Wrap Up Warmly! Please ensure that your children are wrapped up warmly when they come to hockey, whether for training or matches it is hard to enjoy playing when you are freezing because you haven t remembered your hat/scarf/gloves/fleece. While the weather remains bitterly cold, wear plenty of layers you can always take some off if you warm up but do remember to take them home! February Half Term Hockey Course at Tonbridge School Tonbridge School Hockey Academy, led by Kevin Johnson, England Hockey Centrally Contracted Coach, is running a series of specialist skills workshops over February Half Term: 18 th, 19 th and 20 th February For further information, please kgj@tonbridge-school.org. (Flyer attached). Ashley Jackson practicing a drag flick on the Olympic pitch St Valentine s Party One of our very supportive social members - Martin Lark - enjoyed our last Valentine's function so much that he has arranged another for Thursday 14 th February - bar opens 7.00pm. There are a few places left. Tickets cost per head. Details and tickets from the bar or via a message left for David Eltringham on
Sunday Summary The Week That Was U10 Mixed Manager, Sam Heard says: A huge thank you to Rob Hillier, Rachel Fox and Hamish Cloke for running this Triangular at home. All the teams enjoyed themselves. Rob Hillier reports on Marden Magics: Marden Magic U10 s did themselves proud, drawing all three of their matches and only conceding one goal. Playing some 'grown up' hockey, they made good use of the pitch, passed well and tackled strongly. There are plenty of encouraging signs as individuals begin to look to distribute the ball to teammates that have found space. Rachel Fox reports on Marden Marvels: The U10 s had a great tournament but the Marvels had some tough competition. We played BromBeck first and unfortunately lost 3-0 but the children fought hard and played better and better thoroughout. They played Sevenoaks next and again lost but they displayed some great hockey and showed much improvement. The final match led to a well-taken goal from Danny to finish on a high. U12 Boys Coach, Scott Moen, reports on U12 Boys Triangular at BromBeck: We had strong opposition in BromBeck, BBHC and Ashford. Our A team drew their first game 0-0, and then started moving up the gears, winning their next three games 3-2, 7-0 and 8-1. Their attacking play was breathtaking at times and by the end they were unstoppable. Our B and C teams didn't win a game but are really developing their team play and playing with great enthusiasm. U12 Girls Manager, Sam Heard, reports: The U12 Girls travelled to Sutton Valence for a very cold Triangular! A big thank you goes to Clive Baxter for giving up his time to coach and umpire at this tournament. A Team results: Marden v Sutton Valence 0-0 Marden v BromBeck 0-1 Marden v Sevenoaks 2-0 B Team results: Marden v Ashford 0-1 Marden v BromBeck 0-1 Marden v Sevenoaks 5-0 The B Team had a poor start but once the girls had warmed up and started to use the wings and play as a team, they began to play impressive hockey, but they all got very cold. A great finish with a strong victory against Sevenoaks.
U14 Girls Coach, Richard Day reports: Our U14As may have lost 4-0 to Sevenoaks but we certainly put up a strong fight. After going 2-0 down in the first half, we came back strongly after half time and dominated the play for much of the rest of the game. Unfortunately, we couldn t convert our opportunities and Sevenoaks scored two more goals on the break, but we have many positives to take away from the match. Well played everyone!
U16 Boys Will Griggs about to evade two Gore Court defenders. Note Max Streak in the top left: he has seen an area of space to run into and is signalling to Will where he wants the ball. Great matchplay! Coach, Charlie Ridge, reports on their 3-1 win away against Gore Court: What an amazing game! The boys lost a very close game to Gore Court 2-3 before Christmas, so were seeking revenge this time, but expected a hard game. They were right, Gore Court were well-drilled and marked us very well. However, we started really well the first 20 minutes were simply fantastic: the best the team have ever played. Teamwork and passing created a few half chances, which Anthony Christopherson (yet again) and Will Griggs struck home confidently. 2-0 and all was good. Gore Court then got into their stride, and showed what dangerous players they had in attack. Our new face masks were soon tested, unfortunately to see an excellent drag flick by Gore Court sail into the goal. From then on, Gore Court looked more and more dangerous. Euan Neale had his best game ever in goal, confidently coming forward to clear the ball and protect the lead. But it was end to end stuff; we really benefitted from having 14 players to give players rests and stay fresh. The quality of Gore Court s defence meant that easy attacking passes were hard to find, and we fell into the trap of only playing hard hits into the D which were usually cut out. Two minutes to go, and we were still 2-1 up, but were now mostly defending. Gore Court were clearly getting frustrated, complaining to each other and to the officials. To our great credit, we didn t join in and stayed focussed on the game, even under extreme pressure.
