300 TO AM P ORIGINAL This afternoon, as Bruce Ferrall prepares for his 300th game of football with the A MP Society, players, past and present, club supporters and friends will come together at Oval 10 as- a sincere gesture of appreciation of 18 years' dedication by this club immortal Bruce, affectionately known as "Ferret", has played in most positions throughout his career It is fair to say he will never become a recognised ruckman, but equally it must be said that in his heyday as a rover he had no peer No other player in the history of this Club has been able' to clear the ball from the centre with the same consistency as "Ferret" and there have tieen- few to match his ability to absorb punishment Since ptaying in the Club's inaugural match in 1961, Bruce has amassed 300 out of a possible 316 He has played in 217 senior matches and 83 ; reserve games and along the way has collected 2 senior and 2 reserve Best and Fairest awards as well as 2 senior goalkicking trophies, 'and he is only Thirty-five! Editorial cont - Geelong moved into third, on percentage, by virtue of their twenty-one point win over fourth spot holder Alphington, whilst Kew again proved their "nuisance" value by toppling Old Ivanhoe and so keeping them a game behind the four fight Old Xaverians led Hampton Rovers comfortably all day to record a fortyfive point win and maintain touch with the four D Section is still fairly wide Erratic performances by several sides have meant that no-one is assured of a finals berth Last week all margins werelarge, the closest being Melbourne High's seven goal win over Heatherton and State Bank's forty-four point win over West Brunswick The other games saw Old Camberwell home by ninety-two points over Elsternwick ; St Kevin's by seventeen goals over University High and Power House by one hundred and six points over Country Colleges The E Section "surprise" was A M P Society's twenty point win over Beverley Hills, in a closely contested game up till three-quarter time St Bede's (section leader) and Bulleen-Templestowe (second) each scored comfortably - over AN Z Bank and Old Mentonians, respectively Old Geelong moved back into the four when they defeated North Brunswick by twenty-nine points La Trobe Blacks are only a game out of the four, but missed the chance to boost their percentage last week against Brunswick Thornbury's ninety-nine point win over National Bank sees them undisputed F Section leader, ahead of Bulleen United, who kept in touch when they accounted for Therry Commonwealth Bank are now third, having defeated Footscray last week, whilst University Reds came back strongly after their rest to defeat Monash Whites Junior One leader North Old Boys scored a run-away twenty goal victory over Old Scotch to retain their unbeaten record ` University Blues slipped into second after their win over the Blacks The Blues trailed by five points at threequarter time but kicked eight goals in the final term Monash University are now third and Ivanhoe fourth following wins over Geelong and Ormond respectively Hampton Rovers led St Bernard's comfortably all day to score by thirtynine points and thereby moved into sixth position In Junior Two, Old Haileyburians and De La Salle shared "sweep" honours over West Brunswick and Caulfield and remain at the top, a game and a half clear of "draw clubs" Coburg and Kcw De La were the more accurate, however, notching thirty-three goals to OH's thirty-two Old Paradians scored well over Therry after having led all day, and Fawkner moved up one spot after their victory over Melbourne High PREVIEWING TODAY'S GAMES At the half way point, the Tipsters' ladder s no less interesting than those of the Secions Syd Whitfield is finding "the unknowns of F Section" remarkably "true" He has averaged just over 3 winners (out of a possible 4) for each of the 9 rounds so far The Junior 2 draw last week enabled Peter Nathan to secure second position over D Section's Norm Nugent (by a slender 2 points) currently fourth place is held by Michael Arnold, but I am sure that Peter Brukner (seventh) will be hoping for a reversal of their positions now that they have swapped Sections For the remainder of the season Michael will be tussling with A Section, whilst Peter will attempt success in Junior 1 (Peter feels he has the better of the bargain at this stage - but only time will tell ) Jim Fidge and Brian Lauder, fifth and sixth respectively, have the job in front of them if they hope to overhaul the leaders ; whilst rumour has it that Nugget Stephens would prefer the "Tattsiotto Six" to the "Tipsters' crown" A SECTIO N After half a season developing a bit of form in Junior Section 1 your tipster has been given his chance irt A Grade Faced with the position that only two games separate the third and last sides in the competition, I'm sure there are going to be a power of games that are close and hard fought Selecting winners is never easy but with the competition so close and intense there's sure to be plenty of mud in this tipster's