1 Coombeshead Newsletter website: Issue 63: 30 th June 2017 Welcome to this week s edition of the Coombeshead Academy newsletter Since I last communicated with you, a lot has happened on a national scale that affects schools. The general election took place and regardless of political loyalties one thing I took from the whole process leading up to the general election, was how powerful an effect a notion of hope over fear can have. Hope structures your life in anticipation of the future and influences how you feel in the present. Similar to optimism, hope creates a positive expectation about a goal or future situation. Such mental time travel alters your state of mind and your behaviour in the present. The positive feelings you experience looking ahead, as you imagine hopefully what might happen, what you will achieve or who you are going to be, can alter how you feel about yourself. Along with hope comes the prediction that you will be happy, this can also have behavioural consequences. At the same time, having the strength to realise when hope should be relinquished and the courage to acknowledge a degree of helplessness in a situation, can point all of us in a very inspiring direction that is then accompanied by new hope. Within school, this is a lesson that I would hope all pupils carry with them, whatever their age or destination. If at all stages of our life through school, both within school and out in the community we serve, we collectively have a positive view of the direction we are heading and support each other with the sincere hope of achieving the very best for all those in our care, I have no doubt we will achieve exceptional outcomes that benefit the whole child. 2 STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2017 From epraise: We announced the winners and runners-up to #SOTY2017 last week but I thought that you would like to know that Evie Morgan was very close to scooping a prize! We decided that Evie and the other students that made the shortlist deserve some recognition so we ll be adding them to our website awards page (which will launch next week) and we ve also attached a badge that you can pin to Evie's profile on epraise too. I d just like to say a massive thank you to you and your school for taking the time to nominate students for our #SOTY2017 competition, without your help we wouldn t be celebrating it s 4 th anniversary. PRAISE
3 YEAR 5 SPORTING SPECTACULAR On Friday 16 th June, 490 Year 5 students from around the local area attended the Year 5 Sporting Spectacular a day of athletics and game-based activities for all students. The activities for the day were run by our amazing Sports Leaders here at Coombeshead Academy with over 40 of them helping to make sure the day ran smoothly. The day consisted of two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon where the students would complete one session of athletics and one of the game-based then swap over. The focus for game-based activities were Dartmoor three ball and Handball where they competed within their schools. SPORT & PE Throughout the first session, schools played a variety of different schools where they were looking to win the Sportsmanship Trophy. This trophy was chosen by our leaders who had the power to give it to the school who played the fairest, showed good teamwork and were motivational towards everyone around them. The second session was all about olympic athletic events, where students competed against each other to get the best scores: shot putt, long jump, javelin, 60m sprint and hurdles made up the events for this session and each student competed in all of them to get the best score possible. This trophy was all about the school that scored the best throughout the Athletics events. Lunchtime was exciting as we had the Ice cream van attend to cool everyone down and all the students went home with a Coombeshead PE bag at the end of the day. We would like to say a massive Thank you to Tesco, Newton Abbot for providing all of our water for the event. By the end of the day all the scores were very close! The winners of the Athletics Trophy were Ipplepen Primary School and the winners of the Sportsmanship Trophy were Blackpool Primary School. An amazing day with amazing staff and students from the local Community. Well done everyone that took part!
4 YEAR EIGHT THEATRE IN EDUCATION PRIMARY TOURING COMPANY - CINDERELLA S BEANSTALK EXPRESSIVE ARTS Coombeshead Academy s Theatre-in-Education company have toured for the second time this academic year a performance entitled Cinderella s Beanstalk by Richard Coleman and supplied by Lazy Bees Scripts. This production mixed the two fairy tales of Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk. The year eight students performed to children at seven primary schools which included Bradley Barton, Decoy, Wolborough, Bovey Tracey, All Saints Marsh, Blackpool and Rydon, as well as a performance at Coombeshead Academy. As always the primary school children s reaction was extremely enthusiastic. They laughed, joined in with songs and thoroughly enjoyed the Great British Bake Off! The Coombeshead year eight students worked so well as a team and engaged the audience, with a variety of comical and memorable characters. The narrators interacted with the audience extremely well, encouraging them to be involved in the action and even inviting primary school students to join in the activities on stage. The final dance at the ball was energetic, comical and highly entertaining, a great way of finishing the show. The cast thoroughly enjoyed the reactions from the audiences and this touring show should be remembered as a project they should be extremely proud of! Coombeshead Academy Theatre in Education company is back on the road touring primary schools in December with a Christmas show, which again will hopefully have lots of audience participation!
