THURSDAY 5 MAY TERM 2 WEEK 2 A bumper edition of Running Lines this week as we look back on last week s fixtures, hear about the USA Tour that took place in the holidays and get ready for all the action that lies ahead. We are in the middle of another busy rugby week; the Cranbrook Rugby lunch is on Friday, 1 st XV Captain s Brunch Saturday morning and Saturday also sees Cranbrook host Knox Grammar in Round 1 of the CAS competition on Hordern. In what is always a fierce battle, Cranbrook will be looking to protect home turf against the reigning 1 st XV premiers. Opening day is a great occasion and I encourage as many of our rugby community as possible to head down to Hordern. Parking is difficult on home days so I encourage families to arrive early. Also included in this Edition of Running Lines is a report on Tuesday s first Leadership Lunch of the season with Morgan Turinui, information about our Injury Clinic and Medical Services and this week s team lists. Look forward to seeing you on the sidelines this weekend. Luke Bower Head of Rugby

Leadership Lunch The first leadership lunch of the season took place with former Wallaby and Wallaby Vice Captain Morgan Turinui speaking to our Captains and Vice-Captains about leadership. Morgan spoke in detail about strategies that can be used during the game, at training and prior to the season that can promote effective leadership and, in turn, better performance.

USA Tour Report After a long 14 hour flight to LA, 87 Cranbrook students disembarked the plane and headed through customs to start the adventure of a lifetime. All of the boys were eager to get out into LA to explore a city we knew so little about. After we left the airport we got on a bus and headed straight towards the famous Venice Beach. At Venice beach we split off into groups with a teacher to walk around and discover the famous area. Although as we walked along the boardwalk we started to become entertained by the miscellaneous and odd people there. There were a whole range of diverse individuals. From people stumbling their way around the beach, to street artists and buskers to women peculiarly talking to their ankles. We all were surprised by the culture of Venice Beach even though it was rather amusing to watch. We then headed to Santa Monica Pier where we had time to walk around and familiarise ourselves with a pier that we had seen so much of online but had never physically been to.

We then headed to Bubba Gump where we all quickly became acclimatized to American food portions and the scene of close to 100 people taking over a restaurant. We all had an appetizing dinner, with a picturesque sunset on the horizon behind us. After such an awesome first day we all thought it was going to be pretty hard to beat as we headed back to our hotel for a good night s sleep. Alarms went off at 5:30 AM as we headed downstairs and outside into the crisp LA air. Due to a lack of punctuality and preparation the previous day from the rugby boys, we woke early and had great fun with some early morning fitness. Punctuality and preparation was not an issue as boys tiredness and anxiousness of having to wake up early again fueled our good behaviour for the rest of the trip. After a great breakfast buffet at the Embassy Suites the rugby and football boys split to attend two training sessions, one at the Rhinos Rugby Club in Irvine and the other with the football team, LA Galaxy. The rugby boys were blown away by the standard of the Rhinos training facilities which were similar to that of a professional team.

After a strenuous training session we jumped on our buses again and headed over to Huntington Beach. From here we were given time to explore the restaurants and shops at the beach. Later that evening we headed up to Griffith observatory where we all witnessed a sunset that coloured the bright lights of LA with an orange filter.

Then we headed over to Universal City where we had dinner and had some fun being on the big screen in the open public dancefloor. We then headed back to our hotels for a good night sleep after another action packed day. We woke early this morning for what we knew would be another big day. We first travelled to Hollywood for a walking tour around the famous precinct. We visited the Chinese Theater and spent some time looking at the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Next stop was the Coliseum; A monumentally large and historic stadium (93,000 capacity) which plays home to University of Southern California Trojans football team and will soon also host the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL.

We had a tour of the massive stadium going to coaching boxes, USC locker rooms and the field. We all learnt a range of facts about USC history, the rivalry between USC and Notre Dame, some of its famous footballing alumni (Reggie Bush, OJ Simpson) and some of the team s prior achievements. We then made our way to Staples Center where we had time to get a bite for lunch and explore the surrounding shops, while workers prepared the stadium for Kobe s last game which was to be played the following day. We then travelled back to the hotel to quickly get changed into game gear, and made our way to the Rhinos home ground. We were all excited to play our first rugby game of the tour and eager to discover the American playing style. As the whistle blew we were made aware of their strength and speed as we could see some characteristics of American football coming across into their game, which had an impact of their skill with the ball. Nevertheless, their agility overwhelmed us and was a great learning experience for all of us who played.

