From the Board Room Now the election for the Board has come & gone I would like to congratulate those who have been elected & who will hold office for the next 2 years. Welcome to Ray Breen a new member & two former members Trevor King & Bruce Morrow. I would also like to thank Vic Lewis for his assistance on the Board & for making a great success of our Open Pairs Competition. Also Ray Phipps who had to resign from the Board due to ill health, we wish him all the best. Boards are made up of different individuals all hoping to work for the benefit of the Club instead of those who seek self gratification. We now, as a Board, have to look forward to working together for the benefit of the Club & it s members over the next two years. We have over the past 12 months achieved a great deal with the major achievement being the settling of the court case which was brought against us by R.C.A.S. I have spent many hours travelling to Brisbane for the Court Hearings & briefings from our legal representatives. I know in one month I went to Brisbane eight times, spent many hours on the phone & on line hook-ups. Although we were awarded costs we are yet to receive any money, which is a substantial amount. All this takes time. However, we are reasonably confident. I would like to pay tribute to Greg Barrack & Phil Kelly for the many long hours they put in in preparation for our case to go to Court & I thank them both. Inside Bowls Reports... Women s Men s Mixed Christmas Raffles The past Board also apart from the court case, were also successful in selling the land to clear our debt. The land was sold to Consolidated Properties for housing & development & when this is approved by the Council members of the Club will have first option to purchase a building block. It is also pleasing to report over the last three months our profit has exceeded $150,000 which again is a fantastic result. Over the coming months you will notice some changes to the Club. On this agenda when funds become available a new bus will be purchased & the front entrance steps to the Club will be renovated. A permanent cover at the southern end of the Club will be erected where the bowlers can have functions & BBQ s etc. The painting & the general upgrade & maintenance of the Club including removal of asbestos is in progress. Bowl Over Ham Raffles Congratulations to the Women s President Janny Scher who has been elected to that position & also to Vice President Maisie Lincoln & the rest of the ladies committee. At this stage the Men s Bowling Club have not had their elections but we wish all the candidates the best. I would also like to thank all the staff for their dedication towards providing first class service to our members & visitors. In closing I would like to ask all members of the Club to support the current Board & work towards the benefit of the future of the Club. The Board looks forward to having a good working relationship with our General Manager Phill Kelly & the management & staff as the Boards have done so in the past. For & on behalf of the Board R. A. Women s Bowls Report In spite of blustery conditions, the Hibiscus Gala Day Triples played Wednesday, September 10, was a great success with 28 teams taking part. The Overall winners for the day was Cudgen Leagues team of Faye Turner, Liz Fleming & June Wotherspoon with runners up Nancy Gleeson, George Moore & Marie Commerford from Pottsville. Third place went to a Kingscliff team made up of Jeanne Maass, Nancy Sherlock & Avis Shipway. The format for the day was such that the first of the two games divided the field into winners & losers. Winners in the losers section were Cudgen Leagues team Marie Ellen, Helen Wylie & Jan Flaherty with Joan Griffiths, Maisie Lincoln & Marg Atkinson from Kingscliff runners up. We were pleased to have Meredith Dennis, President of Tweed Palliative Support Inc. join our social bowlers for afternoon tea Wednesday, August 27. President Diana welcomed the opportunity to present the proceeds of July s very successful Charity Day sale to Tweed Palliative Support with the request that the money go towards Wedgetail Retreat. Tweed Palliative Support is a not-for-profit organization. Wedgetail Retreat is a modern purpose-built hospice run by Tweed Palliative Support. In competitions completed over the last few weeks, Sandra Akers won Consistency over runner up Elaine Downes. Major/ Minor Pairs winners were Raewyn Liddington & Laurel Willoughby with runners up Val Abery & Janny Scher. Dorothy Greenwell, Di Jones & Pauline Freeman won the Club Selected Triples over Ann Graham, Jane Bonett & Janny Scher. Jenny White defeated Jan Curtis to win the Novice Singles. Congratulations to all.. A two-bowl triples tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, November 26. It will consist of three games of fifteen ends with total prize money of $930. Entry forms are available at the club. Entry fee includes green fees, morning tea & lunch. Marg Atkinson Publicity Officer Men s Bowls Report It has been an exciting & fulfilling year for the Men s Club. Michael Turner & Ian Taylor getting through to the semi-finals of the District Pairs & singles, 1st division & 5th division making the State finals in Pennants. Well done. The Men s Novice is yet to be played- that competition is for bowlers with 30 months or less experience in bowling. Being the last report for 2013-2014 I take the opportunity of thanking our Men s Club Committee for their diligent dedication to their respective tasks. I also would congratulate the Greenkeepers for the best greens in years. The interaction between the Board, the Secretary Manager & his staff, & the Men s Club has been tremendous. Thank you everyone for a great year. John Julius President

Men s Bowls Report cont... The Major/Minor Final was played on September 21 with Skipper Damon Crompton & Lead Lawrence Downes winning this event. On October 9 the Reserve Triples were played. Skip Harry Hockey, 2nd Mick Mesic & Lead Paul Gentle were the winners of this event. The Finals of both the President s Singles & Mixed Pairs were completed on the weekend of November 1 & 2 with Damon Crompton winning the Singles & Sandra Akers & Ian Taylor winning the Pairs. The Rookies Singles & Mixed 4 s will be played on the weekend of November 8 & 9 which will complete the Club Championships for 2014. Peter Murphy s team was successful in winning the TBDBA Champion of Champions 4 s. Two teams played for the SCHIPP SHIELD & were unsuccessful in this event, however the two teams that played for the SCHIPP CUP were successful in bringing the Cup home to Kingscliff. Dates to remember: Sunday, November 9: TBDBA Charity Day Sunday, November 16: Men s Bowls Club AGM Saturday, December 6: Men s Christmas Party Sunday, December 7: Member s Presentation Night Barrie Butler Games Controller Mixed Bowls Report As this will be the last newsletter for the year I would like to thank the Mixed Bowls Committee members for the time & effort each one has contributed during 2014. Thank you Barbara, Maisie, Elsie, Aileen, Wyn & Catherine. Without each & every one of you Mixed Bowls would not operate. I must also mention that after many years on the committee Margaret McCrindle resigned due to failing health. Margaret has now moved back to Adelaide to be near her family. Sadly it has become necessary to call off the Open Pairs on Sunday afternoons. When all the winter visitors made their way home it became obvious that we did not have a large enough pool of local bowlers able to play each week to make the Pairs viable. Once we have the influx of visitors again next year then we will look at restarting the Pairs. A big thanks to all the bowlers who attended each week. The social triples are still on each Sunday afternoon at 1.00pm. There will be 3 visits in during November: Tuesday, November 11: 48 bowlers from Bundy Rumblers Touring Bowlers 1.00pm Sunday, November 16: 45 bowlers from Brothers Social Bowls Club Ipswich 1.00pm Sunday, November 23: 50 bowlers from Bowls Past Presidents Caboolture branch 12.30pm These are the last visits in for 2014. A big thank you to all the bowlers who regularly attend visits in. It is important that we match the number of visiting bowlers. We receive a lot of return visits because in the past we have always been able to match their numbers. During the past few months it has become very noticeable that we are having trouble matching the numbers. To encourage more bowlers to attend these days we have now reduced mat fees to just $3 per person on Visit In days only. Visit in s are a good source of income for the club, so please come along to these days & join in the fun. Raewyn Liddington Secretary
