Basketball 1st BGS 52 defeated Scotch College 50 BGS notch 1 st win in 1 st team competition. The 1 st Basketball team played Scotch College at MSAC on Saturday morning. After a great week of training, the team was determined to put in a big effort and improve on the previous week s performances. Scotch got the advantage early in the first quarter, shooting the ball well and were able to get to the basket with relative ease. Max Benier opened the scoring for BGS, and Hayden Mitchell continued his good form, controlling the floor and making some important baskets. Late in the quarter, Ben Graham had a massive three point play, and Brad Hickey made a big basket to keep us within range, down by 3 points at the quarter time break. After a few adjustments at the break, BGS began to push the ball really well and Hayden Mitchell was able to get to the basket a number of times in transition. Two big threes from James Clark and Ben Graham allowed the scoring to flow more freely and we stayed with Scotch, down 4 at the main break.
With Mr Featherston watching on, the third quarter from BGS was one of the best quarters of basketball we had played in the last two seasons since making the step up into the APS 1 st Division. Max Benier was inspirational with his efforts, attacking the basket and proving a nightmare to guard. Jimmy Gui stepped in and made a massive 3, and Sam Fitzgerald was able to hit some of his trademark running jump shots. As well as scoring freely, BGS was able to restrict Scotch s scoring and take the lead for the first time in the game, going into the final break up by 7 points. The final quarter was an inspired effort from BGS, and 8 minutes of basketball never felt to go for so long. Everything the boys had learned from previous games was put into action and the team was determined not to let this game slip. Hayden Mitchell continued to lead from the front, and Max Benier found himself at the basket late in the game making a huge play to put us up by 3. With only seconds left, Scotch made 1 of 2 free throws to make it a 2 point game, and were forced to play the foul game. The team worked the clock to our advantage and hold on for a massive 2 point win our first ever win in the APS 1 st Division. The emotion from the boys after the game demonstrated how much this win meant for the team. They have shown true Tonner spirit - sticking together and working hard to improve. This was a game we ll all remember!
Basketball 7A BGS 30 defeated by Scotch College 36 The Year 7A Basketballers came into the game against Scotch College confident after a big winner in round 1, but unfortunately from the first shot of the game it was clear that luck was not on our side this week. The boys fought hard in the first half, taking all the right shots, but unfortunately, they were just not dropping and Scotch were making the most of it. Campbell Yeo and Ryan Williams fought hard inside for rebounds in the first half, and despite a bad back, Mitch Terry continued from last week being strong inside when the boys really needed it. Heading into half time the boys trailed by 7 points but were confident that they were not out of it. The second half saw Connor Harding and Jack Giblin step up and challenge Scotch with some quick points, and the defensive efforts of Nick McCluskey and Chris Tomaras saw some quick turnovers and the margin narrowed to just three points late in the game. With Billy Morris and Nick Volpe providing fresh legs off the bench, the boys really lifted in the final minutes and looked like they were going to run over the top of Scotch, however the boys ran out of time, going down by 6 points in the end. Whilst we didn t come away with the win, there was plenty of positives to take away from the game, and I look forward to seeing the boys bounce back next week. Basketball 7B BGS 53 defeated Carey 19 Coming off a strong first game the BGS 7Bs were confident heading into our game with Carey this week. James Huang and Lachlan Molloy lead from the front with their relentless pressure on the ball carrier and their speed on the fast break to start the game. Hunter Absalom was strong inside the key with some big rebounds, and Jimmy Watkins gave out some beautiful assists as BGS lead at half time. Terrance Wang came out in the second half with an aggressive mindset as he drove to the ring with ease. Mack Anderson continued his impressive offensive play showing that he can score in a variety of ways, and Cooper Beasley worked his way into the game with a few steals and passes to allow easy baskets for his teammates. A very unselfish BGS side finished winners by 34 points. Thanks to all the parents who came out to support the boys.
