1 BROADWAY ewsletter ACADEMY Ron Skelton M.Ed. B Phil. B.Ed (Hons). NPQH. LLE. FRSA Headteacher of Broadway Academy, The Broadway, Birmingham B20 3DP Issue 68 24/03/2016 Our Children, Our Community, Believe it can be done! Headteacher s Thought for the week Year 9 boys football I wish all our readers a peaceful and restful Easter break. Staff and students at Broadway are all working very hard to ensure the exam results are excellent this year - carefully targeted students are in revision classes every day during the Easter holidays! The extracurricular programme continues to be exceptional. Last weekend I visited 39 Broadway students on their Duke of Edinburgh expedition to Cannock Chase. Broadway students are great ambassadors, delightful and a credit to you as parents; it is wonderful to see our students involved in wholesome activity in the outdoors. I would like to see every single student at Broadway Academy involving themselves in some way with the D of E. At Broadway, we continue to ensure the safety of our students comes first; please monitor your children s use of the internet and social media. I believe as a parent and as a Headteacher this is a huge challenge for all of us as we try to ensure that our children grow up to be healthy, emotionally stable and well-adjusted young men and women. Never before have the challenges around inappropriate websites and the use of social media been such an issue we need to work together to tackle this epidemic! Finally, after a very busy term I would like to continue to thank you for your support; it was heartening that Ofsted in February told me that Parents, members of the local community, pupils, staff and governors fully believe in your motto Our children, Our community, Believe it can be done! Thank you Mr Skelton Broadway vs Nishkam (21st March) Monday saw us host Nishkam High in what we have renamed the fortress due to our recent unbeaten run. A few changes to team selection meant most of our players had a chance to play. The game started quite fairly with both teams creating a few chances but with ourselves guilty of missing the better of the chances. Goals were soon to flow though with us taking the lead and within 10 minutes tripling our advantage to make it 3 0 at half time. A few tactical changes at half time meant we came out stronger and this proved to be a genius piece of management as we dominated the game, Nishkam set out their stall in order to stop us playing. We were guilty of playing too much like Arsenal and trying to walk the ball into the goal. As the second half moved on it was hardly end to end stuff and we camped in the Nishkam half adding 7 more goals in the second half to make the full time score The lads deserve so much praise after losing their first 5 games of the season to bounce back and go on a 5 game winning streak. Sport Relief Mile This half term the PE department took part in their very own version of the Sport Relief Mile. The lack of space to take part in the event didn t stop the PE department or the students getting involved! We decided to mark out a route on the school site for the students to walk, hop, skip, jump, piggy back, conga or 3 legged walk round! Students donated spare change in lessons and some students paid 1 to wear their own sports kit for their PE lesson. Many thanks for getting involved and making a difference to the lives of other people.

2 Girls inter-house dodge ball competition Values focus of the week Year 7 girls inter-house dodge ball competition held on Monday 21st March Winners - Boulton B Runners Up - Austin A Year 9 girls inter-house dodge ball competition held on Wednesday 23rd March Winners - Boulton B Runners Up - Chamberlain A Well done to all the girls - they all worked hard and had fun! This Girl Can ASPIRATION FOR ALL Do you believe you can achieve? We need to learn how to dream. Keep the dream alive, reach your goals. Some people don t decide to have a vision of what they want out of life. NO GOALS! People with aspirations / goals can see what they eventually want to achieve and they can see just how to get there. THIS WEEK'S GOLDEN WORDS Let no one steal your dreams. Let no one tear apart the burning of ambition That fires the drive inside your heart. Let no one steal your dreams Let no one tell you that you can t Let no one hold you back Let no one tell you that you won t. Set your sights and keep them fired Set your sights on high. Let no one steal your dreams Your only limit is the sky. Let no one steal your dreams Follow your heart Follow your soul For only when you follow them Will you feel truly whole. On Thursday 22nd March, all the girls at the Academy had the opportunity to take part in a This Girl Can campaign that promotes the benefits of physical activity and that it can also be fun to exercise. Over the course of the day different year groups came down to PE and swapped their shoes for roller skates and then took part in their very own roller disco! Lots of the girls had never roller skated before but they didn t let that stop them and despite falling over the girls got straight back onto their wheels and carried on! The day finished off with 90 students staying after school for the after school roller disco! Many thanks to those teachers that supported the event and a big thank you to Mr Skelton for allowing the day to happen!

3 School Uniform The Broadway Academy uniform shows that pupils are part of an organisation. Wearing it says we're all in this together" and are part of Team Broadway. Also, if you wear your uniform with pride, it means you are half way there to being respectful; buying into what the organisation is all about. Uniforms also give students a sense of belonging and create an identity for the school in the community. On that note, please note that Hooded Jumpers, Caps or Trainers are not part of the Broadway uniform policy. Examples of Hooded Jumpers/Jackets NOT permitted: Examples of outdoor coats permitted: Examples of footwear NOT permitted: Examples of footwear permitted: Many thanks for your continued support. Mr D Chauhan Deputy Headteacher
