AFL - 2 nd BGS defeated by Haileybury Goals: H. Rowell, M. Hanna, T. Whitson Best Players: J. Rowell, T. Mailing, J. Larkworthy, T. Bennett, W. Hughes BGS played against Haileybury in Keysbrough. The boys started pretty strong with the contested football and tackling being quite strong early. Unfortunately, we weren t able to sustain that as the game went on. Haileybury used the ground really well as well as being a lot cleaner by hand and foot. We tried hard for of the most, but just lacked the skills needed to play 2 nd XVIII football. Judd Rowell had another good game and continues to work hard for his team mates. Trent Mailing has gone into the ruck the last couple of games and has played really well. The boys are starting to find out that the standard of 2 nd XVIII is pretty good and if you make mistakes, teams will take advantage of that and hurt you on the scoreboard. We will continue to get better and train hard. Hopefully the boys can bounce back against what should be a strong St Kevins outfit. AFL 3 rd BGS defeated by Caulfield Grammar Best Players: Rathmayr, Mongey, Murphy, McAllister, Field. This game was always going to be a tough one, after many of our star players pulled out with illness, injury or another commitment. Those of us who turned up faced a Caulfield team full of players who have played 2nds and it showed early. They kicked 4 goals to none in the first quarter, which was disappointing because we just didn t play with our usual effort. Nik Rathmayr was probably the best player on the ground and Jake Mongey was superb but we didn t have the class to match them all over the ground. The 2 nd quarter was better we lifted our work rate and scored two goals to their three. Our forwards started marking and our midfield lifted too. Tom Murphy and Will McAllister were working so hard in defence, repelling many attacks. At halftime, we faced a decision go for the win or limit the damage. We chose the former and moved Lachy Hernadi from defence to attack, stopped playing an extra man behind the ball. In hindsight, this was a mistake. Nine goals to one in the 3 rd quarter was ugly. I was proud of our last quarter, scoring two goals to their four. The boys showed heart and pride.

AFL - 8A BGS defeated St. Kevins Goals: McCluskey 2, Mackenzie 1, Hope 1, Palillo 1, Bourke 1, Marriott 1, Heaton 1, Bowen 1 Best Players: Gilbert, Palillo, McCluskey, Hope, Campigli, MacKenzie, Watters, Jaric, Bourke, Draheim We started really well winning the ball from the middle and scored the first goal from the first 3 forward entries in the opening quarter. St Kevins had to reset their midfield and half back line with bigger bodies. We were evenly matched up when they ran through the midfield and kicked two goals. The Year 8 boys are very coachable and played with pride for the remainder of the game as we outsized and out classed them at the contested footy. The boys listen to instructions and often make the right decisions at the right time. We still need to develop effective skills under pressure. Our decision-making is very good but we often turned it over at important times in the game, and the better teams will make us pay for this. When we run, switch the play and keep the ball moving forward we are a really hard team to beat. Remember your body language and how you are perceived by your coaches, teammates, opposition and parents. How you present yourself physically sets the tone and high performance culture that this team has. Start preparing this week for Xavier, they will be coming after us! AFL - 8B BGS defeated by Scotch College Best Players: Tom Howden, Jackson McKenzie, Ryan McKenzie, Cooper Hollway, Aaron Mickelborough The Year 8B Brighton Grammar Football team had their first home game for the season, facing a tough Scotch College side. Without scoring a goal in the first two games, Mitch Ryan crummed a contest in the forward pocket, swung around onto his preferred right foot and snagged the 8B's first for the season. Despite our efforts, Scotch came back with a few quick goals, pushing their lead. The McKenzie brothers were at it again, winning contested ball, kicking well and making good decisions. The team was also led well by the Captain Tom Howden, who proved his skills and speed by bursting out of packs, and kicking truly on both feet. Half time the boys were losing, but the 3rd quarter fueled with adrenaline showed a lift from Aaron Mickelborough who would not give up, a great snap by Cooper Hollway for a goal, and a late goal by Jorge Houridis. The boys let some junk time goals in late by Scotch, who had a strong midfield group which led their team all day to a convincing win. The 8B's will go back to training to focus on mental fitness and accountability on the opposition.

