Recreation and RSC Divisions Monthly Report May, 2018 Recreation Sports: o Currently in season: spring soccer, t-ball and coach pitch. o Registration is full for summer t-ball and coach pitch. Camp/Preschool: o Camp training was held the week of May 21-25. This year s camp staff learned CPR and First Aid techniques and received AED training. They learned important leadership skills including interpersonal, communication, training, task and time management skills. o Two staff members attended a training by Temple Grandin, the world s most famous person in the autism world. o Thirty-five participants attended the day trip to Fairmount Race Track on May 1. Fitness/Aquatics o The American Bone Health Organization presented a free lecture on bone fracture prevention on May 16. Those in attendance learned about the serious risks of osteoporosis as well as how different medical conditions, medication and family history can affect your risk for fractures. Renaud Spirt Center: o RSC filmed the first segment of Recreation Information Live! This Facebook Live video is intended to inform our social media followers of upcoming events and programs and to highlight its members and employees. The first video was viewed at least 210 times. While initial
numbers are low, we hope that the videos will catch on and generate more interest and attendance at the facility. o RSC hosted one lock-in, one pool rental and ten multi-purpose rentals. Staff received several compliments on the condition of the park. Kudos to Eric Duffner, Darrin Nadler and Rick Sammelmann for a job well done.
o Heritage and Freedom Fest July 2 through July 4 Updated internal software system to process vendor applications. Created a master vendor list. Obtained a traffic permit from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). Continued to receive updated certificates of insurance from all vendors and sponsors. Secured parking arrangements at Christian High School. Finalized generator agreement. Researched hotel rates. Sought VIP tent volunteers. Ordered shirts for volunteers. Developed a logistics plan for load-in day. Parade: Processed parade applications. Extended application deadline to attract more participants. o Added concrete steps to the ¼ pipe at the skate park. o The Water and Sewer Department repaired a broken water hydrant on May 15 which restored our ability to water the athletic fields. Last December, crews removed the old safety tile and replaced it with new safety tile. o The swing set from the old upper playground was moved to the lower playground. Crews created a new area for the swings with safety surface near the Bandstand pavilion. Sod was also added to the area.
o Sealed the red-stamped brick outside the restrooms. o All hands were on deck to help move equipment in to Alligator s Creek Aquatic Center prior to its opening on May 26. Landscape: o Landscaped new beds at Alligator s Creek Aquatic Center. o Jammin Concert Series Tuesdays, June through August Finalized task list. Fort Zumwalt Park o Added a block wall to the back of the new maintenance shed to help drainage and run off around the building. o Founder s Day and Garden Expo May 5 Parks Staff assisted with set-up and tear-down for the event. Approximately 1,000 people came out to enjoy the event. There were 146 tours of the Heald Home and Fort. The leather stamping activity and petting zoo were among the most popular exhibits. George Portz and his Bluegrass band provided great entertainment.
o On May 19, Fort Zumwalt Park was closed to the public for the annual Momentum Cycle Criterion Cup Bike Race. At this special event, over 150 cyclists from across the area race heats through Fort Zumwalt Park. o Celebration of Lights November 23 through December 30 Updated event guidelines were approved. Worked with groups to obtain sketches of scene designs for this year s display. Special Projects Completed the installation of safety tile at the playground in Civic Park. Completed the installation of the new swing set in Civic Park. Continued to work on the installation of a shade structure at the splash pad at Brendan s Playground. Added concrete steps to the quarter-pipe at the BMX Skate Plaza in Westhoff Park. Added a block wall to the backside of the new parks maintenance facility in Fort Zumwalt Park. Landscape Municipal Properties Volunteers helped to plant flowers and spruce up the Veteran s Walk on Saturday, May 5. Planted annual flowers grown at the greenhouse at CLIP sites in Legacy Point, Renaud Spirit Center, Civic Park and CarShield Field. Installed landscape beds, plants and drip irrigation at the Alligator s Creek Aquatic Center. Below is a photo of one of the finished beds that just needs a little time to grow! Plants chosen for the landscape are summer blooms that will
peak during swimming season to provide a better conceptual image, the color board is posted below. Left over petunias were added to enhance the display. Planted flowers at City Hall. This year s Arbor Day Ceremony was a culmination of effort and pushes O Fallon into its sixteenth year as a Tree City USA city. o Many thanks to Forest Park and Westhoff Elementary School Earth Clubs for sending out capable tree planters. Teachers Debbie Deson and Cheryl May did a great job organizing the labor force, Elizabeth Peoples created the event, Geoff Hinkle handled the heavy labor, and Mayor Hennessy offered his time and dignity to a fun morning!
o Landscape staff put forth their full attention to landscaping Alligator s Creek Aquatic Center at Civic Park. Tourism & Festivals o Food Truck Frenzy & Fan Fest April 27 CarShield Field There were four food trucks at the event; three sold out! Approximately 1,000 people came out to enjoy the event. Many patrons were drawn to the event for an opportunity to stand on the baseball field. Sponsorship and Marketing o Ran ads for Founder s Day in Community News and MidRivers Magazine on May 2. o Turned in ads for the Jammin Concert Series to Mid Rivers News and ads for Food Truck Frenzy to Community News. o Secured Chick-Fil-A as a sponsor. o Received a sponsorship check for $5,000 from Krey Distribution. o Received a sponsorship check for $3,625 from Bank of Franklin County. o Confirmed in-kind donations from the River City Rascals & Madison s Café.
