Definitins HSE: The Health and Safety Executive. Ratinale & Scpe f the Plicy This plicy applies t all members f the EC cmmunity (including staff, students, vlunteers, visitrs, partners) wh wrk bth inside and utside f EC premises, and sets ut hw EC discharges its respnsibilities relating t the prvisin f First Aid. This plicy utlines ECs respnsibility t prvide adequate and apprpriate First Aid t students, staff and visitrs, and the prvisins and prcedures in place t meet that respnsibility. This plicy will cntribute t the safeguarding f pupils/students/staff at EC schls by: Prviding a clear plan fr the prvisin f First Aid. T identify the first aid needs f the schl T ensure that First Aid prvisin is available at all times while peple are n schl premises and als ff the premises n visits Outlining respnsibilities f all staff and specific rles. Guiding Principles EC is cmmitted t prviding a caring, friendly and safe envirnment fr ur students. EC is cmmitted t cmplying with all Health & Safety legislatin including the prvisin f First Aid. Relevant Legislatin The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulatins 1981 - require emplyers t prvide adequate and apprpriate equipment, facilities and persnnel t ensure their emplyees receive immediate attentin if they are injured r taken ill at wrk. These Regulatins apply t all wrkplaces including thse with less than five emplyees and t the self-emplyed. Plicy Statements 1. Respnse t injuries and illness 1.1 Schl staff, especially designated First aiders, are expected t use their best endeavurs at all times, particularly in emergencies, t secure the welfare f students. 1.2 EC will ensure that cases f injury r illness are respnded t immediately. 1.3 When necessary, an ambulance r ther prfessinal medical help will be called. 2. First Aiders EC will: 2.1 Ensure there are a sufficient number f First Aid trained staff in Centres in relatin t the number f individuals. 2.2 Ensure that First Aiders hld a valid certificate f cmpetence issued by an rganisatin apprved by the Health and Safety Executive. 2.3 Ensure First Aiders are identified n psters arund Centres. 2.4 Ensure that the prvisin f First Aid is taken int accunt when planning leave s that there is always an adequate number f First Aid trained staff present. 2.5 Ensure First Aid staff are trained t infrm receptin staff when they are n the premises. 3. Off-site activities EC will ensure that: 3.1 Thse staff taking students ff site n a regular basis, fr example sprts activities, will be First Aid trained and will take a First Aid pack with them. 3.2 Wherever pssible, sprts activities and visits take place at venues where First Aid facilities are available. 3.3 Off-site activity Risk Assessments are carried ut with the prvisin f First Aid incrprated. 4. First Aid bxes EC will ensure that: 4.1 The apprpriate number f First Aid cntainers shuld be available accrding t the risk assessment fr the site. 4.2 Each First Aid bx is equipped t the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulatins 1981. 4.3 All First Aid cntainers are marked with a white crss n a green backgrund. 4.4 A member f staff is appinted t be respnsible fr regular checks and replenishment f First Aid bxes. 4.5 After use, the appinted member f staff respnsible fr First Aid bxes is cntacted t ensure replacement f used items. 4.6 Lcatins f First Aid bxes are signpsted t staff and students. 5. Precautins against infectins EC will: 5.1 Ensure all staff are trained t take precautins t avid infectin and fllw basic hygiene prcedures. 5.2 Ensure staff are trained t use dispsable glves, wash any basin facility used, and take adequate care when dealing with bld and ther bdily fluids and dispsing f dressings and equipment. 6. Accident reprting Under the Reprting f Injuries, Diseases and Dangerus Occurrences Regulatins 1995, sme accidents must be reprted t the HSE. Hwever, all accidents, hwever minr, must be recrded s that the incident can be investigated, the cause identified, crrective actin taken and safer wrking cnditins develped. Detailed and accurate reprts are therefre necessary. EC will therefre ensure that: 6.1 There is an accident bk present in all centres t recrd incidents. 