IOWA HAWKEYE HORSESHOE PITCHERS ASSOCIATION FOR CURRENT TOURNAMENT INFORMATION, NATSTATS, AND TOURNAMENT RESULTS, VISIT US ON THE WEB AT HTTPS://WWW.IHHPA.COM MAY/JUNE 2018 TWO LOSSES FOR IHHPA Terrence J. "Terry" Shea, age 93, of Council Bluffs, passed away on April 7, 2018. He proudly served his country in the Merchant Marines during WWII (1943-1946). He owned and operated Shea Painting and Decorating for 30+ years, retiring in 1985. He is survived by 9 children, 28 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, 2 sisters, and many nieces and nephews. He was a long time member of IHHPA. He played in the Championship classes at the Iowa State Fair in the late 70s and 80s and won a Class A championship there in the early 2000s. He mostly threw a 1-1/4 turn shoe. When that was not working for him, he was one of the few who could switch to a 1 ¾ mid-game. Steve Bones Ronk reports enjoying helping Terry celebrate his proud Irish heritage each St. Patrick s Day. Over the past 15 years, repeatedly hearing the same Irish jokes never got too old. Terry was also known for his great singing voice at church or karaoke. He will be missed on the courts. Jan W. Flemming age 72, of Avoca, Iowa passed away on April 9, 2018. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Lois, son Brian and wife Melissa, daughter Sue, and grandchildren. He joined the Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitching Association (IHHPA) in 1971 and received his 40 year membership patch earlier this year. Jan, along with friends Jim Hackett, Ray Daugherty and Darrell Nation started the Southwest Iowa Horseshoe Pitching Association (SWIHPA) in 1979. They originally bought steel stakes and hauled them around to several small towns in southwest Iowa on Sundays or during the town celebration. Here, wherever they could find an empty lot, they would drive the stakes into the ground and have a horseshoe tournament. In 1982, they partnered with the city of Hancock, Iowa, where they were allowed to install 18 fenced in permanent clay courts in Botna Bend Park. They held a tournament there once a month. In 1986 they installed 18 clay courts in Sunset Park in Council Bluffs. Continued on Page 6 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello from your IHHPA president, Summer has finally come and I am afraid it is here to stay. Don t forget the sunscreen, water, and shade in the form of a tree, an umbrella, and/or a tent. I am glad that the tournaments have been going well. I would like to wish good luck to all of the world tournament pitchers, especially the state of Iowa pitchers. Those pitchers are: Junior Class, Derek Bloodgood; Cadet Class, Malcolm Clark; Open Men Class, James Albright Jr., Mike Albright; Women Class, Kristy Klejch; Elders Class, Bert Logsden, Skip Hill, and Marvin Dirks! The Iowa State Fair is about a month away. Hope everybody has practiced up! Don t forget to sign up for the Iowa State Fair! There are many tournaments before The Iowa State Fair, but don t forget about the one that your president holds in Ames, IA on the Saturday right before The State Fair. The summer leagues are going very well! Again I would like to say good luck to everybody at the NHPA World Tournament. -- Kenny Wiese, IHHPA President

MAY/JUNE 2018 ROYAL, IOWA HORSESHOE COURTS: The courts at the city park will have a grand opening on July 21 (Saturday) after 10am. New full distance walkways, backboards and clay have been installed. 6 new courts were completed in June. There will be a doubles tournament at 11 am. This is a NS doubles tournament. The club hopes to have a league and hold sanctioned tournaments in the future. I invite IHHPA members to Royal. I plan to attend. The park is on the north side of Royal. Vern Kollasch, Iowa Director PROUD GRANDPA PAT SIMON reports his 9 year old grandson Kyle Kuecker, (youngest member of the sanctioned Waterloo Metro Horseshoe Pitching League) had a tremendous night a couple weeks ago. He had three tremendous scratch games totaling 102 points for the night, (the first time he has totaled more than 100 points scratch). He was nearly 40 points over his average for the night. He pitched a high game of 14% which will earn him his next NHPA percent game patch of 10%. But the big news of the night was he pitched his first ever and sanctioned double ringer. Out of the11 players in the league Kyle is currently in 4th place and not that many games out of first! As for Pat, he is still having trouble with his left leg and unable to pitch. Doctor, chiropractor and physical therapist are all working to figure this out. Three kidney surgeries removed all his stones which helped his pain level. However he is unable to put much weight on his left leg so pitching is out. He is slowly improving and can now walk a mile. Some feeling is returning to his left shin. He misses seeing and competing with all his friends and will return to the court ASAP. MEMBER NEWS MARV ENGSTLER: After his successful heart valve surgery last May, Marv developed a lung infection and was rehospitalized in Rochester. He had a nasogastric feeding tube placed for swallowing difficulties that has now been replaced by a G-tube which is much more comfortable. He can have nothing by mouth. He is currently in speech therapy. His plan of getting back to horseshoes and other activities have been delayed, but he was out pitching some shoes just recently. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He may show up at a horseshoe event to say hi at some point. You can e-mail him in care of his daughter, Mary Hanna, at dhanna@wctatel.net or send Marvin a note at 2615 Hwy 69, Garner, IA 50438. She reports that Marv really enjoys hearing from his horseshoe family. HEARD ON THE STREET: 10 pitchers (2 teams) from Iowa went to Team World in May. Rumor was that Bert Logsdon did well and everyone else had fun! When asked, Bert said at 1 st while I was pitching 69%+, I was pretty much having fun too. Later after dropping scores down some, it wasn t as much fun. (He ended with a 65% average so he must have not dropped too much!) KYLE S FIRST DOUBLE 5

MEMBER NEWS CONTINUED STAN HANSON has been in the hospital since April for cancer of the brain stem. His daughter says no visitors currently. He has a lot of complications. Cards can be sent to him at home address and she will take them to him. 1755 Waters Edge Dr., Pleasant Hill, IA 50327 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS It is time to solicit nominations for our Association s Hall of Fame and Frank Jackson Awards. Deadline for nominations is July 31, 2018. Hall of Fame Award: The purpose of the Hall of Fame Award is to honor and perpetuate the names of those members who have displayed outstanding ability in the game of horseshoes and/or who have contributed through meritorious service to the general welfare and progress of the game and/or who have pitched horseshoes for a great number of years. Hall of Fame and Frank Jackson Awards are elected by the Hall of Fame Board which consists of the Executive Board of IHHPA, Regional Chairpersons, and a Nomination Committee appointed by the IHHPA President. The nominations for the Awards are from you, the Membership, by submitting a brief description of accomplishments and reasons you feel your candidate deserves the recognition. If you know individuals that fit the criteria for either of the above awards, please send information to me. Include in your nomination their name, how long they have been actively involved with horseshoes, their specific accomplishments and things you feel that make these horseshoe pitchers special.
