NEWSLETTER NO 5 Page 2 RUGBY CONVENOR Senior Rugby results v St Andrew s Cathedral School CCGS 1 st XV 10 lost to St. Andrew s Cathedral School 17 CCGS 16s 19 defeated St Andrew s Cathedral School 17 CCGS 15s 24 defeated St Andrew s Cathedral School 17 CCGS 14s 91 St Andrew s Cathedral School 0 Last Saturday, we hosted our first full round of matches for the 2015 ISA season. Congratulations to the 14s, 15s and 16s teams who all recorded great first up wins. Unfortunately, the 1 st XV went down in a very close match against a big St. Andrew s team. This Saturday, we take our annual bus journey to Bathurst to take on All Saints College in round 3 matches. Unfortunately, our 15s will not have a match as All Saints are not fielding a team in that age group this year. Good luck all teams and let s keep the great momentum established last Saturday at home going forward in our away matches. The School is looking for Parent volunteers to assist with the running of BBQs and catering for sporting home games in Terms 2 and 3. It would be ideal if Parents from our Rugby teams could assist. If you can help out in any way please contact Paul Geddes by on pgeddes@ccgs.nsw.edu.au

NEWSLETTER NO 5 Page 3 CCGS 1st XV CCGS 10 St Andrew s Cathedral School 17 (Tries: Wilkinson, Greenwood) A very difficult first-up game for the season. St Andrew s began extremely strongly and with bigger forwards made great inroads at every opportunity. Ruck penalties kept us in the game. As the game progressed we steadied and began to fight back. By half time, we had conceded only one try and this was a testament to the boys digging-in and defending at all costs. The second half was much better, with the boys getting a number of two and three phases together and we scored our first out wide. The second was a beauty. From the kick-off we won the lineout and pass-catch to the corner. Our discipline was better this half and gaining a majority of the penalties kept us in the game.. Well done, even with missed opportunities and against a far bigger forward pack. Work in progress. Next week All Saints! Expectations of being a member of the 1st XV Rugby Squad 1: Attend all training sessions in recognised school rugby gear. 2: If you are unable to attend a training session you must inform the rugby staff as soon as possible. 3: Wear full school uniform to all games. 4: Attend all after-match functions both home and away. 5: Supply a plate of food for all home games.

NEWSLETTER NO 5 Page 4 CCGS Under 16 CCGS 16s 19 defeated St Andrew s 17 (Tries: Bastick, Brown 2. Goals: Baines 2 ) The Under 16s ran out for the first game of the season in beautiful conditions. Both CCGS and St Andrew s 16s wanted to win from the outset. The battle began in the forwards and continued at a furious pace. Late in the first half we were able to score through multiple phase play to lead 7-5 at half time after St Andrew s scored a well constructed try. The second half saw a continuation of torrid phase play from both sides. Both teams scored two tries and a goal, with CCGS just on top at the final whistle. Next week we are looking forward to meeting All Saints in Bathurst. Lots to do! CCGS Under 15 CCGS 15s 24 defeated St Andrew s 17 (Tries: Stimpson, Scarr, Bennett. Goals: Hughes, Mare) Well what a game to start the season with. Our boys displayed a very skilful game of rugby with a number a multiple phase plays and a commitment to our game plan. Our Same way, same way, same way pattern had the opposition in array from the outset. The forward pack was led by James Stimson who busted the opposition up the middle and was rewarded with a wellearned try. The support play was great by the boys. There were a number some brilliant across field cover tackles completed by Tim Scarr which also marked as highlights in the first half. St Andrews lead at half time 12-5 and had most of the possession and were in our half for the majority of the game time. I spoke to the boys about their commitment to each other at half time and they didn t led CCGS down. With the wind now behind our backs our boys stepped up a peg. Good leg drive and commitment saw both Tim Bennett and Tom Herron cross the line after a good set of supportive forward play. Tim Scarr was also rewarded with a try for his commitment to back up and support the backs. With the game poised at 12 all a conversion goal by Mikai Mare from out wide put CCGS in front for the first time in the match. With this the boys lifted themselves and finished off the task of defeating an opposition that caused havoc for this side last year. There is room for improvement in our team so every player must commit themselves to training and to games. It was a great start but the season has just begun. I look forward to watching this team develop their skill sets and implement these on the park with greater accuracy and efficiency. Great Start. Bring it on.

NEWSLETTER NO 5 Page 5 CCGS Under 14 CCGS14s 91 defeated St Andrew s 0 (Tries: McGimpsey 4, Mogg 2, Hingerty 2, Gordon, Munster, Baker, Gray, Storey, Charytanowicz, Fischer tries; Goals: Gordon 4, Tancred 4 ) This was a terrific start to the 2015 season. It has been great to have some new members to the team and we are really excited about the rest of the season ahead. The Grammar side totally dominated the opposition in every aspect of the game. The team was excellent in defence and they put together some strong phases in attack that regularly resulted in tries for our players. We are hoping to have a go at contested scrums this weekend and we will be working on improving our effectiveness at the breakdown. Congratulations on a strong performance in our opening game. Let s continue on with what has been an excellent start.

Page 6 RUGBY NEWSLETTER FROM THE PREP CONVENOR Round 2 Results Under 9s CCGS 10 defeated by Barker 36 Under 10s CCGS 7 defeated by Terrigal Trojans 24 Under 11s CCGS defeated by Mosman Prep Prep 1 st XV Bye Round Prep First XV Training Jumpers. Once again Mr Matthew Welsh has donated a full team set of training jumpers for the Prep First XV. On behalf of the team and CCGS Prep Rugby thank you very much for your support. The players of recent years have certainly enjoyed this privilege and our Prep First XV for 2015 are no different. Mr Luke McLoughlin CCGS Under 9 CCGS Under 9s 10 lost to Barker 36 The conditions at Barker College s Peter Taylor field for the inaugural game for this group of boys could not have been better. Barker were perfect hosts, the referee did a great job explaining the rules and encouraging the boys to play the game in the best spirit. It was great to see a turnout of 16 boys and vocal supporters for Grammar. The Grammar boys gave a fantastic account of themselves, contesting the ball and challenging the opposition in open play. Half time saw the score line at to Barker, with Grammar right in the contest thanks to two scintillating tries from Jack McHugh. The second half became a little scrappy and with a few bounces going Barkers way and bit of disorganisation creeping in the score finished up to Barker. Far from a disappointment, the boys left the field to a huge round of applause from all spectators. Going forward the boys will concentrate on ball security, making tackles stick and learning their individual roles in the game and a win will be just around the corner. Thanks to the Barnett family for the oranges. Jack McHugh 3 points, Flynn Jones 2 points, Casper Mudge 1 point.

NEWSLETTER NO 5 Page 7 CCGS Under 10 CCGS Under 10s 7 defeated by Terrigal Trojans 24. Under 10s in action. CCGS Under 11 CCGS Under 11s defeated by Mosman Prep After several weeks of wild weather resulting in a Round 1 wash out, we were gifted with a magnificent Central Coast Autumn morning to play Mosman Prep. The team was understandably anxious and there was a nervous tension in the air as Coach Cusak ran them through the pre-match warmup. Mosman Prep showed their strength early in the first half resulting in a number of early tries and conversions. The Under 11s were taken a little by surprise but never gave up, showing periods of strong defence on the line and some solid runs. The second half saw a more committed CCGS team that managed to slow down the Mosman attack. We need to work on our consistency, making sure we follow up in support and tighten up our play at the breakdown. It was good to see the parents from last year back on the sideline this season, together with a few new faces. Special thanks to Matthew Welsh for running the side.
