Janssen Elementary School Family Newsletter Janssen Journal Dates to Remember: November 21 Parent/Teacher Conferences, 2:00 Dismissal 24 & 25 No School December 1 Parent/Teacher Conferences, 2:00 Dismissal 9 Noon Dismissal 20 Winter Concert Gr.1 @ 2:15 & 6:00 & Gr.2 @ 2:45 & 7:00 26-Jan.2 No School Concert Info. Mar.16, Gr.3 & 4 Spring Concert Dear Janssen School Community, From the start of this school year, I have asked our teachers to identify what behaviors they want to see from our student that will result in successful mathematicians and to push out these behaviors during their teaching and student work times. At our staff meeting earlier this month, I asked for our teachers to share what behaviors they were currently pushing out during math. Persevere, explain your thinking, ask questions, look for patterns, make connections, and be flexible in solving problems were common behaviors that teachers were not only pushing out but seeing students do in their classrooms. I followed with the question: How are these behaviors impacting our mathematicians? Common responses included increased confidence, engagement, and positive attitudes. Our students behaviors are having a positive effect on our unit assessments as well. A reason for sharing this with you is to emphasize there exists a balance of what to teach with how and why to teach. We believe this balance pushes confidence and engagement resulting in our students seeing value and being excited when doing math. On a different note what a great turnout for our PTO sponsored Family Fun Night. I want to thank all the people who volunteered their time to make this happen and all the families and guests that attended. The proceeds from this fundraiser will go to purchasing equipment for our music program. Great work from our Janssen community You rock Woof! Woof! If you are interested in helping with our PTO, you can use the following email to contact them: janssenpto@gmail.com The last thing I would like to share is dressing for the upcoming changes in our weather. The colder weather will be coming and so will the need to wear warmer coats and accessories (gloves/mittens, hats, etc.). Please continue to enforce your expectations from home and we will do the same at school. Sincerely, November Issue, 2016 Hercules Nikolaou, Ph.D. Janssen Elementary School Principal

BACKGROUND CHECKS If you are interested in volunteering at school, whether in your child s classroom or chaperoning a field trip, you need to have a completed background check form on file with the school district. Please keep in mind that these take 2 weeks to complete. If you are not sure if you have a completed check on file or if you have any questions, please contact the school office. EMERGENCY MEDICATIONS Please be aware that emergency medications that are provided for use during the school day will not be accessible before or after school hours. Parents and students must plan ahead to have emergency medication available during school activities such as clubs and sports. If an emergency arises and a student does not have their emergency medication available, 911 will be called. PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent/teacher conferences this year will be on Monday, November 21 and Thursday, December 1 from 5:00-8:00. If you did not sign up for a time and have not received anything from your teacher on an assigned time, please call the office at 788-7915 to set up a time. Also just a reminder that school will be dismissed at 2:00 both these days and that will be no child care provided after 2:00. JANSSEN COUNSELOR CORNER Happy November Janssen Families, Life Skills In October, our Life Skills lessons at every grade focused on drug and alcohol awareness and how to make healthy choices regarding the things we put in our bodies. Student had wonderful discussions about the healthy choices that they make and about some of their favorite healthy foods and drinks. Students also came away with the understanding to always seek out adult help if they are unsure if something is healthy. During November, our Life Skills classes are focusing on protective behaviors, or the behaviors that can keep thems safe and who they can go to if they are feeling unsafe. At each grade level we will be talking in grade level appropriate terms about safe vs. unsafe touch, how to deal with strangers, and who the trusted people are in each child s safety network. Holiday Season With the holiday season approaching, it is important that we remember and assist families who have fallen on hard times and might be struggling. Both at Janssen and within the district, we have several seasonal events that help us provide some extra support to those families in need. If you find your family in need of some support or know of a family close to you who have fallen on hard times, please do not hesitate to reach out. We may not be able to meet everyone s needs but we can hopefully meet some. As always, if you have any questions about the lessons being taught in Life Skills, or if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child, please call or email.
