1 HEADMASTER'S BULLETIN FRIDAY 17 MARCH 2017 NEWS & NOTIFICATIONS From the Head Master The CJS Purdy Cup Retained Well Done, Chess Team On Wednesday we received official notification that our Chess team has been able to retain the Purdy Cup for another year the sixth year in succession. Congratulations to the MIC, Mr Nguyen, and the boys in emerging victorious in once again a very tight competition. CAS Swimming And Diving Thankfully, the clouds parted just long enough and at the right time for the secondary school to provide our swimmers and divers with the traditional send-off for the 86th CAS Swimming and Diving Championships held on Thursday evening. Notwithstanding this perfect timing, or the excellent preparation we have had this season, the end result saw Knox emerging as the 2017 CAS Swimming Champions a deserved victory from a fine team that has continued to lift the standard of schoolboy swimming amongst CAS Schools. I could not have been prouder of our swimmers who this year, I believe, registered the highest proportion of PBs (Personal Bests) on the night of competition, compared with our previous 13 CAS Championship teams an indication of their outstanding commitment to training and preparation throughout a long season and the excellent way in which our coaches have prepared them to give of their best on the night of the carnival. Congratulations also to our Divers who were under considerable pressure during the night, but emerged yet again victorious in claiming their 6th Championship in a row, retaining the CAS Steven Barnett Diving Shield. 2 2016/17 CAS Summer Season Of Sport Comes To A Successful End. As we now turn our attention to the forthcoming winter season, it is appropriate for me to record the School s appreciation to all our staff who were involved in coaching, managing or training summer teams across all sports. It has indeed been a remarkable season of summer sport, establishing a new record in securing six CAS Premierships/Championships. Congratulations to all members of Premiership teams and a sincere thank you for all the support our boys get from the home front as well, as this is often a neglected but necessary, vital ingredient in enabling our boys to achieve their potential Detur Gloria Soli Deo. 3 National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence Today is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. In some respects it is hard to believe that it has come to this. That, in 2017, our Australian community is unaware of the insidious effects of bullying, and that it is still such a problem that we have to have a day to draw attention to it. At Trinity, I am pleased to say, every day is a day of action against bullying and violence. As an institution we reject both explicitly and implicitly that there is ever an excuse for bullying or the use of violence as a means of resolving conflict. The reason for the School s position stems from the fundamental respect that we have that for human beings who are, each and every one, created in the image of God, a point the Chaplain made only a fortnight ago in Chapel. So, what is bullying? Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not bullying, even though they are not acceptable behaviour. And what can we do about it? As parents, teachers and carers we can continue to speak with young people about why bullying and violence are unacceptable, and continue to teach our sons and daughters that, regardless of personal feelings, every person is entitled to have their humanity respected. This is fundamental to any conversation around bullying and violence. At Trinity, this is again a reflection of the School s desire for its boys to grow in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and Man. Are there any practical strategies if you feel you are being bullied or harassed? 1. Tell the person to stop. This gives a clear indication that you do not want the behaviour to continue, that you don t see it as a joke or harmless. 2. State clearly that if the behaviour is repeated, you will inform an adult. This takes the power away from the person who is engaging in the bullying or threatening behaviour. 3. If they do not stop, avoid a confrontation, and then inform an adult. This is not dobbing. You have told the person what you are going to do if the behaviour continues, so do it. We cannot opt out of our collective responsibility. We must work together to stamp out aggressive and anti-social behaviour and empower our boys and young men (girls and young women too) to stand up against bullying and violence in all its forms. 5 ACADEMIC Academic Focus Examination Preparation It is important that study is a regular part of the life of a Trinity boy. The School s expectation for the number of hours boys engage in weekly study is clearly stated in the Record Book on page 45. With half-yearly examinations fast approaching for boys in Years 11 and 12, the following tips are an important reminder. They are reinforced throughout the year through Assembly presentations, the Life Skills programme, sessions at the Year 10 and 11 Conferences, the Study+ Programme and regular attention given in the classroom. They are also applicable for all boys, supporting one of the key aims of learning being to move newly-learned knowledge and skills from working memory to long-term memory. 1. Move learning from working memory to long-term memory Deliberate, regular practice has a significant positive impact on learning retention: reviewing classwork nightly, summarising weekly, further self-testing and other active study techniques in the weeks that follow. 2. The best study is ACTIVE study Most of us do not absorb information easily by just reading - we have to do something. Examples include: making your own notes against syllabus points (one of the most important elements of effective study) creating mind maps, flow diagrams, flash cards highlighting key passages creating your own study book making up rhymes, songs, or mnemonics testing yourself regularly by posing and answering your own questions, as well as past papers. 3. Doing practice papers is crucial, but be deliberate When doing practice papers (an important part of your study), there needs to be a deliberate focus on identified areas of weakness that need improvement. Set a goal for success, and repeat your focus using different papers, each time measuring progress towards your goal. 4. Take a break every 50 minutes 50 minutes is the peak of optimal concentration. Give yourself 5 to 10 minutes to get a drink, step outside, stretch or chat to family members. Short breaks every 50 minutes can improve focus and increase productivity during a study session. 