The seconds badminton boys had an early start this week to face off against Caulfield Grammar at home this week. While looking initially promising in the singles with resilience from Owen Lui and a star-performance from Simon Wong, the boys were defeated in the doubles games that followed to result in a 5-7 loss by rubbers. A valiant effort by the team this week to battle through some tough games. BGS Blues defeated by 14 games to 11 by the BGS Red team As we had had very high temperatures all week, the gym was very hot and steamy when our match started at am. Playing conditions were very trying. All the boys took to the courts cheerfully and it was really good to the never say die attitude from all of them. Ryan Hartshorne, Tim Krynski and Kieran Farrell all won their rubbers. Gordon Chen, Matt Cook and Curtis Wilson all pushed their opponents to three sets. Most improved player this week was Teddy Lovell. BGS defeated Wesley College Badminton 10 Rubbers to 2 Some very good playing happened for the Badminton Y8 team on Saturday 24th of Feb We defeated Wesley College s convincingly winning 10 rubbers to 2. Boys supported each other really well and their communication on the court was excellent. Hugo Mintrom, David Yuan and Thomas Galinas are the best singles players this time. Best doubles combination was Terence Wang and Eric Chen. BGS defeated Scotch College Badminton 9 Rubbers to 3 We had a very exciting match this Saturday. We defeated Scotch College 9 Rubbers to 3 Rubbers. All players: Jason Tang, Sven Steward, Oliver Cruse, Louie Liu, Larry Li, Jason Gu, Robert Kyte, Yali Lin and Kareem Zecevic, played very well. They are to be congratulated for their fine play. Ms Hunt is also to be congratulated on her first victory over the strong Scotch team in many years!!

BGS defeated Haileybury 4/151 all out 61 The 8A s had another dominant win over Haileybury. BGS won the toss and sent Haileybury into bat on a soft green wicket that had a lot in it for the bowlers. Jay Gibson ( 1/7 off 4 ) and James Hare ( 1/9 off 4) started off the game by bowling very economically and instantly got reward for their tight bowling in the form of wickets. All the other bowlers followed the openers lead with some very tight bowling, which lead to BGS bowling Haileybury out for 61. With Archie May (2/5 off 3) picking up a couple late wickets, while Lucas Toms, Cameron Mackenzie and Flynn Bongiorno all picked up 1 wicket each to help round off a dominant bowling and fielding display. From the very beginning BGS did not look like losing as Noah Hartman (37no) and Jules Lohan (33) batted smartly and confidently as they took the game away from Haileybury. With a lot of over still to bat, Elliot Perkins came to the crease and smashed a quick 35 with some help from a quick 20 from Flynn Bongiorno. BGS ended up being 4/151 at the end of the 27th over. It was a very commanding performance with all the boys in the team contributing to get the win. On Saturday the 24th of Feb the mighty 8C cricket team took on one of the BGS rivals of Xavier College. We knew we were in for a good game when for the first time this season our whole team had arrived before the commencement of the match, allowing us the option to bowl first for the first time. The Boys were up and about in the field stopping all runs where they could and holding on to their catches. The wickets were spread around very evenly between the bowlers, however the stand out for the first innings was obtaining 4 run outs as a team, showing a huge improvement to our previous weeks fielding efforts. Xavier had set us 117 and now it was time to bat. Despite losing a couple of early wickets, we were able to get off to a good start with the bad with Ryan Jackson top scoring 27 and Jackson McKenzie making 14 both not out. The runs began to dry up for a few overs in the middle of the innings leaving us needing 32 off 32 balls. This further turned into 2 of the last ball of the game where Lachie McCurry and Leslie Tole managed to scrape in 2 runs and give the team their first win of the season. This was the 3rd out of 5 games that the 8C's have played that have come down to the last over of the game, but getting the victory this week made it all the better for the boys.

