8 ACADEMIC Academic Focus Economics Department Year 10 Students and Parents-- An academic opportunity selecting an accelerated subject. In the 2016/17 academic year in the 2016/17 year, the Economics Department has two options available for any current students in Year 10 to gain a head start and complete a subject in Year 11. If a student is looking to pursue the HSC path, then Business Studies is offered as an accelerated subject in Years 10 and 11 with the final HSC examination being undertaken in October In the International Baccalaureate, Economics at Standard Level is offered with the final examination held in November There are no prerequisites for students undertaking these courses, and no business or economics understanding is required. In fact, most students undertaking one of these courses have not studied Commerce. Historically, the results from the accelerant classes have been outstanding. Over two-thirds of the accelerated HSC Business Studies students, over the last fifteen years, have been awarded a Band Six,' an amazing 1,000% above the State average. Thirteen out of the fifteen years an accelerated HSC Business Studies student has been awarded the HSC Economics prize at Speed Day. Two-thirds of the IB Economics students have been awarded the maximum Grade of Seven. The extra academic rigor of an accelerated subject in Year 10 strengthens the performance across the academic spectrum. Both classes will commence in Week 3 of this term. The classes are taken out of timetable; usually, two early morning starts at 7.30am and two lunchtimes during the week. In Year 11 the accelerant class fits into the main timetable. To be eligible to undertake accelerant HSC Business Studies or IB Economics, a student needs only to be highly motivated, strong academically and willing to take on the challenge of an additional workload in Years 10 and 11. The benefit in Year 12 is that there is more time available to spend on other subjects with one result already banked'. For the students, interest in the HSC accelerated program they should attend a meeting, in Room N1.16 at lunchtime next Monday the 24th of October and for information about the IB Economics course, the students should come to Room N1.16at lunchtime, Tuesday the 25th of October. 9 From the Arthur Holt Library Library Bingo Here in the Library we have several missions, but one of our favourites is to think up interesting and rewarding ways to encourage all students to read for fun. Library Bingo is one of those ideas! It s easy and fun and not too late to join the 70 students and ten teachers who are currently playing. The programme will continue throughout Term 4 so there is still time for students to participate. Those interested in signing up are encouraged to see the Library staff. 19 Trinity Basketball Trials Versus High Trinity completed its preparations for the upcoming CAS season with most Teams taking on Sydney Boys High from the GPS. The Year 8s were impressive, winning all eight games out of nine contested. There will still be more movement amongst the Teams as boys continue to compete for spots within their Year group. 1st V Trinity finished their pre-season off with a 15-point loss (64-80) to High in a close contest that was in the balance with only minutes left in the game. Jake Kerry (12Ho) had the hot hand in the first half, nailing four bombs from beyond the arc, while Davo Hickey (12Ke) proved a handful on the way to 16 points for the half. Trinity s rock in the middle, Tom Mackenzie (12WJ), battled hard around the basket against High s best player and captain to see the Greens right in the match heading into the main break down by just seven points (36-44). Trinity held their own to remain still only seven points down at the end of the third period, thanks to some solid inside-outside work from Jed Keogh (12Ar). Ryan Maranik (12Ar) played his best game of the pre-season with some great hustle on defence and smart options offensively. Trinity s young bench, featuring four Year 9s, looked to establish themselves, but at times were just out-muscled by the older High team, but as they gain confidence, more experience showed in the game. They will be more than capable this coming season. It doesn t get any easier for this young group in the opening game of the season when they take on CAS powerhouse Barker College in the Trinity Sports Centre, who will be keen to exact revenge after Trinity humbled them in the final game of last season to claim the A.V. Smith Shield. Leading Scorers Davo Hickey 26 pts. Jake Kerry 17 pts. The following boys have been chosen to represent the 1st V for the 2016/17 CAS season: Jake Kerry (12Ho), Jed Keogh (12Ar), Tom Mackenzie (12WJ), Ryan Maranik (12Ar), Davo Hickey (12Ke), Richard Ziade (10Mu), Ethan Bateman (9WJ), Earvin Dizon (9Ta), Jack Nichol (9He), Luke Nichol (9He). The coaching staff would like to congratulate Jake Kerry on his selection as Captain of Basketball and Jed Keogh and Davo Hickey as Co-Vice Captains of the 1st V. 2nd V Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 19 of 40

