LYTTELTON HOUSE Bromsgrove School Worcester Road Bromsgrove Worcestershire B61 7DU Tel: +44 (0) Fax: +44 (0) Dear Parents, On the eve of beginning a new term the Easter term now seems like a long time ago. Hopefully the long break has been well used revising, relaxing or travelling. I know there have been a number of the boys on the various trips including D of E in the Lake District, a Spanish trip, the German exchange and the cricket tour in Antigua. There were a number of successes during the Easter term well worth a mention. Alex Nisbet was invited to attend the Scottish U18 rugby squad trials. He was successful in being selected for the Scottish squad, but unfortunately damaged a cruciate ligament during the trial preventing him from playing for the rest of the season. Well done to Harry Murphy (11 th /32) for being Junior House Squash captain and organising the team to play over a number of lunch times each week. Also well done for playing to Tom Eaves (8 th /32), James Lord (17 th /32), Richard Vaughan (23 rd /32) and Tom Martin (29 th /32). They finished in 3 rd position overall. Will Lockhart is over the moon to receive an offer from Oxford University (Fitzwilliam College) to study Land Economy after taking a gap year, and is now hard at work to ensure he achieves the required grades. Joe Symonds has been making valuable contributions to meetings after being selected to represent Lyttelton at the Senior Pupil School Forums. Matthew Hegarty took part in the English Speaking Union Public Speaking Competition, the team were runners-up and Matt was awarded with the Best Chair prize. Jacques Banton was selected to take part in Midland cricket trials and successfully gained a place in the squad. Lawrence Weston was selected to participate in the European Youth Parliament Assembly in Birmingham. Max Butterfield achieved a Gold Award in the National Senior Maths Challenge and has made it through to the next round of papers. Jack Hill took part in a week long survey of the School s food provision, monitoring the food and then feeding back to the catering manager at a meeting over lunch. Matthew Hegarty was selected for the final selection weekend to be offered a place on a CCF exchange trip to Canada, where he would spend 6 weeks trekking around the Canadian wilderness. He has now been selected and will spend 7 weeks of the summer holidays trekking around the Canadian wilderness, what an opportunity! Will Lockhart and William Draper-Barr have performed admirably in the Senior House debating competition being narrowly beaten by a possibly less logical, but more emotional performance. Daniel Ashton captained the winning U14 rugby 7 s team at a local School s tournament and collected the trophy for the team in Routh assembly. During the Easter holiday Lawrence Weston was selected to play rugby for England U17 against Italy U18. They unfortunately lost 17-5, but it is another addition to Lawrence s emerging rugby career. He continues to attend England training camps next term. The Student of the Week Award has been received by the following: Alex Nisbet (invite to U18 Scotland trials), Matthew Hegarty (Best Chair of Debating Prize), Matthew Coulson (consistent improvement in effort grades, straight A s in mocks), Sam Delaney-Hall (most commendations this week, overall improving effort), Max Butterfield (Gold Certificate in UKMT Maths Challenge,
all round effort and Ly commitment), Henry Marshall (Leading 1.2 Relays and winning the first leg). The Study of the Week Award has been given to the following in chronological order; 5 th, L4th, L6th, 5 th, L4th, 5 th. The Junior House Badminton Team - Roly Bhalla, Guy Slater, Tom Eaves, Cameron Ritchie - came a respectable 3 rd. The Senior House Badminton Team - Matthew Coulson, Josh Firminger, Joe Lamb and Joe Hadlington.
The Senior House Cross Country Team consisting of Billy Draper- Barr, Jacob Harvey, Freddie Meredith, Matthew Coulson and Richard Aston. The Junior House Cross Country Team consisting of Henry Marshall, George Marshall, Tom Eaves, Tom Martin, Ben Fraser, Ash Kandola and Liam Hunt.
The runners-up in the annual 1.2 Relays. Henry Marshall, George Marshall, Tom Ford, Billy Draper-Barr, Jack Weston and Harry Nichols. The effort and attainment grades for Lyttelton have remained on a reasonable 2.1 overall average effort grade, but there have been some commendable individual improvements. For particularly good or improving grades Headmaster Commendations were awarded to Jack Weston and George Marshall at half term and to Wil Lockhart and Will Ayliffe at the end of term. One highlight of the term was the Burns Night Ball in January. The PA did a fantastic job organising everything and fun was had by all.
The most prominent thing going on in Lyttelton over the last few months is the refurbishment program. It has been a busy and disruptive period, moving House twice in a term, but the boys took it in their stride and coped without any issues. We are all quite speechless on our return, seeing how much had changed. Some pictures below show the work being carried out, but I invite you to come and see the House properly between 18:15 and 19:00 next Tuesday 19 th April where there will be guided tours and refreshments available. With exams approaching, a new House to personalise and develop, numerous PA events and a busy School life carrying on as usual I am sure the Summer Term will have just as much to report from. Kind regards, Matt Giles