BGS 5/132 defeated Geelong College 10/61 McConnan 57, Sherbourne 43 Marsden 3/2, Behl 2/7, McConnon 2/38 BGS won the toss and elected to bowl first on the Mackie Oval in Geelong. Darcy McConnan (2/38) and Sam Fitzgerald (1/14) opened the bowling keeping it tight and with the help of runouts from Fitzgerald and Trent Thomas, Geelong College limped to 5/51 at drinks. First change bowlers Luke Marsden (3/2 from 7 overs) and Shaurya Behl (2/7 from 4 overs) bowled well as the hosts lost their last 5 wickets for just 21 runs to finish 10/61. The openers Sherbourne (43) and Rohan saw off the new ball with a mixture of solid defence and elegant stroke play. The loss of two quick wickets saw Darcy McConnan stride to the crease. His 11 4s and one 6 over long on saw him pick up a quick 57 that broke the back of the small target. BGS continued their innings after reaching their target to ensure the middle order had some much needed time in the middle. BGS finished their innings 5/132 off 20 overs. Brighton Grammar 8/45 off 14.3 overs defeated by Haileybury 8/176 off 28 overs Brighton lost the toss and were sent into bowl. With only 9 players, BGS started well with 3 quick wickets inside the first 5 overs. J. Longmire was the best of the bowlers with 3/23 off 6 overs, while Stroud got figures of 2/37 off 6 overs. Throughout the middle overs, the boys started losing motivation and momentum and Haileybury took advantage of the situation. First-time cricketer, A. Wang had a brilliant first game with figures of 0/16 off 2 overs. With some short pitch bowling and leg side bowling, Haileybury were able to add 107 runs in just 17 overs. BGS started off really badly for the second week in a row, losing 3 wickets inside the first 5 overs. L. Pithie and M. Blyth started off really strong with the bat. A few overs later, the top 4 had a batting collapse. Two out of the top four batsmen weren't able to put on any runs. Next to the crease was D. Dowd. For the second week in a row, D. Dowd was hitting the ball nicely into the gaps. Everything from that point on went downhill. The last 5 overs, BGS lost 3 wickets for 20 runs. In the end, BGS fell short by 131 runs. IMPROVEMENTS : - More talk in the field - Walking in when the bowler is about to bowl - Line and Length POSITIVES :

- Opening bowlers did really well with new ball - Opening batters blocked out the first few overs - Almost everyone was at the ground on time BGS 210 Leadbeater 59, Munnings 34 defeated Carey 104 Munnings 5/34 & 61 Leadbeater 8/13 Leadbeater claims 8/13 to lead BGS to an outright victory After much soul searching and hard work, Brighton travelled to Carey determined to put behind us the disappointing efforts of the previous fortnight. Winning the toss and bowling, Adam Oulton finally got reward for his hard work and fine bowling claiming two wickets as our fielders began to support the bowlers, holding our catches and creating chances. Our bowling remained tight as everyone contributed to building pressure. We needed someone to capitalize on our great start and the skipper stepped up to claim 5 wickets in a mystifying spell of slow bowling that left Carey players unable to score and eventually implode. A great run out by Maxy James at the end of Carey s innings typified the intent we showed and our improved ability to take our chances keys to continuing to improve our team performances. A solid effort by openers, Brad Marais and the skipper again left BGS 0/40 overnight and strongly placed to claim first innings points. Despite the early loss of Brad on the Saturday, Ben Pryor initially and then Jonty Leadbeater cruised through to pass Carey 2 wickets down. Unfortunately Carey set defensive fields and we struggled to score at the increased rate, that would have allowed us to send them back in in search of an outright. A couple of unfortunate run outs to players in good form, further slowed our momentum as we looked to increase our rate. Leadbeater continued his solid form with the bat making 59, whilst Munnings made 34 and Adam Oulton whacked a quick 20 to get us to 210. With three hours to play, we wanted to pressure Carey and take the opportunity to earn extra points. We needed someone to lead and say I believe we can do this ; after Bellmaine s early breakthrough and some stoic defending from Carey we found our man. In a spell of bowling that left BGS legend Gary McPhee to suggest he d never seen figures like that in my time (30 years!) of APS cricket, Jonty Leadbeater tore through the Carey line up to claim 8/13 off 17 overs and lead Brighton to an outright victory. Jonty s performances across the game were clearly worthy of man of the match honours, however, contributions from Oulton with the ball early, Munning with bat and ball, Marais under pressure on the Friday night, Max s run out, Aiden and Ben s tight bowling and players responding to calls and running when they knew they were under pressure, were keys to putting us in the position to win the game.