20 The Seconds played their best game of the pre-season against a young talented High team to only go down by nine points (40-49). Ollie Davis (12Ke) provided the spark early, while Luke Gabriel (11Hi) crashed the boards hard as Trinity went to the main break down 10 points (16-26). In the second half Nicholas Driessen s (12Yo) physical play and finesse around the basket showed he will be a valuable asset this season. Cooper Young (11He) began to understand his role, finding some openings to pick up a couple of baskets to keep Trinity in the contest. Controlling the backcourt Justin Jasa (11Ho) managed to get in behind the High defence in the final period to put the Moore Park School under pressure. It proved a good hit out for Trinity, who will go into the Barker game confident and if its experienced players such as Andrew Jamieson-Grigg (12Ho), Pat Di Giannantnio (12Ho) and Ollie Davis can step up a level a promising season lies ahead. Leading Scorers Nicholas Driessen 13 pts. Ollie Davis 8 pts. The following boys have been chosen to represent the 2nd V for the 2016/17 CAS season: Ollie Davis (12Ke), Patrick Di Giannantonio (12Ho), Harry Dunn (12Mu), Nicholas Driessen (12Yo), Andrew Jamieson-Grigg (12Ho), Ben LoRusso (12He), David Carreon (11St), Thomas Corias (11Hi), Luke Gabriel (11Hi), Justin Jasa (11Ho), Cooper Young (11He). The coaching staff would like to congratulate Pat Di Giannantonio on his selection as Captain of the 2nd V. 4th V Trinity played good poise in the first hit-out against High to secure a confidence- boosting four point victory. John Nassif s (11He) athleticism helped him to a game high of 8 points. Giving solid support were Jonathon Roseworn (11WJ) and Lukas Phipps (12Fo). Year 10C An upbeat tempo started the game where Alex Cameron (WH) was a constant threat under the basket, scoring 10 points through a number of put back baskets to see Trinity lead at the break. Then followed some pure shooting from Robbie Tosich (Ho), which sealed the win for Trinity. Year 10D Both teams started tentatively before some good shooting from Ethan Boursiani-Lawrence (We) gave the Greens the early advantage on the scoreboard. Jack Watson (He) was a constant threat at the offensive end with some good drives to the hoop. Greater emphasis on defence this week will be an important ingredient to toppling Barker in the opening game of the CAS. Year 10E Trinity controlled the middle early through centres, Jaymesson Ieremia (WJ) and Thomas Griffin (Yo), allowing the rest of their teammates to control the ball on the perimeter. Alexander Stojkovic (Ho) continually found Mark Reparci (St) and Austin Bonner-Smith (Ar), who were able to get open to pile on points. The team shows terrific promise for the season after a great win by twelve points. Year 9A Trinity had a great first hit out to secure a comfortable 27-point win. With the loss of key experienced players to the Firsts, the remaining boys really stepped up and enjoyed the extra responsibilities. Joel Passerini (Hi) had a great game at both ends of the court. Asher Linkous (Yo) hasn t missed a beat, stepping into leadership role and being impressive with his ability to create scoring opportunities. 21 It was a sluggish start by the Greens, but after an early timeout and some strong words from Coach BJ Carter, the boys responded and lifted their intensity. Trinity responded with three straight steals, resulting in easy baskets. Deonte Williams (Yo) was solid at both ends, while Tyrese Proctor (Fo) and Bertie Alcock (WJ) overcome early injuries to inspire their team. Theo Kidd (WJ) provided onlookers with an early highlight finish-- a fast break with a nice little slam. Year 8B Trinity got out to an early lead with great teamwork and early shots made by Leo Byfield (Ke) and Nat Pearson (Sc). High came charging back, reducing the lead to just two baskets late in the game. Jacob Stark s (Fo) energy and athleticism off the bench along with Dylan Lay (St), who logged a lot of minutes at the point, were able to ice the game with a sweet left hand layup. Year 8C Trinity was impressive in winning their trial by 28 points. Tate Cole (Sc) played very well directing the offensive and Daniel Morris (St) was strong offensively and defensively. The boys implemented the new concepts from training well and worked hard on defence. Year 8D The Ds began well to lead 24-2 at half time. Trinity s point guards Olly White (Fo), Joel Matthei (WJ) and Hugo Tran (Yo) played well under pressure, making good decisions with the ball that resulted in many scoring options for the Greens. Matthew Chen (He) also dominated under the basket at both ends. Year 8E Trinity had a great introduction to their season with a strong win against Sydney High. The teamwork and communication showed by the boy is to be commended. William Orr s (Fo) work inside the key proved invaluable in securing a strong lead early in the game. Special mention must also go to Kallan Maranik (Ar) and Adam Pascale (Ke), whose defensive steals provided necessary pressure throughout the game. Year 8F The strong 30+ points win by the Fs, demonstrated their great potential for the upcoming season. Adam Stavros (Ho) and Liam Filby (Yo) hustled relentlessly both on offence and defence which inspired their teammates to follow suit. Year 8G Trinity started the year in winning fashion, running out 16-point winners over Newington Fs. Zach Gindy (Ke) was relentless in his pressure in defence, while Jordan Mikhael (Ke) was strong in his breaks down the court and driving to the basket. Great teamwork overall and unselfish play from all players provided a great platform for the upcoming season. Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 21 of 40

23 Cricket CAS 2 day Vs Barker 1st XI Day 2 of the fixture between Trinity s 1st XI and Barker College saw Trinity come out victorious in a close encounter. Trinity needing to defend 311 started off the morning in great fashion with an early wicket, putting Barker on the back foot. After the fall of the first wicket Barker were able to crawl back into the game due to some inconsistent bowling with the new ball making it difficult for wicketkeeper Jonathan Hooper (11Ar), who still produced a stellar performance behind the stumps saving multiple runs. The second session after lunch saw a more consistent bowling performance by Trinity, with pace bowler Vasi MacMillan (11Ho) picking up 2 wickets with some fantastic stump to stump bowling. With the match going down to the wire and barker needing a limited amount of runs to win the game, a beautiful run out from Sebastian Buchanan (9Sc) saw a long partnership broken. Angus Clark (11WH) was called upon, producing a sublime last spell taking the winning wicket and also finishing with 4 wickets for the game, leading the way for the Trinity pace attack. Next fixture will see Trinity take on St Aloysius away from home. 2nd XI On Saturday the 8th of October, Trinity Grammar School s 2nd XI kick-started their 2-day cricket season with a match-up against Barker. The wicket was typical for a new season, green and flat, and indications were that the batsmen would find the going far easier than the bowlers. However, the overhead conditions were changing and this made the toss decision less obvious. As it happened, Trinity s captain Sanjan Naganathan (12Ta) won the toss and elected to field. Trinity s bowlers struggled to settle into any kind of rhythm and as such their consistency wavered. This enabled Barker to establish a commanding position in the first session, leaving the Trinity boys with a lot of strategising and decision-making to do in the drinks break. This time-out seemed to do the Trinity bowlers the world of good and the middle session belonged to them as they stemmed the flow of runs and took wickets at regular intervals (Finn Ritchie (11Ke) 3-36 in 7 overs). The team was buoyed by this and their passion was evident as they attempted to swing the match in their favour. It was a far happier and relaxed Trinity 2nd XI that sat down to enjoy tea. However, Trinity would soon have their backs against the wall once more. Barker, having utilised the tea break to galvanise their efforts, came out with renewed focus and the final session of the day would see fortunes swing back in their favour. Some aggressive batting put the Trinity bowlers under pressure and the run-rate climbed as Barker surged towards a challenging total. They reached in the 47th over and duly declared, putting Trinity into bat for an award half hour. At the close of play Trinity were Day two posed an interesting challenge for the Trinity team; it was clear that a good start and batting partnerships would be vital if the score was going to be chased down, but should wickets fall there would inevitably need to be a rethink. Unfortunately, the top order fell relatively quickly and so the middle and lower order had to negotiate the aforementioned challenge. Their efforts were valiant and full of character, captain and number 6 batsman Sanjan Naganathan and number 8 batsman James Hart (11Sc) batted for almost 30 overs between them in a defiant attempt to save the match. Once Sanjan was dismissed, Saachin Simpson (11WH) joined the party and the stubborn stand continued. Ultimately, wickets did fall and the pressure mounted and in the end the Trinity team fell agonisingly close to saving the match, being all out for 106 with just 20 minutes left in the day s play. James Hart s 30 runs was the highlight of the Trinity innings. However, as close as they came, the 2nd XI are well aware that there is a lot of work to do ahead of their second fixture and consistency will be the catch phrase at training sessions 10A The picturesque Barker No.1 Oval provided a perfect setting for the first game of the 10A s two day Cricket season. After a well-controlled and extremely economical bowling performance in the early stages of the contest, Barker s middle order took control of the game and put