5. Maintain a regular sleeping pattern To function at your best with maximum alertness and energy levels, week-in-week-out and especially on exam day, a regular sleeping routine is crucial. Cramming in a little more knowledge beyond midnight the night before an exam can lead to significant fatigue the next morning. A regular routine is also important during holiday breaks leading up to exams where sleeping in and going to bed late can affect concentration and focus throughout the day. 6. Maintain physical exercise After sitting at a desk for long periods of time, your body can start to shut down and reduce your energy levels. Incorporating physical activity into your weekly schedule helps to maintain your energy levels. 7. Have an appropriate study location Lighting should be bright, but not too bright, and focused on your work areas. The room should be well ventilated and the temperature cool but not cold. Ensure you have all the materials you need close by, and in an organised state. Remove all distractions and background noise, especially mobile phones, social media and most music. Avoid lying down on your bed to study as you have trained your body for many years to associate lying down with resting and sleeping. 8. Use your computer wisely Your computer may be needed to access resources and develop your study notes. However, it is vital that all distractions such as , social media and alert systems are turned off at all times. Computer extensions, such Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 5 of 55

6 as the free stay focused, can assist with this if you need help. Research suggests it can take more than 20 minutes for the brain to fully re-immerse itself in an activity following an interruption. 9. Beat procrastination Make yourself accountable by setting study goals, or a to-do list, for each study session and reward yourself if you achieve your goals. 10. Consider a study group A study group of three to five can be a great way to engage in active study. A good time to meet is about five to seven days before your exam. It is important you meet for a purpose, ensuring everyone brings their questions and notes so you can test each other, teach each other, provide feedback to each other, and help fill in holes in study notes and understanding. 11. Consider the School s Study+ programme Study+ is an extended-hours study programme offering students the opportunity to share a meal with the Boarding Community and access academic mentoring from Old Boys under the supervision of Library and teaching staff. Students meet for dinner in the Dining Hall at 5:30pm before moving to the Arthur Holt Library for a two hour study session from 6pm-8pm. Interested students are encouraged to book multiple sessions to help develop positive study habits. Please contact the Arthur Holt Library for further details. 12. Last few days Focus on your weak areas in the last few days before your exam. 13. The morning of an exam Eat protein-rich foods which can lead to greater mental alertness, including eggs, whole-grain cereal, lowfat milk, porridge and sugar-free muesli. Avoid foods that are high in sugar, including certain cereals, soda drinks, chocolates, lollies, etc. These can give you a sugar high initially, but then lead to a significant low during your exam. Drink enough water before and during your exam just to stay hydrated. Avoid people and things that you know will stress you out and cause you to lose focus. 14. Create a study schedule Time is precious, and the key to maximising time is a well-structured and balanced study schedule. Not only will this help you get organised, it will also reduce your stress and put your mind at ease that things are generally under control. Include breaks every 50 minutes for 5 to 10 minutes Allow for physical activity Study during hours that you have maximum energy Allow for meal times and time with your family Get plenty of sleep (around 8 hours) Eliminate any unproductive time Sharing study plans with family members can help optimise time by being transparent about planned meal times, break periods, and subjects where help can be given from family members with quizzes and questioning. A study plan template was sent to all Senior School boys this week and can be accessed by clicking here. 15. The key to academic success The strategies boys employ in their final years of school are critical to their success. It is important they focus on what they can control. The key to academic success isn t ability - it s effort and perseverance. Jason Cheers Academic Dean Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 6 of 55

7 News from the Arthur Holt Library Proof-Reading Service This week brings another initiative from the Arthur Holt Library our brand new Proof-Reading Service for students. Here s what an interested student needs to do. 1. Book a meeting time with a librarian. Booking times are available before school and at lunchtimes. Bookings can be made by ing librarian@trinity.nsw.edu.au, or in person at the library. 2. Submit the work for consideration to the Librarian. Work should be attached as a file to the booking , or dropped off at the Library well in advance of meeting time. 3. Attend the meeting with the Librarian who will correct and explain spelling mistakes and inconsistencies in grammar usage. 4. Make the suggested amendments to the work before the final submission to their teacher. By offering this service, we aim to help students go on to make their good work better. However, it should be noted that we are unable to comment on the ideas, concepts or general errors of fact contained in student work. 8 SPORT Basketball vs Cranbrook 1st V Trinity finish in style to go through undefeated for the first time since The Firsts capped off a great season in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd to win comfortably against Cranbrook by 28 points. In their last CAS game, the five Seniors stepped up dominating in all areas with Ryan Maranik (12Ar) doing what he does best, shutting down Cranbrook s leading scorer and Captain and picking up three quick baskets in the opening period to see the Greens lead Trinity were in total control at the end of the first quarter (29-6) with Tom Mackenzie (12WJ) a power-house on the offensive glass. Ethan Bateman (9WJ) nailed a huge 3, while Jed Keogh s (12Ar) exceptional form in recent weeks continued in the second period to finish with 12 points for the half and Trinity in control (44-30). After the break the Firsts went into full swing with Davo Hickey (12Ke) and Jake Kerry (12Ho) on fire from the 3-point line, combining for seven swishes in the third period. Earvin Dizon (9Ta) also got in on the action with some strong defence-nice finishes. Luke Nichol (9He) and Richard Ziade (10Mu) kept Trinity s relentless defensive pressure on high alert as Trinity blew the game wide open to lead by 26 points (74-48) with one quarter left. The celebrations began with Trinity enjoying the final minutes as Davo Hickey sent down another thunderous dunk to the delight of the home crowd and it was smiles all round with the A.V Smith Shield staying at Summer Hill for the second straight season! 