THE ROSETTE Newsletter of the Tennessee Society Order of Confederate Rose December 2011 Dear OCR Family, I would like to apologize for the newsletter being late. My family has gone through some stressful situations lately. My husband has congestive heart failure and is recovering from having walking pneumonia for three weeks. I have had some minor health problems. I am not trying to make excuses but let you know that my absence was not without a reason. There is an old adage that states what doesn t kill you, makes you stronger so I am getting pretty tough. Next year is an election year for our organization. I would like to encourage some enterprising ladies to consider running for any of the elected offices. If you are interested in running for an office, you can announce it in our next newsletter. This would give them information about you and help everyone decide how to vote. I talked to Sandy Sewell about the Columbia Tour of Homes and no one had contacted her. It is usually the first weekend of December. I called the Chamber of Commerce and the Tourism Bureau and learned from both of them that there would NOT be a tour of homes this year. I am not sure if it is due to the economy or because no one has stepped up to take leadership but time is starting to run out. I always look forward to that weekend because it helps me get in the Christmas spirit but Tammy Hatcher has a beautiful Confederate Ball the same weekend. If you haven t attended it, you are truly missing out on a well organized, beautiful ball. It looks like 2012 is going to be our most exciting and challenging year yet. We are helping the Blue-Gray Alliance host the tea for 150 th anniversary of the battle of Shiloh on Saturday March 25, 2012. I have not been given all the final details but we have been asked by Lisa Hamby of Cleburne s Div. to help. All of our ladies pulled together for the 145 th anniversary tea and we had so much fun. There will probably be close to 100 to 150 ladies to attend this year so we will need a lot of help. Our 2012 Tennessee state meeting is in Dover on April 20-22. The Blanche Louise Lewis Chapter #16 has graciously agreed to host our state convention since we don t have a chapter in Dover. Please make plans to help Hazel and her ladies with items for the ditty bags and door prizes. Also, our state has the honor and privilege of hosting the National Convention in Murfreesboro on July 11 14, 2012. This event takes a lot of time and preparation so I will be calling on some of you to help. I would like to make this National Convention as outstanding as the one Tennessee hosted in 2004 by Mrs. Ruby Pruitt, the past state president. Ruby Pruett and Helen Holladay donned period attire for manning the registration table during the Friday evening executive committee meeting at the 2011 TNSOCR Reunion in Cookeville. Our chapter donated items for the silent auction as well as door prizes. Thanks to the Highland Roses for a great job in hosting the event. Joe and Ruby Pruett, Jerry and I enjoyed attending the Gen. Dibrell s SCV Camp Spring Potluck Supper and presentation by Jerry Raymer on May 14 th. Members from several chapters at Sparta s bean supper Jerry and I with SCV Mech Cav A mechanical failure prevented SCVMC members from NC from having supper and staying the night with us on June 7. Enroute to Paducah, KY for the Annual Ride, Capt. Kevin Stone s bike started spewing oil when the group stopped to stretch before embarking upon the last leg of the journey to our place. We drove to the Beanpot and had a nice 45-minute visit before the tow truck arrived to haul the bike to the nearest Harley Davidson repair shop in Cookeville. Members of several chapters were present at the Spring Potluck Supper in Sparta Deepest sympathy is extended to ROC #1 members Marty Drake and Ruby Pruett. Marty s husband Paul, an avid supporter of OCR, passed away on June 27 th and Marty has since had the misfortune of breaking a foot. Ruby s brother passed away on August 4 th following an extended illness. Please keep these ladies in your thoughts and prayers. Southern regards, Carolyn Hedgecoth, President 1
Mariam Beck Forrest Chapter #5 Gleason, Tennessee Elaine Neill, Riley and I attended the Sacramento reenactment on May 21. As before, this little town turned out and had a very well planned, gracious tea. It is amazing what such a small group of people can accomplish. It was pretty weather and there was a great attendance from the reenactors. Everything was perfect. June 17 and 18 found Riley and me at the Forrest Homecoming. The big thrill for me this year was sleeping in the boyhood home. What a great honor! These are some of the OCR Young Rebels and Rosebud playing at shooting yanks during the day at NBF Boyhood Home! The lovely Tea at Farmington Sept. 16 17 found us in Farmington, MS. Margie Potts, Hazel Estes and Brenda Crossno absolutely showed out decorating the area where they held the tea. These ladies brought china dishes and cups, real silver ware and beautiful glasses. The tables were exquisitely decorated. They turned the room into beautiful banquet hall. The food was wonderful. I want to thank all of you for helping with the tea. I have heard nothing but glowing reports from everyone that attended. Roses at the memorial service in Farmington 2
