Basketball 7A BGS - 47 defeated Xavier Burke Hall - 6 After a solid few weeks of training the Year 7 A Basketball boys were eager to take on Xavier Burke Hall in their first round game on Saturday, and it didn t take long for the boys to start gelling like a team that had played together for years. Jack Giblin and Nick McCluskey were quick to start the scoring for BGS and their pressure up the court saw several early turn overs that gave the boys an early lead. This saw Xavier quick to call a timeout to re-group. The pressure didn t stop there however, with Mitch Terry pulling in countless rebounds at both ends of the court to stop Xavier getting any second chance points. Campbell Yeo and Ryan Williams battled hard inside, setting several screens to get their teammates open and also hitting the scoreboard themselves. With the boys piling the points on in the first half, the second half saw them pull their defence back to half court, but their pressure didn t let up, with Chris Tomaras, Heath Futlon and Connor Harding reading the play fantastically and creating several turnovers and quick points. Billy Morris pressure was also relentless and his composure on court saw him set up several of his teammates to score. Although the score was getting away from Xavier, they continued to battle hard from start to finish, but the BGS boys proved to strong, running out winners by 41 points. With game one under their belts, the boys are looking forward to another solid week of training before taking the court next week for Round 2. Basketball 7B BGS -52 defeated Caulfield -26 After a couple of weeks of hard training, the BGS 7Bs were eager to play in their first match against Caulfield. The first 5 minutes showed some scrappy basketball, with both teams needing to clear out some cobwebs for the first match of the season. Lachlan Molloy was impressive for BGS early, with some composure under pressure and great passes to set up teammates. Thomas Hahn was strong on the defensive end, as was James Huang. After a close first half BGS exploded in the second half, thanks to some intense defence leading to easy fast break opportunities. Terrance Wang, Cooper Beasley and Tom Howie all ran hard to get baskets, whilst Mack Anderson found his range from the floor with a few nice jumpshots. A fit BGS team ran out the second half winners, beating Caulfield Well done to the boys for a strong first game and thanks to the parents for helping out and coming to support.
Basketball 7C BGS - 46 defeated Haileybury - 2 The boys played a fantastic game this week holding Haileybury to only 2 points. Our game plan was to run and create fast break opportunities every chance we got. The boys executed this perfectly outscoring Haileybury 24 points to 2 in the first half. Our defence and rebounding was excellent as Haileybury struggled to get the ball past half way. Credit to Allen Wu's incredible offensive rebounding all day, which helped us score just about every time we took the ball up the court. In the second half, the boys were asked to zone back to the three-point line to help Haileybury get the ball over halfway. Great sportsmanship was shown by all the boys as they were happy to give the opposition more of a go and a chance to enjoy themselves. The boy's defence lifted to another level keeping Haileybury scoreless in the second half, also continuing great team offence scoring 22 points. Overall it was an impressive first game for the boys however, we need to make sure we all get to training so we can keep improving and prepare for a tough game next week. Basketball 7D BGS - 28 defeated Haileybury - 16 On Saturday, the 7D boys took to their first season of Brighton Grammar basketball with a hard-fought match against Haileybury Grammar. The BGS boys came away with the win after applying pressure in the early stages of the game and continuing to lead until the end. Special mentions go to James Pennington and Oliver Dipietrantonio for their excellent leadership and work ethic this week and all other players for contributing to the win. Basketball 8A The year 8 A's had a tough first match against Caulfield Grammar. Whilst the end result was 14 point's, this didn't accurately reflect how close the game was and how well the boys played. If a few shots had have gone down the result could have been very different. Hugo Simpson got us off to a great start offensively and Sam Sweet continued this in the 2nd Half. Jay Gibson's effort was noticeable all game and Will Field was solid on both ends of the court. Basketball 8B BGS - 36 defeated St Kevins - 19 Saturday the 28th of April marked the opening round for the 8Bs basketball. Due to illness, the team was a player short so they had to take the court with 9 players, instead of a full ten.