11 opening four points, while Nicholas Driessen s (12Yo) dominance around the basket continued with some strong finishes and big rebounds. Justin Jasa (11Ho) and Cooper Young (12He) combined well to help extend the Greens lead heading into the main break (28-15). Ben LoRusso (12He) and Pat Di Giannantonio (12Ho) provided two quick baskets to start the second half, before Cranbrook gained the momentum. A couple of steadying plays from Luke Gabriel (11Hi) and Thomas Corias (11Hi) stalled their Eastern Suburbs counterparts, before a big block by Andrew Jamieson-Grigg (12Ho) fired up the Trinity faithful. Dave Carreon (11St) was again solid picking up a bag of points, before the Year 12s Harry Dunn (12Mu) and Di Giannantonio iced the game from the free throw line to give Trinity another victory and a very creditable 7-2 record and second place for the season. 13 Nick Driessen (12Yo) powers through the Cranbrook defence for an important two points 3rd V It was an outstanding game to end to the season for the 3rds, with a huge 3 from Edison Chan (12WJ) from the corner giving Trinity an emotional two-point win. Zac Saboune (12Hi) led the point scoring with a game high of 8 points, but what was pleasing for Coach Daniels was that every boy contributed with points against a solid Cranbrook team. Special mention must also go to the strong work on the boards from Lukas Phipps (12Fo) and Lachlan Zeng (11Yo). 4th V The Physical 4ths made it eight straight victories in a dominant display and capturing an impressive unofficial Premiership for the School. Once again the bullet break offence from Trinity set the platform, with much improved Jonathon Roseworn (11WJ) leading the way with explosive moves to the basket and some knockdown shooting from the perimeter. Martin Song (11Du), Matthew Lang (12La) and Ricky Chan (11Sc) were also in the zone, offensively finishing with season highs. The intensity level from this group and their ability to Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 13 of 55

14 sustain for an entire game each week has made them a pleasure to watch each Saturday. 5th V The Mighty 5ths finished the season on a high with a solid seven-point victory. J erry Ren (11Ke) was once again strong on the boards and showed plenty of touch around the basket to pick up key points for the Greens. Jacob Taylor-Tighe (11Ta) always brings energy which gives Trinity the momentum at important times of the match. Anthony Nguyen (12WJ) left his best for last, providing plenty of offensive punch to give Trinity the edge down the stretch and a positive season with a very creditable record of 7-2. Year 9A The 9As played a great game to finish out the season on a strong note. Trinity were led by Bailey Plummer (Du) and his ability to find the basket. He took over the game in the second half with his versatility to score from everywhere on the floor. Asher Linkous (Yo) did a great job running his team and controlling the pace of the game. Other solid contributions came Joel Passerini (Hi) and Malachi Hawkes (WJ) with their intense defence throughout from start to finish. Year 9E Trinity were fantastic in their last game, coming away with winners by ten points. With full complement of players, the Greens applied pressure throughout the match. Jacob Alha (Ho) top scored again with 7 points, while Diego Hernandez-Castellanos (WJ) was just behind with 6 points. Michael Nguyen (Ar) and Anton Markovic (Sc) provided a strong defensive line which all but stopped Cranbrook s ability to score in the second half. With the season at an end, it is pertinent to commend the boys on how they have progressed throughout the season and established true sense of esprit de corps Year 8A Although down 0-4 early, Trinity were challenged by their Coach BJ Carter to 'pull up their socks' and their reply was outstanding, as the starters set the tone for the rest of the game. Theo Kidd (WJ), Hayden Johnson (WH), Jamie Christopolous (Ar) and Jack Casimir (WH) were dominant at both ends with their physical play, while the back-court led by Tyrese Proctor (Fo) and Thomas Buvac (WJ) orchestrated the offence with precision. Deonte Williams (Yo) and Tate Cole (Sc) looked to attack the basket at every opportunity, while Bertie Alcock (WJ) and Daniel Jackson (Ta) were fundamentally sound on each touch of the basketball. A great way to finish an impressive undefeated season by this talented group! Year 8C Trinity finished the season on a winning note, with Alistair Roseworn (WJ) having a great game offensively. Tyson Jackson (Fo) and Daniel Morris (St) were beasts under the ring offensively and defensively. Year 8D Vangeli Tsintominas (Sc) had a strong game, scoring 8 points, while Adam Pascale (Ke) constantly found open teammates with some slick passing. Brian Tran (Ho) and William Orr (Fo) were strong around the basket as the Greens ran out winners by 23 points. Year 8E Lachlan Dock s (Ta) impact in transition at both ends of the court was paramount to Trinity getting into the groove after a slow start. Sam Thanopoulos (Hi) had a strong game inside the key, while strong defensive pressure from both Thomas Calabro (Ar) and Lucas Pezzano (Fo) stifled any chance of a Cranbrook revival, so that the 8Es finished on a high winning by 18 points. Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 14 of 55

15 Year 8F Noah Sinozic (Ar) was a menace at both ends of the court for the Greens, with his constant defensive pressure and offensive prowess. Jim O Brien (WJ) and James Pau (Ta) took full advantage of their height, securing many rebounds and scoring crucial points. Ryan Tamerji s (Mu) constant hustle proved vital as Trinity after a slow start pulled away for a great win. Year 8G The 8Gs were matched up against the higher ranked 8Fs from Newington but no-one told this to the Trinity boys as they dominated the whole match! Christopher Esposito (Ke) was dominant in the paint, while fast breaks from Zachary Terzopolous (Mu) and Zachariah Gindy (Ke) saw the score tick over regularly. Year 8H It was a tight match against Newington's 8Gs which had both teams locked at at halftime. The second half started with John Lynch (Yo) and Alec Brew (Ta) scoring the next 10 points of the match and securing a comfortable win for the boys in Green. Year 7A An amazing game to finish an undefeated season for Trinity. Relentless defence right from the jump led to consecutive stops and quick scores. Jayden Woods (Ar) led the way with a very impressive 30 points for the match, while Bailey Chambers (Ta) and James Andrews (La) high percentage shooting throughout the game gave them each high numbers in scoring. Trinity s big men in Cristian Farr (Mu) and James Oeser (La) limited Cranbrook s second chance looks through dominating the rebounds at the defensive end. A late barrage from Ethan Hunter (WH) and George Robson (He) enabled Trinity to move their total into the triple digits for the game. Year 7B Proving just how effective a Team they can be, the 7Bs showed patience and attentiveness to attack at the right times. Elias Sidiropolous (St) led the way with 24 points, most of which came from his numerous offensive rebounds. Continued defensive intensity from Trinity s other