NEWSLETTER Sunday 8 th -22 nd February 2015 Club Announcements Welcome back to Marden Russets Junior Section s newsletter, which is ed to members, families and friends every week. Photos of matches or any hockey-related issues are always welcome. News needs to be with Carol Ridge: familyridge@fastmail.co.uk by 9am every Tuesday morning. You can also view the newsletter on the Marden Russets website in the Juniors section, along with archive copies from earlier in the season, club registration forms and this year s Junior Brochure: Distribution is handled by Junior Administrator, Joy Henson: russetsmarden@yahoo.co.uk Half Term Holiday Due to February Half Term many squads are taking time off so please check the schedule carefully and also keep an eye on your s in case of any last minute changes! There is no newsletter next week over the Half Term holiday period - the next edition will be out during the week of 23 rd February JAC Tier 2 Successes Congratulations to all Marden juniors who have successfully made it through to Tier 2 of the JAC. A full list will follow after Half Term. If your child has been successful please a photo to familyridge@fastmail.co.uk for inclusion in the newsletter. Commiserations go to those who did not make it through this time and we hope that they will carry on working hard and try again next year. Calling potential sponsors and donors! Marden Russets Juniors presents a fantastic opportunity for sponsors - we have more than 300 junior players, and their parents, who are involved in hockey for two thirds of the year, and many more who follow progress through the weekly newsletter and local press. We are now planning our new ground which will offer even more high profile sponsorship options as we up our game and host more high level tournaments with better facilities.
The Club is always seeking to raise additional much-needed funding to help meet the many costs involved with delivering a high standard of hockey for all our members. In recent years, the costs have risen dramatically, and we now really need to increase our fundraising, primarily due to the rising need to employ staff to perform tasks that used to be done by volunteers. We have a number of ideas for items that could be sponsored: signage, hockey balls, hoody tops for our excellent Young Leaders, goalkeeper smocks, advertising via the newsletter, brochure, website, and Container Café. In due course, even the player s clothing could also be sponsored. Ideally we are looking for a multi-year commitment but we are equally open to discuss any suggestions. Please can anyone with contacts or ideas for sponsors (or donors) contact Charlie Ridge: c.ridge@impaxam.com. Thanks in advance for your help. Sunday Summary The Week That Was U13/14 Girls win against Sevenoaks 10-1 Marden played very well, worked as a team, got into space and passed the ball well.
Clive Felton, U14A Boys The boys entered this match knowing nothing less than victory would see them through to the next stages of the EH cup. While the match was not a classic one in term of quality, it was action-packed and full of drama, with both sides creating numerous scoring opportunities. Russets went 1-0 up after Ben Fox cleverly created space for a reverse stick shot at a short corner. However a defensive lapse shortly after gifted TW a short corner and they equalised from a good shot. Russets had picked up two injuries in the first half so we restructured at half time and this paid off with some of TW s creative midfield options being cut off. Marden looked more dangerous in attack and scored a good second from an attack down the left which Sam Wheatley bravely turned into the net, injuring himself in the process. The advantage though was very short-lived with TW going straight up the other end, winning a corner which they scored via a deflection, despite Sam s great effort to save it. This buoyed up TW and they raised their game, scoring a third shortly after this to take a 3-2 lead. Russets though created at least five short corner opportunities after this to level the match but were not able to convert their chances. All in all a tough loss on the boys, when a draw was probably a fair result. The difference between the two teams was the short corner conversion rate and our inability to play the ball safely out of defence, particularly on 16s.
U16B Girls win against Sevenoaks 3-0 Paul Sunnucks, U16 Boys Marden U16 Boys played Tunbridge Wells (TW) in the National Cup on Sunday. The game started brightly with Marden well in ascendance, unfortunately they could not make use of their possession and the game remained 0-0 for the first 15 minutes when, against the run of play, TW scored. Not to be put down by this the boys responded well and were soon leading 2-1, with goals from open play for Dan Edwards and Wilf Andrews. Half time came and after a pretty stern talking-to reminding the team about structure and width, the second half was a much better affair. Two quick goals from Dan made it 4-1, when TW broke and made it 4-2. This was the last chance of a TW revival as the boys streamed forward in wave after wave of good attacking play. Six more goals followed, all from open play except for a penalty flick. So the final score was a 10-2 victory: 7 goals for Dan, 1 each for Wilf, Kit Freeman and Ollie Lee-Amies. This cemented Marden in third place in their league, but unfortunately not high enough to go through to the next phase.
U16 Boys contd Considering the league had teams fielding men s sides - 2 from National Premier, 2 National East, 1 Southern Prem 1 and 1 Southern Prem 2 - it is a credit to the boys and the club to compete so well at this level. Dan scores from the spot Ollie in control Our centre back, Ed, in foreign territory Wilf, which way will I go?!
