Term 2, Week ISA Round 8 v Redfield College 22 nd July At CCGS

Page 2 Last, our Senior teams travelled to Bowral to play Oxley College away for the first time in five years. As customary, it is always tougher playing away from home and the 13s found this out with a very slow start in their match. Oxley immediately gained the upper hand and were never headed. The 14s were forced to play on the smaller field which lead to a tight physical match with neither side giving an inch. With only minutes to play, CCGS scored a late try to run out deserved winners. The 16s have improved dramatically this year with a wonderful positive attitude. The rewards of fine teamwork and passion for the process has been evident and they were rewarded with a fine win away from home last. The 1st XV have been decimated with injury and after a convincing win over their opponent in round 2, on this occasion Oxley College took the spoils Special congratulation to Stuart Brown (12) who yesterday represented ISA 1st XV in the first round of NSWSRU trials at Pittwater Rugby Park. Unfortunately, the team lost the match to CHS I (36) (39) but Stuart was fantastic in scoring two tries in the match. Stuart is the first CCGS representative in ISA I since Trent Dyer in We are very proud of you Stuart. Good luck next Friday at Knox Grammar School in the final round of trials. I hope you all enjoy a happy and safe term 2 break and I look forward to the final round of matches and finals when we return in term 3. Link to ISA Rugby page for the results table:

Page 3 CCGS 1 st XV CCGS 1 st XV 12 defeated by Oxley College 32 Away games have always been hard to win and this game was no exception. The opposition were spirited and committed to their home ground. Our boys played well and despite some adversity in the first half and lack of possession were only down at half time. However, further injury to our ever growing toll was to eventually punish us and we were unable to stop the drive and passion of the opposition. To the credit of our boys they didn t let CCGS down, even when they knew the game was beyond them. It was a courageous effort and they should be proud of how well they played. Each player knows whether he put in a full effort or not and that is really all that coaches can ask. We have 3 games left and we have a number of boys returning from injury so let s now focus on striving to achieve our best out of these games. Remember to do your own personal training over the break to ensure that you are ready. Bil Kensey Coach

Page 4 CCGS 14s Central Coast Grammar School 19 defeated Oxley College 12 Last the 14s were the only team that played on the small field at Oxley College. This added extra pressure to playing away from home as it limited our attacking strength out wide, which has yielded so many points this year. As we expected, this match turned into a physical battle where field position was crucial. CCGS started out well and applied great pressure on Oxley. Unfortunately, Hamish sustained a serious injury and had to leave the field. Ellis filled in admirably on the wing making several crucial tackles. Noah scored the first try in the 10th minute which was converted by Seb. The narrow lead was taken in at the break. Oxley came out firing early in the second half scoring tries in the 34th and 39th minute. The second try was converted and Oxley lead 12-7 mid way through the second half. Our boys never gave up and actually raised their level of physicality at the breakdown. Louis leading the way with same damaging clean outs. The boys were starting to create space and delivering quick ball to stand in half back Hudson. In the 42nd minute Jack found himself in space out wide to touch down to level the score. Play continued to move send to end with missed opportunities by both teams. CCGS had one last chance as they attacked the line. Noah raced in to join a forward drive, took the ball from thee back and physically forced his way past several defenders to score. Seb kicked the conversion and the boys scored a welldeserved win.

Page 5 CCGS 13s CCGS 13s 12 defeated by Oxley College 42 Not one of our best performances of the season. After a brief warm up, the boys took the field without their trademark intensity and usual fast start. We fell off a number of tackles early and failed to initiate a low tackle focus through the majority of the match. Oxley came out firing and strung together 3 quick tries to really have the side on the back foot. From there, the boys lifted and started to make a contest of it. Tackling and ruck defence improved and we managed to put the Oxley side under some pressure. Some good phases of play resulted in a try to Alex Pulbrook scoring in the 21st minute. We went into half time 15-5 down. In the second half, Oxley blew us off the park. Slow line speed in defence and a lack of aggression allowed the opposition to play the game at their tempo. The boys had few answers to Oxley in attack right up until thedying minutes. Late in the match Jules had some aggressive and powerful runs these put the opposition on the back foot. From his third big charge, Tom took the ball, crossing for a try in the 48th minute. The final two minutes saw CCGS taking charge, but our run came a little too late. Special mention to Hamish for his man of the match performance outstanding low tackle focus proved effective throughout. We have a break in matches until Term 3, where we play Redfield on the 22nd July at CCGS. Pulbrook, Burke tries, Pulbrook conversion Blake Berczelly (Coach)

Page 7 Prep Rugby Convenor Over the weekend I got to see several games of rugby and one on TV and the most entertaining game was watching our very own Prep First XV. What an excellent victory! Mosman Prep were a very well drilled team and were very good at the break down, however they were no match in the end. The game was such a great spectacle as all contributed and included excellent forward and backline play while sticking to a game plan. Well done on a great team effort! While the Under 11s lost they also played an excellent game. A quick 17 points in the first 5 minutes to Redfield set a challenge for the remainder of the game. While CCGS won the remained of the match from that point they went down 12 points. Great effort all the same plenty of promising play. The Under 9s travelled to Sydney to play Barker and put in another stronger performance winning comfortably. Prep Rugby results from the weekend are as follows: Round 7 CCGS Prep First XV defeated Mosman Prep 19 7 CCGS Under 11s defeated by Redfield CCGS Under 9s defeated Barker Down in the Infants area of the school 15 or so students have been doing rugby skills training on Wednesday afternoons well done to those participating. Your energy and positive attitude has been fantastic. Mr Dunstan has been very impressed! Mr Luke McLoughlin During the holiday break Camp Waratah will be held here at CCGS on Thursday 6th July. Just follow the link below and follow the prompts

