Norwell High School Clippers Student Accomplishments APRIL 2012 Norwell Arts and Music The spring is always a busy season for the Music Department. In addition to gearing up for the two spring concerts (Bands April 24 th, Jazz and Choral May 3 rd ), students have been out in the community and preparing a whole slate of special performances: The NHS Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble traveled to the Vinal School in mid-march to perform their annual Young People s Concert this year s program focused on music from America s past and was received very warmly by the Vinal students and faculty. Thanks to Mrs. Nugent, Ms. Medairos and the entire Vinal community! The NHS Jazz Combo performed to very high compliments at the Norwell Women s Club s annual spring fundraiser. Liz Allen (trumpet), Dillon Bailey (bass), Patrick Birmingham (piano), AJ Ciardi (drums), James DiGregorio (guitar), Steven McClelland (sax) and Frank White (sax) put on a wonderful show to support a great organization! Over a dozen NHS Music students are busy putting together the pit orchestra for the Fourth Wall Players spring musical, Legally Blonde. Most schools in the area hire in professionals to perform in their pit orchestras, which underscores the high level of difficulty of this sort of undertaking. Congratulations and many thanks to all of the students who have stepped up to the plate! Question of the month STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS Page 2 VISIT ROME A limited number of places on the Norwell High School trip to Italy over April vacation 2013 are still available. Students should be enrolled in Latin III or higher for the 2012-2013 school year. Anyone interested in participating should see Mr. Whelton for information and sign-up procedures. How many countries have Norwell High School students visited? GREEN DAY Kevin Dyko and Matt Cochranehelp Save the Environment at Norwell High School SOPHOMORE CLASS BY Katie Maguire The month of March has been a successful month for the Sophomore class. During the middle of March, was our badminton tournament. Many teams battled it out to take place in our finals. The winners were Mary O Connell and ISabella Abelite for the girls and Sam Rinko and WIllie McDonald for the boys. We raised almost $200 which is a tremendous amount. Thanks to everyone who took part. Coming up soon is going to be our new fundraiser, Norwell s Best Dance Crew. Students can perform with groups or solo to win the competition. It is going to be a lot of fun! Keep an eye out for auditions. Wishing everyone luck with the end of third term!

Page 3 STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS THEATRE The Fourth Wall Players and the NHS Music Department are delighted to bring you Legally Blonde The Musical on the 7th, 8th and 9th of June. Freshman Jane Gogarty has been cast in the principal role of the iconic Elle Woods. Her fellow freshman Elisa Rastelli is choreographing the show. The cast is working hard under the tutelage of Elisa and Choral Director Taryn Sallee to get the dance routines and songs whipped into shape, and the pit band is rehearsing under John O'Briant's expert guidance. 4WP alumna Sam Noble came by the other day to inspire our cast with some intriguing relaxation exercises. Senior Colleen Fitzgibbons is playing the role of Paulette, a wonderfully funny character who was played in the movie of the same name by Norwell luminary Jennifer Coolidge. We are hoping that Jennifer might be able to join us at some stage, either during rehearsals or at showtime. At the end of our final show we will induct the self-styled Dramagurlz - Aria Benzaquin, MaryKate Hines, Abby Flynn, Chandler Anthony, Molly Broderick and Vyvy Larason - into the 4WP Hall of Fame. Between them the gurlz have graced our stage with many, many fine performances. Legally Blonde is shaping up to be a great entertainment for our audiences. We hope you are among them. Tickets will be $12 adults, $5 seniors and students. Colleen Fitzgibbons is also hard at work directing her production of This by Melissa James Gibson. You can look forward to a wise and witty look at the nature of relationships. Show dates are May 22nd, 23rd and 24th. Tickets will be $10 adults, $5 seniors and students. Best wishes Chris Lacy ARTS FEST The annual Fine Arts Festival will be taking place in the NHS gymnasium on Thursday April 26th at 6:30. Sample works from the elementary and middle schools will be exhibited. The show features over 400 works from all high school level students who are enrolled in the Art and Photography Programs. Refreshments will be served compliments of the PTO. An Awards Ceremony for NHS art students will take place at the conclusion of the evening.