Henley Regatta The Henley Regatta this weekend for the Skelton club was only participated in by the 10A s. The B s had a training session rowing to Footscray and back, and the C s participated in the annual bragging rights challenge in the docklands against all the year 9 quad crews as they are a four. The B s failed to get a place to the regatta, leaving them a bit annoyed, but who doesn t love a good 30km row to Footscray and back anyway! The A s started of the morning with a time trial to see where they placed against other year 10A crews for the 1400m race. They placed 3rd behind Wesley and Skevs, a short 3 seconds of 1st. This meant that they would line up against St Kevins for the head to head Semi-final. We ended up losing to Skevs by half a boat length, ending our racing for the day. The C s however, did have a productive day out, after a couple of races, they finished a solid 2nd racing against all the BGS year 9 crews in the annual bragging rights challenge at docklands. Henley Regatta This weekend the Cooper Club competed in the Australian Henley regatta. It allowed all senior crews to continue to refine race strategies even with the course only being a bendy 1.5km course. Although varying circumstances didn t allow the crews to row against top of the division schools, we were still able to learn from the races. The first eight had a somewhat disappointing time trial, but were happy to come off with the result needed for the desired draw. They were able to create a better semi-final and final against Carey and Melbourne High respectively. The second eight had a good day in their division after a strong start in the time trial. This performance was backed with wins over Caulfield and Scotch s 10As. The 3rd eight put in a strong time trial and took out a win over St Kevin s in their semifinal, but unfortunately fell short of Scotch in the final. The Australian Henley Regatta is a fun event that allows crews to take on their competition 1 on 1, allowing very competitive racing for the rowers and an exciting up close experience for parents on the bank. Thanks to the parents that came out on Saturday for your support through the finish line. Brighton Grammar 7 sets 56 games defeated Carey Grammar 5 sets 47 games BGS games sets defeated Carey 5 sets 93 games. In some very close doubles matches including a come from behind win from Tom Whitson and Brandon Duan and sound victories from Luke Sorensen and James Konstas, BGS were able to establish a 5 sets to 3 lead going into the singles.

With excellent wins from Connor Hipwell (no 2), Zac Adam-Gedge (no 3), Luke Sorensen (no 4), James Konstas (no 6), Ben Summerfield (no 7) and Brandon Duan (No 8) the team was able to secure a comfortable 11 sets to 5 victory. Brighton Grammar 7 sets 56 games defeated Carey Grammar 5 sets 47 games The Tonners made the trip past to the other side of the Eastern Freeway and were lucky to defeat Carey who were a player short. The wind helped Alex and James in their doubles match as they smashed the ball across the court. Luke Hart brought his A-game and skidded across the court to make impossible shots. Max, Trent and Seb were impressive in their wins against their players. Although they didn t have win, Daniel and Spencer both showed great progress in their games. Haileybury 15 sets 71 games def BGS 1 set 29 games This weekend year 8A went to Haileybury Keysborough to play tennis. The team welcomed back Matthew Bates in his first game of the season due to injury. All the boys tried incredibly hard in their singles and doubles but we soon learned how good our opponents were. Though everyone tried their absolute best we were beaten by a better team on the day. The highlight of the day was Caspar Payne winning his singles in a close game finishing in a tie break 6-5. MGS defeated Brighton Grammar 8 sets 59 games to 4 sets 41 games After a brilliant start to the season we were edged out by MGS in some hard fought matches this week. We had a promising session in windy conditions for the doubles, securing two of the four matches. Zack Bogoesvski and J Sum prevailed in their match with an excellent result of 6 games to 1. The singles were a much tighter affair with Jasper Findlay narrowly defeated in a tie breaker after playing a tense match but James Cheng prevailed in a hard hitting match with 6 games to 2. BGS defeated by Melbourne Grammar 5-7 Saturday was an extremely close, competitive day with both Melbourne and us playing some great tennis throughout the morning. In the end however Melbourne did just get over the line winning two more sets than us in the singles unfortunately - with the doubles tied 2-2. Although the result was unlucky the boys should be commemorated for their efforts as most

