MIDYEAR SHOWCASE We love being able to show you what your child has been learning and how much they have improved and we are sure that you as parents do too. For this reason we run a Midyear Showcase at the end of Term 2 and an End of Year Spectacular at the end of Term 4 (before the Christmas rush!) Midyear Showcase Saturday 24 th June 2017 at St John s Uniting Church Wahroonga Your dancer will learn a routine for the first half of the year and will then perform for family and friends. This is a stress free, relaxed and fun day that allows your children to show you what they have been learning and gives them the opportunity to dance on stage for the first time. It is not compulsory but we highly recommend it, as it eases your child into performing on stage and is done in class uniform, so it feels just like class only better! END OF YEAR SPECTACULAR End of Year Spectacular Sunday 26 th November 2017 Our most anticipated event of the year... Your dancer will learn a new routine for the second half of the year and will perform on stage in an amazing costume... It is what our dancers work towards all year! At the end of the year (before the Christmas rush) we produce a concert where your dancers can have the time of their life up on stage. It s a warm, positive and amazing experience for the children performing. There are a few additional costs associated with the concert; they include a costume (which is paid by term installments per term), tights (available from the studio), correct dance shoes and other options by choice. Please carefully read below for appox. costs: CONCERT COSTS: The range of prices to be expected around concert time is as follows: Costume $80 per costume, Tickets approx. $20 per adult $15 per concession $10 per child (dancers do not need to buy a ticket), tights $10-$14 and photos (optional) $30 for disc of 5 photos. EXCITING NEW THINGS HAPPENING AT JIGSAW DANCE IN 2017 We are very excited to announce that in 2017 we will be offering HIP HOP classes for all age levels. These classes offer a different style of dance focusing on accented movements, isolations and urban dance styles. All movements and music are age appropriate and suitable for our different age groups. We ll have them popping, locking and doing cool moves in no time! CHEERLEADING/TUMBLING CLASS: We are also very excited to announce that we are running our very own cheerleading classes that focus on pom dance skills, floor work and also cheer stunts and tricks. This class is suitable for ages 6+ FRIDAY CLASSES: Classes in 2016 thrived, with many of our classes filling up. To give our families more options and to allow us to keep class sizes capped and accept new enrolments, we have added a Friday option with a range of classes available. 4

UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS & DRESS CODE It is preferred that all students wear the studio uniform. The students tend to feel more comfortable and confident when they look the same as their classmates. We feel it gives a sense of belonging and team atmosphere. All uniform pieces can be purchased through the studio and we aim to keep costs to a minimum so it is affordable for everyone. Shoes can be purchased from Bloch at Hornsby Westfield. Appearance should be clean, neat and tidy for all classes. Hair must be tied back out of the face. It is important that the correct shoes are purchased for each style. Dance shoes are to be worn during classes. For the first couple of weeks, any singlet/top and shorts/tights are fine to get started if you are not sure about your child s confidence to participate in the class. Sneakers are fine to wear until you are sure that your child will be continuing the class. All students will need to wear the correct shoes and studio uniform for our Midyear Showcase, so it is a good idea to get them from the start of the year UNIFORM OPTIONS GENRE GIRLS BOYS BALLET Black Leotard Black Jigsaw bonds Black Skirt singlet Pink Tights Black form fitting pants Black Headband Black leather ballet (optional) shoes Available in Package $60.00 Pink Leather Ballet Shoes JAZZ/TAP/HIP HOP/CHEER Black Leotard or Black Jigsaw Tank Top (NEW) Black Jigsaw Shorts Tan Tights Available in Package $55.00 Black lace up or slip on Jazz Shoes Tan Buckle up Tap shoes Black jazz boots or sneakers (hip hop) White sneakers (cheer) CONTEMPORARY Black Leotard or Tank Top Black Jigsaw Shorts Pink Convertible tights (rolled to knee) Foot Thongs Either black jigsaw bonds singlet or b-boys tank top Black shorts or pants Black lace up or slip on Jazz shoes Black lace up tap shoes may be worn Black jazz boots or sneakers (hip hop) White sneakers (cheer) Black Jigsaw bonds singlet Black pants or shorts Foot Thongs 5

