THURSDAY 9 JUNE TERM 2 WEEK 7 The wildest weekend Sydney has seen in many years didn t prevent our 1 st XV and 2 nd XV from going to battle against Trinity at Summer Hill. In difficult conditions both teams put on gutsy performances. The 2 nd XV got home on the back of a remarkable hat trick from fullback Jack Anderson while the 1 st XV lost by the narrowest of margins despite putting their bodies on the line for the full 70 minutes. Congratulations are in order for the following boys who have been selected to represent CAS South Harbour at U/16 level; Ed Banks, Andrew Glastras, Oscar May, Harvey Tilley, Tim White, Matt Harris and Will Crowley. The game v North Harbour is on this afternoon (Thursday) with a 2pm kick off on Hordern Oval. Finally, best of luck to those competing in the State Championships this weekend (names listed on page 2). Luke Bower Head of Rugby

Match Reports 4 June 1 st XV 6:7 Loss Last Saturday the 1st XV made their way out to Summer Hill to play an in form Trinity team. The boys in white knew it was going to be a competitive hit out with the prize being third place on the ladder at the half way mark of the competition. With all other 1st XV games called off due to the weather conditions, the fixture was looking to be very wet and muddy. Accuracy was going to play a big role in the result of the game.

The game started with a kickoff from Cranbrook running against the wind. With the ground being very wet and unstable, scrums appeared to be a nuisance for both teams. From the get go Trinity appeared to be running all of their big men off of the halfback and Cranbrook adjusted well to cover defensively.

A penalty to Cranbrook led to Stenmark putting the first three points of the game on the scoreboard. Trinity managed to make a linebreak and after attacking for multiple phases inside Cranbrook's 22, were able to spread the ball wide and score the first try of the game. A converted kick had the game at 7-3 at half time. With the wind now in Cranbrook's favour, the boys in white aimed to punch corners and play footy in Trinity's half.

Another penalty was awarded to Cranbrook in front of the sticks and was converted by Stenmark to put the scoreboard to 7-6. Dropped balls and unforced errors seemed to be a big problem for both teams with multiple balls being dropped due to the conditions. The game was coming to a near end and Cranbrook found themselves defending their line for the last 10 minutes of the game.

Some really gutsy efforts from Broekhuizen and captain Kemeny had the boys putting their bodies on the line to keep Trinity from scoring. The final whistle was blown with the final score of 7-6. Cranbrook look to respond to the loss against an undefeated Knox side next week. Tom Lamens 2 nd XV 19:10 Win The mighty 2 nd XV took on Trinity at Prospect Rd on Saturday. Cold and wet conditions were going to make life difficult for both teams. Trinity came ready to play but Cranbrook s overwhelming attacking play saw Jack Anderson run twenty metres from a charge down to open the scoring for Cranbrook.

Strong defensive ruck work from Oscar Lim-Strachan put Trinity on their toes with Cranbrook winning several penalties. James Walker and Connor Sprague also made strong runs through the middle. On the stroke of halftime, Trinity scored an unfortunate try close the gap to two points in Cranbrook s favour. In the 2 nd half an unfortunate yellow card for Harry Doyle left us with 14 men. Joe Pardey and Henry Smith put their hands up in attack and in defence. Despite this Trinity managed to score again making the score 7-10 to Trinity with 6 minutes left.. The boys never gave up with the fresh legs of Garth Reynolds and Noah Busteed providing much needed impact. After many phases on the Trinity goal line, Jack Anderson picked up the ball from a metre out to dive over to give Cranbrook the lead 12:10 with only minutes remaining.

Trinity bounced back immediately, placing a good penalty kick on our line. Strong defence from Jordan Maples and Fraser Ross held them back for 8 phases before an intercept saw Jack Anderson run 95 metres to complete his hat trick and bring the final score to Finn Weir Match Reports v Sydney Grammar 8 June 15A 51:5 Win The Cranbrook 15A s had a very strong performance against Sydney Grammar displaying how to play running rugby. It started from the kick off with a catch and short pop to Perry Tasker who broke a few tackles to get over the advantage line.

This dominant running from the forwards continued throughout the entire match which sucked in defenders to open up space out wide for the backs to exploit. The backs were making line breaks, running through holes and finding overlaps with ease leading to many tries being scored. Leo Christopher opened up the scoring by receiving a pass in support and scored another two through strong support to get himself a hat-trick for the afternoon.