eye before long Uni Blacks meet De La Salle O C at home this week with the university side buoyant from their defeat of Caulfield Tracey and Cordner are in good form but I don't think they will be strong enough to withstand the pressure of De La Salle O C, who will be coming back hard after the defeat inflicted by Ivanhoe Sheeky will be bound to have his team geared up for a morale-boosting win and I must select De La Salle Ormond meet Old Scotch in the game which should be the highlight of the round Ormond handed out a thrashing to St Bernard's In a game in which Bruce Bourn e was back to his niercurial best with 8 goals Because of their better percentage Ormond are knocking on the door of the Four and will be fiercely determined to win Old Scotch, on the other hand, were great in their defeat by Lint Blues and have Mason in good goal kicking form This is bound to be a hard fought match and I'm tipping Ormond with their home ground advantage to win Ivanhoe, cock-a-hoop after their gallant defeat of De La Salle, meet Marcellin, who received a severe drubbing at the hands of North OB Ivanhoe realise that Ormond are breathing down their necks and realise that they must improve their percentage as well as keep on winning to stay in the Four Sheppard, Jones and Stewart are in good form and should overcome the stout resistance that Marcellin are sure to provide Marcellin are in the hot seat as far as relegation is concerned and must make every post a winner from now on Nort h O B, after a very slow start, are on the rise and displaying the power that took them to the top of the ladder in 1977 O'Connor has been playing excellently and received great support from his team mates On the other hand, St Bernard's are very much on the down after two crushing defeats and Coach Gus Mitchell, will have to pull something out of the box to get the Saints off the floor Some of St Bernard's stars of yesteryear seem to have lost a lot, of their glitter and most of their determination so I can't see them knocking off the confident Northerners The final game of the round is that between Caulfield Grammarians and Uni Blues Uni Blues had a tough game against Old Scotch and are bound to be feeling the after-effects This will be to the advantage of Caulfield, who just failed against an improved Uni Blacks: It was good to see a veteran, J Butcher, in such fine goal kicking form last week Uni Blues are bound to have a let down this week but Coach Salter should be able to produce the best from Sleeman, Curnow, Anderson and others to win out against Caulfield My selections are: De La Salle O C, Ormond, Ivanhoe, North OB and Uni Blues - MICHAEL J ARNOLD We season been B SECTION have reached the halfway mark of the and what a great competition it ha s I take this opportunity to congratulate the Old Melburnians Club on the 'magnificent performance of their team Apart from their unbeaten record so far, the manner in which they play the game is a credit to the Coach and players of the team This week Old Melburnians take on the Fawkner Boys at Cordner Oval Fawkner showed improvement in their staying power to fight out a draw with Old Trinity last week I have always been a keen fan of Fawkner, but I don't think they are ready to toss O M's just yet The leaders are doing it well under all conditions, os I'll go for Old Melburnians to win THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JUNE 24, 1978 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JUNE 24, 1978 Page 5

PREVIEWS (cont ) Parkside meet Collegians at Pitcher Park in what should be an extremely hard game Parkside overcame the bad conditions to defeat a very young, well-disciplined Coburg last week Collegians had a good win over Old Halleybury, so both sides will line up confidently Parkside must keep winning at home If they are to take part in th!s year's Finals, so they will be quite desperate Both teams can play a game right out, but I think the advantage of playing at home will tip the scales in Parkside's favour Old Trinity at home, meet Old Paradians in another difficult one to pick I have not taken a trick with either of these teams so far They are both capable of playing top football I was very impressed with the way the consistent Paradians went about their game two weeks ago The bye should not have hurt them so I will tip Old Paradians as the winner of this one Monash Blues play host to Old Haileybu ry at the University Oval The Blues could not handle O M 's last week, but I know of seven other clubs who have had the same problem this season Old Haileybury also lowered their colours to the Collegians last week and this will not go down too well with Coach Mike Porter I have learnt from experience that it is dangerous to tip against Monash Blues when they are playing at home, so I'll select Monash to win The young Coburg side have the bye This will give them time to get a few of their injured players fit again and back in harness I would like to congratulate them on the disciplined way they played