FRIDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2018 Head Master's BulletinPrep NewsJunior School News PDF Version SPORT Basketball CAS Round 2 Trinity vs Cranbrook Trinity go down in overtime thriller. 1st V Trinity could not have asked for a better start in a hot, humid Cranbrook Gym on a Friday night when the boys in Green jumped out to an impressive 18-1 lead in the opening quarter. Alec MacKenzie (12WJ) and Theo Kidd (10WJ) dominated the middle, while youngsters Bailey Chambers (9Ta) and Thomas Buvac (10WJ) benefited off Trinity s slick defence and precision offense to see Trinity finish the period in control up 12 points (27-15). Once again foul trouble plagued Trinity with the Greens handing back the momentum to Cranbrook and
losing their double digit margin at the main break to be only ahead by a couple of buckets (42-38). Ethan Bateman (11WJ) was exceptional at both ends making some big baskets and relentless defense, while Joel Passerini (11Hi) once again provided much needed spark off the bench. Heading into the final period with the scores locked (55-55), Trinity began to feel the mounting pressure in a packed Cranbrook Gym. Defensive errors started to hurt Trinity as Cranbrook s focal point in the middle began to feed off Trinity allowing penetration, and the Greens fell behind by 10 points with only 5 minutes remaining. A couple of huge 3s from Tyrese Proctor (10Fo) had Trinity right back in the contest and up 3 points with only 30 seconds left in the match, before poor decisions again hurt Trinity allowing Cranbrook to take the game into over-time (77-77) with the scores levelled at end of regulation time. A shell-shocked Green outfit were completely outclassed in O.T. (79-93) and will feel that this is a game that they let slip through their fingers in what was an epic contest over in the east. Leading Statistics Tyrese Proctor 18 pts. 9 rebs. Ethan Bateman 15 pts. Alec Mackenzie 14 pts. 10 rebs. Theo Kidd 13 pts. 5 rebs. Bailey Chambers 7 pts. 5 rebs. 6 asts. 2nd V The Greens again hit the road for an expected tough match on a Friday night over at Cranbrook. Trinity started well, with a few quick baskets from Eddy Alcock (12WJ) establishing a small lead. Bailey Plummer (11Du) controlled the defensive rebounds to stave off the Cranbrook attack, while Ethan Su (11He) contributed well on both ends of the floor. The game quickly became a closely contested, basket for basket contest for most of the first half, which ended in a basket lead for Trinity at the half (30-32). Nathan Roberts (12We) opened up after the break with his second triple from deep, but the raucous crowd in the Cranbrook Gym came into play and added to the already high on-court pressure Cranbrook was applying. This combined with a few lapses in play and a few too many offensive rebounds hurt the Greens, as Cranbrook gained momentum and ascendancy to run away with the game (53-68). Leading Scorers Eddy Alcock 13 pts. 7 rebs. Bailey Plummer 10 pts. 9 rebs.
