We are committed to providing an ideal format for ballet dancers with appropriate venues and a qualified judging panel. We promise an event that recognizes your talents and the abilities of you and your ballet dancers. General Rules Dancers must be registered with a studio. No independent entries will be accepted. Entries will not be processed until full payment is received. Each solo, duo or trio dancer must be entered into at least one group to qualify for any Highscore awards. Soloists may enter themselves only once per category. A second solo in the same category will be for adjudication only and must be specified at time of registration. Duo and trio dancers must have a change of partners to compete twice in the same category. Levels are calculated based hours of all ballet instruction per week - all ballet class time to be included. Re- dances are permitted in Level 1 and Level 2 categories only. Re- dances are permitted in all categories due to technical problems or anything not of the dancer s fault. Categories may be combined or separated based on entries received and at the discretion of event management. Entry Information Entry deadline is December 15, 2015. ** Please note change Entry fees are non- refundable. We reserve the right to refuse entries. Studios must pay by certified cheque or money order. Studio cheques will not be accepted. Entries will not be processed until full payment is received. Entries will be accepted on a first- come, first- served basis. We welcome all early submissions. Each late entry is to pay a $15 surcharge and will be accepted only if the schedule permits. Entry fees do not include GST. Schedule sent to email provided on registration forms at least 4 weeks prior to event. Please ensure email provided is correct. Categories Classical Classical Pointe Demi Character Contemporary Ballet Interpretive Modern Repertoire (Levels 3 and 4 only) Adult 19-29 years and 30+ years All Categories: Choreography may contain props, touching; lip synching, acro/gymnastics moves and floor work in all categories. Category Descriptions CLASSICAL Routine uses any specific ballet technique (R.A.D., Cecchetti, Vaganova, etc.) and classical steps in ballet slippers only. CLASSICAL POINTE Routine uses any specific ballet technique and classical steps. Pointe shoes only. DEMI- CHARACTER Routine has a strong classical Ballet base while portraying a character throughout. Pointe shoes or Ballet slippers may be worn. Category will not be separated based on shoe style. CONTEMPORARY Routine is based on an unstructured dance form influenced by Ballet technique. It draws from alternative or newer philosophies of movement that depart from classical techniques. It is ever changing and evolving and should involve emotion. All styles of footwear are accepted, including pointe shoes and bare feet. Category will not be separated based on footwear. INTERPRETIVE Any ballet technique may be used as long as the body is used to translate and interpret an idea or mood, feeling or emotion, human condition or dramatic expression combined with dance movement. MODERN Routine is a free, expressive style of dance style that includes contract and release, floor work and fall and recovery. Style is based on the methods of Graham, Limon, Horton, Hawkins, Humphrey etc. REPERTOIRE Level 3 and 4 soloists only. ADULT DANCE - 19-29 years or 30+ years Any routine where the average age of all dancers is 19-29 or 30+. Routines may be any dance form. Dances with 2 or more dancers aged 19 and over must be entered into Adult Dance. Categories will be split depending on number of entries and at the discretion of event management. Levels Level 1 0 3.0 hours of ballet instruction per week. Level 2 3.25 6.0 hours of ballet instruction per week. Level 3 6.25 9.75 hours of ballet instruction per week. Level 4 10.0 or more hours of ballet instruction per week. PLEASE NOTE: All ballet class time to be included: technical, syllabus, ballet based choreography, modern and contemporary ballet. More Info: Please calculate level by averaging the hours of instruction per duo, trio or group member. (0.5 is rounded to the higher level). Dancers may not enter a lesser level than previously danced in at Festival Du Ballet. Example of calculating level: 1.5 hours ballet technique, 1 hour modern, 1 hour contemporary ballet and 1.5 hours ballet choreography per week = 5 hours of ballet based dancing = Level 2
Age Divisions Calculate division using dancer s age as of December 31, 2015. Duos, trios, and groups - add and average the age of all the dancers (0.5 is rounded to the higher age). Age Divisions may be combined or separated based on entries received and at the discretion of event management. Adult Category: Solo/Duo/Trios - If ONE or more dancers are aged 19 and over they must enter the Adult Category. Groups If TWO or more dancers in a routine are aged 19 years and over they must enter and perform in the Adult Category. NEW in 2016 Adjudication/Awards Three qualified, experienced adjudicators specializing in the art of ballet. Scores are out of a total of 300. Each routine will receive 3 handwritten comment sheets with their scores. 1st, 2nd and 3rd and Performance placements given - every dancer receives a medal at Festival Du Ballet. Awards Sessions to be held at least 3 times per day. Highscore Awards will be presented at the completion of each level. 12 Choreography Awards per event. The Rose Gala Finale held at the end of the event. Music/Time Limits MUSIC Teachers or a studio representative are responsible for playing music on equipment provided by the competition. Please be sure to carry backup copies of all music. CD and ipod connection will be available. TIME LIMITS SOLOS, DUOS, TRIOS - 3 minutes GROUPS - 5 minutes Dancers are timed from the first note of the music until the last dancer exits the stage. All dances are timed by a Festival Du Ballet timer. Overtime entries may be subject to penalties and will not be eligible for Highscore awards. Please ensure prop set- up and take- down is prompt.
Audience/Dancer Information Admission for audience is $3 per day. Programs are $4. Dancers are FREE for the entire event (must sign in each day). At the request of event choreographers there is to be NO camera or video equipment of any kind used in the theatre. Professional photographers and- or videographers will be at the event if possible. Doors to theatre will open 30 minutes prior to the start of each day. Doors to the change rooms and lobby will open one hour prior to the start of each day. Studio Directors/Teachers A green room with coffee and light meals will be provided to all registered teachers and studio directors. If possible, we will provide a monitor of the stage in the green room. Please sign in at the front desk upon arrival at the event. If your name is not found on the list please find your studio director. Admission and program complimentary for all registered teachers and studio directors. Teachers are responsible for playing their own music on equipment provided by the competition - both CD and ipod connections available. Please be sure to carry backup copies of all music. Event directors are always on site to answer your questions. Adjudication sheets are available for pick up by Teachers or an authorized studio representative only after each Highscore Award Session (with the exception of the highscore winners in each level).