AFL - 7B BGS defeated by St Kevins The boys had another chance to win their first game on the Crowther last week on a dark Friday arvo. George and Calvin had their chance at captaincy in the absence of Baz. The first qtr was not confidence boosting with Skevs getting a few early goals and not allowing us to get it out of their forward half. After qtr time though, the boys recovered decides straight after the break kicking it the wrong way from our first centre clearance and handing Skevs another goal, they fought back strongly getting the margin down to 10 points at 3 qtr time. This was helped through properly playing their position by setting up and not all following the ball at one time. Skevs kicked the first goal of the last qtr but Calvin got one back and with all the momentum in the last we unfortunately couldn t get it on the scoreboard. It was a gallant effort from the boys and hopefully we can get our first win against the Xavs this week. BASKETBALL 1 ST BGS 50 defeated by Wesley College 70 This week the 1 st Basketball team played Wesley College at MSAC. Coming off a disappointing loss against Melbourne Grammar last week, the boys were keen to put in a better performance. Wesley showed they had come to play in the first quarter, applying strong defensive pressure, and shooting the ball well. We struggled to execute in offence with only 8 first quarter points, allowing Wesley to take a 6 point lead into the break. Brad Hickey (7 points) led the way in the second quarter, stepping up the intensity and making some big plays. Unfortunately, we were unable to stop the outside shooting from Wesley, which allowed them to stretch their lead to 14 at the main break. The third quarter continued in the same fashion as the first, as we struggled to work defensive stops. Max Benier (4 points) was able to make a couple of mid-rage jump shots, and James Clark (5 points) fought hard, getting a number of offensive rebounds leading to scores. Down by 24 heading into the final quarter, we were determined to finish the game strongly, and work hard as a team to execute at both ends of the floor. Kareem Zecevic (7 points) was able to find some space on the baseline a couple of times, hitting some nice mid-range jump shots. Hayden Mitchell continued to work hard, forcing a number of steals and was strong at the basket.

Despite winning the fourth quarter, this result was a disappointing blow to the team as we had made good progress over the past couple of weeks. It s another learning experience as the team strives for consistency. BASKETBALL 2 nd BGS 26 defeated by Xavier 38 The seconds faced off against Xavier which started off as a well fought battle. Our defence was solid keeping them to 13 points in the first half. Unfortunately, Xavier s zone defence left us struggling to score. Going into the second half we also decided to run a zone defence, whilst having holes at the start it really started to prove effective mid-way through the second half. Our lack of effort in rebounding and our sloppy passes were no help at all as it allowed Xavier to score some easy points. Hopefully next week we are able to build on what we have learned provided that all the boys come to both trainings to improve on our overall game as a team. BASKETBALL 3 rd BGS 35 defeated Carey 28 On Saturday 19 May BGS thirds basketball took on Carey at home at 10:30! With a few late comers from both sides the match begun as a 4 V 4 which favored Brighton with our quick passing and speed across the court. The other half of Carey s team arrived 10 minutes into the game whilst only one more player did so for Brighton so 100% game time for all players this week. At the half BGS led As the second half went on, we began to run out of legs however, we were able to keep adding on a few points here and there and ended up coming up with our first victory of the season The boys have improved tenfold from the beginning of the season until now and are only going to keep getting better from here. BASKETBALL 9/10C BLUE BGS 17 defeated by Wesley College 38 It was a sunny day and the weather was cold. We went to Wesley College in Elsternwick. When we arrived we saw a big playground to practise basketball and was itching for a try. After we had some shots, the game started. The first half of the game, we got smash really hard. We got 2 points and they got 17 points. At halftime, Ms Piva fixed some problems in our Team and then we went on again. The difference this time was that we scored more points. The boys played so well in the second half; both teams only scored 13 points and was a very close game at this stage. We made amazing improvements to our game. At the end of the game, we lost 38 to 17. It is a fun game and we all enjoy it.