The 15s eventually went down while the 16s went down After the match we headed back to their training facilities where we pigged out, filling our guts with loads of chicken, salads and rice as we mixed with the opposition players. We then headed back to our hotel for our last night in LA to end what had been an awesome three days so far.

The Cranbrook touring team travelled from the bright lights and beaches of LA to the desert of Phoenix largely unsure of what to expect, as very few had been to Arizona prior to the trip. As we witnessed the landscape change from the coastal Los Angeles to the cactus filled desert we grew eager to explore Phoenix. To kick off our stay we enjoyed a large Mexican meal at a local favourite restaurant. Our first night was spent billeting with families from a local high school. We had mixed emotions going in to this but the overwhelming feeling was one of excitement. I can surely say for myself it was an amazing and eye-opening experience to see how people on the other side of the world lived and I m sure everyone who experienced it will agree. The next day for many was spent recovering from a virus that took its toll on many of us. The boys who were ill rested up in the hotel while the others had some lunch. Although missing some teammates the boys headed off to the games ready for the challenge. To add to the excitement both rugby teams had the venue changed to the main Football pitch of the Queen Creek High School which was a floodlit Friday Night Lights style American Football arena.

The 15s rugby won convincingly 38-7 in an entertaining and open brand of rugby against a strong and athletic yet relatively unskilled opponent. Standout performances included Perry Tasker and Darcy White s strong front on tackles while the passing of the group was slowly improving which led to more opportunities out wide. The

16 s came up against a good team made up from boys across Arizona and were slow out of the blocks, conceding two early tries. After ten minutes, the 16 s played some great rugby despite being down some of their best players due to illness and it was a night which bonded and matured the age group like no other.

The defensive effort from the whole team was outstanding as the electric atmosphere of a night game in the desert brought the best out of the tourists. Cranbrook was winning three tries to two late in the second half when unfortunately Max Raine suffered an injury that brought the game to a close. The bright side is that I m sure Max would have been proud in taking part in his team s gutsy victory over a more than worthy opponent. We hit the road early the next day with a couple of last activities before leaving Phoenix. The tour of Arizona State University (ASU) showed us the amazing facilities that American college students get to enjoy and I m sure many of us will now consider the possibility of studying in America.

After this we were given the opportunity to view the remarkable Chase Stadium home of the Arizona D backs. We were allowed a special treat in viewing the home team s dressing room, an opportunity that few can claim to have experienced and a wonderful way to end our stay in Phoenix. All in all, Phoenix was an extremely enjoyable leg of the tour that we will never forget for a variety of reasons. The next day, we rose early and headed out towards the Grand Canyon. A short drive away, this natural wonder was truly a sight to behold. We partook in a short hike around the crater, and this walk showed us how big the canyon truly was. It was truly massive, and no one could debate the fact that this was a true natural wonder of the world.

As we were about to depart from the spectacular canyon, one thing none of us expected to happen, it started snowing! This really summed up the beauty of the canyon, and it was amazing to see. We all then jumped on the bus and headed to the Hoover Dam. This was enormous, a theme which seemed synonymous with everything throughout the day. We viewed the dam from a bridge opposite, which was held 270 metres above the Colorado River!

A short time after departing the dam, we arrived in Las Vegas. Driving towards our hotel, we could see all the iconic buildings rise above the rest of the city and they were stunning, however our tour guide assured us that when we headed out there at night, they really came to life. Excited, we checked into the hotel, got changed and then headed out to dinner in the heart of the strip at an all you can eat buffet at a hotel called Paris, which, in true Vegas style, was situated underneath a replica Eiffel Tower (although a few unnamed travellers did think it was the real Eiffel tower). After filling up, we headed for a walking tour of the strip. By this time night had fallen and all the lights were on. We spent the next hour or two simply walking up and down the strip (with staff members), breathing it all in.

