THURSDAY 19 MAY TERM 2 WEEK 4 Saturday was a great day for Cranbrook Rugby with many teams recording victories, including a clean sweep of the Opens away from home against St Aloysius. The 1 st XV showed plenty of character in their victory, having to come from behind at halftime to beat a determined St Aloysius outfit. In the Junior School I saw some great running rugby in the 9s fixtures that were played on a sun drenched Hordern Oval (see photo above) and heard good reports from many other matches. Next stop in the CAS competition sees us play host to Barker College at Hordern oval. It is our last home game until July and thanks to the generosity of the Cranbrook Rugby Club, all Junior School rugby players from Years 1 6 will be receiving a BBQ voucher for this Saturday, redeemable from 2.30pm at Hordern. We hope to see a large contingent of students in the stands cheering on the men in white as they look for back to back victories. Also included in this edition of Running Lines are times for Fixtures v Sydney Grammar with younger age groups (13A, 14A, 15A) playing mid-week while our 16As and 1 st XV will do battle with our local rivals in the last week of the holidays. Best of luck to all teams and with more great rugby weather predicted, I look forward to seeing many of you at Hordern on Saturday afternoon. Luke Bower Head of Rugby

After watching the rest of the Opens teams win, the boys were full of expectation and looked forward to an expansive open game. However a dropped ball from the kick off saw the team under immediate pressure and Aloysius opened the scoring with a try in the corner.

The team quickly put the disappointing start out of their minds and got into the game. A sniping run by half back Harry Doyle saw Cranbrook equalise at the 5 minute mark. Cranbrook were then well and truly in their stride putting together multiple phases which resulted in fullback Harrison Stewart finishing off a sweeping backline move.

Cranbrook was ahead 10-5 in a tight battle. An infringement at the ruck saw Cranbrook concede a penalty before Aloysius scored a runaway converted try to head into half time ahead. The Cranbrook team began the second half determined to attack and after 2 minutes of play Harrison Stewart was over for his second try. A conversion by Darcy Searl saw Cranbrook take the lead Harrison Stewart completed his hat trick of tries mid way through the half and the conversion saw Cranbrook extend the lead to

Aloysius were determined to keep playing attacking rugby and eventually found a gap in the defensive line to score a runaway try which closed the gap to 4 points with 10 minutes to play. The Cranbrook XV managed to keep their composure under pressure, kicking deep into the corners in an effort to keep Aloysius in their half. An exciting backline move eventually saw Finnbar Stenmark run through a hole to score a try which put the game out of reach for a determined Aloysius s team. It was a great team effort under pressure. Charlie Crammond 2nd XV 19:3 Win The mighty 2nd XV took on St Aloysius at College Oval on Saturday. Hot weather and sticky conditions were going to be a tough contender as the thermometer reached 24 degrees.

St Aloysius came ready to play, but Cranbrook s overwhelming attacking play put Harry Twomey over for a try. Strong defensive ruck work from Oscar Lim-Strachan put Aloysius on their toes with Cranbrook winning several penalties. A lucky penalty on the half way line put Aloysius within kicking distance making the score 7-3. Further attacking plays from Ed Renton and Jack Anderson broke through the Aloysius defence putting the score at 14-3 at halftime.

In the 2nd half an unfortunate yellow card for Ed Renton put our boys at 14 men, making every tackle vital. Joe Pardey and Henry Smith put their hands up in attack and in defence, while Matt Reynolds pinpoint kicking game made Aloysius attacking play suffer. Holding Aloysius back for 10 minutes Ed Renton re-joined the game. In the last 5 minutes Jack Anderson again with a strong run scored in the corner. Leaving the score at Finn Weir 3 rd XV 15:5 Win The 3 rd XV looked strong with some players back from injury. Anticipation was high but Aloysius were determined and we struggled to gain the ascendency. After some sustained pressure on their line Liam Slabber darted over for a try out wide. Aloysius came back hard to camp on our line. From a scrum they simply passed along their backline and crossed for the easiest of tries as we missed a tackle. The scores were tied up at 5-5. Strong running saw us break their line a number of times but a lack of support and clear communication meant the attack broke down; we must play closer in support of the ball carrier in order to maintain possession and pressure. Eventually, Gideon Kelly scored off a bullocking run. Defence was better but we still leave the referee with too many opportunities to intervene; we need to be more accurate in our control of the ball. Logan s fitness saw him heavily involved in the ruck and Alex Antonelli s evasive running cut up the defence.