6.2 All accidents (hwever, minr) are recrded in the schl accident bk. Details required in the accident bk are: Date, time and place f the incident Name f injured/ill persn Details f the injury/illness What happened t the persn immediately afterwards Name and signature f the First Aider 6.3 Recrds will be kept fr a minimum f seven years. 6.4 The fllwing incidents are reprted t the HSE: Invlving emplyees r self-emplyed peple wrking n the premises: Accidents resulting in death r majr injury (including as a result f physical vilence) Accidents which prevent the injured persn frm ding their wrk fr mre than three days Invlving students and visitrs: Accidents resulting in the persn being killed r being taken frm the site f the accident t hspital and the accident arises ut f r in cnnectin with wrk i.e. if it relates t: Any schl activity, n r ff the premises The way the schl activity has been rganised and managed Equipment, machinery r substances The design r cnditin f the premises Title: P005 Fist Aid Plicy Versin: V 2.0 Date: 30/09/2016 Page 5

7. Casualties wh need t g t hspital but d nt need an ambulance 7.1 Staff and visitrs - If a persn is able t get t the hspital withut the need fr an ambulance, they will be sent in a taxi, accmpanied if it is felt necessary. 7.2 Students - If a student is under 18 r has little English a member f staff will accmpany them in a taxi. All ther students shuld be asked if they wuld like smene t g with them. This wuld usually be a member f Student Services/Welfare. Receptin shuld be given a cntact number. Whether the student can be left nce they are checked in will depend n circumstances and will be at the discretin f the member f staff. All taxis can be bked n the schl accunt. 8. Re-assessment f First Aid Prvisin 8.1 Regular assessments will be carried ut t ensure that the current prvisin is crrect, particularly fllwing changes t staff, building, activities etc. 8.2 The number f trained First Aiders and Appinted Persns will be mnitred. 9. Inductin, CPD & training 9.1 The First Aid plicy and guidance dcuments will frm part f the inductin prgramme fr new staff. 9.2 First Aiders will be alerted t the need fr refresher curses and training sessins will be rganised if required. 10. Visitrs t EC premises 10.1 Visitrs will be made aware f EC s First Aid plicy n arrival at the schl, will be ntified f First Aiders and First Aid bxes, and will be given infrmatin abut what t d if they are invlved in an accident. Rles and Respnsibilities The fllwing sectin utlines the rles and respnsibilities f all EC staff tgether with rle specific respnsibilities in relatin t this plicy. All staff All staff will: Have read and be familiar with ECs First Aid plicy. Knw wh the designated First Aiders are at their centre and hw t cntact them. Reprt any accidents t a designated First Aider/The Centre Directr. Operatinal Leadership The Operatinal leadership are respnsible fr the apprval f the Anti-Bullying Plicy and fr reviewing the effectiveness f the plicy. The Operatinal Leadership will ensure that: EC has First Aid plicy and this is reviewed annually. Centres have prcedures in place fr the prvisin f First Aid and recrding and reprting f incidents. Centre Directr The Centre Directr will: Hld verall respnsibility fr the health and safety f staff, students and anyne else n the premises, including teachers, nn-teaching staff, students and visitrs, (including cntractrs). Ensure their centre has an adequate number f trained Fist Aid staff. Ensure that designated First Aiders are signpsted t staff and students thrughut the Centre. Ntify the HSE f fatal and majr injuries and dangerus ccurrences withut delay. Ensure First Aiders exercise their duties in keeping the Accident Recrd Bk up t date and replenishing First Aid Bxes. Mnitr First Aid prvisin and alert First Aiders t the need fr refresher curses. Organise any First Aid training required. Ensure all staff are infrmed abut EC s First Aid arrangements and the lcatin f equipment. First Aiders First Aiders are respnsible fr: Prviding immediate help t casualties with cmmn injuries r illnesses and thse arising frm specific hazards at the schl. Ensuring that, when necessary, an ambulance r ther prfessinal medical help is called. Updating the accident bk after any treatment r cnsultatin. Ensuring all first aid bxes are kept fully stcked and purchase supplies when necessary. Carrying ut checks t ensure the Accident Recrd Bk is kept up t date.