It was a vivid experience, with some of the highlights being the Bellagio fountains (which danced to Swan Lake), Caesars palace, and the MGM grand. You may think you know what Vegas is like, but until you truly experience the atmosphere you are completely ignorant to the unique culture which Vegas has.

The next day we headed out of the city to a ground to do some light training on. We had a thorough stretching session, played a few games of touch football and then headed off to what many were looking forward to the most; the outlet shopping. At this huge mall there were hundreds of big brand shops at discount prices; and for three hours Cranbrook took over the location, with 90 odd boys walking round with multiple shopping bags in each hand.

After every boy had lightened their (parents) wallets, we headed back to the hotel to prep for the game. We departed for the ground where the 16s team was set to take on the local Las Vegas Blackjacks. Looking forward to playing under lights and at night time in Vegas, we headed out with gusto, scoring two early tries to skip out to a 12-0 lead. From the very get go we could tell that this would be a physical game and the hosts slowly worked their way back into the game with some strong running. Unfortunately we did not come out with the result we wanted, however it was an amazing game to play in, with the lights of the strip on one side and the Desert Mountains on the other setting an intense atmosphere for the match.

After a long day on the road, we drove into the Yosemite National Park at around 10pm on Sunday night and checked into Evergreen Lodge, a beautiful, exotic and isolated setting right in the heart of Yosemite. Before we dispersed into our rooms we were given a briefing on the lodge and warned about the chance of seeing bears and not to leave any food on the balcony. We woke up early the next morning, checked for bears, had a hearty American breakfast and drove to some of Yosemite s more famous spots. First stop was Tunnel View Lookout which had an amazing panorama which included Bridevail Falls to the right and El Capitan to the left.

After plenty of photos we continued a little further on the buses and then got off to go for a hike around the base of Bridevail Falls. We hiked along this walking track and saw waterfalls and streams which were really incredible. After the hike we came up to one of the main streams in the park and went swimming. The water was around 8 degrees and none of the boys could stay in for long because it was so cold. We were at the park for around 4 hours and had lunch at a local restaurant. It really was the most incredible morning of our trip.

We drove back to the lodge and had a few hours of free time which kids spent in the pool or just chilling out around our 4.5* lodge. The 16 s got dressed up for dinner with the theme My dad s a lawyer. It was a really good meal that we had at the lodge at the outdoor setting before retiring at the end of a day we will never forget. We had a great breakfast at the lodge in Yosemite before our three-hour drive to Sacramento. Upon arrival we had a tour of Sacramento State University. We were all interested in this college and it had some great facilities and buildings.

From the university, we drove to Jesuit High School where we started match preparations. All teams had great games with a mixture of wins and losses. After the games we had an after match function which involved a Mexican feast with the opposing teams. It was great to spend time discussing rugby, school and many other teenage things. Most of the boys then went with their host families in what proved to be a memorable night of cultural exchange.

Following breakfast where they stayed the night before, we were then dropped off at Jesuit school to commence the drive to our final destination San Francisco. We first had a walk around Fisherman s Wharf which was then followed by a tour of the city which included a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge.

This 45 minute walk was a real highlight as we looked back across San Francisco and the greater Bay area. That night we went out to one of the more iconic American sporting stadiums in AT & T Park for major league baseball.

The stadium is set right in the heart of downtown San Francisco with home runs often hit into the neighbouring harbour. We watched the Arizona Diamondbacks versus the San Francisco Giants in a thrilling game that came down to the wire.

Thursday morning saw the group hop on the ferry to the infamous Alcatraz Island. This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip and was extremely interesting for everyone to hear about the history of the jail, the inmates which resided in it and the escape attempts.

We then had a little bit of leisure time around our hotel before heading to Treasure Island, yet another iconic San Francisco destination, for our final set of fixtures against Golden Gate Rugby Club. This was another fun set of fixtures with the 15s winning an entertaining contest before the 16s produced their best performance of the tour to go down on the buzzer

Another fun post-match function consisting of pulled pork burgers took place where we spent time with the opposition. On our last day we had a good sleep in and breakfast at a local restaurant. We then started an adventure in the rain where we took a famous cable car up and down the hills of San Francisco to the downtown area where we spent a few hours shopping for gifts for our parents.

