1 2016 HELLOWORLD AUSTRALIAN U20 & IVOR BURGE CHAMPIONSHIPS DRAWS, RESULTS, TOP PERFORMERS & REPORTS
2 REFLECTIONS ON THE 2007 UNDER-20 WITH PAUL GORISS said he was right to go back in. I resisted because we were not going to lose but he kept insisting saying I want to go back in. In his final year of national Championships, Mills was developing into the NBA Champion and Olympian that he would become and Goriss already knew there was something special about the guard. FEATURE ARTICLE Paul Goriss coached at Under-16, Under-18 and Under-20 level, spent 13 years at the AIS and is the current coach of the University of Canberra Capitals in the WNBL but a shot from a decade ago at the Under-20 national championships in Ballarat still haunts him. It came in double-overtime of the bronze medal game between Goriss ACT and Western Australia, a match which had seen ACT surrender an 11-point margin at quarter-time before fighting back to take it into an extra period. The teams were still deadlocked after one period of overtime and it was deep into double-ot when WA s Kyle Armour held the ball with ACT leading by just a point. The biggest memory I have is Armour s runner to win the game, said Goriss. It was in front of their bench, on the right hand side of the court and it was a tough shot so all credit to Kyle. I was bitterly disappointed for our group because we had come such a long way and I thought we were playing our best basketball but it wasn t to be. I ll never forget that Armour shot marked a change in the format for the Under-20 s with teams split into pools for their group games before the finals but with every team assured of at least advancing beyond the group stage, Goriss knew the Quarter-Final was the all-or-nothing game for every team. Several states were stacked with talent as Queensland were represented by Chris Goulding, Victoria by Kevin Probert, WA by Cameron Gliddon and Daniel Johnson while NSW possessed almost half a dozen AIS scholarship holders and numerous Emu s squad members. However, ACT had their own superstars in Clint Steindl, who was selected after Queensland chose not to pick him, as well as Patty Mills. Queensland gave us a pasting in our first game and they went on to play off for the gold medal, said Goriss. But then New South Wales were stacked and we were able to push them all the way. We knew we just had to be playing our best basketball in the Quarter-Final, and that happened to be against Victoria. I still remember the pre-game talk was that today was when we were going to play our best basketball and I remember leading from start to finish. ACT ran out victors in that game as Mills (36 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, four steals) went close to a triple-double but the win did not come without it s difficulties for Goriss. We were up by about 12 with a couple of minutes to go and someone clocked Patty, cutting open his eyebrow. The other guys stepped up and we didn t lose the lead which was a huge confidence booster for the team. Then, without about a minute to go, Patty tapped me on the shoulder with a huge bandage wrapped around his head and he I was blessed to have Patty. Marty Clarke organised a few players to train with NBL clubs pre-nationals that year and Patty had spent a week with Brian Goorjian at the Kings for a bit of work experience. After that, we played NSW, Victoria and a combined ACT team for warm-up games and Patty just came off the plane and scored 50, 40 and 30. You could start to see his shots were in control and he knew how and when to use his speed as well as lead a team as point guard. You could see long-term that he would be a real player. Following that Quarter-Final victory over Victoria, ACT fell short of Queensland in the Semi-Final as Mills (31 points) duelled with future Olympic team mate Goulding (33 points). That set up a bronze medal clash with WA and Goriss was confident that his team had the talent to bounce back from the loss the day before. At the end of the week of a national championship, everyone is always tired and trying to find that extra bit of energy to play in a big game. But Patty just kept on running the team, kept on scoring. He knew we needed him to score a lot to win and the other guys were good about it, they took their open shots but were happy to play second fiddle to Patty and he was such a great leader for us on and off the court. On paper, ACT were undersized against WA and they would eventually lose the rebound count but they were comfortable playing small ball with Mills running the floor. The game ebbed and flowed with ACT s running game working for periods of time before WA s domination under the rim took over. Daniel Johnson (29 points, 19 rebounds) had owned the paint for WA but a spanner was thrown into the works when he fouled out after 39 minutes of playing time. The match was headed into overtime but at that stage, Goriss was pleased. I think we were shocking people with our style of play and I was happy for the game to keep going as they had to play small ball without DJ. It was a better situation for us the longer the game went. Trent Worthington took over for Johnson in the paint, finishing with 25 points and 13 rebounds but Ashley Palmer (16 points), Steindl (12 points) and Ben White (12 points) ensured the margin remained close. Mills was certainly the go-to player though and he finished with 49 points on shooting with seven assists. However, with time running out and the match about to hit 50 minutes, Armour (11 points, 11 rebounds, five assists) drilled the dagger for a victory, breaking the hearts of the ACT players and Goriss. I ll never forget that Armour shot. And I don t think Patty will either.

