BGS SENIOR SCHOOL SPORTS REPORTS SATURDAY 16 th July AFL 1STS BGS DEF CAREY BEST: Williams, Jarnestrom, McGrath, Murray, Zimmerman, Hayes, Murphy Mastronammo Lohan Yorgey GOALS: Matsronammo 5 Hayes 5 McGrath 3 Williams 2 Freeman 2 Murray 1 Phillips 1 Montanaro 1 Jarnestrom 1 Farrell 1 Yorgey 1 With 2 games to go BGS 1 st XVIII consolidated its position on top of the APS ladder with an emphatic performance against the young and developing Carey Grammar. BGS remain undefeated on top of the ladder but face two tough teams in the last two rounds in HY (away) and STKC (home) which will conclude the season. BGS must win one of these games to claim the premiership outright. HOWEVER, all our thoughts are with the Larkworthy family on the passing of a special BGS person in Matt Larkworthy. Our thoughts are with Kirsty and the boys on this very sad occasion 2NDS BGS DEF GEELONG COLLEGE Goals: E. Evans 3, A. Hoar 2, T. Burns 2, M. Gray, B. Durkin, G. Katasaras, B. Koronoth Best: C. Hicks, B. Koronoth, B. Durkin, S. Murray, F. Campigli, E. Evans BGS came up against a much stronger GCS on Saturday. The last time we played GCS, the boys put in strong performance and got the win. This time round GCS were stronger with a few of their 1 st XVIII players getting some game time in the 2nds, so we knew it was going to take a much bigger effort to win the game. The boys got off to a flying start, banging 5 goals in the first quarter and playing some great team footy. The effort was spot on and our skills were fantastic. The 2 nd quarter was a bit different, to GCS credit, they came out much harder and we didn t match that dropped off in the effort department. In terms of the scoreboard we were able to maintain our 5-goal lead, but it felt like GCS were very much in the game. The second half was much better, we got back to playing our brand of footy, being strong in the contest and using our skills get through GCS defence. GCS fought really hard after quarter time and made us work for everything. We were able to add to our lead throughout the second half and come away with a 49 point win. Credit to our back 6 for being strong all day when the pressure was on us a group. With a couple of games to go, it would be great to come away with 2 wins and finish the season on a strong note. Would like to thank all the students that helped out on game day, its much appreciated. 3RDS BGS DEF BY XAVIER Best: Micari, Parsons, Capp, Harris. It s hard to know why we started so badly but I would suggest that not training for over a month is probably why. Things got a little better in the 2 nd half but the game was long gone by then. Joe Micari took many marks on the last line of defence and held up well under the constant Xavier forward forays, as did Rob Capp. Only one more match let s bounce back against Caulfield this weekend and play the way we want to hard over the footy and running to help our teammates. 10A BGS DEF CAREY The boys had fantastic turnaround from a big loss the last time we played Carey. It was great to have Brad Hickey and Harry Reynolds back in
the team after returning from injury. Harry dominated the game without taking a mark or laying any tackle at the request of his Mum. David Segar, Ben Branson, Flynn Wood and Jake Turner were all great through the midfield and our backline lead by Luke Ianuali rebounded the ball like a sling shot from defence and set up multiple forward attacks. Matt Nose and Cam Robertson were solid down forward with Matt s goal from outside 40m a beauty! Looking forward to backing up this strong result next week against Haileybury! 10B BGS DEF BY XAVIER Goals: T. Whitson 2, N. Adams 1, W. Speyer 1, M. Leadbeater 1. After a disappointing end to last term for the 10B's travelled to Xavier College to try and get back onto the winners list. It would prove to be hard before the game even started, with limited numbers meaning it would be hard to compete against a full strength Xavier team. The first half showed this, with their run over the top of us a result of their extra numbers. The second half didn't turn out much better than the first, with Xavier piling scores up on the scoreboard to comfortably come out winners. Special thanks to Finn Parker for coming down and helping out despite his injury. 