A return cable car trip followed before heading for a team farewell dinner at the Rainforest Café. A final walk around Fisherman s Wharf and some sea lion spotting concluded the evening before we got on the bus as it headed towards San Francisco International Airport and the long trip home. Words, photos and stories cannot do justice to the unbelievable time that we had over this two week period. We created memories that will stay with us for the rest of our lives and we are indebted to the staff who made this trip possible. Tas Smith, Will Crowley, Finn Parker, Leo Christopher, Max Epstein

Match Reports 30 April 1 st XV 13:5 Win The First XV took on Stanislaus on Saturday as the last hit out of the 2016 trials. All the boys on the paddock had been working hard for month s prior in the gym and other trial games and this preparation was immediately tested from the first tackle. The game was set to be physical, with each team providing some solid attacking and defensive efforts. Despite our boys dominance in the first half with strong ball carries. Stanislaus were the first to put points on the board. Strong defence from Tom Chirnside and Ollie Burston contributed to holding Stanislaus back keeping them to only one try.

Successful back line moves executed by strong runs from Darcy Searl and Tom Lamens kept Stanislaus on their toes, and strong ball carries from Josh Kemeny led to a try putting the score to 7-5 at half time. The 2 nd half saw the boys in red executing plays with structure and strength. Strong line out plays led by Tom Burston helped us secure the ball and maintain possession, to prevent Stanislaus from gaining attacking momentum. Well placed kicking from Darcy Searl had us in their half and helped us to score a penalty goal making it An unfortunate red card put us on the back foot, making every tackle count.

Jake Broekhuizen and Jackson Senes put their hands up in defence and led the defensive line. Holding Stanislaus back we managed to score another penalty with the accurate kicking from Darcy Searl making the score This win will put us in good stead facing the supposed CAS giants Knox at home for the first round of the season. F. Weir 2nd XV Win 8:7 The 2nd XV were well prepared for the game. The boys had trained hard over the holidays in the gym and on tour. Strong runs from Joe Pardey and Jack Suriano, led to a try leaving the score at 5-0 going into half time. Strong defensive plays from James Walker and Henry Smith, kept Stanislaus scoreless going into the second half. Bertie Sanger using well placed grubbers and midfield kicking kept Stanislaus in their own half. Despite the boys in red dominating the contact Stanislaus managed to score off a penalty leaving the score at 7-5. Last minute of the game we won a penalty, with Joey Cussen slotting in the winning goal. Leaving the score at 8-7. This was a good test for the boys and will provide them with confidence going into the first round of the CAS season. 3 rd XV 0:12 Loss Congratulations to St Stanislaus on taking their opportunities and scoring 2 tries. This was a good lesson in the need to work together. There were strong runs and individual performances but too often there were not supporting players to maintain the pressure and possession in attack. We need to be quicker to the breakdown and go in low in order to win ruck ball. We held their runners up in a few mauls which was excellent but unfortunately were not rewarded. Individually, there were strong carries but too often they ended in us losing ball after contact. If we can maintain possession and put together a number of strong runs then we will build pressure and be rewarded. The lack of combination is no surprise as we have very limited time training as a team but this will hopefully change in the coming weeks. S. Pardey 4 th XV 5:24 Loss When the 4ths took on St.Stanislaus College they went into it as a team with little experience playing with each other and everyone was keen to give it a red hot crack. The first half saw some strong attack from the opposition, which was counteracted with a try from us to even out the score. Over the second half a lack of fitness saw the game drop and ultimately led to an opposition victory, we came out of the game proud of our effort and with focus areas to improve in training.