We will need closer support for the ball carrier and better body height if we are to beat Barker this week. S. Pardey 4th XV 25:20 Win The Cranbrook 4ths were the first team on the board again this week and are making a habit of starting well. Fielding our strongest team yet there was always going to be plenty of points in us. The big question was whether or not we could limit the points against us, being a team that still needs more time together and match experience. The North and Nation centre pairing proved extremely difficult to handle on the back of good direction and service from Savvas. Muldoon was solid at the back and made plenty of metres from the opportunities he had and it was pleasing to see our wingers get more involved this week too. Benefitting from forwards with higher grade experience like Malpass, Hootman and Bain our engine room also stepped up and we recycled more possession, capitalising on many of our opportunities with the ball. Some strong carries from the likes of Worthington and Bouckley at times took some much needed pressure of our backline.

It turned out to be a close and entertaining fixture that was only decided by a Finn Morison buzzer beater in the corner. Some of the finer points of Rugby, managing frustration and our ability to concentrate for longer periods still need improving but all in all it was a well-deserved and enjoyable win. C. Douglass 16A 0:31 Loss Cranbrook started off well against St Aloysius, holding them out in defence for quite some time as well as showing some promising passages with the ball. Aloysius scored a try through the middle of the defence which effected our body language and unfortunately our attitude in the second half was not as it should be as Aloysius scored several more tries. On a positive note, there were some outstanding individual defensive efforts from Oscar May, Jonny Vicars and Tim White which gives us hope as we head back to Hordern oval to take on Barker in Round 3. Ben Ritchie 16B 15:0 Win The 16Bs continued their winning ways with a comprehensive victory against St Aloysius. The boys showed good attacking structure in the first half with their system proving difficult to defend against as we dominated in attack. A first half double to George Dovellos put us in a good position however a lack of discipline at the breakdown gave Aloysius plenty of ball but some outstanding defence repelled these attacks before Harry Shutes scored a try in the final stages of the game. We will take a lot of confidence from this performance into our Round 3 fixture against Barker College. Elias Green 15A 19:5 Win The Aloysius kickoff signalled the start of the game and the boys knew that a win wasn t going to come easily.

After some very strong defence followed by relentless attack Max Epstein managed to score the first try of the game, diving heroically over the Aloysius defence. Aloysius didn t give up and almost managed to score again in the final minutes of the half, if not for another of Max Epstein s try-saving master pieces. After a firm talking-to, the boys went back out with renewed energy and after holding Aloysius off the line for a long time with some more fantastic goal line defence, Oliver Lamens caught an intercept and ran 80 metres to score under the posts.

This try was closely followed by Peter North scoring yet another try. Both were converted by Jude Gibbs who had recently returned from injury. The boys persisted with more strong defence, unfortunately we couldn t hold them off and they scored with 2 minutes remaining. All in all, a great game, final score 19-5 victory to Cranbrook. P. Tasker

15B 41:5 Win The 15Bs started their season on a high beating Knox at Knox last week and wanted to continue their momentum with a good win against Aloysius. We started well with the first try coming in the first 5 minutes but Aloysius came back to make it level at five all.

But we were slowly able to keep possession and pile on the points in the second half thanks to some great finishing from the backs, this led to a 41-5 win which sees us 2 from 2 in the CAS season 15C 0:58 Loss The Cranbrook 15C s team came out looking for a win after last week s excellent performance. However, due to SCEGGS Redland s large, hard running players, and an effective use of a well reserved squad, our defence let us down. The opposition ran through us on several occasions and generally dominated the game in both attack and defence. Although there was some great team work from Cranbrook, we were just not strong enough and went down 58 nil. A. Horth 14A 12:36 Loss The 14A s faced Aloysius at Hordern on Saturday morning and despite some injuries the team exploded from the start, playing well and holding territory and position. Unfortunately, Aloysius got away with 2 easy unconverted tries in the first half but Cranbrook were still in it. Lots of hard running from Peter Masselos ferociously forcing his way down field saw him come away with 2 tries, one of which was converted by William Clunies-Ross. The boys gave it their all with Toby May ripping up the field and coming off with a fractured wrist. At the end of the day Aloysius proved too strong with the end score We look forward to a return fixture in the later rounds. Saxon Purcell 14B 17:34 Loss The B s started slowly, letting the opposition score twice and convert once before we had got any points on the board. But with some strong efforts from the forwards, and the backs getting their act together, we were able to get Henry Martin across the line to score the first points for us. From there we started to show some heart to get us to 19 to 17 Aloysius s way with help from another try from Henry and Will Suriano and a kick from Rex. Unfortunately, our fitness was our downfall, having a further 3 tries against us finalising the score at 34 to 17. Our fitness and scrums are some things to work on as well as the backs scanning more in order to sort out our numbers in defence. The boys put a good effort in but in the end we lost to the better team on the day. Angus Wilson