6 Game Reports VU20 Men- Queensland 80 def. by Tasmania 93 The lead changed hands seven times by the start of the third quarter in this contest but Tasmania used a strong third term to open up a double-digit advantage. A three-pointer from Tobias Cameron brought the margin back to seven points midway through the fourth but Brady Armstrong s 31 points proved too much for Queensland to reel in. IB Women- NSW Metro 83 def. SA 27 NSW Metro s pressure defence was on from the opening tip and they forced SA into a bevy of turnovers. By the end of the game, NSW M had doubled their oppositions field goal attempts, finishing with 108 shots as three players recorded double-doubles including Nicole Harris (34 points, 28 boards). For SA, Katie Williams impressed with 12 points. U20 Men- SA 106 def. NSW 73 Jumping out of the blocks with a 38-8 first period, SA never let NSW back into the contest as starters Isaac White and Jacob Rigoni combined for 60 points. They shot 50% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc while only Angus Glover (22 points) was able to get free at the offensive end for NSW. IB Men- Victoria 96 def. SA 91 A see-sawing affair, Victoria led by 15 points at half-time but SA pulled themselves back into the contest with a third term before grabbing a lead late in the final few minutes. The home side were solid from the free-throw line though down the stretch and that ensured they would secure the win as Jake De La Motte recorded an astounding 50-point game to answer Wayne Kinross 43. U20 Women- WA 71 def. Queensland 64 A great start by both teams saw them match basket for basket and ensure the game was tied at the first break. WA s defence picked up from there though and as Queensland struggled to find the ring and break through the pressure, WA opened up a slim lead which was enough to carry them through to the final siren. IB Men- NSW 63 def. by Japan 82 Japan flew out of the gate with a first period and NSW were playing catch-up for the rest of the contest. They did win the second quarter thanks to Jack Littleton s 25 points but the international side were not to be denied as Hiroki Kato led all scorers with 39 points. GAME REPORTS U20 Women- ACT 71 def. by SA 78 Four starters finished in double-figure scoring for ACT as they matched their opposition at the offensive end, hitting six three-pointers for the game. Chelsea Brook proved a concern under the rim though, recording 16 points and ten rebounds to help SA out-score ACT in the paint.
7 Game Reports IB Women- NSW Country 48 def. by ACT 83 It was a tight first half as ACT threatened to pull away a few times before NSW C were able to draw them back in, only trailing by nine points at half-time. ACT finally broke the game open in the third quarter though, winning the period as Brittany and Taylor Anderson combined for 51 points. U20 Men- WA 82 def. by Victoria 88 WA had the momentum for much of the first half in this game but Victoria were slowly pulling themselves back into the contest by the start of the third period. A three from Cooper Hamilton threatened to derail the home team s run but the likes of Mate Colina (19 points) and Tristan Lloyd (15 points) secured the comeback win as nine Vic players hit the scoreboard. IB Men- Tasmania 113 def. by WA 41 An exceptional defensive performance from Tasmania helped them to a big win on Day 2, holding WA to just 20% field goal shooting. Five Tassie players reached double-figures in scoring, paced by Joshua Cleary s 26 points and 26 rebounds as they shot 51% from inside the arc. U20 Men- ACT 81 def. Queensland 80 In their second game of the day, Queensland were desperate to atone for their loss to Tasmania and they owned a double-digit lead heading into the final quarter. ACT did not panic though and some clean shooting ensured the game was heading towards a close finish. Cameron gave Queensland a two-point lead inside the final minute but Broderick Doran proved the hero, drilling the game-winning three-pointer on the ensuing possession to give ACT a memorable victory. U20 Women- NSW 51 def. by Victoria 61 Victoria took an early lead in this one and threatened to blow the game open but NSW s defence was just as impressive, restricting the home side from getting on too big of a run. They went basket for basket up until the last quarter when the Vics finally were able to extend their lead to a comfortable range. Chantel Horvat tallied 16 points and 16 boards for the victors.
