1 Brooke V.C. C. of E. Primary School Spring Term; Issue 21 February 24th 2017 The Last Brooke Report of February Tiger Tiger Burning Bright 4:45 on a Saturday morning is usually far too early to wake up. But last Saturday was no exception; the coach was going to leave school at 6:15 and we couldn t be late well I couldn t, I had all the tickets! I was amazed that as I arrived at 6:00 the coach was already there and there was a queue for the bus. I checked everybody in, made sure I had collected the tickets and then, right on time we left for a full day of Rugby with Leicester Tigers Rugby Club. After a largely uneventful but increasingly foggy journey we arrived at the training ground, ready to make a prompt start with the coaching session. It was very muddy, but with all the practice we had done previously we managed to stay largely upright for the full hour plus and had a great time playing a lot of skills-based games. Following this session we moved into the clubhouse for a question and answer session with one of the First- Team players. Fraser Balmain is one of the Prop Forwards who is usually right at the front of the scrum, but unfortunately he is currently sidelined with a bulging disc in his neck. He answered lots of good questions from the floor and finished by signing everyone s tee-shirts. We had a quick change out of our muddy kit and then headed off to the stadium. Leicester has been very much in the news recently, both for winning the Premier League title last year and finding the bones of King Richard III buried under a car park. As we drove through it seemed to me to be a very vibrant city with lots going on. We parked the coach at Leicester City s King Power Stadium, a very impressive new ground, and walked the mile or so to Leicester Tigers Welford Road ground.

3 Maintaining Uniformity F ollowing the closure of the Schoolwear Centre we are pleased to announce that we will be using Stevensons as our new uniform supplier. They are a long-established company with over 90 years experience of supplying clothing and have taken over the shop on Ber Street to help maintain some continuity for local schools. They will be able to deal with orders from the shop and via a link that will appear on our website. We will not be changing our logo so the current uniform will remain. When I spoke with their School Coordinator we looked at the range of uniform options and materials available. While we will be keeping the majority of the items we will change the PE shirts from a navy cotton, to a more specific PE-type top which will be much more appropriate for exercise. Here they are modelled by Evie-Joan and Georgia. Also in addition to the regular grey skirts and pinafores, and blue, checked gingham dresses that girls can wear, there is an extra range of tartan skirts and pinafores you may like to choose.
4 Someone Set Your Tail Alight After a not-so-brief visit to the club shop we moved into the Junior Tigers Club where the children signed up to be Junior Tigers and all received a goodybag containing, amongst other things, the biggest chocolate coin I had ever seen. There was also the opportunity to pick up some extra food, Sam found the longest hot-dog he d ever eaten. We did almost lose Esie when the Tigers mascot, Welford, thought she looked like a tasty morsel for his lunch! All our match tickets for the game between Tigers and Bristol were in a block so we could all sit together in the Robin Hood Stand. We were in our seats early enough to watch much of the teams warm up routines which were very intense and hard work. Once the match started I was amazed how well the children supported Leicester and how quickly they picked up the flow and rules of the game. They were all wonderfully silent during all the place-kicks and cheered and chanted at the tops of their voices during the rest of the play. Leicester Tigers Prop Forward Fraser Balmain Bristol scored first with a penalty kick but once Leicester got into their stride they were unstoppable. Pat Cilliers, Owen Williams and Telusa Veainu all scored a try each and JP Pieterson scored two to give Tigers a lead at half time. During the break we were taken onto the pitch for a group photo under the posts before the second half began. Leicester continued their dominance for the second period and completed a victory. It was a great match and a wonderful atmosphere which everyone enjoyed (except the Bristol fans I guess!). Strangely the coach was very quiet on the way home, there were a lot of very sleepy heads who had had a great day out.