significant pressure on the Trinity bowling attack. With Barker s total steadily increasing it took excellent bowling performances from Dillon Srikumar (10WJ) and Jordan Gupta (10WJ) with 3/29 and 3/37 respectively to pull the ascendency away from Barker. Set a total of 208 Trinity started their innings with aplomb, with George Panopoulos (10Du) racing to double figures and looking every part a batsmen in control. However, with what would turn out to be the theme of the day s play a lapse in concentration resulted in the fall of his wicket for a top score of 29. With a number of batsmen reaching double figures, the game was still very much there for the taking, however, Trinity did not Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 23 of 40

24 show enough game management skills to take the game away from Barker and ultimately concluded their innings for 137. With great potential in the side and the sting of a first up loss, the team is focused and motivated to produce a more well-rounded performance in the coming weeks. 9A Barker batted on morning one with a stiff breeze coming out of the south. The Trinity bowlers were quite tight early on restricting Barker to 42 runs in the first hour, however a breakthrough wicket eluded us. The boys heads dropped a little in the second hour and Barker capitalised on some ill-disciplined line and length bowling scoring 80 plus runs, but Trinity did manage to take 2 wickets. Trinity continued to leak runs in the second half of the day however the wickets started to flow. On the last ball of the day Barker were bowled out for a healthy total of 291. Best with the ball for Trinity were Thomas Thorpe (9Sc) 3/58 and Angus Mooney (9La) 2/43. Day 2 saw Trinity get out of the blocks very well in their run chase, with Angus Mooney and Pierce Foley (9Fo) scoring freely and putting on 115 runs in the first hour. However Foley was dismissed the last ball before drinks. After that point the runs steadily slowed and the wickets steadily fell. Trinity really needed more contributors and a few more lengthy partnership when chasing such a large total. The highlight of the innings was without a doubt Angus Mooney s Trinity were bowled out in the final hour of play, all out Day Trials Vs Sydney Boys High There were a number of excellent performances in the 1 day trial matches against Sydney Boys High School. The Year 8 age group were completely dominant, winning the 8A, B, and C fixtures. The 8As restricted Sydney Boys to a total of Peter Roser (8Ke) performed with distinction to claim 3 wickets for only 1 run. His left arm wrist spin had the batsmen bamboozled and with no answers. In reply, Trinity chased down the total with relative ease. Nikhil Kapoor (8Yo) and Nicholas Enno (8Hi) opened the batting and both boys played with great assurance. Nikhil retired on 34, while Nicholas retired on 50. Trinity passed the total with the loss of 5 wickets. In the 8B fixture, Trinity scored Fenn Hodgson-Yu (8WJ) retired on 45 and Owen Hoffman (8WH) also retired on 40. Sydney Boys were restricted to a total due to some good tight bowling and sharp fielding. In their Twenty20 fixture the 8C side batted first and posted a good total of Leo Tarbox (8Du) and Nicholas Magoulas (8Sc) shared in a fantastic 55 run partnership. Leo ended up with 38 runs of his own. Sydney Boys High could only manage a score of 7-74 and the 8C side claimed a well-deserved victory. The 9C team won a thrilling encounter. Chasing 110 for victory, they managed to chase down the target with only 1 wicket in hand. A fantastic result for all the hard work that the boys have been putting in at training. This weekend sees the 2 Day teams taking on St Aloysius and the first round of the CAS for the 1 day teams where we will be taking on Barker. Good luck to all teams. His current focus is on understanding the extent of effects that litter, particularly plastics, have on our environment and examining ways in which this can be reduced. Wednesday 9 Nov pm Ticking Bombs: The triggering of explosive volcanic eruptions. Understanding what triggers explosive volcanic eruptions is critical for understanding volcanic risk and hazards. Australia has only two active volcanoes, but as a country bound to the north and east by highly active volcanic regions (Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and New Zealand), we are vulnerable to the effects of major ashproducing volcanic eruptions. This presentation covers why we get volcanoes and what causes them to erupt, and details some of the research on volcanoes being carried out at Macquarie University. Presenter Dr Heather Handley completed a PhD on the geochemistry of Indonesian volcanoes at Durham University in the United Kingdom. Heather is a researcher at Macquarie University and is investigating the timescales of volcanic processes in Vanuatu and the Galápagos Islands. In 2012, Heather received an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship to develop our understanding of the timescales of a range of Earth-system processes. The outcomes of this research will benefit volcanic hazard mitigation and provide crucial knowledge on the rates of the effects of climate change in the landscape. 