Further tries followed to Oscar Pindaric, Xavier Zuccon, Oli Lamens, Max Epstein and Peter North. Cranbrook were winning 37:0 at half time. In the second half most of the B s came onto play and played well to keep scoring points and only letting Grammar in for one try. Cranbrook dominated possession for the majority of the game with good control from Jack Smith at five-eighth and when Grammar got the ball they often forced a mistake to get the ball back.

Overall it was a really good performance and display of running rugby from Cranbrook. Hopefully they can carry that momentum into a tough clash against Knox next weekend. Anders Steglick 14A 19:17 Win The 14As took to Weigall field determined to put in a positive performance over local rivals Sydney Grammar. Cranbrook started off well with Henry Martin scoring a try which was converted to give the visitors a 7-0 lead. A tight tussle ensued with Cranbrook applying good pressure but unable to convert pressure into points.

Henry Martin crossed for his second to give Cranbrook a 12-0 lead but Grammar fought back hard to score the next two tries to level the scores at Despite numerous handling errors Cranbrook were controlling the game and were next to score thanks to a brilliant try from Peter Masselos in the centres. Will Clunies-Ross converted to give Cranbrook a lead. Grammar fought back once again to score in the closing stages to narrow the gap to While there were some pleasing aspects of the performance, Cranbrook must continue to improve before their next fixture against Knox. 13A 62:0 Win On Wednesday afternoon Cranbrook went down to Sydney grammar school to play a game of rugby. The start of the game was a bit scrappy but some good defence and pilfering by Freddie Walton and Max White led to some good tries by Mathew Yetton and Maxim Zahra.

Ball movement was going well with Tom Pintaric opening up holes for Maxim Zahra and Alfie Dumas which later on led to a 90m try by Maxim. There was good effort in the front door runners who did not get the ball much but played a crucial part in opening up gaps on the edge. Daniel Lazerson had a good run down the side line but was then taken down by a high tackle but still went onto a try. There were a lot of gaps around the outside of the field which could have led to many more tries. At half time Cranbrook were winning comfortably but the coaches wanted more. The second half started off well with a quick pick and drive try by Will Levy which was then followed by many more by fellow team mates.

The second half was a higher point scoring half then the first mainly because the team held onto the ball more and made our one on one tackles. Rucks were better which meant the half back could distribute the ball faster which lead to great tries. At the end of the second half Lachlan Carroll opened up a great gap for Mathew Yetton to run through to an offload to Maxim Zahra which lead to a great try which made the coaches happy. Ball movement was at a much higher standard than last game which meant Cranbrook could create gaps around the outside. Overall Cranbrook had a good game with a comfortable 62-0 win with Maxim Zahra running in 5 tries for the team. Liam Sartena

Message from the Cranbrook Rugby Club Cranbrook Rugby Contribution 2016 Please support Cranbrook Rugby via a contribution of $200, $300, $500, $1000 or $ Dear Cranbrook Rugby Community and Friends On behalf of the Cranbrook Rugby Club (CRC) we again thank you for your continuing support and commitment to our mission to assist in the development of a quality, world class schoolboy rugby programme for Cranbrook. As a result of the generous support from the majority of rugby families and the wider Cranbrook Rugby Community, the CRC has been able to make significant progress towards a permanent culture change, for the benefit of all our boys. We invite you to participate again in In 2015, your generous assistance through the enormously successful Rugby Lunch, tax effective voluntary contributions and support for the BBQ and Rotunda on match days, enabled the CRC to the fund a $120,000 capital spend on strength and conditioning equipment for all Senior School boys in all sports. A further $45,000 was spent on specialist coaching and state of the art video analysis. Other investment included: tour support, the successful trial of lighting on Hordern Oval, leadership, safety and nutrition education and a range of initiatives to encourage participation, particularly for our Junior School boys. Your support for these efforts have been achieved in partnership with the School and with the blessing of the Council. Furthermore, the School s commitment is evidenced with the appointment of two, full time personal trainers to ensure the strength and conditioning facility is available 52 weeks a year and with the appointment of a Director of Athletes to augment the credentialed rugby people, already on the Senior Executive team. We continue to thank the Cranbrook Rugby Founders for their service and financial support but encourage all families and the wider community to contribute again to ensure our funding model is equitable, sustainable and efficient. Thank you also for the support of those who have been able to secure a table at the sold out 2016 Cranbrook Rugby lunch. We are confident that the financial success of the lunch and each family s generosity today in making their 2016 tax effective contribution will secure our programmes into the future and enable the CRC to organise Cranbrook Rugby community events that are free, subsidised or offered on a modest cost recovery basis.