Basketball 7D BGS 5 defeated by St Kevins 31 The 7D boys met a challenging opponent in St Kevin's on Saturday May 5, struggling to adapt to the intense pressure that they were faced with. After gaining their feet late in the first half the BGS boys started to shift the momentum in their own favour, putting together several good plays and making it on the scoreboard. Although the damage was already done from the early minutes of the game, all of the boys ran hard until the final whistle and should be commended for their willingness to work hard throughout the entirety of the game. Basketball 8A The year 8As had a very solid win on Saturday, After a slow first half, we took control of the game by playing excellent defence and rebounding well. Will Field made some big shots to put us in the lead and Sam Sweet controlled the ball well all game. Basketball 8B This week the 8Bs played in their second game of basketball. Coming off a successful first game against St Kevins the boys look to back up their performance against an equally challenging Wesley side. The beginning of the game was tight as both teams were having their way on offence. However, from the 10-minute mark of the first half, the year 8s lifted their game to another level. Both Lexi Wang and Justin Jin stood out on the defensive end, as they were able to get steals and pass the ball ahead for fast break layups. Charlie Morgan and Jerry Chens' lightning speed and ability to finish at the basket further helped the team to quickly put up points as the 8Bs took down Wesley by over 20 points Soccer 1st BGS 4 defeated by Scotch College 2 After a great win against Caulfield last Saturday the boys were keen to continue to improve against Scotch. From the outset however, Scotch had us on the backfoot; they controlled possession as we sat off them and allowed them to run at our midfield. Whilst we tried to organize ourselves structurally we failed to follow our game plan of pressing their quick and talented midfield and as such allowed them to score twice and control the game. Halftime allowed us to regroup and we came out with greater intent. We pressed as per our game strategy and created turnovers in our attacking third; this allowed us to pull a goal back and create more pressure. A defensive error cost us a penalty and whilst we got back to 4-2, we couldn t regain our composure and dropped a game we should have at least halved. Whilst our work rate in the second half was terrific as was our intent, focus and following roles and gameplans must be achieved over the full match if we are to continue our improvement.
Soccer 2 nds BGS 4 defeated Scotch College 2 After conceding in the opening 20 seconds of the match, the boys bounced back to produce another impressive performance against a determined Scotch team. Goals to Asher Yu, Thomas Elliot, Aidan Nicholls and Anton Derevianko sealed the 4-2 victory, making it back-to-back wins for the squad. The boys will be looking for more goals again next week as they try to start the season off with three straight wins. Soccer 10A BGS 1 defeated by Scotch College 4 The 10A team travelled to Scotch for the second game of this year s season, after coming off the back of a 1-0 win against Caulfield spirits were high going into Saturday s game. Unfortunately the boys hard work and commitment were not enough to secure the win as the team fell short, losing 4-1. Tommy Colaci was the only scorer for Brighton Grammar, with a long ranged free kick. Unfortunately BGS missed a few scoring opportunities, Scotch where extremely clinical, scoring from most of the good scoring opportunities that they had. The boys panicked with their passes which scotch took advantage of it and claimed possession off of these dodgy passes. The boys did improve going into the second half with Mr. Stewart telling us how to improve our play by holding on to possession as much as possible, as well as closing down the opposition and sending the ball wide, once we won possession. Overall BGS were unlucky on the day and scotch were able to take advantage of that. Soccer 7B BGS 1 defeated by Xavier 5 Goal Scorer: Julius BGS 7Bs were looking to change their luck and get a win in the second game of the season. Unfortunately, for the boys they were up against another A team. Not discouraged they put up a valiant effort holding them back only scoring off our mistakes. Soccer 7C BGS 1 defeated by Scotch College 3 Goal Scorer: Zac The boys from Brighton played their first home game of the season at Firbank on Saturday against Scotch. After last week s defeat, BGS 7Cs were ready to fight back and show off their skills. The numbers were low however, that didn t stop BGS from giving their best and challenging Scotch to an impressive game. BGS played incredibly well as a team and they worked together to maintain their position and possession. Similar to last week s game against Caulfield, the second half brought a much better performance. Four shots on goal,