13A 46:5 Win The 13As played some fantastic attacking rugby to run out comprehensive victors against St Aloysius at Primrose Park. The start of the game saw Cranbrook hold out Aloysius with some good line speed coupled with some effective tackling. Cranbrook got their attack together shortly after and started to play some attacking rugby which led to several tries in the first half.

The second half saw much of the same with Cranbrook overpowering the Aloysius defence as well as making some dominant tackles. It was our best performance of the season and something we will look to build upon at training this week in preparation for our game against Barker. Freddie Walton 13B 10:38 Loss The 13Bs played at home against Riverview over the weekend. The end result being a loss. Riverview had a very organised and explosive team, who dominated much of the game. The Cranbrook boys are yet to get their first win after the preseason, however, spirits are high and we are ready to train hard in preparation for Barker at home next weekend. The try scorers were Caspar Crowe and Kiran Siva capitalising on well-rehearsed back-line moves. Kiran Siva 13C 17:12 Win This weekend the 13Cs recorded a good victory. Our defence was strong but our attack wasn't as good as it could be and is an area we need to work on going forward. With the help of Alfie Dumas and Alfie Ashton our team really excelled. I think we could work on ball placement to get the game going faster. We look forward to our game against Barker College this weekend. Dom Spillane

13D 41:27 Win The 13D s had a high scoring game against Riverview and came out victorious It was a team effort from the boys, with James Sperling and Kiran Siva both picking up two tries each. Henry Docker, Jesse Sassoon and Caspar Crowe also picking up one try each. James Sperling followed an excellent performance by adding a further 3 goals to the tally. Cranbrook conceded a couple of early tries, followed by a dominant period by the running forwards for much of the game. However, Riverview struck back in the last 10 minutes but the Cranbrook boys were able to hold on and win the game. M. Fanning 12A 0:62 Loss It was a tough day at the office for the Cranbrook 12A s on Saturday 14th May. We struggled to put the strong Scots ball runners to ground but it was a good lesson in playing tough rugby. We held our structure well and are continually improving our skill set. Effort and time will see us reach our short and long term goals. The boys are looking forward to another tough week of training and a rematch with Shore this weekend. M. Grice 12B 12:29 Loss The 12B s played a tough game against Scots at Christison Park on Saturday 14th May. The 12B s structure is continuing to improve and we played more effectively as a team. Our biggest focus now is on making consistent strong tackles against our opposition. This area is showing development, however, Scots were able to make some quick breaks and get some early tries on the board. Cranbrook continued to put in a solid effort throughout the entire game resulting in two tries. This week we will focus again on our tackling at training before our next game. E. Hewett 11A 7:22 Loss Some good work early on from the forwards saw us come out fighting against Scots after we were weak over the ball in our previous game. This wasn t enough to stop them from scoring fairly early on in the corner after we committed too many to the breakdown. After this we responded really well, and digging deep this time in defence saw Danny Sassoon (who had his best game in a Cranbrook shirt) get an intercept, which Stef Ferster supported and we took the lead 7-5. The 2nd half was again evenly contested until the final 8 minutes when we started to creep offside and conceded a few late tries. Some good lessons to learn and both sides tackled very well throughout the game. Another tough test awaits us next week against Riverview. M. Allen-Waters 11B 0:37 Loss The 11B's showed some passages of excellent rugby at the start and towards the back end of the game. The boys look excellent with ball in hand however fail to retain possession because of some lackadaisical coverage come ruck time. Brooklyn Teixera had some barnstorming