Despite the adversity, the team was able to come out on top against the opposing St Kevins side. With the limited amount of practice leading up to the game, the players were able to quickly adapt to each other s playing styles. The start of the game was filled with excitement, as the halftime score showed a tied game at 13 all. However, in the second half, the boys went to another gear. Charlie Morgan and Jerry Chen taking over the game as the team outscored St Kevins 6-23 in the second half. The final score read a great start and hopefully an indication of the season to come. Basketball 9/10C Geelong College 31 defeated BGS - 25 The second game of the season showed how much the boys have improved with just another week a good start and took an early lead. The Geelong College boys worked hard and the score at half time BGS. The final score gives Geelong Grammar the win at 31 to 25. However, it doesn't do justice to the boys lead the game until the last 3 minutes when the Geelong College boys effected a couple of steals at the end of the game, led by team captain for the day, Sky concluded that BGS played better as a work on their core skills of passing and dribbling. Sky was our captain for the day and strategised with the boys at halftime. They worked out some areas including defence and passing. The end of game debrief concluded that the game play and synergy than last week, but that the team need to work on their dribbling and passing to ensure they keep possession The second half was just as tight with GC stealing the ball and scoring a number of times. The boys reformed and took control. Sky worked hard on the court with good captaincy - although he worked off. Charles shot an outstanding 9 goals with 7 assists from Sky. Jason and Steven were fantastic in providing some great opportunities under the ring. Ed worked hard on his defence and was a problem College boys. Leo showed some great anticipation of game play and provided some good defence. Couple of steals and managed two fast breaks. I am looking forward to working with the boys at training this week. Cross Country Victorian All Schools Championships In a great start to the 2018 season, the BGS boys finished 5 th the Victorian All Schools Cross Country Championships. The team of Sam Flockart, James Capp, Stirling Findlay and Max Kortge performed exceptionally well in a field of over 50 schools. It was a great start to the XC season and we look forward to the next state finals on the 12th May. Tom Banfield also participated in under 18 composite team that finished in the top 10 in their age group. Thank-you to all runners and parents who supported on the day. If you are interested in running cross country, either as part of your training program, during a bye week or at selected events please contact TiC Mark Dowley through the school.
Football 1st XVIII BGS defeated Caulfield Best: Butler, Crocker, Phillips Despite being confronted with a hostile home crowd and being two men down 10 minutes into the second quarter the boys overcame a strong Caulfield outfit on Friday at Caulfield. With Butler in everything and Crocker creating goals up forward the team found various ways to overcome every challenge. Caulfield moved the ball well through the middle and went 2 goals up early in the second quarter; with Lewis going down the team was thrown around again and every player did whatever was asked on him to ensure we got the job done. It was pleasing that a number of the younger players were exposed to this pressure and this will stand them in good stead for future games. We now understand the intensity that needs to be bought to every contest, every game and if we continue to get this aspect of our game right we will have lots of success this season. Football 3rd XVIII Scotch College defeated BGS Best: Mongey, Rathmayr, Morris, Evans, Buscombe. We started well in the first quarter, kicking three goals, with Jake Mongey kicking two. Frank Morris and Nik Rathmayr were busy in the midfield and the tackling pressure all over the ground was impressive. Alex Grant scored a goal from a free kick for a great tackle. We didn t score a goal for the next 2 ½ quarters. Some injuries forced us to move Tom Whitson to the backline and then the forward line got sucked into chasing the ball and when we got it forward it quickly came back out. The boys chased and tackled well but we lost our structure and cohesion. We fought back well in the last quarter but were too far behind by that stage. Football 8A BGS 10 goals, 12 behinds defeated Geelong College 3 Goals, 7 behinds Best Players: Hope, Travers, Campigli, Marriott, Mackenzie, Pailillo, Jarick, Watters, McLuskey, Bowen At 7am we had an extra three boys show up to help the 22 players get on the bus for the trip to Geelong College. This set the tone for the day. All boys started the day with a positive attitude and some personal targets on how they wanted to present themselves. During the warm up, the boys personally identified aspects of their game from the Wizard, Warrior and Care-Giver perspectives. We kicked three goals in the first quarter with strong defensive efforts and continual forward 50 entries. At half time the BGS boys let each other know what