bigs, Alexander Saba (WJ), Sami Hatoum (St) and Jason Zong (WH) restricted Cranbrook to only 16 points in the second half. A late surge of baskets by James Keaye (Ho) allowed Trinity to run away with the game to record a 46-point win. Year 7D In a fitting last game and with the entire crowd on the edge of their seats to see if the Greens could maintain their undefeated record, this young group didn t let them down as they rallied late to win by nine anxious points. The assertion and hustle was led by big man Paulo Tauiliili-Pelesasa (He), with evasive ball handling by Daniel Cattana (St) giving Trinity the momentum when needed. Year 7E The 7Es were determined to end their season on a high note. Their determination from the get go, quickly gained a lead early in the match. Rupert Dobbin (Du) helped Trinity maintain their lead with his relentless defence, but it was Hunter Goldsbrough (Fo) who stood out in the game, scoring 14 points. A great 9-point victory to finish off the season! Year 7G Despite starting the match brightly with plenty of possession and good court movement, Trinity let their lead slip to within just one point with about five minutes to go. This was the cue for Sean Song (Ar) to drive into the key and convert four key baskets to put a Trinity win beyond doubt. Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 15 of 55

16 Year 7H Trinity completely dominated Shore, with an impressive 70-2 victory. Considering the team only had seven players available, it was a very impressive display of accurate shooting, strong defence and great rebounding. All players had a superb game and contributed to the score, but special mention goes to Adam Makki (La), who sank shots from everywhere and Daniel Akpinar (Ho) and Hussein Choker (He), who never stopped running and worked hard in both attack and defence. 19 Cricket vs Cranbrook Saturday 11th March 1st XI TGS def Cranbrook 80 Our final match against Cranbrook ended up being a grand final. The CAS Premiership was on offer for us. All we had to do was execute our plans the way we had done throughout the season. The boys knew what was at stake and they started the day accordingly with a sharp and energetic warm- up. We lost the toss and were sent in to bat on a deck that was conducive to bowling. Cranbrook were able to get good seam movement off the pitch, as well as enough swing through the air. Combine this with a touch of uneven bounce from one end, our two openers Raghavan Selvaratnam (12La) and Mark Dedes (12St) found the going tough. Liam Scott (11We) upon arrival to the crease looked to increase the run rate and made a notable effort to build a platform. He succeeded, as he has done so often, as he 'monstered' the bowling attack. He made it look as though it was man vs boy. He played some thrashing drives and powerful pulls in a valuable 52. Even though Liam was able to dominate, he was not able to capitalise fully, and as a result the run rate slowed. However, our goal was to have wickets in hand for an onslaught towards the end of the innings. The middle overs were challenging, but Tane Edmed (11Fo) and Matthew Turner (11Ho) dug deep and worked hard. At the second drinks break, we were off 34 overs. This was reasonable, considering the conditions. However, the topic of conversation was to basically make an attempt to 'up the ante'. Well, after drinks, this is what we exactly witnessed. It was a masterclass batting display by both Matthew and Tane, putting on a superb partnership of 116 runs. Tane was working hard finding the gaps, running quick singles and rotating the strike. He punished the bad ball and played a pivotal supportive role for Matthew. Tane knew that his innings was essential to the team as we needed a 'rock' to bat through. His innings of 51 was worth its weight in gold. Matthew Turner has been a revelation this season. His batting has improved remarkably. He has always had a fine technique and a good knowledge of the game, with a solid skills set. However, now if we add a bit of strength and power to his game, he is a force to be reckoned with. His innings of 78 not out was quite simply, brilliant. It was just what the team needed. He played a faultless innings. He demonstrated that he can't be sledged or intimidated by opponents and that he possesses a vast array of strokes. His pull shot was majestic, his cut shot was sharp and his drives were elegant. He hit the boundary on several occasions but also worked hard at finding the gaps and taking cheeky singles. This would be an innings he should remember for many years to come. To finish the innings, Angus Clark (11WH) and Vasi MacMillan (11Ho) played unselfish roles edging us over the 200 mark. In the last 16 overs we scored over 6 an over. A marvellous effort! With a formidable total on the board, it could have been easy to become complacent. But with the right mindset amongst the team, we realised that with our attack, the premiership was on offer if we could bowl in the right areas. We set ourselves two goals at the start of lunch: 1. Assume we were defending 150 and bowl/field accordingly. 2. Don't go back for a second helping of chicken schnitzel at lunch! Our bowling innings was faultless. On a pitch that was improving as the day went by, we were still able to get good movement. For starters, we bowled no wides or no balls. This tightened the screws for certain and made runs hard to come by. Our line and lengths were perfect. Vasi MacMillan and Bradley Uglow (11He) once again did a good job opening up. They have formed a potent opening bowling pair. Liam Scott 2-16 bowled well capturing two wickets in quick succession. Many thanks to Tane who took the two catches in slip. They were sharp chances that he made look easy. Sebastian Buchanan (9Sc) 1-22 contributed well in the middle overs as did Kenneth Chu (10Mu) 1-9. I was very pleased with Kenneth as he continues to bowl a good length, and is known to create chances. However, we can't leave Matthew Turner out of the game. With the ball he shone. He captured 3-15 with his leg spin bowling. It was an accurate spell that was proven to be too tough to handle by our opponents. To top off his man of the match performance, Matthew initiated and skilfully executed a direct hit run out to dismiss Cranbrook's best batsman. At this stage we knew the game was ours. It was fitting that Tane took the last catch of the match out on the boundary, which again, he made look easy. Our fielding during this match was outstanding. The entire team was on the ball. They were aggressive at the right times, swift, pantherlike and energetic. Ameer Dimeglio (12La) did a good job behind the stumps, keeping it tight and setting the right standard. It was a clinical display by the boys. Dismissing Cranbrook for 80 what more could be said! It was a pleasure to watch, not only this match, but the entire season. This team consists of boys from four year levels. The way they have gelled together has been remarkable and this is mostly due to the leadership of the team. Mark Dedes has done a fantastic job as captain. He has been easy to work with and should be proud of the team's achievement. Congratulations team, on winning a CAS undefeated premiership. 