By LINDSAY MAKICHUK The Hosting Committee has the responsibility of providing services and resources for the athletes, fans, sponsors, and you, the volunteers. Dave Moore is the Vice Chair of the Hosting Committee. Dave has been involved with curling for many years. He has been a member at several clubs in the Edmonton area, organizing bonspiels and serving on boards. Dave brings his knowledge and experience to this committee as they plan to welcome and entertain volunteers, athletes and sponsors. The Hosting Committee is divided into four areas: Information Services and Decorations, Medical Services, Team Services and Transportation, and Lounges. Dave Moore Vice Chair of Hosting The Information Services and Decorations Committee are the go-to people of the Tim Hortons Brier. These folks are in charge of the information booths at Rexall Place, The Westin, and The Edmonton Expo Centre. It is up to them to distribute the Tankard Times, (our daily newspaper), each day. They will greet fans and answer questions. This committee will also be responsible for decorating the lounges, Arena, Original 16 Patch and the Purple Heart Lounge. Director Jim Weber is the man with the plan. The Medical Services Committee is comprised of volunteer medical professionals. This committee leads the way in professional health care for the Tim Hortons Brier athletes. The services range from physiotherapy to massage to first aid. Jim Hammond is the Director of Medical Services. Having a background teaching First Aid courses and working at St. John s Ambulance, Jim brings his knowledge and experience to lead this group. Team Services and Transportation is the group of fearless volunteers that will brave the wintery Edmonton roads and transport the athletes safely where they need to be. This committee will work as a well-oiled machine, as dispatchers, drivers, and marshals will work together to coordinate incoming requests and driver s routes. This March, when you see Tim Hortons Brier decorated Ford vehicles around our city, give a wave to our Team Service and Transportation team! Wade Teveniuk is the Director in charge of this committee. The final Hospitality group is the Lounges Committee. Under the leadership of Director Jason West, these volunteers are the ones running the various lounges. The various lounges including: the Sponsor Lounge, the Players Lounge, Volunteer Lounge and a Media Lounge. So during the Tim Hortons Brier, when you re taking a quick quiet break from your shift, thank your fellow volunteers from the Lounges Committee for providing that sanctuary stocked full of Tim Hortons, Coca-Cola and Save-On-Foods goodies! 4

Ken has been curling since he was 12 years old. The two-sheet natural ice curling rink in Pilger, Saskatchewan was the winter focal point in the small prairie town that didn t even have an indoor hockey rink. Most of his curling was in Airdrie, and then Calgary, where he curled at the Calgary Curling Club. Ken s curling took a back seat to Communication Studies when he moved to Vancouver in 1989 to attend Simon Fraser University. Later, Ken moved to Edmonton to head a silviculture site preparation division and started a landscaping design company. In 2003, Ken opened up Zocalo, a floral, garden and gift gallery in Edmonton s Little Italy with his partner Miranda. He was finally able to take up curling again in 2002 when he taught Miranda how to curl and they later joined a mixed league at the Avonair Curling Club. Ken got to know Mark Johnson last year when they started up the Anything Goes Friday night curling league. In charge of Decorations for the Brier, Ken and the team of designers at Zocalo are happy to be part of the Brier team and lend their ideas and expertise.