charges while Nicholas Renwood was fantastic in defence. A focus on this week training will be body height come breakdown and working hard in defence to tie in after the ball has passed. Some homework this week is for the boys to sit down with their parents and watch a couple of rugby games. M. Allen-Waters 10A 5:34 Loss Heading into their first home fixture, the 10A s were excited. After watching their mates in the B s edge over the line for their first win of the season, the A s were eager to put in a strong performance. The effort and commitment displayed by the boys was a vast improvement from the previous two weeks. Unfortunately, these efforts were not enough to combat a strong Mosman team. Mention must go to Will Kimberley and Edward Hambly for their strong attacking performance. J. Cohen

10B 38:37 Win The 10B s registered their first win of the season with a thrilling victory over Mosman. The B s started slow both in attack and defence. After giving up an early lead, the B s decided to show a glimpse of what they are truly capable of. Roy Lumsden led the defence with some crunching tackles, while Charlie Shmaehling and Luca Karsay headed up the attack. Hugo Ehrlich had a blinder of a game crossing the line three times, including the final try which gave Jamie Toll the opportunity to kick a conversion for the win. Unaware of the importance of the kick, Jamie stepped up and kicked the ball over with ease. Well done to the 10B s! J. Cohen 10C 5:5 Draw and 5:35 Loss The 10C s enjoyed another weekend of highly competitive 7 s rugby. We displayed some excellent skills in both attack and defence in our 5 all draw against Trinity. We then faced up against local rivals Scots who proved too physically dominant for our boys to handle, forcing us to a 35-5 loss at full time. Special mention must go to William Colquhoun for 2 tackles and William Van der Byl for some fine solo runs. 9A 20:30 Loss It was a beautiful Hordern Oval morning which greeted the U9s as they took on Mosman Prep. The Cranbrook boys played a disciplined well-structured first half of rugby to take the lead against Mosman.

However, in the second half they dropped off far too many tackles against some talented Mosman runners giving the visitors a deserved win. C. English 9B 35:35 Draw The B team played very well against Mosman B s, both sides enjoying free-flowing rugby and scoring seven tries apiece. The B team now need to work hard on their defence their individual tackling in-particular.

They will be playing Kings this Saturday who will no doubt be seeking revenge after their last meeting. C. English

Message from the Cranbrook Rugby Club Cranbrook Rugby Contribution 2016 Please support Cranbrook Rugby via a contribution of $200, $300, $500, $1000 or $ Dear Cranbrook Rugby Community and Friends On behalf of the Cranbrook Rugby Club (CRC) we again thank you for your continuing support and commitment to our mission to assist in the development of a quality, world class schoolboy rugby programme for Cranbrook. As a result of the generous support from the majority of rugby families and the wider Cranbrook Rugby Community, the CRC has been able to make significant progress towards a permanent culture change, for the benefit of all our boys. We invite you to participate again in In 2015, your generous assistance through the enormously successful Rugby Lunch, tax effective voluntary contributions and support for the BBQ and Rotunda on match days, enabled the CRC to the fund a $120,000 capital spend on strength and conditioning equipment for all Senior School boys in all sports. A further $45,000 was spent on specialist coaching and state of the art video analysis. Other investment included: tour support, the successful trial of lighting on Hordern Oval, leadership, safety and nutrition education and a range of initiatives to encourage participation, particularly for our Junior School boys. Your support for these efforts have been achieved in partnership with the School and with the blessing of the Council. Furthermore, the School s commitment is evidenced with the appointment of two, full time personal trainers to ensure the strength and conditioning facility is available 52 weeks a year and with the appointment of a Director of Athletes to augment the credentialed rugby people, already on the Senior Executive team. We continue to thank the Cranbrook Rugby Founders for their service and financial support but encourage all families and the wider community to contribute again to ensure our funding model is equitable, sustainable and efficient. Thank you also for the support of those who have been able to secure a table at the sold out 2016 Cranbrook Rugby lunch. We are confident that the financial success of the lunch and each family s generosity today in making their 2016 tax effective contribution will secure our programmes into the future and enable the CRC to organise Cranbrook Rugby community events that are free, subsidised or offered on a modest cost recovery basis. Thank you for your continuing support and generosity. Please make your voluntary contribution via :