27 Wed 16 Nov pm Measuring supermassive black holes with lasers. What is a black hole? How do we measure their mass? Why are they important? This presentation will give you the answers! Presenter Dr Richard McDermid obtained his PhD from Durham University in the United Kingdom. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Leiden University in the Netherlands, before becoming a staff astronomer at Gemini Observatory in Hawaii and then came to Australia to lecture at Macquarie University. His research studies the properties of galaxies, using large telescopes to measure how their stars form, evolve and move. This gives clues to how galaxies change over time and can be used to detect super-massive black holes For more information please contact Mrs Christine Daniel Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 27 of 40

29 Cub and Scout News This week at Trinity Scouts we had a special visitor. The Chief Commissioner of Scouts Australia NSW, Mr Neville Tomkins OAM, briefly called in to visit Trinity Scouts on his way to an Australian Scout Medallion presentation at 1st Balmain Scout Group. The Chief Commissioner was interested to see a school-sponsored scout group in action and a programme that involves three different scouting sections Cub, Scout and Venturers all working together to develop skills and learn the scouting way, learning by doing. School sponsored groups are less common than they used to be, so he was interested to learn about how the group runs, how it is different from traditional local groups, what works well and what could be better. The Chief Commissioner was impressed by the leadership demonstrated by the youth members of our Group as he saw the scout patrol system in action as scout, Ryan Snowsill (8Ho), and cub-scout, William Brown (4Ta) took parade and organised the games with the Venturers, parent helpers and Leaders helping out from time to time to keep the activities moving. Just before he had to leave, the Chief Commissioner spoke to the boys about leadership, inviting friends to join scouts and reminded the group of the value of Scouts, as well as thanking the volunteer leaders and helpers. The Chief Commissioner also encouraged the boys to continue to grow and hone their leadership skills. His vision for Scouts NSW is that, Scouts NSW will be a genuinely youth led, adult supported organisation but done in a way that draws on the vital experience, skills and wisdom of all our adults. Congratulations to Adrian McManus (9He), Ryan Snowsill (8Ho), James Kaye (6Hi), Oliver Kreis (4Yo), and parent helpers Snowy and Echo, for a great effort at the State Environment Activities Camp which was held at Camp Coutts at the start of the last holidays. All had a great time learning about bush tucker from aboriginal elders; learning from SES and RFS volunteers, and about sustainable living; and undertaking environment projects in the waterways and bushland at the campsite; as well as meeting and making new friends with other scout groups. This week the scouts also had the all-important task of selecting flavours of Gelato for our Fiesta stall. At Fiesta 2016 we will be having Chocolate, Vanilla, Mango, Cookies and Cream, and Bubble Gum. We will also have a challenge that, if you are successful, will result in a free scoop being added to your cone or cup! All students interested in Scouting are welcome at 3rd Summer Hill (Trinity Grammar) the Group is currently running programs for all Trinity boys from 7.5 years up to 10.5 years (Cubs); 10 years up to 15 years (Scouts); and 15 years up to 18 years (Venturers). The Group meets in the old gymnasium at Summer Hill Campus on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 7:30pm. 33 Click here to RSVP Now More about our Guest Speaker In 1999, Munjed Al Muderis was a young surgical resident working in Baghdad when a squad of Military Police ordered the surgical team to mutilate the ears of three busloads of army deserters. The head of surgery refused, and was executed on the spot. Munjed's choices were stark - comply and breach the medical oath 'do no harm', refuse and face certain death, or flee. That day, Munjed's life changed forever. He escaped to Indonesia, where he boarded a filthy, overcrowded refugee boat, bound for Australia. Like his fellow passengers, he hoped for a new life, free from fear and oppression, but for ten months he was incarcerated in what became known as the worst of the refugee camps, Curtin Detention Centre in Western Australia. There he was known only by a number, locked in solitary confinement and repeatedly told to go back to Iraq. On 26 August 2000, Munjed was finally freed. Professor Manjed al Muderis is one of the world's leading osseointegration surgeons, transforming the lives of amputees with a pioneering technique allowing them to walk again.