BASKETBALL 8B This week the 8Bs were faced with the challenge of playing Scotch at Scotch. Even before the game, the team was facing adversity, as the venue itself was a challenge to find. However with 10 minutes to spare all the players made it and were ready to take on an unknown Scotch team. At the beginning of the game, the boys came out flat, as the talk and defence was lacking in comparison to previous weeks. Despite our lethargic start, we were able to build a solid 10 point lead going into halftime. First-gamer Ethan Gendala showed no signs of his previous illness as he locked down the opposition on defence and was able to finish creatively at the rim for multiple buckets. Jerry Chen had a fantastic game as he dished out multiple assists for easy scores. Angus Elliot proved too tall a task for the opposition, as he was able to alter Scotch's shots and grab big rebounds against multiple opposition players. Charlie Morgan speed and ability to read the play also stood out as he led the team in scoring. The final score was as the 8B team has now moved to a 4-0 record. BASKETBALL - 7A Brighton Grammar 54 defeated Xavier Burke Hall 9 The Year 7 BGS boys were coming off a big win when they took on Xavier Burke Hall out at their home court on Saturday morning, and they were quick to continue from their good form from the week prior. Although missing a few players, the boys didn t let it stop them as they were quick to hit the score board with a great drive from Jack Giblin. The pressure up the court from Jack and Nick McCluskey and Chris Tomaras saw some quick turn overs and fast break points early, leading to Xavier calling for a time out to re-group. However, the BGS boys didn t let up after the short break, and Connor Harding was on fire from the three point line, hitting 3 threes in the first half and giving the boys a big half time lead. After half time the boys were called to pull their defence back over half court, however it didn t stop them with Billy Morris applying relentless defensive pressure and Campbell Yeo and Ryan Williams working tirelessly inside to bring in the rebounds. The second half also saw some great team work as the boys moved the ball around in offence in order to counteract a zone defence applied by Xavier. Heath Fulton saw himself on the end of a couple of great team efforts late in the game, nailing 2 quick shots in the dying minutes. Overall, the boys had another great win and was brilliant to see them all involved at both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. The boys will continue to work on ball movement at training this week as they become more familiar with how each other plays and look to next week to make it three in a row. BASKETBALL 7C BGS 51 defeated Caulfield Grammar 19 It was another great game this week with both teams playing a competitive game of basketball to the final whistle. We defeated Caulfield Grammar by an outstanding 32 points.

The boys got off to a flying start with Nick Smith scoring 10 points in the first 5 minutes of the game. We continued to pile on the baskets early in the first, however, at times we found ourselves forcing our shots. Our ball movement was our main focus last week and it was clear that we needed to discuss this again going into the halftime break. Not only was our scoring fantastic our defence was first class, as we pressured the ball handler and cut off the passing lanes. Credit must go to everyone as we only allowed Caulfield 8 points for the quarter. In the halftime break, we discussed our ball movement and how the easiest way to score is to move the ball around quickly, to spread the defence and to create wide-open shots. It was excellent to watch as a coach when the boys listen and take in your advice. The second half was an exceptional scoring display as the boys worked as a team to move the ball up the court and find open buckets. We had 8 different scorers for the half, with a massive total of 31 points and 51 for the game. Well done to all the boys for a fantastic game, make sure we get to training this week so we can keep improving and prepare for a tough game against Scotch next week. BASKETBALL 7D BGS 26 defeated Melbourne Grammar 24 The boys had a very hard fought game over the weekend and I would dare to say it was their best performance yet. All members of the 7d team played their role, which proved to be worth the win on the day. With many lead changes throughout the game, the two teams were evenly matched, providing for a very exciting brand of basketball however it was the Brighton boys that came to the party in the dying minutes of the second half to take charge with a two-point lead. Frantically defending to hold on to the game gave the team the win and all boys can hold their heads high for giving 100%. I commend the team and look forward to seeing further improvements next week. HOCKEY 1 st BGS 1 defeated by Wesley College 4 The match inaugurates with a very aggressive play from Wesley, which is thwarted by the spectacular Brighton defence. However, Brighton struggle to get the ball out of the defensive half due to the colossal press placing unyielding pressure on the Brighton defenders. Unfortunately, despite Brighton s tenacity, Wesley secure a goal off a strategic play. Brighton on the back-foot unfazed by their score deficit pull ahead to not concede for the rest of the half. Although they were, a goal down Brighton set up a penalty corner following a brilliant run up the field from Martin Kulesza and Zach Adam-Gedge, where Craig Marais slips a drag flick bottom right past the Wesley keeper. This lead however is short lasted as Wesley put Niklas Loycke to the test with plenty of shots due to a spread Brighton defence. Alas, after