9A BGS DEF BY SCOTCH It was a day to forget for the 9A s as we were beaten comfortably by a stronger and bigger Scotch College outfit. Although the score line does not give us justice our boys were simply a step behind our opposition and allowed them to score easily when it when into their forward half. Credit to our boys who kept persisting up until the final siren however it just wasn t our day, as we couldn t seem to kick it through the big posts. We move on and this week we venture out to Haileybury looking for payback as they knocked us off by 10 points earlier in the year. With two games remaining the boys are confident that we can finish with two wins and end our season on a high. 9B BGS DEF BY XAVIER 84 Best: Hick, Graham, Sorensen, Field It was an extremely tough day for the boys against Xavier this week as it reflected on the scoreboard. To the lads credit they stuck with it the whole game and did not drop their heads for a second. With less than 10 forward entries for the day it was always going to be hard to hit the scoreboard and even tougher to compete overall. The stand out performers for the day were Hick, who never stopped trying and held the back 6 together with Benny Graham. Luke Sorensen and Matt Field were also standouts in the middle, to little avail. BASKETBALL 2NDS BGS DEF BY GEELONG COLLEGE BGS travelled to Geelong College on Saturday morning, in what was our first game away from MSAC. The boys arrived ready to take on the undefeated team from Geelong after listening to some inspiring playlists from Tyler Jackson the whole trip. It was clear this was going to be a close game, with both teams matching up well. GGS jumped out to an early lead, managing to get to the basket and hit some key outside baskets. Although the team was frustrated with some calls that didn t go our way, BGS was able to stick with Geelong through some good team play, and was only down 4 points at half time. Sasha Parsons (14 points) lead the scoring for BGS, hitting some big 3 s, and was able to find gaps through the Geelong defence. Ben De Worsop (6 points) also used his height inside and contributed some important baskets. Down by 5 points in the dying minutes of the game, Tyler Jackson (5 points) was fouled taking a 3, and was able to convert two free throws to make it a 3 point game. Playing the foul game, GGS was sent to the line and missed both free throws. A rebound would provide one last opportunity to score, but unfortunately we were unable to secure the ball, which meant we need to foul again and send Geelong back to the foul line, where they score one of two but put the game out of reach. It's never easy losing close games especially with a long drive ahead, but the traditional Maccas stop on the way home and a change in playlists softened the loss. 5THS BGS DEF BY ST KEVINS We had our backs against the wall from the outset - no preparatory training this week and only five players on the court at the jump. Despite this, the first few minutes were a fairly even affair; no score on the board for either side. Both teams put up a solid defence but frustratingly,
our shots weren't dropping. Fortunately, neither were theirs. The lack of subs lead to rather scrambly defence and Matt's attempts to put a brake on St Kevin's driving to the hoop led to a full set of personal fouls and a hasty departure from the court. However, appearing from nowhere like Sansa Stark at the Battle of the Bastards, Dim turned up just in time to turn the tide of battle. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough and at half-time the board read 8:15 in Skevvie's favour. A challenge was laid down by the coach. An expectation that the Tonners would not capitulate, but rather use the deficit as motivation to dig deep and give more, that little bit extra that makes the difference. And what a difference it made. Brighton Grammar planted itself like a tree - we were not going to bend or break. A few standout moments defined the next extended passage of play - Dane's silky smooth hookshot layup, the charging foul Dim drew from an overly zealous opponent and Jake's relentless pressure in defence. Our shots started dropping and by the time the next time-out was called, we had amassed 8 points and St Kevin's only 2 - the strategy of pushing into the key was working; as planned, we were drawing the fouls and going to the line. Unfortunately, not all our set shots were on target, and St Kevin's went 4 up in the dying minutes of the game. Defiant, we scraped it back, showing great discipline as we went into the final minute. It was an arm wrestle. But we didn't panic. With 30 seconds left, we took possession and waited for the right moment to move. With 10 seconds left, Josh drove, and met some opposition on the way. He ended up on the floor and my heart ended up in my mouth. Confusion. Was it a foul on the shot? Would we go to the line with seconds to go? Unfortunately, the call did not go our way, and we lost by a single basket. Whilst that was cruelly disappointing - even an