DANCE EDUCATION COSTS & PAYMENT DETAILS At Jigsaw Dance we aim on keeping fees to a minimum and so this is why we have developed a few options for your convenience. PAYMENTS ARE BY THE TERM: At the end of each term you will be emailed an invoice for the following term with your dancer s term costs. To help us with our admin, these should be paid for by Week 4 of the term. In fairness to all dancers, classes need to be paid for whether your child attends the lesson or not. If you are going on holiday, classes still need to be paid for to maintain your position in the class. If you happen to miss a class, you are more than welcome to attend a similar class within the same term to make up for the missed lesson. CLASSES FOR 2017 Classes in 2016 thrived and as such I have created several new classes into our timetable in order to allow more space for new enrolments and to keep class sizes capped. Students are not placed in classes based primarily on their age, but experience, ability and friends are important factors that can determine what class is best suited for them. In 2017 we are excited to announce that we have completely restructured our programs to allow students to learn at a consistent pace whilst still delivering a vibrant, fun and nurturing dance experience that celebrates every child s achievements. This program has been specifically designed to allow a beautiful transition into the next level age program, as your child progresses through their dancing. Every student in our Jigsaw Family is a gem and is precious. Within each of the age groups, a specialised program has been developed to allow students to continually improve in technique, coordination and choreography. Each of our classes run off a themed lesson plan to allow students to learn in a fun and creative environment, giving opportunity to develop the whole child where confidence, self esteem and friendships are a key factor. TEENY TINY TOES GROUP TWINKLE TOES GROUP TOPAZ GROUP TURQUOISE GROUP SAPPHIRE GROUP EMERALD GROUP RUBY GROUP DIAMOND GROUP AGE STRUCTURE 2017 2 to 3 years of age 3 to 5 years of age 5 to 7 years of age 6 to 8 years of age 7 to 9 years of age 8 to 12 years of age 10 to 13 years of age 14 years and up TEENY TINY TOES & TWINKLE TOES GROUP Designed with the littlest dancers in mind, these classes encourage creative thinking, imagination and confidence in a fun and magical environment. Each week we go on a new and exciting adventure exploring different elements of dance whilst also developing a positive self-esteem and friendships within the classroom. These classes really are a magical journey between the teacher and the dancers and are a perfect stepping stone to beginning your child in the world of dance. TEENY TINY TOES COMBO CLASS: Designed to give our littlest dancers a taste of all that dance has to offer, this 45 minute combo class is the perfect introduction to the world of dance and will give your little one a chance to wiggle their body, stomp their feet and leap like a ballerina. This class gives our little tots a taste of Jazz, Hip Hop and Ballet all in one class! TWINKLE TOES JAZZ: These classes are fun and energetic and allow your little one to develop their ear for music and their feet for dancing. Incorporating basic jazz movement, coordination and singing and drama to familiar songs, this is the perfect class to get your child started in dancing. TWINKLE TOES BALLET: These classes are a beautiful opportunity for your little one to learn the beginnings of basic ballet technique and terminology, whilst also allowing them to go on a magical journey of smiles, twirls and leaps. These classes still incorporate the same energy and fun as our Jazz lessons, but are designed with our little princes and princesses in mind! 8

TWINKLE TOES HIP HOP: A new and exciting class in 2017, this class gives your children a perfect introduction to modern moves and techniques. Sharing the same upbeat nature as our Jazz classes, Hip Hop also uses trendy and funky music where dancers can learn groovy and hip moves. TOPAZ & TURQUOISE GROUPS In these classes, students start to develop their technique, coordination and choreography skills whilst still learning in a fun and competitive free environment. Similar to our Twinkle Toes classes, themes are used to encourage imagination and creativity whilst also allowing for continual and consistent improvement. JAZZ: Modern and upbeat, this class is full of fun and laughs and is a great way to stay active while also making new friends. In this age level, students learn the basic fundamentals of Jazz and start to develop their own creative and independent thinking. HIP HOP: These classes focus on introducing students to modern and urban style dance technique, whilst also focusing on accented movement, isolations and cool tricks. These classes run to trendy and hip music whilst still being fun and age appropriate. BALLET: Ballet forms the basis of all dance technique and has a large focus on body placement, posture and performance quality. Although classes are run in a fun and nurturing environment and students do not sit for exams, the classes are still taught from a set syllabus allowing students to learn the correct technique and terminology. TAP: This style is all about sounds and rhythm and as such a large focus is placed on timing and musicality, helping to develop their ear for music. At this level the basic fundamentals of tap are taught incorporating a well-rounded warm-up, barre work and combinations to develop the whole dancer. CHEERLEADING/TUMBLING: This class focuses on introducing students to basic tumbling and stunt work, whilst also incorporating pom poms, tricks and floor work. SAPPHIRE, EMERALD, RUBY & DIAMOND GROUPS Building from the Topaz & Turquoise levels, these classes start to introduce more advanced movement and dance technique, while still running in the same fun and nurturing environment as its previous levels. Classes remain themed, however the program allows students to extend themselves and gain greater knowledge in the art of dance, whilst encouraging creative and independent thinking. JAZZ: Modern and upbeat, this class is full of fun and laughs and is a great way to stay active while also making new friends. In this age level, students learn more advanced combinations in Jazz and start to develop their own creative and independent thinking. BALLET: Ballet forms the basis of all dance techniques and has a large focus on body placement, posture and performance quality. Although classes are run in a fun and nurturing environment and students do not sit for exams, the classes are still taught from a set syllabus allowing students to learn the correct technique and terminology. HIP HOP: These classes focus on introducing students to modern and urban style dance technique, whilst also focusing on accented movement, isolations and cool tricks. These classes run to trendy and hip music while still being fun and age appropriate. TAP: This style is all about sounds and rhythm and as such a large focus is placed on timing and musicality, helping to develop their ear for music. At this level, more complex steps are 9