Page 8 CCGS Prep 1 st XV CCGS Prep Firsts 19 defeated Mosman Prep 7 In, arguably, their best all round performance of the season, the Prep Firsts beat the previously undefeated Mosman Prep by a margin of three tries to one. Unlike the previous game, where they conceded an early lead, this time the whole team showed fantastic resolve to come from behind then go on with it. The game began in strong, physical fashion with the two packs ripping in. Aiden Deacon, Michael Reiss, Bowen Pursehouse and Lochie McClelland all made charging runs at the defence while Zac Nicholson, Shamus Betts laid the platform with strong rucking work. In defence, Noah Owens and Zac Pearce were real terriers, constantly harrowing the Mosman inside backs with jarring hits while the CCGS back line of Lucca Mare, James Power, Angus Muma, Ben Wilson, Jonty Gleeson and Jack Todd provided an impenetrable wall. The play flowed to and fro between the two quarter lines until, unexpectedly, a Mosman player broke several tackles to crash over and take the lead for his side. However, The Firsts were quick to respond when Deacon took the ball between the half way and quarter line and proceeded to trample and swat away a succession of defenders on his way to the try line. With Toby Burns s impressive conversion from a wide angle, the game was back on level terms at half time. In the second stanza, the team combined steel in defence with skill in attack. Harrison McGarry and Lucca Mare took real advantage of the pack s strong work by providing slick service to the outside men. After excellent clean out in the forwards, the ball was sent wide to a flying Burns who sprinted over and put CCGS in front. The conversion was missed but it didn t matter as, a few minutes later, the team scored their third try. It started when Will Funnell went on a charge, scattering defenders like nine pins on his way to the quarter line. From there, quick ball was spread to Burns, who managed to catch the ball on his fingertips before miraculously sending it to his winger while in mid-air! Burns nailed the conversion for a meritorious 19-7 win. Well done boys. It was a fine victory played, in excellent style with the forwards and backs all doing their job. It was also a performance where you showed that you had learned from your mistakes. Steve Dunstan (Coach)

Page 9 CCGS 11s CCGS 11s 17 defeated by Redfield 29 The CCGS 11s played very well on against Redfield who again presented themselves as strong opposition for us. They were quick to get into their rhythm and scored two early tries to take a handy lead. We were able to go evenly with Redfield for the remainder of the first half with some more commitment in rucks and more unselfish play at the breakdown. Our try scoring backline was kept quiet by one particularly good Redfield defender, however we didn't stop trying and would soon show we could beat him on his inside when he raced up quickly. Oscar Fort did a great job filling in at no 10 this week with quick and consistent service to Jack McHugh and Hunter Winn. Maison Patrick was outstanding in defence again this week, cutting off their backline movements, causing dropped balls and many wayward Redfield passes. Our amazing Year 4 players Brady Burns and Alex Hunter again proved their importance to our team doing some great things on the edges and pushing themselves into the middle to support their team mates. Before half time we scored a brilliant try when Mikey Tripolone broke away cleanly down the left edge and stepped, fended off and ran away from everyone to score a long range individual try. Mikey, who was the best player on the field from both teams on, scored another even more brilliant try like this in the second half after some highly committed defence from Flynn Jones who also played very well this week. Casper Mudge was scheming again with some more very smart play around the rucks, busting through tackles and intelligently holding the ball long enough to create maximum space for his runners. Isaac Wasiliev and Harrison Britten were excellent in defence again and getting better each week. Tom Potts worked hard and his willing effort forced Redfield back on a number of occasions. Lucas Ma was able to make some good charges into the defensive line and get his team on the front foot. Jack McHugh stepped brilliantly to beat a tiring Redfield defence late in the game to score a well deserved try that showed patience as well as skill, strength and speed. The CCGS 11s are a fantastic team who train well and are enjoying success every week. A great team to be part of! Thank you to the wonderfully positive, supportive and applauding parents we have in this team, it is another great year of Rugby for this team. Well done boys! Brian Rees (Coach)

Page 10 CCGS 9s CCGS Under 9s defeated Barker Three key components of rugby were the main focus of practice leading into the game against Barker. Our boys have been learning the technique and importance of the tackle, clean out and communication. From the kick off CCGS played with energy and determination and created an exciting game of rugby. Our forwards concentrated on the clean out and supporting the ball carrier. Kato, Lewis and Maddox demonstrated this commitment in the breakdown and also enjoyed quality runs with the ball. Jack Gray and Jack Phyland constantly tied up opposition ball, preventing the Barker attack. Ethan and Auden also added value in the tight forward play with strong clean outs and commitment to the breakdown. Mac and Christian continue their positive power plays with strong forward running and ruthless wrestles in contact. Daring raids from the backline of Jonah, Isaac, Max and Sam Matthews created numerous attacking opportunities for the team. Wingers Asher and Lukas had opportunities to run the ball and hustled in defence. Defensive efforts from Isaac, Jonah and Max were appreciated by team mates with pats on the back and high fives for their tackling commitment. Sam Jones enjoyed the opportunities he created through strong clean outs, intense defence and hard ball running. Sam's constant enthusiasm in practice and in the game saw him with the ball in hand driving forward and being reward with his first ever try! Congratulations to the team on working together in defence, committing to the clean out and supporting the ball carrier. James Cummins (Coach)