saving innumerable shots Niklas let through three goals within a short span. With their heads held high Brighton, continue to fight making strong plays up the line from Lucas Pithe and Ewan Smith. However, after conceding one more goal the match comes to an end with a 5-1 Wesley victory, and Brighton having a strong idea on what they need to work on over the following bye week. HOCKEY 2 ND BGS 0 defeated by St Kevins 10 The Open boys played against an experienced St Kevins team on Sat. home at 9.10am. They applied pressure early playing hard for the first 10 minutes of the match. Matt Warman, Lucas, Peter Francis were standouts Peter providing great leadership. The team continues to work on their communication and physicality and are improving each week. Sadly, we were down 0-6 at the half and lost HOCKEY 9/10A BGS 2 defeated St Kevins 0 The Year 9/10A Hockey scored a memorable 2 0 win away to St Kevin s last Saturday. For many of these boys it was the first win that they had experienced in Secondary School hockey and the joy was palpable! These boys have a good measure of skill, speed, agility and perseverance but what they have lacked is the inner mongrel, that quality that results in self-belief, the confidence to take risks and know that mistakes are a part of growth, not something to fear. The boys were encouraged to take risks and attack the circle a minimum of three times in the first five minutes (as often as we normally do in an entire match). The boys exceeded this requirement and had many forward penetrations, exposing flaws in the SKC defence. At the other end of the ground the boys repelled many SKC attacks and as the team s confidence grew, the communication increased and the quality of passing and teamwork improved markedly. We went into half time 0-0. A few minor adjustments at half time and the boys were on fire. We earned two penalty corners, entered the circle repeatedly and eventually hit the backboard twice to run out 2 0 winners with goals to Patrick Gu and Ben Hildebrand-Neumann. ALL boys, however, played their part; indeed several boys played in unfamiliar positions and rose to meet the challenge. The level of team play was the best they have displayed all season and they should be pleased with their efforts.

HOCKEY 9/10C BGS 7 defeated Caulfield 2 It was a great game with the boys coming in with a great attitude and anting a win. Although the opponents weren t up to the level that we have played against in the past they still put up a fight and enabled the boys to try and implement structure and drills that we have worked on during trainings. Overall it was a good game with Jaxon scoring 3 goals, Yali with 2 goals and Frank and Hristos with a goal each. Outstanding performances were from Jaxon being top goal scorer for the match, Yali who not only got 2 goals but set up more than half of the teams goals and Ollie who was willing to step in as goal keeper. There were some stick skill errors and positioning issues however these can be worked on in training. It was a great game with some of the boys having their first win. Congrats on the win and lets hope for another in this week! RUGBY 1 ST BGS 5 defeated by St Kevins 48 BGS 1 st Rugby took on St Kevin s on the weekend. The first half was a well-fought battle, with St Kevin s getting a couple of break a ways to score 3 tries and convert one. Half time score The second half continued to challenge us and a try scored by Devon Nicholls gave us some points on the board. RUGBY 2 nd BGS 7 defeated by St Kevins 29 On Saturday 19/05/2018 the BGS Rugby second XV faced the St Kevin s second XV at their Heyington campus. The first half of the game saw a lot of good tackling and hard running from a BGS kit that was mainly out of position, and against a larger opponent. The scores at half time were 7-5 in BGS s favour. In the second half, unfortunately one of our players sustained an injury and we saw our lead become a 29-7 win to St Kevins. Even though the score line looked different, it was a good effort from the boys. The only try scorer for us was Jack Stewart whose try was converted by Charlie Hannah. Next week s game is against Marcellin. RUGBY - 9/10 BGS 10 defeated by St Kevins 26