outstanding pressure and strategic passing all helped the BGS boys dominate the rest of the game. Overall, an awesome effort from the boys who are already proving their skills and cohesion as a team. Soccer 8B BGS 12 defeated Haileybury 1 The 8b soccer team came into round 2 fresh off a bye in round 1, the boys were optimistic about the potential for a result against a Haileybury side that beat us last year 1-0. The boys arrived at 9:00am at the Pen-Y-Bryn oval, Firbank and were set for a big result. The game started at 9:45 and a tonners goal came straight away from a deflected cross that was stuck in by a Haileybury defender. Soon after Haileybury levelled the score from a well taken goal. After that though it was all Brighton with the score at half time being 8-1, the half finished with a well taken finish from the penalty spot by Liam Coleman our Goalkeeper. The second half was also dominated by the tonners who added a further 4 goals, with the final score being 12-1 to Brighton Grammar. The boys managed to null any second half attacks from haileybury, Milo lade, Jack Duckinson and Ben Akinci and put in great performances and tackles at the back to give the opposition no hope. The goal scorers were Henry Lowenstein 2, Henry Mitrevski 2, Zach Carr, Matthew Hill, Sam Vakirtzis, Liam Coleman, Elijah Akinci 2 and Josh Foulds Soccer 8C BGS 4 defeated Caulfield Grammar -WH 2 Goal Scorers: Marcus Sorensen 3, Binnie 1 Best Players: Marcus Sorensen- great effort running box to box all day long and rewarded on the scoreboard Cameron McIntyre- Great defensive work rate providing stability and structure in the defense An early 8:30am game in Wheelers Hill proved a bit too early for some boys, as only 9 out of the 16 boys arrived on time. From the moment of kick off the boys were out numbered and suffered because of this on the scoreboard. However, relentless pressure and a few late arrivals allowed the boys to fight back closing the half at 2-2. With a full team and some minor changes to the team, the boys showed great energy in the second half hitting the lead, with the help of 2 goals from Marcus. The second game of the season finished 4-2, a testament to the boys resilience and great teamwork. Now with two wins out of two games, the boys have set an ambitious goal to finish the year undefeated.
Soccer 9C BGS 4 defeated Scotch College 0 Goal Scorers: Jules, James, Marcus, Juan Following on from our first win of the season, the boys arrived at the Mitchell filled with confidence. We kicked on from where we left off last week as we dominated possession and created several early chances. Jet was lively upfront as he and was unlucky not to bag himself a goal. In the end, Jules opened the scoring and James neatly tucked a second away to go into the break 2-0 up. We were our own worst enemy in front of goal as we squandered a few chances, but in the end, a goal to Marcus and another to Juan from indirect free-kicks put the game to bed. Props to the back four as well as Nathan who held tight to earn our first clean sheet of the season. Soccer 10C BGS 3 defeated Xavier College 1 Best Players: Keir Canwell, Carl Rumbens, Will Fry, Lachlan Wake After an 11-0 win to start the season, the team came into the second game of the year with plenty of confidence. Before the game, we knew it was important to be wary of complacency. It was important to work hard for the win. We did not want to take anything for granted, especially considering the good standard of opposition usually offered by Xavier. We got off to a great start, scoring within the first few minutes. Keir Canwell launched a well-placed long-range effort from outside the box into the top corner of the net. Xavier responded well after the first goal, playing with plenty of physicality and intensity. The first half was an arm wrestle, but the boys stood up to the challenge well. All around the ground, we didn't stop competing, and eventually our endeavor paid off with a deflected own goal that gave us a 2-0 lead at half time. The second half continued to be very physical and very competitive. Xavier had us pinned back in our defensive half for most of the early stages, but thanks to good goalkeeping from Will Fry and good solidity in defense from the like of Carl Rumbens and Lachie Wake, Xavier couldn't get the reward on the scoreboard. Mid-way through the second half, they did break through, scoring from a corner that found a man at the back post for a tap in. It didn't take long for a Brighton response. Carl Rumbens moved back into midfield and fired in a driven shot that had too much power for the goalkeeper. The lads then took the pace out of the game and secured the victory, playing conservatively and taking plenty of time in their decision making, a good sign of maturity. Overall, we can be pleased with how hard we worked to get the win. A focus for the future will be utilising the width of the field more to create chances, but in terms of application, effort and desire, I can't fault the team today.