20 1st XI Captain Mark Dedes (12St) leads the team victory song after securing the CAS premiership. 2nd XI Trinity 2nd XI faced Cranbrook for the last game of the season and for the Year 12s last game of cricket in green and white. Trinity won the toss and elected to bat, getting off to a rocky start, losing some early wickets. But Jonathan Hooper (11Ar) coming in at number five steadied the ship with his third half century of the season. Trinity ended their innings all out for 126 needing a strong bowling display to defend this score. The opening and first change bowlers bowled tight lines to the opening Cranbrook batsmen, beating the edge on multiple occasions. However, by drinks Trinity hadn t managed to break the opening partnership, even with Cranbrook well below the required run rate. But Lachlan Hayward s (12Fo) nippy bowling after drinks bought about well needed wickets ending his spell with the figures of With 8 over left in the game Cranbrook required a run rate of just over 5 with 4 wickets in hand. Trinity s bowler came on again and bowled tight lines for the second time that innings but Cranbrook s number 5 found a way the clear the boundary, keeping the rate within reach. In the last over Cranbrook required 10 runs to win the match, with Captain Rushad Parekh (12Yo) coming on to bowl the final over. The first ball of the over was one of his infamous slower ball which captured the wicket of the danger batsmen. He continued his over getting two more wickets and on a hat-trick ball on his last ball for Trinity, he finished with 3-5. The 2nd XI rejoiced as they finished their season with an emphatic win by 10 runs, and the Year 12s finishing their Trinity cricket on a high note. Sanjan Naganathan (12Ta) 10A The 10As ventured to Hordern Oval to keep their hopes of an undefeated one day season alive. Missing their skipper Blaise Mckee (10Ar), Luke Powell (10Ho) stepped in as honorary Captain for the toss and was successful, and Trinity elected to bat. Trinity did not bat well and found themselves five wickets down with very little on the board. The tailenders did their best to add as many runs as possible, however, it ended with Trinity all out for 76. The opening attack, as they had done all season, bowled with great pace. Cranbrook appeared to be comfortable seeing off the opening bowlers and were traveling at less than two runs per over. Surprisingly, this continued on throughout the first session and Cranbrook were 1/32 at drinks. After a positive team talk and some refocusing in the field, Trinity struck early with two quick wickets. You could feel the enthusiasm lift and the boys were supporting each other and feeling like the win was a possibility. Then came the introduction of Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 20 of 55

21 Jack Bermingham (10Mu) and Luke Powell, both bowled exceptionally well, particularly Jack who took 3/0 at one stage. Cranbrook had fallen to 8/71 and needed five more runs to win. Bang! Bang!-- and victory was Trinity s! The last two wickets fell for four runs and the undefeated one day season was achieved. This was a well-deserved finish to the season as the team has worked hard on their skills and remained focussed at training. William Campbell 9A Cranbrook batted first and were dismissed for 88. They started very slowly as the wicket was a little tricky due to the rain. Although they managed to keep wickets in hand early they crumbled after drinks when they had to dramatically increase the run rate. Best of the Trinity bowling was Matthew Uglow (9He) 2/13, Sanjay Anandarajah (9Du) 2/11 and Patrick Fouracre (9WH) 2/11. Trinity got off to a shaky start in its run chase and were 3/24 after six overs. However a 60 run partnership between Angus Mooney (9La) (10no) and Luca Dimeglio (9La) (53no) steadied the ship and ensured a convincing win for the men in green. Andrew Payne 9B Trinity batted first and reached their highest total all season scoring 223. Joshua Yeoh (9Sc) scored 90no and Ben Newall (9Yo) scored 61. Both batsmen looked comfortable and scored runs with ease in an excellent display of batting. In reply, Shore reached a total of 132 for the loss of 6 wickets. After initially struggling to control the swinging ball David Wang (9WJ) returned fine figures of 4/21 off 6 overs with some excellent bowling showing pace and control, skittling the wickets on 3 occasions. A great way to finish the season for the 9Bs. Ben Cook 8B Trinity s 8B side continued their good run of form this season by accounting for Cranbrook in comprehensive fashion. Bowling first, Trinity knocked Cranbrook over for only 58 runs. Owen Peck (8Fo) was the star for the team with the ball in hand. He returned the fantastic figures of The run chase was never an issue and Trinity managed to chase the total down for the loss of only 3 wickets. 8C The 8Cs arrived at Hammond Park early for their final match of the season against Cranbrook. With two tough losses in the previous rounds, it would have been easy for the players to 'just go through the motions'. However, this was not seen on the day. Players arrived early and were focused. Trinity won the toss and elected to bat. The Opening Batsmen, Noah Da Silva (8We) and Leo Tarbox (8Du) showed great composure playing out most of the first session before drinks, keeping a respectable run-rate. Asher Tarbox (8Du) continued to show his improvement with the bat and ensured a solid total of 94 by the end of the innings. Realising that a tight fielding session was required, the Trinity men focused on second-efforts and getting the ball to an end as quickly as they could. With the ball, the twins opened the bowling and caused problems for the Cranbrook batsmen with their recently learned seam-bowling. Hamza Rauf (8Mu) followed with very tight bowling lines keeping the pressure on. Jack Henderson s (8Ta) spell saw multiple wickets fall, he managed to bowl a batsman and then with the support of a tight field from Aaron Chung (8Hi), Ashley Wong (8We), Anek Banik (8Sc), Yorke Bodecott (8He) and Callum McLeod (8Ta), the team celebrated with a couple of run-outs. Abhi Popuri (8Sc) once again showed his masterclass with figures of 1/0 after 2-overs. Gabriel Willis (8 Ho) was a brick-wall behind the stumps ensuring byes were kept at a minimum and showing improvements in his concentration by keeping for all 20-overs. With a win in sight, the Captain, Max Santhiran (8He), bowled the final over to finish the innings and the season on a well-round team performance. Trinity 4/94 defeated Cranbrook 6/41. Congratulations to all 8C squad members on a fantastic season. Kai Ikeuchi 7C Last Saturday the 7C played a game of cricket against Cranbrook. It was a very challenging game. TGS won the Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 21 of 55

