGAN Dr. Brent Saik, President of Alberta Sports Vision Institute, is a truly remarkable individual who is an inspiration and an example to us all. Brent is an exemplary member of the Edmonton and Strathcona communities, generously erously contributing his time and funds, and has been an outstanding volunteer fundraiser for the Alberta Cancer Foundation in support of the Cross Cancer Institute since 1996. Brent s relationship with the Cross Cancer Institute began in 1994 when his father, Terry, was lost to cancer. One of Terry s final wishes was that Brent would carry on the Saik legacy of community support and continue raising funds for the Cross Cancer Institute. te. Brent made good on his promise and in 1996 he began the Annual Terry Saik Memorial Golf Tournament. The event has raised nearly $35,000 to date. In 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2011 Brent organized one of the most successful events in the history of the Alberta Cancer Foundation the World s Longest Hockey Game. The initial game held in memory of his father, Terry, raised $150,000 to purchase a gene analyzer used in pediatric cancer research at the Cross Cancer Institute. Two years later, the World s Longest Hockey Game raised more than double a record $350,000 in loving memory of Brent s wife, Susan, who succumbed to cancer in June 2003. Funds from the 2005 game were directed towards the purchase of a microarray platform and the unprecedented $558,468 raised from the 2008 game allowed the Cross Cancer Institute to purchase a confocal microscope. The 2011 game was the most successful yet, raising a whopping $1,100,000 in support of a new linear accelerator (used in radiation treatments) for the Cross Cancer Institute. But perhaps more important than any sum of money raised was the display of humanity and the indomitable spirit of a man, so deeply touched by cancer, that captured the heart of a nation and motivated them to join Dr. Brent Saik in redefining the future of cancer. Brent s demonstration of character, courage and generosity is truly admirable.

THE IMPACT OF YOUR SUPPORT The Cross Cancer Institute is northern Alberta s own comprehensive cancer centre e and a leader in cutting-edge cancer research, prevention, treatment and care across the province and beyond. As one of 17 cancer centres directly supported by the Alberta Cancer Foundation, the Cross Cancer Institute has been a vital part of redefining the future of cancer in Alberta since its opening in 1968. Thanks to amazing azing events like the World s Longest Hockey Game, Alberta patients have access to innovative and groundbreaking research and discoveries leading to new cancer treatments and superior patient care, all right here in Edmonton. This year s game will directly support the purchase of a PET-MR scanner at the Cross Cancer Institute. PET-MR is the next generation of PET Imaging sophisticated technology that can provide exquisite images of cancer in its earliest stages, and offer unique insights into the behaviours of cancers, how they respond to treatment and what causes the negative side effects. This research will improve doctors ability to deliver the right treatment to the right patient at the right time. PET-MR will also improve the accuracy of radiation therapy delivery. Scans can be performed with 50 per cent less radiation exposure to patients. Radiation exposure is a source of concern for any patient, but must be monitored with particular care for pediatric and young adult patients, who are still growing and developing, as well as adults who need multiple scans during treatment. The continued support of participants, donors, volunteers, and sponsors of the World s Longest Hockey Game is helping the Alberta Cancer Foundation to continue powering change and accelerating discovery. We know that with you as a partner in progress, we will make a difference today for Albertans and their families facing cancer.
