4-H Judging Schools (Family & Consumer Science, Visual Arts, Photography and Horticulture) Due to the changes that have been made in the 4-H Judging Schools, the dates will be in a future Newshound. Within the first two schools, a 1st and 2nd year member may come to an orientation at 4:00 pm or 5:00 pm, otherwise other members who are aware of the judging procedure may judge any time after 4:00 pm and before 6:00 pm. Judging takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Two additional schools will be held in the summer. At those events, members may judge any time between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Members should plan to attend accordingly, as judging classes will not be re-displayed at a later date. Please note, the location will be at the Brown County 4-H Office. First and Second year judging members may receive help from an experienced judge during the first and second school, but will be expected to do their own work after that. In case of inclement weather and a school needs to be cancelled, classes will be rescheduled in June. Cancellations will be aired on the following radio stations: KKAA, KGIM and KSDN. 89th Little International Exposition The 2013 Little I will be held on March 22-23, 2013 at SDSU in Brookings. If your club would like to attend the exposition, take a tour of the campus or participate in the livestock judging contest, check out the Little I website. There, you will find more information, registration forms, schedule, listing of staff and the results at the conclusion of the event.

Fruit Sale Forms Due By Kathy Sperry Totaled 4-H fruit sale order forms and money needs to be turned in to your club leader by your club s due date. Hopefully, every 4-H family has ordered at least one box of fruit for your own use and met the county goal of selling five boxes of fruit or $100.00 worth of products for every member. With the price being comparable to local grocery store prices and the excellent quality, 4-H fruit is a great buy! Just a few reminders for all 4-H ers: The yellow master club order form, which the leader completes, is due to the 4-H office before 12:00 noon, Monday, March 4, 2013. The fruit will be delivered to Aberdeen on Tuesday, March 19, 2013. Each club is asked to have 2 volunteers arrive on March 19th at the 4-H office garage at 10:00 am. A third volunteer is needed to arrive at 1:00 pm. The other club representatives he/she recruits (one person for every 20 boxes club sold) should be at the 4-H office garage by 3:15 pm on March 19th. No vehicles will park on the east side of the 4-H garage due to safety concerns. Vehicles will be allowed to pull in and load-out their club s order when it is ready to leave. This will reduce congestion and speed up the load-out process. Vehicles may park along the street and on the west side of the 4-H office. Please bring dollies to make load-out easier. As soon as the fruit is sorted and counts verified, the club will pay with one check for the club s order and then the fruit may be loaded out. All fruit should be delivered to the customers as soon as possible and no later than Thursday, March 21, 2013. As you deliver the fruit, ask the customer to inspect it so you can know they are happy with the quality. Any concerns about unsatisfactory fruit should be reported to the 4-H office by 3:00 pm on Friday, March 22nd. Be sure to be friendly and thank the customers for purchasing fruit and supporting 4-H. Thank you for all of your help with this super fundraiser! Camp Counselors We are looking for energetic, fun and responsible members who are 14 years of age or older to be positive role models at 4-H Camp. If you would like to have a memorable summer and are interested in becoming a camp counselor, the applications are available at the 4-H office. They are due back at the office by Friday, April 12, 2013.

4-H Camp Brown County s 4-H Camp dates are June 10-12 and 13-15, 2013. Enclosed with the main leader packet are the 4-H Camp Registration Guidelines. You can begin signing up for camp on March 25, 2013 and no sooner. The deadline for camp sign-up is April 23, 2013. Camp cost is $50.00. The Brown County 4-H Leader s Association will pay $5.00 per camper from fruit sale earnings, so you will only need to write a check for $45.00 payable to the 4-H Leader s Association. Either parents or leaders can sign 4-H ers up for camp. Camp T-shirts can be purchased when you register for a cost of $8.00 and will be given to you at camp. If 4-H members don t fill the camp sessions by April 23, 2013, enrollment will be opened up for non-4-h children. The camp fee for non members will be $51.50, which includes the camp fee plus insurance, and $8.00 if a T-shirt is purchased. They will also be required to fill out all of the forms. Brown County Dog Project By Debi Munger The Brown County 4-H Dog CGC and Rally practice will begin March 10, 2013 from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm for beginners and from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm for advanced at the Warner Community Center. Dogs should wear well-fitting buckle or slip collars (choker or nylon) and be on a 6 foot leash. Treats are encouraged during training and handlers may reward their dogs with praise, smiles, hugs and pats. Please contact me at 605-380-6014 or email: debi@eaglepassranch.com with any questions. Livestock Verification Affidavit Forms To ensure ownership of animals, each 4-H member and their family must complete a form to verify which animals they will be caring for and exhibiting. All market animals will be required to have a green SD 4-H ear tag for identification and DNA collected. Market beef animals weighed and tagged at the January market beef weigh-in are identified. 4-H members owning these animals will need to complete the Market Beef Verification Affidavit, which can be picked up at the 4-H office. March 15, 2013 is the deadline to have the completed Market Beef Verification Affidavit form on file in the 4-H office. Market sheep, market swine and meat goat will need to be ear tagged for identification and have a Verification Affidavit on file at the 4-H office by May 24, 2013. DNA will need to be collected. Breeding animals do not require ear tags but must have a Verification Affidavit on file at the 4-H office by May 24, 2013. All market animals must have DNA collected, be weighed, tagged and ownership affidavit on file to be eligible to show at the South Dakota State Fair.

4-H Livestock Ear Tag Policy 1. Ear tags are $1.50 each. Please make your check payable to: 4-H Leader s Association. 2. Have your animal tagged. Limited supplies of tagging pliers are available at the 4-H office if you need one. However, the pliers can only be checked out for a short period of time. 3. 4-H livestock ear tags are required for market animal identification only. Breeding livestock should already have some type of permanent identification: registration tattoo, Bangs tag or tattoo. 4. Take note: even though your animal has an ear tag if they have not been weighed in they are not eligible for State Fair Competition (even if it receives a purple ribbon at the County Fair). 5. Deadline for ownership and having an Ownership Affidavit Form completed and on file at the 4-H office is as follows: A. March 15, 2013 for market beef. B. May 24, 2013 for breeding beef/swine/sheep/dairy/goats 6. Ownership Affidavits are available at the 4-H office. Market Sheep, Market Swine and Meat Goat Weigh-In Market sheep, market swine and meat goat weigh-in day will be Friday, May 17, 2013 from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm, at the beef barn wash rack area at the fairgrounds. If it rains, we will weigh-in in the Expo Building. This weigh-in and identification of your animal is the first step to qualifying for rate-of-gain contests and eligibility to show at the State Fair. There will be a $1.50 per ear tag charge and $6.00 per head for DNA. Helping hands will be needed, so plan on helping when you come.