The U16 Brighton Grammar rugby team arrived at St. Kevins ready for what we knew was to be one of the biggest games of the season. Fresh off a week of training in preparation for the match, the boys felt confident in the team and in their skills. The opening of the game saw a great deal of intensity and effort from the boys. Great runs made by Alec Ciciulla, Charlie Clark and Wei-yee Hall smashed through the St. Kevin s defence, then an amazing dive by our half-back, James Sherborne, saw us with the first try of the game. However, as the game progressed, St. Kevins began to break our defensive lines, and scored two tries, turning the score to Trailing behind did not dampen the teams spirits and the rest of the game was played with the same high intensity it started with. Flynn Dickson, Ethan Lovett and Frank Ralogaivau throwing themselves into tackles with no concern for their own safety, ensured that St. Kevins had a tough time in offence. Our forwards followed through on our game plan of pods and our backs followed through getting it out wide with the quick hands of Callum Stanford. Alec Ciciulla scored our second try for the game, putting us within two points of St. Kevins. However as the game drew to a close, St. Kevins proved to be a very good side and scored twice more against us. Although the final score showed St Kevin s, it doesn t properly display how close of a game it was and how well both teams fought. We look forward to our match against them next year, which will surely be another great game. SOCCER -2 nd BGS 5 defeated Haileybury 0 Goals: Aidan Nicholls 3, Lewis Panouris 1, Jasper Mutimer 1 The boys made it 4 wins in a row on Saturday morning against a somewhat determined Haileybury outfit. Two goals in the first half saw us well on the way to a comfortable victory, with chances to add more coming and going before the break. A hat trick by Aidan Nicholls set up the result, with Lewis Panouris and Jasper Mutimer adding adding another one each. The defence was as solid as ever when it came to keeping the opposition at bay, with playing out from the back becoming ever more present and well drilled week in week out. A Friday night game next week will be a refreshing change to what have been early Saturday mornings. SOCCER 10A BGS 0 defeated by Haileybury 2 Best Players: Nik, Hamish, Costa and Tommy Colaci Despite a sharp warm-up and the boys being seemingly focused on the job at hand, we started the game against Haileybury slowly. Haileybury piled on the pressure as a result and looked threatening. Soon after the start of the match Haileybury scored a soft goal, which

came from a scramble to clear the ball, an effort Thomas Balarbas could've done better with. We started to get a foothold in the game but couldn't assert any kind of control over the flow of the game. Haileybury scored their second in the first half as miscommunication from 2 Brighton boys lead to them picking up the ball and driving towards goal and scoring. Throughout the first half, we created a few chances, mainly through Tommy Colaci. The theme of the first half was a lack of concentration and poor reaction to losing the ball. At half time we addressed how we need to react to losing the ball and how we can use it better. The second half was much better and the boys worked for each other and controlled the half. Colaci hit the post and other chances went begging. Overall, the damage was done in the first half and we were unable to recover. The boys didn't adjust to the small pitch size which made playing flowing football difficult. The reaction at half time was pleasing but it shouldn't have to happen. SOCCER 10C BGS 6 defeated Scotch College 6 Goals: Cameron 1, Oscar 1, Marcus 3, James 1, Will 1 Best Players: Julian Svensen, Jack Longmire, Carl Rumbens, Keir Canwell The team started with only 9 players on the field due to a mix-up in regards to the start time. Despite the numerical disadvantage, we had most of the play early on, confining the 11 Scotch players to their own half. We had some late arrivals show early in the first half, and as soon as we were full strength, we started to capitalise on our superiority. Jules Svensen scored a great goal early on with a marauding run that started within our own half. Jules ignored the passing options and forged ahead with too much pace and confidence for the Scotch defence. Goals from Jack Longmire and Jules again gave us a 3-0 half time lead. At half time the message was to really press on in respect to how much intensity we brought to the second half. The second half saw us use our time better. We made better passing decisions, picking out teammates in good positions. We used width to create chances. The defensive pressure was much better too. We pushed up high, and won back possession in advanced areas. Scotch really struggled to create significant opportunities throughout the second half. This was due to good structure behind the ball from us, as well good pressure on the player with possession and his immediate options. It was a good team performance from us against weaker opposition. Julian Svensen scored three goals in a standout performance. Carl Rumbens also played his roles in midfield and defence very strongly. A job well done. The team has now won 4 in a row, a great start to the year. SOCCER 8A BGS 4 defeated St Kevins 1 Goals: Caile (2), Lane and Hudson.