Nathan Roberts 8 pts. 3rd V The 3rds bounced back with solid victory, playing disciplined within its team structures. Richard Ziade (12Mu) continued to pile the points on from all areas in attack, while Nabil Hatoum (12St) defensively made it hard for the opposition to get the ball down the court. Daniel Gergis (11Fo) from the point position caused havoc, to pick up steals, and was able to feed the ball quickly up court and this allowed Trinity to control the game. 4th V It was a close tussle throughout, with the lead changing many times over the course of the game before the Greens pulled away in the closing minutes. Hamzeh Abutaa (11La) was dominant in attack and scored a game high of 15 points. Alex Cameron (12WH) was solid with his rebounds and positional play under the basket at both ends. John Siganos (11St) did a great job on the perimeter, distributing the ball to open teammates and in defence was able to minimise the effectiveness of the Cranbrook transition. Despite good offensive execution allowing Trinity many scoring opportunities, the 4ths must improve their finishing if they are to excel as a team. 5th V This was an extremely physical matchup from the first to last whistle. Early in the game, both teams were trading baskets with either team struggling to pull away. However, after the break, it was a different story with Vincent Buda (12Ho) catching fire and taking over; Vincent finished with 15 points, while also having several rebounds and assists in which was a great Captains performance. Another key contributor was Dhiren Satyendra (12Fo) who put on the finish touches as the 5ths dismantled Cranbrook in the second half on a 20-6 run. 6th V It was a dominant show by Trinity as they easily controlled the tempo right from the start. Adam Kasanczuk (11WH) and David Guo (12Yo) were both a handful to guard and lead the Greens with 20 points combined. Adrian Lagana (11Ar) also was also a major contributor as he pulled down double-digit rebounds. Overall a great showing from the Greens. Year 10A The 10As have started to show signs of the hard work and commitment to team-first basketball that makes a winning side. It started at training this week
where a noticeable shift in the intensity lead to a fast start on Saturday. Recently minted Co-Captains Deonte Williams (Yo) and Jamie Christopoulous (Ar) showed no signs that the extra weight of leadership would slow them down, getting Trinity into a strong and united structure on offence. Hayden Johnson (WH) also looked dangerous from the four-spot dominating his opponent in every rebounding opportunity. The game really took off when Hunter Hannaford (Du) and James Kern (Ke) hit the floor. These two diminutive dynamos epitomised the nuisance role, grabbing offensive rebounds they had no right to, harassing their man on defence and causing turn over after turn over giving Trinity a 6-point lead at the break. From there it was a team effort to maintain a 10-point buffer, weathering each burst from Cranbrook and emerging as 12-point victors in a display that should fill the team with confidence heading into round three. Year 10C The 10Cs proved too fast and accurate for Cranbrook creating many opportunities with relentless defence and attacking the basket with purpose. Joshua Perera (La) and Leo Byfield (Ke) were particularly accurate with their shooting on the break. Brian Tran (Ho) and William Orr (Fo) used their height and power well, and Thomas Seeto (Ta) dribbled past their trap multiple times with ease. Year 10D The 10Ds showed Cranbrook that bread and butter basketball comes in lay-ups. All but two of Trinity s points were from lay-ups, which were simple but effective and, indeed, unstoppable when combined with fitness and strong team cohesion. Jack Gonzi (Yo) lead the team well, keeping everyone focused. Sam Thanopoulos (Hi) and Chris Esposito (Ke) were relentless in their rebounding and finishing at the rim. Year 9A You never know what you are going to get when you come up against Cranbrook, so the 9As went in with a determined attitude to focus on defence and build their offence from their defensive gains. It didn t matter who Trinity called up from the bench, as each and every player was willing and focused as they took to the court. James Andrews (La) led all scorers with 26 points, as he proved unstoppable from all areas on the court. A confident George Robson (He) was deadly from beyond the arc, knocking down a number of big 3s to finish with 15 points and both Jayden Wood (Ar) and Christian Farr (Mu) finished with 11 points apiece as Trinity racked up 83 points in total with all players hitting the scoresheet. Year 9B The silent assassin, Keegan Tran (WH) sparked the team off in the right