Germantown, TN Mary Custis Lee Chapter #7 OCR Sponsored by the Robert E. Lee SCV Camp Our chapter along with Bankhead s battery and the Parkers Crossroads Battlefield Association host a Christmas party every year. It s always the second Saturday in December. We have it at a mansion in Bolivar, TN called the Columns. We use only 1862 decorations and usually have a pot luck dinner, music & 1860 s games. All of you are welcome to come join us on Dec. 11, 2011. We attended the inauguration in Montgomery, Alabama in February. It was a great honor to have been there for that. In April we were invited, along with White s Battery, to Charleston, South Carolina to fire the first shots on Fort Sumter with Todd Kiscadens beautiful 24 pound bronze cannon. We re very excited about the next four years. This 2011 national convention was attended by 6 members of the Tenn. Society. Every year this is a delightful coming together Of Roses from all parts of Dixie and the Ala. ladies were true Southern belles and made us all feel welcome. At the meeting, Mike Mitchell, rep. for Fla. Unveiled the cast marker, with the new logo that will be available thru each state s OCR. Plans are underway for next year s National to be held in Murfreesboro, Pres. Jan Hensley invited and encouraged everyone attend. Some of the Tenn. delegation toured The First White House of the Confederacy, Old Town Alabama, the state capitol and stood where Jefferson Davis took the Oath of Office, and the Alabama Confederate Memorial Park, which was the old Confederate Veterans Home. 3 of the ladies: Pat, Barbara, and Margie attended the SCV Grand Ball. Aunt Polly Eaton Williams Chapter #10 Gainesboro, TN sponsored by the Gainesboro Invincibles SCV Camp Aunt Polly gained 4 members this year so far! Teresa Carr Penticuff, Linda Taylor, Lisa Swann, and our first LIFE member Shirley Newberry!! We are so proud to welcome these new members! As another season comes to a close we can look back on a very exciting spring and summer. We seem to stay busy! April began with a memorial service near Cookeville, and in the months that followed another in Overton County and finally in Macon County. So we have traveled around abit to honor our brave veterans. The state convention in Cookeville was attended by 3 of our members: Scarlett, Betty, and I. We want to thank Pat Butler and the Highland Roses for a wonderful time. Wow I had no idea Pat is such an outstanding poet!! May found some of us camped in Gainesboro for the Poke Sallet festival. We set up our tents and cooked over the fire Mike Williams treated us to bear and venison. We do enjoy Southern friends. Martin Frost from Lebanon and several Overton County boys came out for the fun. Mark gave a rousing secession speech as Col Stanton, the boys enlisted, and raised the 1 st National over the Jackson County Courthouse once again. Mike & Amy had their root beer sutlery going at the Granville Festival so Mark Hudson and I hung out with Mike and Ed J. from Cookeville at their recruitment table. Violet & I, as well as several soldiers, were in the church reenactment. Cassie and I camped with Jan and her grandson at the NBF Boyhood Home, it was a great day till the monsoon started! Members also attended battle of Resaca, Ga. and a potluck with the Sparta camp to hear Jerry Raymer speak. Several of our members attended the M-Z picnic at the Sullivan home and Highland Brigade picnic at Mike Williams home, Sparta member Robert won the shooting match but Mark Hudson got the John Wilkes Booth award! Finally Jan, Betty, and I met up with Margie Potts in Montgomery to share a room for the national convention. We toured Old Alabama Town, the Confederate White House, stood where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office and visited the Ala. Confederate Soldiers Home. Looking forward to another busy fall at the battlefields and memorials! Tennessee State OCR Convention 30 April 2011 - Cookeville, Tennessee Hosted by Pat Butler and the Highland Roses #15 Another great meeting! TN Pres. Jan Hensley chartered the newest chapter, Sally Louisa Tompkins Chapter, Columbia, TN. Pat Butler is a gifted poetess who read 2 beautiful poems she wrote. A terrific program presented by Candace Biggs on shortages and life during the War. Good food, fellowship, and prizes! After lunch we participated with the SCV in the Confederate memorial service at the Cookeville Cemetery. Our thanks to all who attended. (PS- Next year it s in Dover.)