they were doing personally the ensure team success and made a commitment to build on these. The team set targets to keep the opposition scoreless and to kick 12 goals to win the game. From the opening minutes of the second half, the boys continued to learn how to play in different positions and had to rely on the support of teammates to help them play the role. At the final siren, we had 8 different goal kickers and the win. This team is obviously a product of shared success with their friends, parents and coaches. The three extra boys that came along to help coach, run water and run messages, played a pivotal role at the breaks to give meaningful feedback to their mates and myself. This week I encourage the boys to speak with their parents about their footy development. Where to next from here should be the focus of these invaluable conversations. Hockey -1 st XI Brighton vs Caulfield BGS 5 defeated Caulfield 2 (Sat 21/4) The boys arrived at Wheelers Hill ready for their first game of the season, seven anxious for their first game for the First XI. Quickly after the starting whistle, the Brighton defence loses their footing and concede a goal, starting on the back foot leaves the rest of the team nervous. Nevertheless, quickly Craig Marais scores one back with a marvellous flick bottom right, and another shortly after. However, the lead is lost leading into half time with a score of 2-2 following a Caulfield breakaway. The Brighton boys regather their strength during the break and head into the second half with renewed vigour. Taking advantage of the tired opposition three more goals are scored, with two from Craig and one by Will Middlemiss after running half the field. All aided by the high pressure from some of the new players in the forward line, Spencer and Brandon Reddell The game ended with a scoreline of 5-2 for Brighton and they celebrate surrounding the seven debutantes chanting the school chorus. Brighton vs Xavier BGS - 4 defeated Xavier - 1 The first home game for the Brighton side opens with high intensity from both sides, hard running at the start from the likes of Jamie Dickson and David. Brighton opens with the first goal following multiple penalty corners by Craig Marais. Followed by a goal by Zach Adam- Gedge slamming the ball bottom left after a deflection from the keeper s pads. Unfortunately, Xavier make a breakaway shortly after and the score going into half time is 2-1. Brighton slows the game down in the second half passing around the back and making methodical penetrations into the circle which lead to another two goals by Craig Marais, set up by passing from Lucas Pithie and Will Middlemiss. Brighton come away with a 4-1 win in front of a home crowd for their second game.
Rugby 1 st BGS - 80 defeated Haileybury 0 On Saturday, the 1 st XV played against Haileybury College on the Wilson Rec. A large crowd had built during the seconds game beforehand and with the opening whistle and a strong run from Tom Murray the first try was scored by Zac De Worsop for Brighton within the first minute! Not done with yet, Muzz continued on with another try shortly after. At half time the score line was clear, with BGS 54 points up. Stronger running and some great structure helped Brighton reach 80-0 with ten minutes left to go, triggering the mercy rule and finishing the game early. Tries: Webster 2, Canham 2, Glasgow 2, Fisher 1, Chand 2, O Brien 1, De Worsop 2, Armatruda 1, Markham - 1 Soccer 7A BGS - 6 defeated St Kevins - 5 Goals: Campbell 2, Seb 2, Ethan, Ryan. Once again, the Mighty 7A s got off to a fantastic start in what is their maiden Winter Sports season in the middle school. Despite having the somewhat unusual Friday night fixture the boys showed no signs of tired minds and were eager to start positively against a strong St Kevins team. Despite having limited training sessions to organise structure and establish a style of play, the boys started confidently, Campbell and Seb linking up nicely in the opening stages to create a few nice changes we were unfortunate not to put away. Stkevs responded with their talented forwards netting two goals before we could reply. In my mind was the most pleasing aspect was our unwavering attitude and will to keep attacking, this was realised as we responded emphatically wrestling the lead back to take a commanding 4-2 lead into the break, courtesy of two goals to Campbell and Seb, of particular note was a beautifully taken free kick into the top bins from Campbell. We adjusted accordingly at half time and managed to net another two goals in the second half, Ryan and Ethan both capitalising on sharp chances, before a late Stkevs fightback made the last five minutes or so uneasy. A few critical saves from Nik Skocic, younger brother of former First XI keeper Branko, ensured we remained in the lead to the final whistle, BGS coming out on top 6-5 in a game perhaps lacking in defensive effort but certainly providing plenty of quality attacking play. With the chance to have two solid training sessions this week I am confident we can build on this promising start and look to strengthen some key areas moving forward. I am certainly excited with what is to come. Soccer 7B