16A 26:21 Win After a long USA tour, involving a vast amount of rugby, the 16A team was hungry for a win. From the opening minutes Cranbrook's aggression and desire for the ball was at a much higher point than Stanislaus had imagined. Cranbrook's great ball handling and constant ruck defence kept the team in the opposition s half leading to 3 early tries. The second half was to be the true challenge for the team, as Stanislaus only came back harder and stronger. Coming on thinking the game was in Cranbrook's hands the team couldn't have been more wrong. Luckily for Cranbrook George Dovellos was able to secure another try from a set piece. Quickly hitting back Stanislaus unforgiving and constant ball running, they broke Cranbrook's lines constantly leading to two tries. Fortunately for the 16's, the team was able to put this game down as a win and look forward to the CAS competition H. Tilley 16B 12:48 Loss Just a week before Round 1 of the CAS season against Knox, the Cranbrook 16B's faced up against a well drilled St Stanislaus outfit. Despite a string of frustrating errors in attack which resulted in Stanislaus tries, Cranbrook were back in the contest when Jack Allen crossed their line midway through the 1st half. Early in the second half Cranbrook put another converted try on the board due to an impressive break from Alby Greaves, with McGrath dotting down the next phase. Unfortunately, Stanislaus scored a few more tries due to some poor Cranbrook defence. The boys in red will look to bounce back for the first game of the season next week. A. Buchen 16C 15:35 Loss St Stanislaus came out strong, with two quick tries in the opening plays having the C's on the back foot. But having to adjusted to the pace and physicality of the country boys, the Cs started to building phases keeping the ball in hand, and equalising the score. The forwards had a great game securing ball, unfortunately we through away possession letting Stanislaus take control. The performances of the week go to Liam Corr, for his hard work in defence and around the breakdown, and Harry Shutes for his swift running that allowed the C's to build pressure. It was a great and tough warmup match, that has put the C's in good stead heading into Knox this weekend.

15A 24:26 Loss Cranbrook came into the game after coming back from their trip to the USA. With a full team, Cranbrook was looking to set a good platform for the CAS season. The game started with Stanislaus kicking off. After some poor defence from Cranbrook, Stanislaus crossed the line very early in the game and managed to convert. After some good front foot ball and quick thinking from Jude Gibbs off of a quick tap, Cranbrook managed to barge over the line and tie the game up. Minutes later Cranbrook managed to create space out wide which turned out to be a great try through the hands off the entire backline which put Peter North over the line.

Later on in the half Stanislaus were able to pick and drive their way over the line and convert. Going into the second half two points down, Cranbrook managed to hold Stanislaus out off their line for a long while before Stanislaus crossed the line due to poor tackling, Stanislaus managed to convert. Late in the second half Jake Taylor managed to split the defence and cross over for a try that was later converted. Cranbrook ended up going down by two points. They will look to train hard during the week to try get a win against Knox. T. Smith 15B 7:35 Loss On Saturday, the 15B s played St Stanislaus at Woollahra. The B s started the game well making their way towards the try line, however, St Stanislaus made a quick break and scored tries off the back of our simple mistakes.

Soon after Henry Harding scored a try off the team s hard work to move from our 22 to their try line. This brought good momentum to the second half. St Stanislaus continued to capitalise and score off our mistakes. We were unfortunately left with no tries to show for our efforts in the second half. The 15B s will look at the mistakes we made and work hard to improve on them in advance of Round 1 of the CAS season against Knox. D. White 15C 12:24 Loss The 15C s turned up to the first home game of the season full of enthusiasm. Strong defence from both teams kept the score nil all until the 21st minute when the St Stanislaus team got across the line, but failed to convert. Soon after, Ben Parnell scored as the result of a solid back line move. Due to the good kicking of Marcus Roberts, this try was converted which put Cranbrook in the lead coming into half time. Tomas Nemirovsky scored Cranbrook s second try which was skilfully converted by Marcus Roberts. However, the St Stanislaus attack was too strong in the end as they scored another 3 tries to overpower the Cranbrook team making the final score A. Horth 14A 46:5 Win The 14As fixture against St Stanislaus was a good hit out leading into the CAS competition starting next week, winning Cranbrook started off strongly scoring 2 tries in the first 5 minutes.

After the 2 tries we dropped in intensity slightly, but still prevented the opposition from scoring. 2 quick fire tries before halftime from Saxon Purcell and a try from Will Begg put the score line to 22-0 at halftime. After the break we came out firing and began to score consistently throughout the second half.