22 toss and elected to bat. After 20 overs TGS set a modest total of 61 for the loss of 8 wickets. This left the team with plenty of work to do in the field. As a team we really felt we could restrict Cranbrook and come away with a win. We were up for the fight. We knew they needed 3 runs an over but were confident we could limit their scoring. On the last ball of Cranbrook innings, with the scores tied, Nick bowled a beautiful ball and which was hit straight to a fielder. TGS ran the Cranbrook batsmen out on the last ball leaving the match a draw. Both teams went on to play a super over. TGS bowled first and Nick Keogh (7Ta), bowled another beautiful over and we kept them down to 5 runs. TGS needed at least one run a ball. After 3 balls we lost a wicket and needed 3 runs to win. On the last ball we needed 2 runs to win and William Maistry (7Ta) hit a four. We won. I'm so happy to be a part of this amazing match. Oliver Walker (7Fo) This round of fixtures marks the end of the CAS season and it was one that was very successful for Trinity. The School s overall win: loss ratio sat at 52% and this is the best ratio in recent history. To have the 1st XI go through the season as undefeated CAS premiers, as well as undefeated T20 premiers shows just how dominant they were. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all players for the way that they have conducted themselves on the playing field and at training, as well as all the parents who have given up a good deal of their Saturday to support their son s playing Cricket. I would also like to publicly acknowledge all of the hard work that the Cricket coaches have put into their sides this season. The care they have shown for the boys has been exemplary. 25 Tennis Round 10 Last weekend marked round 10 and the completion of the CAS Winter season. Overall it has been a very successful season for the majority of teams and players. Last weekend s results were no exception with the Trinity Tennis cohort winning 64% of the matches contested against Cranbrook. All of the Opens and Year 10 teams managed wins in what was probably the high light of the round. Other winning teams included the 9Bs and the 8Bs, Cs, Ds. The 1st 1V finished the season as they had started and that was in dynamic fashion. The strong and united team disposed of their opposition quickly to the tune of 7 sets to 1 at the Trinity Tennis Centre. This victory resulted in the team remaining undefeated over the course of the season finishing on 91 points, 13 points ahead of nearest rival Knox. The team, who had secured the Premiership after round 9, could have easily surpassed the magical 100 point mark if it were not for the 4 missed rounds due to wet weather and extreme heat cancellations. The squad must be congratulated for being in a league of their own this season with the worst win being 7 sets to 1. No other team came within cooee of our boys this season! The Captain of Tennis Brendan Sleiman (12Ta) played a pivotal role in the success of the team with his combination of great leadership and solid groundstrokes. Brendan was called upon on numerous occasions to play up in the 1st 1V due to injuries within the team and on each occasion rose to the task with aplomb. He played with his heart on his sleeve every single time and never left the court with energy to spare. Likewise, Dario Kmet (10Ke), was an invaluable team member who played the entirety of the season in the number 1 position. He finished the season undefeated and as a result secured the number 1 position in the CAS team and gained selection in the CIS team. It has been a pleasure to watch Dario mature over the course of the season not only as a player but also as a young man. I wish him well in his quest to gain selection in the NSW Pizzey Cup team which takes place next week in Bathurst. Mathew Nedanovski (10La) who played in the number 2 position was rock solid all season and deserves recognition for his great sportsmanship in all fixtures. His combination of deft touch and extreme power mesmerized crowds and intimidated opponents from start to finish. Mathew also gained selection in the CAS team. James McCabe (9st) our youngest talent was entirely dependable as usual. He displayed a ferocious competitiveness and never say die attitude that belied his tender years. James was the 3rd member of the team to be acknowledged by the CAS selection committee and will play in the Representative team this coming Wednesday. The final key of the team was Luca Kmet (12Ke) who proved he is just not a good footballer but rather a great all round sportsman. Luca brought a much needed level of maturity to the squad and demonstrated that there is always more than one way to skin a cat. His unconventional old fashion grips and consistent ground strokes allowed him to be a formidable opponent in all encounters. The dominance of the team is further evidenced by the fact that our top 3 players who competed in all of the matches did not drop 1 single set of singles or doubles over the course of the season. Congratulations to all 1st 1V players on a wonderful season! The 1st IV was not the only undefeated team this season. The 4th 1V under the tutelage of Mr Lucas managed this feat in their stride. Mr Ackman s 6th IV also displayed team work and resilience to emerge undefeated. Finally, every Year 10 team, went through without losing a single match much to the delight of coaches Mr William Henry and Ms Danielle Calvi. The final statistic that warrants mention was the overall win rate of 68% (all teams combined) which is an excellent indication of how well our boys performed in the strong Summer season. This could not have been achieved without the tireless dedication of all coaching staff. Well done to all players and coaches this season! 26 Undefeated 1st 1V Premiership Team 10As And 10Bs In the final fixture of the Summer Season both the 10A and 10Bs maintained their winning form away to Cranbrook. All the doubles sets were comprehensively won which gave Trinity a significant advantage leading into the singles. The 10Bs continued to demonstrate their dominance in the competition only dropping four games in the entre fixture. This presented them with a crushing win in terms of games - 36 to 6. The 10As result was not so one sided although Trinity still prevailed with a commanding 5 Sets to 1 victory. Auspiciously, it was in the final set, of the final match of the season where one of the most thrilling and captivating matches took place. Jonathan Karagiannis (10Hi), keen to maintain his trend of winning, found himself down 2,5. The set had many moments of high quality shot making that produced hugely entertaining rallies. Jonathan clawed his way back to 5,5. However, now at the business end of the set, there were moments where both players (and their supporters) were affected by the tension. Each boy had opportunities to win the set outright, but a nerve breaking tiebreak was eventually going to decide this match. Jonathan emerged the stronger player under terrific tension and won 8 points to 6 in the tiebreak