Caulfield - 9 defeated BGS - 1 Goal scorer: Max Crawley Brighton s 7bs were looking to find early success to the season as they came up against Caulfield Grammar in the first game of the season. BGS were unable to keep the very talented Caulfield back as they scored just a couple of minutes into the game. However, a good moment of play allowed BGS to equalise and even the match. Unfortunately, Caulfield quickly ran tyrant scoring multiple goals in quick succession. A strong last 10 minutes from BGS saw them come very close to scoring many times, as they looked evenly matched. Soccer 7C Caulfield - 5 defeated BGS - 1 Goals: Tommy Mazzoni With Zac upfront, BGS were working hard to hold back the talented navy blues from Wheelers Hill. Early in the foggy morning, Brighton conceded early yet it wasn't long before their strong midfield found their feet and worked together to hold back their opponent. While the hard-working defenders Richard, Landan and Leon tried their best to feed the ball up the ground, the 7C strikers from Caulfield played through and scored 2 more goals before half-time. Yet after a quick break, chat and re-structure the boys from Brighton were now ready to give it their best. It wasn't long before Zac and Tommy worked together to score BGS's first goal of the match. The home team took the win at full time; however, it was still a great game to start the season for BGS 7Cs. Soccer 9C BGS - 9 defeated Xavier - 1 Goals: Juan (3), Jules, Fynn, Adam, Toby, Jet, Alex BGS bounced back from a defeat to St. Kevin s last week with an emphatic win over Xavier. An early first half goal set the tone for the rest of the match as BGS commanded the middle of the park and peppered the Xavier goal with chances. Debutant Juan showed no signs of nerves as he bagged himself a first half double. James, Jules and Alex worked their quick feet in the middle, and Adam, Toby and Jet provided the service from out wide. Most impressive was the fact BGS finished the game with seven different goal scorers, and Juan with his first hat trick of the year. Soccer 10A BGS - 1 defeated Caulfield Grammar - 0
The 10A s had a great start to 2018 beating Caulfield 1-0. We kept our shape and worked really hard defensively to get the win. The work rate and ball movement was keys and if we are to continue having this success we need to match this each week. Soccer 10C BGS - 11 defeated Scotch College - 0 Best Players: Keir Canwell, Carl Rumbens, Robert Kyte, Flynn Chan, Mitch Augustini The boys got the season off to a great start with a big win away from home at Scotch. Within the first 5 minutes of the game, we had established a 3-goal lead. The pressure put on from every member of the squad had Scotch confined to their own half. We played with great intensity, and showed a willingness to harass our opposition and win the ball when it was in dispute. This created many chances to score from interceptions high up the pitch, chances that were seized upon with great finishing from the likes of Flynn Chan and Jack Longmire in the early stages. A focus during the week was using wide players to create opportunities. It was very encouraging to see great link up play between the fullbacks and the wingers in the final third. There were also many great solo-runs and crosses from the wide men, and it was very pleasing to see the boys take this approach to creating goals. There were good performances also at the heart of defense, as our center backs showed a great willingness to win aerial contests, and a steady calmness in distributing the ball to team mates further up the field. Keir Canwell played very well in central midfield. He scored three goals, and created plenty of opportunities for others as the main creative outlet of the team. Flynn Chan also had a great game. Playing as a striker in the first half, Flynn scored twice, before moving to right back in the second half. At right back, Flynn showed great determination and confidence. The boys to their credit kept up their intensity all the way through, increasing their 7-0 half time lead to 11 by full time, keeping a clean sheet in the process. The lads new to the team and to the sport can be very proud of the way they approached their first game. The team as a whole should be very happy with what was a very strong performance overall. Soccer 1 st BGS - 4 defeated Caulfield 1
Soccer 2nds BGS - 4 defeated Caulfield - 0 Goals: Anton Derevianko 1, Michael Fitzgerald 1, Michael Dean 2 Best: Michael Fitzgerald, Michael Dean, Leo Kouskouris The boys began the season with a confident 4-0 win against Caulfield away from home. Goals scored by Anton Derevianko, Michael Fitzgerald and Michael Dean secured the victory in what was a comfortable game. The BGS goal was never really tested as the team did well to hold their structure, and then get creative when flowing forward. BGS will be looking for the form to carry into next week when they play their first game of the season at home.