The boys all played very well with effective possession and moved the ball all around the field, controlling the midfield and creating many opportunities to score. The boys conceded from a corner and we're 1-0 down at half time but came out with confidence in the second half. For 85% of the game I was very happy but towards the end it became a little sloppy but overall a good performance. SOCCER 8C BGS vs Melbourne Grammar Our first game on the hallowed Mitchell turf, the boys faced a strong MGS team. With a surprisingly strong turnout from the BGS boys, we were able to field a full team. As usual, the mighty 8C's started out very slow not able to capitalise on all opportunities. We finished the half with a 2 nil lead but with a plethora of issues. Making many adjustments going into the second half, the boys looked different. The passes had a bit more speed, the shots a bit more accurate and the communication a bit more loudly. The intensity and improvement from the boys translated on the scoreboard as we booted home 5 goals straight in the second half. Best- David: hard running all day long and his willingness to play all positions allowed him to dominate the game, contributing with assists and crucial stops all day Tim: playing predominantly in the defence, when he was given the opportunity to play midfield he took it with both hands providing strong running and great distribution Marcus: dominating upfront, he managed to score 3 goals with a sore leg. A true testament to his attacking mindset with the ball SOCCER 7A BGS 3 defeated by Xavier 4 Goals: Campbell (2), Seb (1) This week the 7A's ventured to Burke Hall to take on the traditionally strong Xavier. After a bye last weekend the boys were keen to get back into it and after a few strong weeks on the track we looked to implement our style and come away with a strong result. This was going to be a difficult task after we went down 2-0 within the first ten minutes owing to some poor defensive mistakes. Despite this, we rallied hard and settled into the game, striking up some beautiful combination play and creating some good chances. Our pressure eventually told, Campbell converting a few tough chances to restore parity at 2-2. I encouraged the boys to stick to our style and remain calm despite some physical Xavier play, Seb was particularly instrumental in Midfield as he continued to unlock the opposition defense and dictate the tempo of the game. Unfortunately, some more defensive errors allowed the opposition to go 4-2 up and

it looked like there was no way back into the game. Pleasingly the boys refused to lie down and accept defeat, increasing the tempo in an attempt to rescue a draw. Seb was rewarded for an excellent display as he converted a corner at the back post with a sound header from a Matty Cruise corner. Unfortunately, that was to be the final attempt in the game as the ref blew the final whistle upon resumption. Despite the loss there were plenty of positives to be taken from the game with our particular style of play becoming more and more evident, if we can bring all the pieces together and address our defensive frailty I am incredibly positive about what this team can achieve moving forward. SOCCER 7B BGS 5 defeated Scotch College 2 Goals: Julius fewerda, shohma The 7Bs boys started the game slowly with the midfield being scattered across the field many times. A run into the box and a goalkeeping mistake allowed scotch to go 2-0 up half way into the first half. However, the boys started to dominate with Julius and shohma working off each other and combining for 2 goals making it 2-2. Although yet again we switched off and another mistake allowed scotch to score. The second half was even with scotch scoring an early goal through a penalty and another goal against the run of play. James hepples making multiple saves kept us in the game. Losing 5-2 to scotch when we gifted them 3 of their goals hurts as we turn our focus to next week looking to work on our defensive structure and game focus. SOCCER 7C BGS 0 defeated by St Kevins 8 The 7C Soccer team were up for another battle once again this weekend as they faced St. Kevins on the Mitchell. After the boys had played incredibly well last weekend against Scotch in their undoubtedly best game yet, the 7Cs were ready for the challenge. The first half, however, came as a great shock to our team after it had become clear that St Kevins was a very strong and skilled team. BGS tried their hardest to maintain ball control and keep pressure on their opponent yet it was not enough to stop the away team from conceding a damaging 6 goals. After the break, the boys returned to the game taking into account some things they needed to fix up. St Kevins only scored twice more in the second half, which showed BGS had really improved their game play. Overall, BGS 7Cs didn't have the end they were hoping for as St Kevins took the win, however they really displayed their ability to step up their game when it was needed. Great job to the boys and keep your heads up!