direction, firing from the short corners to score the first 6 points for Trinity. Defensively James Kaye (Ho) contributed with a number of steals, Alexander Saba s (WJ) long arms created many deflections and Alisi Leao (Mu) owned the boards to keep Cranbrook s score to single digits in the first half. After the break, Matthew Nicolas (Ke) took over the point position and did a great job directing the 9Bs offense. James Oeser (La) came off the bench with determination and worked hard to drop 12 points for the game and Matt De Belle (Sc) was strong under the bucket to put himself in many offensive positions in a big win for the Greens. Year 9C Trinity outsmarted a physical Cranbrook team with improved communication on the defensive end and a willingness to run and support each other on the fast break. Sam Waddington (Mu) played an outstanding second half, generating a number of key stops and converting them into points at the other end. Evan Alexiou (Ta) showed great perseverance in shooting through a number of misses, eventually hitting the dagger to seal the victory. Year 9D Trinity bounced back from the disappointment of last week s loss with a convincing 13-point victory. The scores were level at halftime, but in the second period, the boys outscored their opponents Returning from injury, Isaac Cunningham (He) provided plenty of spark off the bench, energising teammates with relentless attacking play. Steven Yarad (Mu) also distinguished himself with an imposing presence in the paint. Year 9E From the outset, the 9Es never looked like slowing down against a competitive Cranbrook side. It was evident that Trinity was going to be dominant for the duration of the game as Jason Zong (WH) began his quest for an 18-point game, Jason dominated the paint with ferocious power. Another great facet of this Trinity side was Joseph Lin s (St) speed and aggression around the ring as he constantly caused problems both offensively and defensively for Cranbrook. Year 9F The 9Fs came into a humid Trinity gym on Saturday afternoon against a well drilled Cranbrook outfit and from the outset it looked like this game was going down to the wire. A stand out performance from Jesse Ring (He) in open play kept the Greens in the game. The game eventually came down to the wire with Trinity trailing by a point with six seconds to go. A last second buzzer beater from Thomas Geronikos (Hi) from the edge of the key slowly fell through the basket giving Trinity a gritty win.
Year 9G The 9Gs claimed their first victory (28-18) of the season in a hard-fought contest against Sydney Grammar. Captained this week by Zade El-Eusseini (We), the boys capitalised on offensive rebounds, with Wilson Russell (Ar) and James Mallios (Hi) combining for 16 second-chance points. Nicholas Keogh (Ta) played a fantastic team game, drawing opposing players before passing to teammates for easy scores throughout the second half, whilst Daniel Akpinar (Ho) made a series of crucial free throws and lay-ups to seal the victory. The solid performance must go down to the boys working hard on the core skills at training and implementing them in the game. Year 8B Coming off a huge loss, the 8Bs insisted on starting strong, and strong they were. Trinity were able to get any shot they wanted, however, always ending up at the foul line. Unfortunately, the boys struggled from the charity stripe, which saw Cranbrook pounce on these missed opportunities to take a large lead at the break. Tim Braga (Du) came out inspired, dominating both ends, as Trinity stormed right back into the contest and levelled the scores. Adam Taleb (Mu) and Ryan Geddes (Mu) were also crucial, particularly in attack combing for 16 points, but a couple of tough plays in the final minutes allowed Cranbrook to edge Trinity out by one basket. Year 8E The Greens continued their great start to the season with back-to-back victories. From the first whistle, Paris Karakikes (He) and George Karabastos (Ta) consistently got past defenders, scoring points and getting the opposition in foul trouble. Great free throw shooting by Ari Tashtan (Ke) gave Trinity a convincing lead going into the break. Great passing by Jackson Ghosn (Ke) and rebounding by Davide Eboli (WH) helped secure a great result. Year 8F Trinity pulled out to a comfortable lead at the start of the game through intense defensive pressure by John Mitrothanasis (WH) and Johnathan Reissis (WJ). A couple of steals by Oliver Askew (We) and Malik Amine (Yo) towards the end of the first half allowed the Greens to maintain the advantage. In the second half Cranbrook started to come back with the game becoming quite close with only a few minutes left, however Trinity was able to contain the resurgence and come away with a great win. Year 8G Trinity was looking to bounce back after a tough loss the previous week. Christian Falato (Sc) started the game well, making it tough for his
defenders. William Nice (We) continued the pressure by rebounding well and making good passes. Cranbrook made a late run but the Greens defence was too strong, earning them their first 'W' of the season. Year 8I Against a taller Cranbrook side, Trinity showed determination to play harder and not be intimidated. At half time, it was a one-point lead to the 8Is, but Trinity clicked into gear in the second half outscoring Cranbrook Finn Denney (La) displayed great scoring ability, putting up 10 points. Additionally, Luca Ratnavadivel (We) put up a further 8 points and countless rebounds.