last week They should have learnt a lot from the game Their Coach, Tony Holloway, has the answers, so they should listen to him and get on with the job of winning games Selections : Old Melburnians, Parkside, Old Paradians, Monash Blues - BRIAN LAUDER C SECTIO N Well done, Old Carey! Richard Elliott will be intrigued to know that I very nearly tipped them last week However, while Carey may be struggling to avoid relegation, this year's C Section is capable of more upsets with the second half of club games commencing today The "four" is wide open - third to fifth placings = Geelong, Old Brighton and Alphington - separated by approximately 15%, and Old Ivanhoe and Old Xaverians only one game behind Geelong has the edge in third place at this stage, having dropped only one game (to A J A X) in the last six Old Brighton (my early flag favourites), in contrast, has slumped decidedly in recent weeks That was a top effort, AJA X, in accounting for St Kilda so impressively Today, you must now dispose of Old Brighton at home If you are to move closer to arresting the top spot And watch Old Brighton, who are at the crossroads A loss to them will threate n Page 6 their final four hopes I expect AJ home, to be far too AX, at good Geelong, helped greatly by the inclusion of brilliant former captain, Lyn Bullen, turned on its most significant quarter of football for years, last week Alphington challenged Geelong mid-way through the third term and bounced to the lead early in the final quarter, after having been six goals downi Geelong rallied and, with Greg Trevaskis, previously unsighted, kicking much-needed goals, grabbed back the lead and went on to a good win Hampton beat Geelong at the David Reserve early in the season I expect Geelong to reverse this result at Queen's Park today Old Carey - Old Ivanhoe I have "won" with my tipping on Ivanhoe at last, I still think they are a good enough side to beat Old Carey However, I must stick with winning form - Carey wili win at Bulleen Old Xaverians are an enigma - down two weeks ago, up again last Saturday St 'Kilda may not be entering a slump, as I'm sure that their dedicated President, John White (congratulations on 300 games!) will appreciate last week's loss will prove "a needle" for the club Maurie Bilston is a shrewd operator -! The Bankers are quite capable of winning this one and so remain a final four prospect Clayton and Monash Whites should provide a close match - not one that would attract a big attendance but this could be the highlight of the Monash season However, I think that Clayton will have a faint edge Bulleen United at home to Thornbury could be a preview of a Grand Final and if Thornbury are going to fall over in their 1978 charge, this is the match If Bulleen can match the - Thornbury vigor and skill, and they should be capable of so doing if they have any hopes of leaving F Section, then today is the day Should the Berries win, then, in the words of a famous club song, "the premiership is a cakewalk" Bulleen to win, and no offence meant to Smithy and his crew Selections: Therry C C, National Bank, Clayton, Bulleen United, Commonwealth Bank - the idle mob - SYD WHITFIELD JUNIOR 1 SECTION After a frustrating nine weeks trying to comprehend A Grade form, I'm now faced with the task of tipping Junior Section 1 My predecessor tells me that it's a one-horse race, even at this' early stage, but from what I've seen and heard, I don't think North Old Boys are the certainties that many people believe Both Monash and Uni Blues are improving all the time, but it remains to be seen whether they can continue that improvement Match of the Day sees Monash at home to the unbeaten North Old Boys Monash will 'give North, their hardest game to date and with the added advantage of their windy home ground, I'm tempted to start off my Juniors tipping career with a controversial prediction However, I'll resist the temptation and stick with North Their form last week was magnificent and they'll be too tall and strong for Monash Ormond travel to Geelong, determined to make amends for their loss last week, at Ivanhoe Geelong are not far away from their first win as they showed in their last home game where they led Ivanhoe at three-quarter time Another loss will put Ormond out of Final's contention and this should be sufficient incentive for them to scrape home Hampton Rovers had a good win last week over St Bernard's and are confidently awaiting their clash today with Old Scotch Scotch were totally overwhelmed by North's strength last week and got a sound thrashing They will not have things all their own way today, but should win and consolidate their position in the Four Ivanhoe are at home to Uni Blues in a game vital to both sides Ivanhoe are out of the Four on percentage only and a win today would probably see them sneak In Blues have finally taken second place and they will not give it up lightly After their'good form agains t THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JUNE 24, 1978 Page 7