opposition parent said we deserved the win - this team should reflect back on this game with pride - they were inspiring. Every person lucky enough to see this clash walked away with a tremendous sense of respect for Brighton Grammar. And no other coach has been as proud of their team as I was of these six lads today. MVP: Jake Parker Josh M: 2 Jake Parker: 10 Dane: 2 Dimitri: 3 YEAR 10 BGS DEF BY ST KEVINS BGS began with just four players; however, the boys were unperturbed as they challenged St Kevins. In fact, mid-way through the first half, scores were even as Jimmy Gui (14 points) pushed the tempo and converted his opportunities. Mitchell Kelly (6 points), Liam McInerney (4 points) and Steven Sun all followed Gui s lead and the boys were only down 7 points at the end of the first half (12-19). Gordon Wang s arrival evened the numbers and with 12 minutes to go we were on the brink of an upset. But with St Kevins able to rotate a fresh five players every five minutes the boys began to fatigue. Expecting heads to go down, the BGS spirt would not be broken, and as a spectator it was an inspiring effort as the boys continued to push. The final score line did not do the boys effort justice. They should all be proud of the way they performed. YEAR 9 BGS DEF BY ST KEVINS With only four players this week, BGS were up against the odds; however, this did not mean a lack of effort. Callum McPeake (14 points) scored 10 strong first half points and collected more than a dozen rebounds, whilst Josh Sum (9 points) picked up the scoring inside. Jason Jin and Jevons Yu were the ultimate team players with their valiant team defence. In fact, expecting the boys to tire in the second half, we were only out-scored points, compared to in the first half. Just two games remain, but we need all boys to be in attendance, so that we can finish the season off strongly. It once again starts at training on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. HOCKEY 1STS BGS DREW WITH CAREY 3-3 After a long break for the semester one holidays, the 1 st Hockey team faced off against Carey for an intense game at home. The game started evenly with both sides competing fiercely for possession of the ball. After multiple close calls for scoring opportunities from both teams, it wasn t until James Dixon put away an impressive goal off a back stick slap which put the Tonners up 1-0 before the end of the first half. Coming back into the second half, the score was levelled early on by Carey only for us to retaliate with another goal deflected off Jerry Lee from a short corner flick from Jack Coleman. After another goal from Carey, we scored again from deflection by Nick Moran leaving the score at 3-2 with only minutes left in the second half. However, Carey were unfortunately able to capitalise with minutes remaining, putting another goal away and finishing the game at a tight 3-3 draw.
The MVP this week was given to Niklas Loycke after his, yet again, solid goalkeeping. Next week we face our biggest challenge yet against the current top team, Haileybury in the hopes of taking in another win and wiping them off the top of the ladder. 2NDS BGS DEF BY GEELONG COLLEGE 7-0 The Second XI Hockey team were outgunned by Geelong College s First XI team (they don t play in the First team comp) 7-0. It was only 1-0 at half time! This represents, on paper, a 1 goal improvement on our first meeting (8-0 at GC) but it was more than that. We played a riskier game, pushed players forward who might normally have a midfield role and pushed players into pivotal and/or defensive roles and gave them more responsibility. Nobody failed. Outplayed? Sure, but rest assured that our boys gave everything and played positive hockey to the bitter end. They were overrun and looked despondent for a patch in the second half but chose to lift and fight back, rather than give in meekly. The boys showed great character during and after the game. 9/10A BGS DEF BY CAREY 4-0 9/10B BGS DEF BY HAILEYBURY 2-0 This week was a disappointing week for the B s with only 3 boys attending the training and 6 boys at the game on time. Thanks to the sportsmanship of the Haileybury coach and team who not only gave us a player so we wouldn t have to forfeit but also allowed the refs to be biased in the game in an attempt to even the playing field as we started with 4 players less on the field. However although it was disappointing on the boys who didn t attend, the boys who did showed enthusiasm, spirit and courage who when offered the option to forfeit in playing a team with more than double the numbers, denied and didn t want to leave without putting up a fight truly embodied the values of the school. These boys had putt in 110% throughout the entire match never giving up and holding a strong defence. For a team of 7 who were able to hold of a team of 12 to only get two goals through is nothing less than extraordinary. Although less than half the team were on time for the match, the boys who were, were truly Brighton Grammar boys and hopefully some of their values will rub of onto the other boys! Lets hope for a better week this week. SOCCER 1ST XI BGS DEF BY CAREY 1-0 2NDS BGS DEF BY CAREY 2-1? 