A slight lapse in concentration with 2 minutes to go gave the Stanislaus boys a try on the bell. Overall our tackling and ball handling was very good, but there is still plenty to work on, heading into round 1 of the CAS season against Knox. W. Clunies Ross 14B 46:10 Win Overall, we performed well as a team and secured a solid win against a gritty Stanislaus team. We were good in attack but both forwards and backs must improve our handling skills in order to create a more fluid attack. Moving into the game against Knox, we must strive to improve our 1 on 1 tackling, as a few missed tackles on the weekend gave Stanislaus momentum that they eventually capitalised off. Stanislaus weren t the strongest in defence, and we capitalised well off this making breaks through gaps in their line, leading to some good tries from Ben Imbardelli. In conclusion, we performed well on the day but must keep improving week on week if we are to have a successful CAS season. S. Harris

13A 7:21 Loss The 13A s had a tough game on the weekend versus a country team from Bathurst, St Stanislaus. Playing against opposition who were physically big we still managed to put up a lasting fight right until the final whistle. While down 14-0 in the first half, we came back and managed to keep the score 7-7 in the second half thanks to a great try from Oli Torrance.

After a great second half performance we failed to score again leaving the final score at T. Pintaric 13B 10:29 Loss The 13B s squad played a resilient St Stanislaus team this week at Centennial Park. The boys had just returned from a successful rugby tour to Canberra and were ready to implement all the skills they had strengthened and learned against a new opponent. The first 10 minutes of the game was excellent in attack and defence. However, the St Stanislaus team bounced back and put on 29 unanswered points. With injuries to key ball players, the team lost their shape and have identified that resilience in game situations is one aspect they will look at as they approach the CAS competition. The boys are ready to get stuck into training and be ready to play Knox at home this weekend. 13 C/D 27:12 Win This week the 13C s and 13D s combined to play St Stanislaus 13C s team. It was a great effort from both the C s and D s playing as a squad throughout the whole game. Cranbrook took an early lead and dominated the game. In attack, the boys used the width of the park, with Nick McGrath picked up two tries. Sam, Cameron and Oliver also added to the try scoring list with one a piece and Justin Sheller kicking one conversion. The boys have identified key areas that they want to improve on and look forward to taking on Knox in the first CAS game of the season.

12A 5:38 Loss In the first round of the 2016 season, the Prep 1st team played Newington College. It was a challenging game and Newington s defence was very strong. They kept us scoreless in the first half making the score 26-0 at half time. After the break, Cranbrook lifted their game and started to become more defensive, conceding less points. After some great tackles from Axel Purcell, Cranbrook managed to get some points on the board. The final score was 38-5 to Newington. We will continue to work on our defence heading into next week s game. Jamie Finkelstein 12B 24:44 Loss On Saturday 30th April, Cranbrook played our first game of the season at Horden against Newington. Newington were a good team and deserved to win. They started extremely well in the first half, making some quick tries. Newington kept Cranbrook scoreless and at half time they were winning In the second half, Cranbrook improved our defence and made some strong tackles. We kept Newington to only one try. Cranbrook s attack also improved in the second half and we scored four tries with two conversions. By Tom Keith 11A 26:12 Win A tough start to the season saw us line up away against St. Pats. After some slow starts last season, the boys showed that trend wasn t going to continue this year with some strong and determined defence in the first 5 minutes. When we eventually turned over the ball we managed to go from our own 5m line, to the oppositions 5m over the course of 15 phases, only to come up short when it mattered most. The intent and commitment to retain the ball however was there for everyone to see. The forwards knew their roles and dominated the breakdown all day, while the backs looked composed and moved the ball very well. We eventually broke the deadlock twice before halftime, one try coming out wide after taking advantage clinically of the overlap, and the other straight through to middle after clever work from our centres. The second half was more of the same and even the forwards were now getting involved in playing the ball and putting it through the hands, something which is being asked of them this year. This was highlighted when our prop forward stood in at first receiver, fixed two players in front of him and threw a perfect pass out to our centre to score. Things that needed work was our midfield defence off set piece as both the St. Pats tries started with significant ground being made from the first phase off the scrum, and some of our running became slightly lateral towards the end. Overall a really impressive team performance to start the season with everyone contributing. 11B 0:61 Loss 11B's were slow out of the blocks with limited preparation after the commencement of the new term. St Patrick's College started the first half strong with a couple of early tries. However, the commitment from the boys in the second half could not be faulted with some