And then came the highlight of the match, perhaps the season so far. Ollie Ridge controlled a bouncing ball around half way and instantly attacked, beating two players with excellent close skills. He was now entering the D on the left side and switched the ball from left to right, creating a tiny chink of space, and released a drag flick towards goal to see the ball fly into the back netting. 3-1 and the game was won! 14 very happy faces (plus two coaches who could hardly contain themselves) celebrated a memorable win. Thanks to the enthusiastic support from the parents. Tom Mitchell winds up to smash another ball into the D. The opposition clearly aren t looking forward to defending the hit! Sunday Schedule The Week Ahead Sunday 10 th February U10s No Training U12 Boys Training at Cranbrook 11am-12.30pm U12 Girls Training at Cranbrook am U14 Boys Training at Cranbrook 11am-12.30pm U14 Girls U14B match against Maidstone at home at Marden am. 8 SPECIALIST SKILLS WORKSHOPS We are delighted to be hosting a series of highly specific workshops which will break down individual player development into separate key components. By doing this we can concentrate fully on the topic areas and therefore cover far more content as a result. Please note these are not workshops for beginners, only for those who regularly play the game. The workshops will be delivered by Tonbridge School Hockey Academy Coaches Kevin Johnson (England Hockey Centrally Contracted Coach, England U21 Women Assistant Coach) and Leigh Bierman (Ex South Africa International female player, England Hockey Junior County and Regional Coach). DAY 2 Tuesday 19th Feb 10:00-12:00 Drag flicking For the first time in our Academy we will be running this specialist workshop for all players who are looking to learn the complex art of drag flicking. We will be breaking down the main components of the skill from the approach, to the pick up, collection and release so that each player can develop during the workshop at their own pace. An absolute MUST to attend if you are looking to add this skill to your Hockey armoury. 13:00-15:00 Core Skills Development You can select a workshop from the following options ; DAY 1 Monday 18th Feb 10:00 12:00 Goal scoring This workshop will examine all facets of goal scoring, from all areas of the circle. Exploring open and reverse stick shooting techniques, making shooting space in the circle, shooting under pressure, shooting off both feet, shooting from the backspace, flicking and deflections. A must for all potential goal scorers! 13:00-15:00 Attacking circle entry A hugely important yet somewhat neglected aspect of development, during this workshop we will be looking at developing understanding as to how and where we should be looking to enter the attacking circle and once in there how we make the most of our opportunities. We will be working with players on creating a plan and demonstrating the right intent to increase positive outcomes for their team in the attacking circle. The content will include entry points into the circle, shooting and passing zones, jumping in front of defenders, lead running in the circle and emptying and filling spaces A good time for players to brush up on all core skills involved in playing the game, or learn some new ones! We will be covering all ball manipulation, from carrying techniques to 3D lifted and squeeze skills, hitting, receiving and passing on the move off both feet, keeping possession under pressure using skills and lifted balls from flicks and aerials. COST DAY 3 Wednesday 20th Feb 13:00-15:00 Defending A crucial area for all players, as defending is required from ALL positions in the modern game. We will cover closing down, channelling, jab, block and shave tackling techniques, marking, intercepting and general defensive decision making. All sessions will take place at Tonbridge School Sports Centre One workshop : 20 Four workshops : 65 Two workshops : 35 Five workshops : 80 Three workshops: 50 Tonbridge School Centre, London Road, Tonbridge, TN10 3AD.
