Things are particularly hectic for Mr Akhurst and class 4 at the moment, visits to; QE, Kingfisher Award, Tag Rugby, Cricket and a Rugby presentation to name but a few activities! A special thanks to those parents for being so understanding during this busy period (next year s class 4 parents take heed!) Thankfully, things are calming down for us all for the last fortnight of term. Although, next Friday is definitely going to be a day to remember Circus Bazercus is heading our way. The whole school (including preschool) will be participating in a day of Circus activities. It would be great if children could get dressed up; either as clowns or just bright and colourful? Perhaps trainers or plimsolls would be a good idea for some of the activities. At 3pm parents will be invited in to have a look at some of the children sharing their experiences. I also have some exciting staffing news to pass on to you. As from September Michelle Gidley (previously covering in class 1) will be the joint preschool manager. This is because, Helen Grigg will be studying full time for her Early Years Degree. I am sure you would like to join me in wishing Helen every success with her future teaching career; Helen you will be missed! Thank you to everyone who supported the pre-school by buying raffle tickets. They raised an amazing 590 plus they were given a very generous donation of 200 by PR Cars. Finally, it is with great pride that we give out the children s reports today. I can only add my congratulations to each and every child on the tremendous attitude that they have had to their learning again this year. 2 LETTER FROM JOHN JOLIFFE (our Executive Headteacher from January 2016) I am delighted to have been appointed to the role of Executive Headteacher of the Exe Valley Federation and have thoroughly enjoyed the time that I have already spent in the three schools. It has been a real pleasure to meet the children, staff and governors of the Exe Valley and I am looking forward to spending more time with them in the New Year. I can remember wanting to become a teacher when I was just seven years old and it is still a privilege to work with children after twenty years in the profession. I have worked in schools in and around Bristol during that time and have been Headteacher of two schools, first in Long Ashton, which is a village outside Bristol and then more recently in Westbury Park School, which is just off the Downs in the city. The educational landscape has changed a great deal in that time but so also has our understanding of how children learn and more importantly, how their emotions and learning styles affect their whole lives, not just their learning in the classroom. My wife is also a teacher and works in two local schools. Our three children have been brought up in Bristol and the two eldest have now left home to study and to work. Our youngest child will be going to Exeter College when we move down to Exeter next year. We have seen life from both sides of the school desk and hopefully this understanding has helped us to understand what it is like to be a parent and teacher in primary schools today. We are looking forward to moving to Devon and to getting to know a new part of the country with a lot less traffic than Bristol! I am looking forward to getting involved in the local communities around the three schools and to getting to know everyone there. I hope that the experiences that I have gathered over the time I have been a Headteacher will be helpful to the Exe Valley Federation and working with the senior staff to create one vision, expressed in three different ways. 3 The Kingfisher Award On 8 th July we represented Newton St. Cyres Primary School by doing FWAG. FWAG stands for Farming, Wildlife Advisory Group. Down at the Rec, we showed all our hard work such as diagrams, graphs, Scratch games and more. We spent a lot of time creating these masterpieces, with interesting facts and eye-popping drawings. Our personal favourite was making the bees. When we got down there Mr. A had already set up most of the work. As he had set up most it, we got to go to the park for a little while. Before we knew it, we had to come back and show our work to the judges. When the judges came round they asked us lots of questions like how big is a bee s brain and how many bees in a swarm. Finally it was time to see who won. It was Red Hills Primary. Unfortunately we didn t get a place but we all did amazingly well. Page 3

4 Bugsy Malone Written by Bugsy Malone (Will Anstey) and Blousey Brown (Lois Harris) On 2 nd July four schools performed a short play of their choice in the Crediton Square for the Crediton Arts Festival. We started with a slight hiccup as our microphone wasn t working but we moved on and performed a few sections from Bugsy Malone including the famous songs: Fat Sam s Grand Slam, Bad Guys and My Name Is Tallulah. We all enjoyed performing Bugsy Malone and finished the play with one of the loudest claps we have ever heard. I (Will) have even had people coming up to me in the middle of Tescos telling me how well I did alongside everyone else. We then watched three other performances from the Cheriton, Thorverton and Haywards. Cheriton did some sections from The Jungle Book, Thorverton did songs about Earth and water and Haywards did a very funny sketch about life progression. Page 4

5 Rugby World Cup Tour; Tag Rugby Tournament On Wednesday night, the Newton St. Cyres tag rugby team went to Crediton Rugby Club to take part in a very special tag rugby tournament. The rugby World Cup was on display at the club, one of only 3 rugby clubs in the South West. With a few changes to the team, there was lots to be excited about on the side of the pitch. In our pool there was Red Hills, Tedburn Kings and Morchard Bishop A. Mr. Grigg helped us on the side-lines and we started really well. We beat Tedburn 9-5 and then beat Morchard Bishop 7-5. In the last game in our pool we beat Red Hills, confirming out progression to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals we met Cheriton Fitzpaine who we had faced a number of times this year. In an extremely close game we were narrowly beaten 8-7 by a well drilled team who ran great support lines. We played really well throughout the tournament and we are proud of our achievements. Cheriton went on to win the whole tournament and with Thorverton winning some games, it was another great display for the Exe Valley Federation. After the game, lots of us went and had pictures with the World Cup Trophy. It was a great evening. Page 5

6 Sports Day On the 6 th July we had our sport s day. We had to come in our PE kit because we were going on to the field for our morning activities. After we had assembly we went outside. The morning activities consisted of javelin, standing jump, hoop throw and ball throw. In javelin you had to throw a javelin as far as you could. We had a practice throw before the real one. We all did really well. Next we did the standing jump. In the standing jump we had to stand in a line and take it in turns to jump. The furthest jump was the winner. One of our favourite activities was the hoop throw. You had three bean bags and we had to aim into the hoops. The further back it was, the more points it was worth. In the bean bag throw we had to try and throw the bean bag as far as possible. The place we came in all of the events in the morning was crucial as it won points for our house team. In the afternoon there were more activities and all the parents came to watch. There was running, short and long distances, an obstacle race, egg and spoon races and the sack race for class 1. The best race was the year 6 extreme relay. The year 6 s had to jump obstacles with buckets of water which had holes in the bottom. After that everyone got to soak the teachers from top to bottom. Everyone really enjoyed sports day and we can t wait for it again next year. Page 6