a great comeback. This was a really satisfying win, with both players showing true sportsmanship during the after-match handshake both warmly acknowledging each other s contribution to this epic season finale. All 10A and 10Bs players deserve high praise for the quality of tennis and sportsmanship demonstrated this season. Special mention should go to Alex Valiozis (10Yo), John Sarris (10Ta) and Henry Meyer (10Sc) who all maintained an undefeated singles record throughout the entire 10A and Bs season. William Henry 10As and 10Bs Coach 9As And 9Bs The sun shone last week on what proved to be our most successful round of the competition. Congratulations to all in the 9As who fought to the end to equalise the sets at three apiece. Sadly we lost on the countback, but this was a definite improvement on our first round encounter. The 9Bs went on to record another close win, capitalising on a forfeit from the opposition. Special commendation goes to Luke Selim (9Ho) and Alexander Mallis (9Sc) on their convincing Doubles win. They combined well and displayed some intelligent tennis. Selwyn Chang (9Ar) displayed great concentration and determination to secure a gripping win in his see- Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 26 of 55

27 sawing Singles match. His never say die attitude is commendable. Similarly, Alexander Mallis, displayed great grit and tenacity to finally defeat his Singles opponent. Daniel Mircevski (9St) played a brilliant singles to easily outclass his opponent, winning 6-0. It was pleasing to note some solid serving and ground strokes from Scott Lee (9St) and Christian Nguyen (9Ho). Toby Brockhouse (9Ho) and Harrison Waters (9We) combined quite well in an entertaining doubles but unfortunately could not quite find a way to overcome their Singles opponents. Jessica Spratt 9As and 9Bs 8As And 8Bs After a successful second half of the season the 8As and Bs travelled to Cranbrook home courts at Dangar. For the As the tie started very evenly with the doubles poised at 1-1 with our second pairing of Richard Collins (8Mu) and Werner Porath (9WH) fighting for the win. Unfortunately, that was where our winning run ended, with all the singles matches going Cranbrook s way as they proved way too strong on this occasion. The Bs started in similar fashion with the tie at 1-1 after both doubles sets. Liam Ling (8La) was unfortunate not to get the victory in a tight match while Elias Chahine (8Ke) came away while with an outstanding victory 6-2. On behalf of myself and Brendan Bechara I'd like to congratulate the whole Year 8 grade on a thoroughly enjoyably season. We both immensely enjoyed working with all the boys and watching them all grow into fine young tennis players. Ben Cassen 8As and 8Bs Coach 7As And 7Bs It had been a disjointed season of tennis full of cancellations due to extreme heat and rain but the boys were eager to finish things off with the final round against Cranbrook. After three weeks of training, sheer energy was flowing through the Trinitarians as they stepped on court at Haberfield. The As were seen grinding away from the start as they commenced the fixture, with both doubles matches going over time: a true demonstration of the intensity and grit that all the boys play with. The flamboyance and utter skill of Max Nguyen (7Yo) and Dylan Guler (7Wi) was on display, but the boys were unlucky to go down 4-6 in a battle between four of the best Year 7 players in the CAS competition. Next door, the always consistent Spyrodon Konidaris (7Sc) and the fearless Josh Alha (7Ho) played a vigorous match, battling it out to the very end. Unfortunately, the gentlemen were defeated in a tiebreaker by their Eastern Suburbs counterparts. Dylan and Josh went on to record comfortable victories in the singles (6-4 and 6-3, respectively) but the overall fixture was unable to be finished due to time restrictions, leaving the result as an unofficial victory to Cranbrook. Jeremy McKeown (7Fo) and Christian Bieri (7Yo) led an ebullient Bs outfit, displaying their passion for the sport through Jeremy s authoritative hitting and Christian s determination to chase every ball down. They secured an assertive 6-4 victory. Their teammates, Bailey Yates (7Ta) and James Perkin (7Yo), faced a tenacious Cranbrook pairing and suffered a 2-6 loss, but this was not a sound reflection of the tenacity exhibited by our boys. As the day continued, Cranbrook proved too strong in the singles matches, although time restrictions also forced the contest to be cut short. As with the A s, this granted Cranbrook the win in a wellspirited fixture. This summer tennis season has allowed the young men to enhance their skills and showcase what they are capable of, proving to be a very talented bunch. Best of luck with the winter season boys. 28 Volleyball vs O.T.U Trinity Defeated The OTU 3-0 (25-22, 29-27, 26-24) Last Saturday was the annual OTU Volleyball fixture. The 1st VI have lost this particular game to the Old Boys 6 times in the last 8 years! We knew that it would be another tough encounter with former Vice Captains of Volleyball Jonathan Webster (13/12WJ), Angus Webster (16/12WJ) and Nikolas Miljkovic (09/12We) turning up ready to compete at the high level they did as students. The first set saw Sam Webster (11/12WJ) and Jared Phillis (16/12Mu) dominate at the net for the Old Boys, but the 1st VI clawed their way back into the set with very consistent serving from Hugh Sixsmith (12Sc) and effective blocking from Thomas Mackenzie (12WJ). In the second set, the Old Boys started off strongly with Jonathan Webster dominating at the net, making life very difficult for the current 1st VI! At the business end of the set however, both Ben Wheen (12Fo) and Daniel Gabriel (12Hi) set very well under pressure to Peter Braga (12Du) and Matthew Rorie (12Fo), who put the ball away consistently to take the set in a very close score of In the 3rd set, once again the Old Boys had a very good start with Nikolas Miljkovic and Angus Webster dominating both at the net and in serving, to go ahead by 5 points. The 1st VI once again came back with outstanding defence by Eliot Kern (11WJ), great blocking by Oliver Arkell (11WJ) and very consistent spiking from rookies Nicholas Tsiakos (10We), Kristof Btryndum(12Sc) and Ken Zhang (12We) to take the set. The 1st VI prevailed in the end in 3 very tight sets, playing some of the best volleyball that I have seen in my 14 years as Director of Volleyball at Trinity. Congratulations to all the players involved, both current students and Old Boys. I would also like to thank Dean Bozionelos (12Ta) and Jonah Newman(12WJ) for helping out on the day in the setting department. 