of the boys played their best tennis I have seen this year so far. Some highlights include David Canta playing number one, smashing his opponent 6-1 in high quality tennis and his doubles with Harley, winning convincingly 6-1 in the best display of doubles I have seen in the team so far. Tony and Adam s doubles was very close, but luckily and skillfully did pull off a classy 6-4 win in what encompassed a few long rallies and great shots from the boys whose first time it was playing together - another highlight of the day. I wish the boys luck on camp and will see them back on the court soon. St Kevins beat BGS 8 matches to 2. They did not have enough players to play full 12 matches. 9C Tennis competed with St Kevin s at Tooronga Fields on Saturday 24th February to experience a decisive victory. St Kevins had players missing, but the games that were played were completely one-sided in terms of effort and skill. However, an exception to this pattern was Tian Pang s masterful victory of six matches to one, and Dylan Goodger with his partner Finn Lade staged an impressive level of determination to prevail in their doubles game to win six matches to 4. On Saturday the 24th of February, the Brighton Grammar School 10D Red tennis squad travelled to Tooronga Fields to play St. Kevin s at their new sporting complex. This two-day old facility had never been used before meaning that the following matches would go down in history. The games started at 10:30am and things weren t looking good for Brighton Grammar. The first two singles games went to St. Kevin s 6-0. This all changed when seed 1 Jeremy Booth brought home the first win of the day beating his St. Kevin s equivalent in a 6-5 thriller. Brighton then won four out of the next five singles matches to finish the first half at 5 sets to 3 in favor of BGS. Next came the doubles which after 4 grueling matches was split 2 sets to 2 giving BGS the overall lead at the end of the day at 7 sets to 5. Even after a disappointing start BGS boys were able to show their resilience and end the day victorious. Great work! BGS lost to St Kevins 3 sets to 9 The 10D Tennis team played at the new St Kevin s sporting facility on Saturday. It was understandable but still disappointing that a number of our players went to the wrong venue initially and were late arriving to the venue. As a consequence, we started with the Singles matches putting boys on as they arrived but not necessarily in the order that they should play which did disadvantage us. There is a lesson to be learnt for all teams with matches at new venues to allow plenty of time to travel. In the end we were defeated 3 sets to 9 a disappointing result.

BGS First VI BGS First VI 8 defeated Scotch College First VI 5 BGS Second VI Bye BGS Third VI BGS Third VI 7 defeated Scotch College Second VI 3 BGS secured two wins from their two games with Scotch College last Friday night. On a perfect evening for Touch Football, the first VI put on a very good display to beat a very good Scotch side. The game was very close for the first three-quarters of the game with Brighton finishing the stronger and tagging on the winning scores. The intensity of Brighton s play, both offensively and defensively was superb. They kept their shape when they were under pressure and refused to panic at pivotal moments of the game. Harry Reynolds was again superb, but the entire panel ably supported him with Oscar Buscombe and Dom Lynch being particularly impressive. The third VI had a great win over Scotch s second VI. The boys played a very structured game and implemented moves from the training field successfully. All the panel played well although Sam Reid and Nik Rathmayr deserve special mention for their contributions.

This was a well-deserved win, and should give us the much needed confidence and energy to take down other top tier teams in the APS competition.