3RDS BGS DEF BY CGS 14-2 Best players: Xavier Pym, Angelo Lin, Cadeyrn Rattur A disappointing day begun with only 7 boys showing up for kickoff, with 3 more arriving through the game. We never really stood much chance against a fluent Caulfield outfit who easily completed passes and created countless chances. We managed to get a goal back late in the first half, but not before conceding 10 in a row. With only 2 weeks left now, the boys should keep their heads held high as, despite a severe lack of numbers, showed that they are able to move the ball around well at times. 4THS BGS DEF BY Wesley 9-0 The boys suffered a devastating 9-0 loss at the hands of Wesley College. It was disappointing to see the boys drop there heads so early in the game which made it hard for them to get motivated. There were some positives to take from the game as there were some good bursts of attacking play from Marcus Burnside and Karl Xu. 5THS 10A BGS DEF Carey 2-1 A tough game for the boys where our defensive structures were tested and we had to concentrate for the full 35 mins each way to ensure we got the win. The back 4 again were very solid and continue to structure us up well which is very important. Our last two matches are against strong opponents in Haileybury and St.Kevs so it is important we continue to get an even spread of contribution from all players.
10B BGS DEF BY Carey 6-1 After a holiday break the boys came out a bit rusty into the game and unfortunately we beaten by an impressive carey team. after going down 2-0 sorato goto finished well to make it 2-1, but the team went on to concede 2 more in the half. The second half was much improved from the boys with the midfield playing harder but unfortunately couldn t convert chances made. 10C BGS DEF BY Scotch 3-0 On Saturday the BGS 10C Soccer team lost to Scotch 3-0. While it was a good performance by BGS, it was unable to be reflected on the scoreboard. Best players were Ral St John, Simon Wang and Feilong Yun 9A BGS DEF BY SCOTCH 3-1 The BGS 9A boys travelled out to Scotch College this week after a nice 3 week break of school holidays. The boys were ready and eager for the arrival of the start of the game. At the start of the game possession was very even with both sides struggling to maintain control as high pressure tactics were being used by both sides. Scotch struck first blow with a powerful strike outside the box into the top right hand corner. BGS kept on fighting trying to take back control of the game but the boys spirits were lowered as Scotch scored another goal before half time. At the break the message for the boys was to 'maintain the pressure and achieve more shots now going downhill with the wind'. The boys began the second half with high intensity but were unable to hold the composure on the ball that was very much needed. Scotch struck again to make the score 3-0, but in the last 10mins of the game BGS scored from a beautiful cross from the wing with Lewis Panaouris to put the ball in the back of the net. The boys ended up losing 3-1 but never stopped trying, maintaining that high work rate. 9B BGS DEF BY WESLEY 7-0 With further overseas commitments contributing to a lack in numbers, the 9bs went to Glen waverly to face Wesley with just 9 men. Tim Krynski and Sam Haddon both helped out in goals while Johnson Shen, Max ashman and gordan Chen never gave up whilst being undermanned. We go into our last match in two weeks hoping for a full team and a big win! 9C BGS DEF BY MGS 8-0 On Saturday the boys travelled to Melbourne Grammar to play their game. Unfortunately, not everyone showed up to the line up and this made it difficult for us to have a real chance at beating our opposition. That being said individual performances have proven that 9C's have worked hard during training and its showing off in their performance on the field, Matthew Cook and Josh Williams showing great skill on the weekend. I know the boys have great skills and if we have a full team on the weekend the BGS 9C's would be a very hard team to beat. RUGBY 1STS BYE U/16 BGS DEF Ivanhoe 41-7 U/15 BGS DEF BY Marcellin 28-0
