FRIDAY 21 OCTOBER 2016 Head Master's BulletinPrep NewsJunior School News PDF Version SPORT Trinity Basketball
Trials versus High Trinity completed its preparations for the upcoming CAS season with most Teams taking on Sydney Boys High from the GPS. The Year 8s were impressive, winning all eight games out of nine contested. There will still be more movement amongst the Teams as boys continue to compete for spots within their Year group. 1st V Trinity finished their pre-season off with a 15-point loss (64-80) to High in a close contest that was in the balance with only minutes left in the game. Jake Kerry (12Ho) had the hot hand in the first half, nailing four bombs from beyond the arc, while Davo Hickey (12Ke) proved a handful on the way to 16 points for the half. Trinity s rock in the middle, Tom Mackenzie (12WJ), battled hard around the basket against High s best player and captain to see the Greens right in the match heading into the main break down by just seven points (36-44). Trinity held their own to remain still only seven points down at the end of the third period, thanks to some solid inside-outside work from Jed Keogh (12Ar). Ryan Maranik (12Ar) played his best game of the pre-season with some great hustle on defence and smart options offensively. Trinity s young bench, featuring four Year 9s, looked to establish themselves, but at times were just out-muscled by the older High team, but as they gain confidence, more experience showed in the game. They will be more than capable this coming season. It doesn t get any easier for this young group in the opening game of the season when they take on CAS powerhouse Barker College in the Trinity Sports Centre, who will be keen to exact revenge after Trinity humbled them in the final game of last season to claim the A.V. Smith Shield.
Leading Scorers Davo Hickey 26 pts. Jake Kerry 17 pts. The following boys have been chosen to represent the 1st V for the 2016/17 CAS season: Jake Kerry (12Ho), Jed Keogh (12Ar), Tom Mackenzie (12WJ), Ryan Maranik (12Ar), Davo Hickey (12Ke), Richard Ziade (10Mu), Ethan Bateman (9WJ), Earvin Dizon (9Ta), Jack Nichol (9He), Luke Nichol (9He). The coaching staff would like to congratulate Jake Kerry on his selection as Captain of Basketball and Jed Keogh and Davo Hickey as Co-Vice Captains of the 1st V. 2nd V The Seconds played their best game of the pre-season against a young talented High team to only go down by nine points (40-49). Ollie Davis (12Ke) provided the spark early, while Luke Gabriel (11Hi) crashed the boards hard as Trinity went to the main break down 10 points (16-26). In the second half Nicholas Driessen s (12Yo) physical play and finesse around the basket showed he will be a valuable asset this season. Cooper Young (11He) began to understand his role, finding some openings to pick up a couple of baskets to keep Trinity in the contest. Controlling the backcourt Justin Jasa (11Ho) managed to get in behind the High defence in the final period to put the Moore Park School under pressure. It proved a good hit out for Trinity, who will go into the Barker game confident and if its experienced players such as Andrew Jamieson-Grigg (12Ho), Pat Di Giannantnio (12Ho) and Ollie Davis can step up a level a promising season lies ahead. Leading Scorers Nicholas Driessen 13 pts. Ollie Davis 8 pts. The following boys have been chosen to represent the 2nd V for the 2016/17 CAS season: Ollie Davis (12Ke), Patrick Di Giannantonio (12Ho), Harry Dunn (12Mu), Nicholas Driessen (12Yo), Andrew Jamieson-Grigg (12Ho), Ben LoRusso (12He), David Carreon (11St), Thomas Corias (11Hi), Luke Gabriel (11Hi), Justin Jasa (11Ho), Cooper Young (11He). The coaching staff would like to congratulate Pat Di Giannantonio on his selection as Captain of the 2nd V. 4th V Trinity played good poise in the first hit-out against High to secure a confidence- boosting four point victory. John Nassif s (11He) athleticism helped him to a game high of 8 points. Giving solid support were Jonathon
Roseworn (11WJ) and Lukas Phipps (12Fo). Year 10C An upbeat tempo started the game where Alex Cameron (WH) was a constant threat under the basket, scoring 10 points through a number of put back baskets to see Trinity lead at the break. Then followed some pure shooting from Robbie Tosich (Ho), which sealed the win for Trinity. Year 10D Both teams started tentatively before some good shooting from Ethan Boursiani-Lawrence (We) gave the Greens the early advantage on the scoreboard. Jack Watson (He) was a constant threat at the offensive end with some good drives to the hoop. Greater emphasis on defence this week will be an important ingredient to toppling Barker in the opening game of the CAS. Year 10E Trinity controlled the middle early through centres, Jaymesson Ieremia (WJ) and Thomas Griffin (Yo), allowing the rest of their teammates to control the ball on the perimeter. Alexander Stojkovic (Ho) continually found Mark Reparci (St) and Austin Bonner-Smith (Ar), who were able to get open to pile on points. The team shows terrific promise for the season after a great win by twelve points. Year 9A Trinity had a great first hit out to secure a comfortable 27-point win. With the loss of key experienced players to the Firsts, the remaining boys really stepped up and enjoyed the extra responsibilities. Joel Passerini (Hi) had a great game at both ends of the court. Asher Linkous (Yo) hasn t missed a beat, stepping into leadership role and being impressive with his ability to create scoring opportunities. Year 8A It was a sluggish start by the Greens, but after an early timeout and some strong words from Coach BJ Carter, the boys responded and lifted their intensity. Trinity responded with three straight steals, resulting in easy baskets. Deonte Williams (Yo) was solid at both ends, while Tyrese Proctor (Fo) and Bertie Alcock (WJ) overcome early injuries to inspire their team. Theo Kidd (WJ) provided onlookers with an early highlight finish-- a fast break with a nice little slam.
Year 8B Trinity got out to an early lead with great teamwork and early shots made by Leo Byfield (Ke) and Nat Pearson (Sc). High came charging back, reducing the lead to just two baskets late in the game. Jacob Stark s (Fo) energy and athleticism off the bench along with Dylan Lay (St), who logged a lot of minutes at the point, were able to ice the game with a sweet left hand layup. Year 8C Trinity was impressive in winning their trial by 28 points. Tate Cole (Sc) played very well directing the offensive and Daniel Morris (St) was strong offensively and defensively. The boys implemented the new concepts from training well and worked hard on defence. Year 8D The Ds began well to lead 24-2 at half time. Trinity s point guards Olly White (Fo), Joel Matthei (WJ) and Hugo Tran (Yo) played well under pressure, making good decisions with the ball that resulted in many scoring options for the Greens. Matthew Chen (He) also dominated under the basket at both ends. Year 8E Trinity had a great introduction to their season with a strong win against Sydney High. The teamwork and communication showed by the boy is to be commended. William Orr s (Fo) work inside the key proved invaluable in securing a strong lead early in the game. Special mention must also go to Kallan Maranik (Ar) and Adam Pascale (Ke), whose defensive steals provided necessary pressure throughout the game. Year 8F The strong 30+ points win by the Fs, demonstrated their great potential for the upcoming season. Adam Stavros (Ho) and Liam Filby (Yo) hustled relentlessly both on offence and defence which inspired their teammates to follow suit. Year 8G Trinity started the year in winning fashion, running out 16-point winners over Newington Fs. Zach Gindy (Ke) was relentless in his pressure in defence, while Jordan Mikhael (Ke) was strong in his breaks down the court and driving to the basket. Great teamwork overall and unselfish play from all players provided a great platform for the upcoming season.