taught incorporating a well-rounded warm-up, barre work and combinations to develop the whole dancer. CONTEMPORARY: This style explores the abstract art of dance, drawing from numerous genres, whilst focusing largely on expression and story telling. This class incorporates strength, stretching, improvisation and floor work as well as breathing techniques. At Jigsaw Dance, we are excited to be teaching SYTYCD choreographer Jason Winter s Contemporary Technique Syllabus. GENERAL INFORMATION NEW STUDENT FREE TRIAL WEEK We recognise that sometimes children need to try out a few classes before they commit to see which one they like best. We offer all of our new families a FREE ONE WEEK TRIAL, so that you can decide which class it is that you like best and we can determine which age group is right for your child. We invite you to give us a quick call or email so that we can talk you through the process and answer any questions that you may have, so that we can get you and your child to our classes feeling confident and happy. CLASS ATTENDANCE If you miss three classes in a row without contacting us, we will assume you have discontinued. If you need to miss three lessons due to things like holiday or ill health, please let us know and we will be happy to hold your place in the class. You can email, call or SMS 0468 99 44 88 if your child is unable to attend their class. CAR PARK SAFETY & PARKING We have students of all ages attending our studio. Please enter and exit the street parking with extreme caution. To ensure the efficient running of Jigsaw Dance and to ensure the safety of our children, please make sure you are there to pick up your child at the end of their lesson and safely escort them back to your car. Although we try our very best to watch the children after class has finished, we cannot be held responsible BEFORE and AFTER class, as we have other classes we have to teach. PRIVATE LESSONS We have some private lesson slots available this year, however it is dependent on our timetable schedule and the availability of the hall. Please email dance@danceclassehornsby.com.au if this is something you are interested in. PHOTOGRAPHY AND PROMOTION Throughout the year, your child may be photographed and/or filmed by teachers and staff for advertising and promotional purposes. This can include, but is not limited to, photos/videos on the Jigsaw Dance Facebook page, website, social media networks and newspaper articles. You must notify staff in writing at the time of enrollment if you do not wish for your child to be photographed or filmed. IMPORTANT SAFETY RULES Once you have enrolled at Jigsaw Dance, all students and their families are expected to adhere to a few simple rules for the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved in the studio. 1. No food containing nuts or nut product can be brought into the studio by a parent, student or sibling. 2. Children must not enter the dance studio area unless accompanied by a teacher 3. Children must not leave the building unless accompanied by a parent or guardian 4. Before and after class, students are expected to be supervised by their parents. Teacher supervision only extends to students in class. 10

Can mum & dad watch the class? FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS First time parents of the younger groups may watch the beginning of the first class to help settle dancers in. After this, we find that children respond much better without parents & siblings in the studio as it becomes distracting & unsettling for the dancers. However, after many years of experience, special tactics are used for those who have trouble separating from their parents, so don t worry if it takes your dancer a couple of weeks to feel comfortable and participate. You will be able to see your dancer s progress and improvement in both our Midyear & End of Year Performances, as well as our parent watching weeks in the final week of Term 1 & 3. For our Twinkle Toes classes you will be invited in for the final week of Term 1 & 3 for a Parent Participation Week. In this week, your dancer will personally teach you what they have been learning, so be ready to kick off your shoes and join in the fun! Is it compulsory to participate in the Midyear & End of Year Showcases? Our concerts are not compulsory, but they are highly recommended. It gives the children a great opportunity to just get up on the stage and build their confidence. It s a fun and entertaining experience for everyone involved and is a great way for your dancers to show off all their hard work throughout the year. Our concerts are designed to be as relaxed and stress free as possible and is a really positive experience for your child. Our Midyear Showcase is usually held at the end of June and our End of Year Spectacular at the end of November, so the dancing year finishes before the massive Christmas rush. Can I enroll after the dancing year has started? Yes! Of course you can! We accept new students throughout the year. Just email us at: dance@danceclasseshornsby.com.au to find out more information and to get your dancer started! Does Jigsaw Dance break for school and public holidays? Yes we dance within the NSW school term so we break for holidays and public holidays. Sometimes our starting week for the year is slightly different to school and our ending week for the year is different so that we avoid the Christmas rush! Do I need to buy a dance uniform or shoes before I enroll? No Dancers trying classes for the first time are welcome to wear anything that they feel comfortable in and can wear sneakers until they are sure they are going to continue with dancing. After this, we have uniform available at the studio and you will have the opportunity to be fitted for your size on your trial day. Shoes can be purchased from Bloch at Hornsby Westfield. We hope you have a fabulous experience at Jigsaw Dance and we can t wait to welcome you as a part of our family. If you have any other questions or want to get started with your free trial, please don t hesitate to contact us via email or phone. We look forward to meeting you very soon! Tash Schuddeboom 11