32 Water Polo Final Week With most grades finishing last week, it was only the 16Bs, 14Bs, 13As and 13Bs who had fixtures this week. The 16Bs had been undefeated heading into this final round but, disappointingly, lost to Reddam House, This must not take away from what has been a good season, but is a lesson that we have to train hard right to the end if we are to continue to improve. The 14s continued their late season improvement to finish with a morale boosting 12-4 win against Barker College. I am pleased for this team because they have held together and steadily developed and this was a nice way to finish the season. The 13As were well beaten by a very skilful Newington College team. I understand that many of the Newington boys have been playing club water polo for a couple of years, and the difference in skill and experience was very clear. Mr Shagaev is very keen for Trinity boys to go along and sign up for Wests, Balmain, Sydney Uni or Drummoyne and play some matches to build up that base of knowledge, fitness and skill. 33 Golf Final Round Avondale Golf Club Independent Golf Series, Final Round, 11/03/2017, Avondale Golf Club The Trinity Golf Team headed to Pymble last Saturday feeling somewhat melancholic. This had nothing to do with the fact that the silverware was out of our grasp, nor did it have anything to do with playing on the superb Avondale Golf Club. Rather it was the fact that the team of four included three fabulous young Year 12 Trinity men who were about to strut the fairways for the last time in the Trinity livery! Nathan Finn (12Ar), Peter Kostoglou (12Sc) and Jason Kim (12Sc) have been fine ambassadors for the School, always displaying superb etiquette, being excellent company on course and always fighting extremely hard in their matches. I was particularly chuffed that Peter won his first match for the School in his last, and in convincing fashion too, as he dismantled his Knox opponent 4 and 3. Unfortunately, the tables were turned in the other match in that group as Jason lost his match 4 and 3. Nathan also ended up toughing it out in his last outing in the Green and White as he won a close encounter on the last 1 up. Ejun Choi (11Ho), normally has nerves of steel and he fought to the death in his match. However, the pressure got the better of him; possibly the noise from the grandstand, or lack of it, exacerbated the tension as he choked on his approach and left the door open for his Knox rival to snaffle a last minute, gasping win, Ejun losing 1down. In the wash-up it was another fabulous season of Golf on many of the sublime fairways in Sydney. We finished a ho-hum third on the table. However, there was never anything ho-hum about spending Saturday afternoons with these fine young Trinitarians! 35 NSW All Schools Triathlon 2017 A triathlon is a test of an athlete s cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance and mental strength across three disciplines; swimming, cycling and running, with transitions included in the calculation of a participant s overall performance. On Thursday 23rd February, the 2017 NSW All Schools Triathlon took place at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. The event attracts competitors from all over NSW. Trinity entered two Individual competitors in the Junior Competition, William Cooper (8Hi) and Lewis Potter (7Fo). William performed exceptionally well across the three legs; 400m Swim, 10km Cycle, 3km Run and navigated the always chaotic transition with ease. Out of the 110 competitor field William placed 2nd overall. An outstanding achievement and one that has confirmed his selection in the NSW Triathlon team to compete at the Australian Schools Triathlon Festival in April. Lewis should also be congratulated for his effort finishing 66th overall in the 110 competitor field. The Trinity competitors were not only exemplary athletes, but also impeccable ambassadors for our School through their attitude, behavior and sportsmanship. The boys are thrilled with their efforts and should be very proud of their performance. Hugo Engele Sportsmaster Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 35 of 55

37 CO-CURRICULAR Soloists' Competition Finals The Soloists Competition on Monday 13th March was amazing even considering the virtuosity that we are used to at Trinity. Particularly impressive were the excellent performances by boys from the Junior and Preparatory Schools! This year, the Junior Division was won by Marcus Huang from the Prep with a fine performance of Faber s Fiesta Espana on piano. The Intermediate Division was won by Lucas Fan from the Junior School, who beat a number of much older boys to win the prize, with his fiery rendition of Squire s Tarantella for cello. Mr Pratt announced that this was the last year that the Senior Division would be allowed to grow so huge: from next year the Music Department will establish a new Advanced Division for Grade 8 and Diploma-level performers, reflecting the very high standard of performance at Trinity. Each year over the past few years our stellar flautist Brian Kim has won the Senior Division of the Soloists Competition. This year was no exception, as Brian astonished us with a brilliant performance of Sancan s Sonatine. However, this year Brian shared the prize with virtuosic violinist David Carreon, who gave us a passionate rendition of Sarasate s Zigeunerweisen (Gipsy Airs) for violin. Mrs Carolyn Watson, the Adjudicator, emphasised how difficult it was to choose winners from among all these fine performances. She stressed how important it is to choose the right piece for competition one that you can master and fully express emotionally. With such words of advice, our top Year 12 soloist performers will now focus on their HSC and IB pieces. Meanwhile, those in Year 11 and below can prepare for Trinity s Concerto Competition in Term 4! 42 Society of the Arts Light Fields American installation artist, Megan Mosholder, is one of six artists currently exhibiting at Delmar Gallery as part of the Light Fields exhibition. Megan is visiting Sydney for six weeks courtesy of the Inner West Council s international artist-in-residence programme. Over the past 10 days, she has been creating an elaborate string installation in the gallery, which she describes as drawing in space. Strung like a series of harps, the installation is formed with parabolic curves that arch across the gallery. Each string has been painted with UV reactive pigments, to create a threedimensional mural painting. Under black lights, the effect is ethereal and magical. Also on exhibition are photographs, collage, wall sculpture and moving image works by five recent graduates from the National Art School and Sydney College of the Arts: Sean O Connell explores the energetic qualities of matter and form, discharging high voltage electricity through objects on photographic film; Alice Sciberras plays with scale to present abstract worlds from miniature diaromas; Jade Sibinovski and Ciaran Begley experiment with balance and tension through colour, mass and form; and Michael Petchkovsky repurposes open source gaming software and early electronic technologies for his artistic ends. Exhibition dates: March Gallery open: Wednesday Sunday, 12-5pm (open this Saturday from 11am for Open Day) Free admission Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 42 of 55