strong defensive efforts from Charlie Punch, Tom Wilson and Jimmy Nicholas giving us a strong foundation for the upcoming fixtures. 10A 0:56 Loss The 10A s had a tough round 1 fixture going down 56-0 against a strong Scots outfit. At times the A s were committed and willing to defend, although too many missed tackles led to easy points for Scots. Mention must be made to Angus Malcom and Max Forgarty for their endless efforts throughout the game. The 10A s have a big week of training ahead in preparation for another tough fixture against Newington College. J. Cohen 10B 5:27 Loss The Cranbrook 10B s headed up to Christison Park to play their round one fixture against Scots College. Coming off the back of a solid training session on Friday the boys were excited and focused on the challenge ahead. The first half was a true battle with both teams displaying great skill and understanding of the game. Strong defence and breakdown work from Angus Malcolm and Justice Single were the highlights. A number of strong carries from the Scots forwards took them into the break leading There was a clear improvement in the second half with the boys holding onto possession for longer periods, while maintaining a strong defensive line. An exciting run from Xavier Sorrenti led him to the try line for Cranbrook s first try. Unfortunately it was not enough against a strong Scots team as the boys went down C 7 a side On Saturday the Under 10 s sevens-side faced two tough GPS oppositions in Kings and Newington. Despite not coming away with victories, the team competed strongly, making noticeable improvements throughout the fixtures. Highlights of the two matches included barnstorming William Van der Byl's barnstorming runs and Hamish McDonald s finish on a skilful team try. 9A 50:40 Win The U9As started the season on a promising note defeating a spirited Kings side by 10 points. There is clearly a lot of individual talent in this team; it is now all about bringing it together to operate as a team, ensuring that the rucks are contested and the ball is passed, preferably before contact is made. The physicality of the boys was impressive, they just need to be aware of how much space they give the opposition to run. C. English 9B 40:30 Win There was a promising amount of structure to the B's performance. It is a steep learning curve in U9 rugby and the boys are beginning to grasp the idea that a ball passed is quicker than running across the pitch with it. The tacking was promising and one could sense confidence levels rising as more successful tackles were made. C. English

Each appointment at the Treatment Clinic will come at a cost (TBC) and payable via credit card details. All families will receive a receipt which may be used for health insurance purposes. Bookings are essential and must be made by to Luke Bower who will allocate a time slot. Both these clinics are in the trial stage and, depending on demand, may alter throughout the season.

Message from the Cranbrook Rugby Club Cranbrook Rugby Contribution 2016 Please support Cranbrook Rugby via a contribution of $200, $300, $500, $1000 or $ Dear Cranbrook Rugby Community and Friends On behalf of the Cranbrook Rugby Club (CRC) we again thank you for your continuing support and commitment to our mission to assist in the development of a quality, world class schoolboy rugby programme for Cranbrook. As a result of the generous support from the majority of rugby families and the wider Cranbrook Rugby Community, the CRC has been able to make significant progress towards a permanent culture change, for the benefit of all our boys. We invite you to participate again in In 2015, your generous assistance through the enormously successful Rugby Lunch, tax effective voluntary contributions and support for the BBQ and Rotunda on match days, enabled the CRC to the fund a $120,000 capital spend on strength and conditioning equipment for all Senior School boys in all sports. A further $45,000 was spent on specialist coaching and state of the art video analysis. Other investment included: tour support, the successful trial of lighting on Hordern Oval, leadership, safety and nutrition education and a range of initiatives to encourage participation, particularly for our Junior School boys. Your support for these efforts have been achieved in partnership with the School and with the blessing of the Council. Furthermore, the School s commitment is evidenced with the appointment of two, full time personal trainers to ensure the strength and conditioning facility is available 52 weeks a year and with the appointment of a Director of Athletes to augment the credentialed rugby people, already on the Senior Executive team. We continue to thank the Cranbrook Rugby Founders for their service and financial support but encourage all families and the wider community to contribute again to ensure our funding model is equitable, sustainable and efficient. Thank you also for the support of those who have been able to secure a table at the sold out 2016 Cranbrook Rugby lunch. We are confident that the financial success of the lunch and each family s generosity today in making their 2016 tax effective contribution will secure our programmes into the future and enable the CRC to organise Cranbrook Rugby community events that are free, subsidised or offered on a modest cost recovery basis. Thank you for your continuing support and generosity. Please make your voluntary contribution via :
